Sanchez homers in 9th, helps rally Yankees past Orioles 10-7
May 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning to cap a New York rally fueled by Baltimore gaffes, and the Yankees pulled out a 10-7 victory Monday night.

Gleyber Torres homered twice for the Yankees, who trailed 6-1 after four innings and 7-3 after six.

At that point, the Orioles fulfilled their stature as the team with the worst record in the AL. They threw to the wrong base, missed popups and were outscored 7-0 over the final three innings.

New York scored in the seventh on an overthrow by left fielder Dwight Smith Jr., who fell for a fake tag-up on third base. In the ninth, right fielder Joey Rickard threw to the wrong base on a single, Smith heaved the ball past the plate on Aaron Hicks' tying sacrifice fly, catcher Pedro Severino misjudged a foul pop that preceded a two-out walk to Luke Voit and Sanchez connected off Mychal Givens (0-1).

Zach Britton (2-0) worked the eighth and Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 12th save.

Hanser Alberto and Renato Nunez homered for the Orioles.

Yankees starter J.A. Happ allowed six runs and a pair of solo homers in 3 2/3 innings, but New York's comeback got him a no-decision.

ASTROS 3, WHITE SOX 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Jake Marisnick and Tyler White homered and Brad Peacock struck out nine in his third straight win to lead Houston over Chicago.

Playing without George Springer, who leads the American League with 17 homers, the Astros got pop from the bottom of the lineup to give them at least one homer in 17 straight games. They've won 11 of 12 overall and eight in a row against the White Sox.

Peacock (5-2) allowed two hits in five innings. Ryan Pressly pitched a scoreless eighth to extend his MLB-record streak of appearances without allowing a run to 40, and Roberto Osuna gave up a hit in the ninth, preserving the shutout and earning his 12th save.

The White Sox used five pitchers on a bullpen day which began with Ryan Burr (1-1). He allowed one hit and one run - which was unearned, in two innings.

METS 5, NATIONALS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Amed Rosario and Pete Alonso homered in the first inning as New York, after learning embattled manager Mickey Callaway is staying around, broke out of its offensive funk a bit to beat Washington.

Carlos Gomez cracked an RBI double off the wall for his first Mets hit in 12 years, and slumping Todd Frazier had a run-scoring single to help New York (21-25) stop a five-game losing streak. After the Mets built a 4-0 lead in the third, fill-in starter Wilmer Font and five relievers held off the rival Nationals.

Anthony Rendon homered and Yan Gomes had three hits for Washington, including an RBI single.

Patrick Corbin (4-2) was tagged for four runs and six hits over five innings.

Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith delivered a two-out RBI single in the eighth on the first pitch from left-hander Tony Sipp, who came off the injured list earlier in the day.

Font, starting in place of injured Jason Vargas, lasted four innings before Drew Gagnon (2-0) tossed two hitless innings. Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.

PHILLIES 5, CUBS 4, 10 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - J.T. Realmuto hit a solo homer in the 10th, Jake Arrieta allowed one run over six innings in his return to Wrigley Field and Philadelphia beat Chicago.

Realmuto connected with two outs against Kyle Ryan (0-1), driving a 1-2 fastball a few rows into the left-field seats to decide the opener of a four-game series between the NL East and Central leaders.

Hector Neris (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth. Adam Morgan struck out Jason Heyward leading off the 10th, and Juan Nicasio gave up a single to Albert Almora Jr. before Daniel Descalso grounded into a double play, giving Nicasio his first save since last June 28.

Yu Darvish gave up three runs, four hits and three walks in innings while striking out seven. Anthony Rizzo had three hits, including an RBI single.

BRAVES 4, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Soroka carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, Ronald Acuna Jr. homered twice and Atlanta topped San Francisco.

Austin Riley also homered for the Braves, who won the opener of a seven-game trip and have won eight of 11.

Soroka (5-1) struck out seven and allowed one run and two hits in eight innings. The 21-year-old Braves rookie retired the first 15 batters before Brandon Crawford led off the sixth inning with a homer to straightaway center field.

Atlanta second baseman Ozzie Albies helped preserve Soroka's gem, making a running catch with his back to the infield on a fly ball to short center field by Kevin Pillar that ended the fifth inning.

Sean Newcomb retired three batters for his first major league save.

Acuna homered leading off the game against San Francisco starter Andrew Suarez (0-1). It's the 10th leadoff home run of Acuna's career and second in as many games this season.

ATHLETICS 6, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Brett Anderson left in the sixth inning with a cervical strain, and Oakland hung on to beat Cleveland.

Anderson (5-3) allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old left-hander was injured in the fifth inning when he ducked to avoid a ball hit up the middle by Roberto Perez. Both pieces of Perez's broken bat also sailed close to the pitcher.

Anderson finished the inning, then was removed in the sixth with a 3-1 lead and a runner on second.

Jurickson Profar, Matt Olson and Matt Chapman homered as Oakland extended its winning streak to four, matching its season high.

Jose Ramirez hit an RBI single in the eighth off Lou Trivino that pulled Cleveland to 4-3, and Blake Treinen retired Carlos Gonzalez on an inning-ending groundout with the bases loaded. Treinen picked up his eighth save in 10 chances.

Carlos Carrasco (4-4) allowed three runs, seven hits and two walks, throwing 100 pitches in five innings.

PADRES 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Franmil Reyes hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lift rookie Chris Paddack and San Diego past Arizona.

The Padres snapped a three-game losing streak that had dropped them one game below .500 for the first time this season.

Luke Weaver (3-3) had outdueled Paddack (4-2) and got the first two outs in the sixth before allowing Greg Garcia's two-out single to right and Reyes' homer to center, his 15th.

Paddack allowed one run and five hits in six innings, struck out seven and walked one. Weaver allowed two runs and four hits in six innings and also had seven strikeouts and no walks.

Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his 18th save.

RED SOX 12, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - David Price did not allow any earned runs over five innings in his return from the injured list, and Boston hit four home runs in a rout of Toronto.

Price (2-2), who had not pitched since May 2 because of left elbow tendinitis, allowed three hits, struck out four and walked none, throwing 67 pitches.

Toronto scored twice in the second to tie the game, including Luke Maile's second homer this year. Price then retired his final 10 batters.

Chavis, Jackie Bradley Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers homered for the Red Sox.

Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree, Ryan Brasier and Hector Velazquez combined for hitless relief.

RANGERS 10, MARINERS 9

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Asdrubal Cabrera hit two of the five Texas homers and Mike Minor struck out 11 over six innings in a win over Seattle.

Hunter Pence, Joey Gallo and Rougned Odor also homered. The Rangers twice had back-to-back homers while winning for the fifth time in six games since losing five in a row.

Minor (5-3) had pitched 29 innings in a row at home without giving up a run before Seattle, down 7-0 at the time, scored twice in the sixth.

Tim Beckham had five RBIs for the Mariners, including his first career grand slam in the eighth to chase Shelby Miller. Seattle added three runs in the ninth, including Daniel Vogelbach's two-run homer with two outs.

Texas went ahead to stay with a five-run first inning off Mike Leake (3-5).

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) There was some grumbling in Toronto Monday when last week?s AL Player of the Week, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, was given a day off for the Blue Jays? Victoria Day game with Boston, a game the Red Sox won easily, 12-2.

Why give a 20-year old kid a day off when he is hot? When you have a big crowd in the house on a holiday? When you can use him at DH and at least let him get four AB?s in front of the home crowd, which is rooting for a lousy Toronto team this season?

12) Strange stat: Boston?s Andrew Benintendi is 2-for-35 in his first at-bat of a game; he is hitting .326 in all his other AB?s.

11) The softball coach at Oklahoma, who has won four national titles, makes $1M a year. We were guessing Sunday night how much softball coaches get paid, so I did a google search and was stunned to find that out.

10) Washington Redskins? LB Reuben Foster was carted off the field Monday with a knee injury during the Redskins? OTAs.

9) Tampa Bay Bucs released DT Gerald McCoy, who was set to make $13M this season.

8) Mets? OF Yoenis Cespedes suffered multiple fractures in his right ankle on his ranch down in Florida, so who knows when he?ll be back in the major leagues. Unlike Gerald McCoy, Cespedes will keep getting paid, because baseball contracts are guaranteed- most NFL contracts aren?t.

7) Conference USA reached a broadcast deal with NFL Network, which will show 10 of their games next season.

6) ESPN?s Hubie Brown said over the weekend that he has worked with 21 different TV play-by-play broadcasters during his career, including Al Michaels, Brent Musburger, Marv Albert, Dick Stockton and Mike Breen. He is 85 years old and still going strong. Amazing guy.

5) Toronto?s Ryan Feierabend returned to the majors Saturday as a knuckleballer; he is the first lefty knuckleballer in the major leagues since Baltimore?s Danny Boone, in 1990.

4) All the passengers on a flight at JFK Airport in NYC had to deplane before takeoff Monday afternoon due to a guy who refused to turn his phone off after they closed the boarding door. Police removed him, but only after everyone else was off the plane first.

3) Former Florida State QB Deondre Francois will walk on at Florida Atlantic this fall; hr got tossed from FSU because of a couple of domestic violence incidents. He will compete for the QB job with LY?s starter Chris Robison, who was suspended this spring due to an investigation into an alleged sexual battery that led to no charges being filed.

Francois played in 25 games at quarterback for the Seminoles, throwing for 6,291 yards, 36 TDs and 21 INTs.

2) Vegas Dave, the huckster/tipster featured on Showtime?s Action series last month, had been indicted in January by the Federal Government on 19 felony counts carrying a potential sentence of 40+ years in federal prison, but in the end winds up with no felony convictions.

A judge ordered that he must stay out of Las Vegas sportsbooks for three years; he also gets three years probation, must get gambling treatment and do 150 hours of community service.

1) Am guessing there is no way to know this, but I?d be curious how many fantasy baseball leagues there are in this country. Every time Mike Trout or Bryce Harper hits one out, how many owners are they helping out?

Am also guessing that being an official scorer for major league games has become a much tougher job, with people having money on the line, as far as what is a hit and what isn?t.

LEADING OFF: Germán vs Orioles, Kershaw at Rays
May 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

LOOKING FOR SIX

Yankees right-hander Domingo German (8-1, 2.50 ERA) seeks to win his sixth consecutive start on Tuesday night against the last-place Orioles.

The major league leader in victories, German has a chance to join Tommy John (1979), Herb Pennock (1926) and Jack Chesbro (1904) as the only Yankees to notch nine wins by the end of May.

It's pretty heady stuff for a 26-year-old who entered the season with a 2-7 career record.

Baltimore will counter with rookie Davis Hess (1-5, 5.58), who has gone seven straight starts without a victory, including two losses to New York during that span.

STREAKING

Houston ace Justin Verlander (7-1, 2.38 ERA) will look for his fourth straight win and the seventh in eight starts when he faces the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in the second game of a four-game series. Verlander has dominated in his last two outings against Texas and Detroit, allowing one run and three hits while striking out 17 in 14 innings. Opponents have hit just .116 against him in three starts this month, and he has struck out 24 to raise his season total to 77, fifth in the majors.

RARE MATCHUP

Clayton Kershaw (3-0) will make his second career start against Tampa Bay. While he has a 3.40 ERA, he has a 0.96 WHIP and has limited batters to a .217 batting average. He beat the Rays 8-2 at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 11, 2013, allowing two runs - one earned - and three hits in eight innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.

GREINKE VS. PADRES

Arizona's Zack Greinke (6-1, 2.78) needs three strikeouts for 2,500 when he faces San Diego on Tuesday night. When he started at San Diego on April 2, he struck out 10 and hit two home runs in an 8-5 win. He is 13-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 156 strikeouts against 31 walks in 24 starts against the Padres.

LONG YEAR ALREADY

Los Angeles Angels' pitcher Trevor Cahill has allowed 14 home runs in 44 innings going into Tuesday night's start against Minnesota.

The right-hander - who is tied for the MLB lead in homers surrendered - allowed eight in 110 innings last season. He has four games where he has allowed two or more long balls and has gone seven straight starts with allowing a homer.

Cahill faced the Twins last Wednesday and surrendered six runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Q Is For Quality

The Chicago Cubs roll out LHP Jose Quintana for Tuesday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies and RHP Zach Eflin. The Phils opened the series with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings at Wrigley Field on Monday, as J.T. Realmuto delivered an extra-innings homer to help the Phils to the extra-innings win. In addition, the late rally in the ninth and the run in the 10th helped the 'over' (8.5) connect.

The Phillies enter on a four-game heater, and they're 5-1 across the past six games on the road, too. In addition, they're 4-1 in the past five on the road against a winning team. However, Philadelphia has also managed just two victories across the past eight outings against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going just 2-19 in Eflin's past 11 on the road. They're also 1-5 in Eflin's past six assignments against teams with a winning overall record. Also, Philadelphia has managed just three victories across the past 11 visits to Wrigley Field, while the over is 6-2 across the past eight in Chicago.

The Cubs are still 15-6 across the past 21 gams despite their series-opening setback, and they're 11-4 over the past 15 games at Wrigley Field. Chicago is also an impressive 19-7 over the past 26 games against right-handed starting pitchers, while going 39-18 in the past 57 at the friendly confines vs. RHP. They're also 20-7 across Quintana's past 27 home outings, and 5-2 in his past seven at home against teams with a winning overall record. They're also 8-3 in the past 11 oiutings against NL East foes.

As far as the total, the under is 8-2-1 in Philly's past 11 road games, and 8-2-1 in their past 11 on the road vs. LHP, too. The under is also 21-9-1 in the past 21 overall for Philly, and 4-1-1 over Eflin's past six outings overall. The under is also 5-1 across the past six home games for the Cubbies, while going 16-5 in the past 21 home outings against teams with a winning road record. The over has cashed in six of the previous eight meetings in Chicago.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, May 21

The Rockies and Pirates will kick off a new series in the Steel City. Colorado will be looking to turn things around after a four-game nosedive. They're also 0-4 in the past four on the road, and 0-4 in the past four against teams with a winning overall record, too. They turn to RHP German Marquez to pull them out of their skid, and Colorado is 5-2 across his past seven outings. The Pirates have won seven of their past 10 games, and tgey're 16-5 in the past 21 at home against teams with a losing road record while going 5-1 in the past six vs. RHP. However, the Bucs are just 3-7 in the past 10 on the road, and 0-4 in RHP Chris Archer's past four starts overall.

The Mariners nearly erased a 10-2 deficit in the final two innings, falling 10-9 in Arlington on Monday night. The left run-line bettors of the Rangers crying themselves to sleep after a terrible beat. LHP Tommy Milone and RHP Lance Lynn will square off on Tuesday. The M's are a dismal 2-12 across the past 14 road games, while going 7-19 in the past 26 games overall. They're also just 2-7 across the past nine road games vs. RHP. The Rangers have won five of the past six voerall, and they're 5-1 in the past six at home and 4-1 in the past five at home vs. LHP, too. They're also 5-2 in the past seven starts by Lynn, as well.

Weather Report
The Phillies and Cubs will be battling a stiff wind from 18-21 mph blowing in from the right-field bleachers into the face of the batters. The Nationals and Mets will also be dealing with strong winds gusting from 12-15 mph from the left-center field power alley into the home-plate area.

In Arlington, the Mariners and Rangers will be battling stiff winds from 11-14 mph blowing right to left, knocking down balls off the bats of left-handed hitters. For the Interstate 70 interleague series, the Royals and Cardinals will be playing a game of beat the clock. Winds will be gusting right to left anywhere from 17-22 mph, but the big story is the rain moving in by 9pm CDT.

The Braves and Giants will also be dealing with a stiff wind from 18-21 mph, blowing out to the right-center field power alley. Winds will also affect the Twins and Angels, blowing out 12-15 mph to right field. The Diamondbacks and Padres will be facing winds of 15-18 mph blowing in from left-center field to home.

Wednesday, May 22

The Reds and Brewers conclude their NL Central set on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park. The Reds are 5-1 in their past six against right-handed starting pitchers, and 6-2 in the past eight starts by Castillo against teams with a winning overall mark. For the Brwers, they're 4-1 in the past five outings by RHP Zach Davies, and 18-6 across the past 24 outings at home against teams with a losing overall mark. They're also 7-3 in his past 10 outings overall.

In Queens it's a tremendous pitching matchup with RHPs Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom squaring off. Oddly enough, the Nats are just 1-6 over Scherzer's past seven outings, while going 2-7 in the past nine road games overall for Washington. The Nats are struggling, but they're still 39-16 in Scherzer's past 55 inside the division, so perhaps he'll pull them out of their slide. New York enters this one just 1-10 across the past 11 during Game 3 of a series. They're also struggling with their ace on the hill, cashing in just seven of deGrom's past 25 starts, mostly due to a lack of offensive support. They're also 1-6 over his past seven starts overall.

The Braves and Giants do battle, and Atlanta looks to improve on their 6-2 mark over the past eight road games vs. RHP. They're also 5-1 in the past six starts by LHP Max Fried while working on four days of rest. San Francisco enters just 1-8 over RHP Jeff Samardzija's past nine outings against NL East clubs, and 7-16 in his past 23 overall. The Giants have also cashed in just 11 of Samardzija's past 40 starts overall against winning clubs.

Weather Report
In the matinee affair between the A's and Indians, the winds will be blowing out 12-15 mph to the left-center field power alley. In St. Louis, the Royals and Cardinals will be facing gusting winds 15-18 mph blowing out to left field. The M's and Rangers will face humid and partly cloudy conditions, with winds humming from 15-18 mph from right field to home plate.

For the day action in San Diego, the Diamondbacks and Padres will be facing 16-19 mph winds blowing in from the left-field seats into the first-base dugout. The opposite will be the case at Wrigley Field, gusting 14-17 mph out to the left-center field power alley for the Phillies and Cubbies.

In California, the Twins and Angels will see a 11-14 mph wind blowing out to the right-center field power alley, whle the Braves and Giants see winds howling 11-14 mph out to straightaway center field.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Domingo German, New York Yankees (8-1, 2.50 ERA, $544):
German has been a pleasant surprise for a Yankees team that has been riddled with injuries. The right-hander has been great all season and it?s been more of the same in his last three starts where he owns a 2.41 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He and the Yankees are currently -250 road favorites for today?s game against the Orioles.

SLUMPING

Chris Archer, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-3, 5.58 ERA, $-460):
Umm, it really appears the Rays fleeced the Pirates in the Archer trade last summer. Archer is really struggling in his first full year in Pittsburgh and it?s been particularly ugly more recently. Archer has been rocked to the tune of a 10.66 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP while opponents are getting on base at almost a .400 clip over his last three starts. He and the Pirates are slight +102 home dogs today against the Rockies.

3 STRIKES

QUICK LINE MOVE

The San Francisco Giants opened as high as +115 underdogs at home against the Atlanta Braves, but that line has already shifted to -105. Atlanta starter Julio Teheran has pitched extremely well recently, allowing just one run over 17 innings in his previous three starts.

The Braves are 4-0 in their last four games on the road and 7-2 in Teheran's previous starts. The Giants are 4-9 in their last 13 games at home and 0-4 in their previous four games at home against the Braves.

RACKING UP ROAD WINS

The Twins continue to be one of the best road bets in the majors, having gone 7-1 in their last eight games away from Minnesota. The Twins are +100 underdogs for tonight's game against the Angels in L.A.

Minny will have Michael Pineda and his 5.55 ERA on the mound, but the Angels will start Trevor Cahill who has an even higher ERA at 6.95 and is coming off a loss against the Twins where he gave up six earned runs in just over four innings.

That line for the Twins on the road might be too good to ignore.

BACK THE BREWERS

Speaking of lines that are too good to ignore, the Brewers are -135 at home against the Reds and all signs are pointing towards backing the Brew Crew. Cincinnati is starting Sonny Gray (4.30 ERA) who is still looking for his first win of the season. Milwaukee will have Gio Gonzalez (2-0, 1.69 ERA in four starts) toeing the rubber.

Milwaukee has a BA of .260 and scores 5.25 runs per game at home, while Cincinnati bats a league-worst .205 and scores just 3.46 runs per game on the road.

The Reds are 17-40 in their last 57 away games, while the Brewers are 35-16 in their previous 51 games at home and 11-5 in their last 16 games overall. Milwaukee is also 9-2 in Gonzalez's last 11 starts and 16-5 in the previous 21 games in the head-to-head against Cincy.
