Clayton Kershaw gets 8 Ks, Dodgers beat Tampa Bay 7-3
May 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Clayton Kershaw took a shutout into the seventh inning in his first start at Tropicana Field and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 on Tuesday night.

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner (4-0) wound up allowing two runs, six hits, one walk and had eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers, with the National League's best record at 32-17, have won six of seven. Tampa Bay dropped two games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

Justin Turner, Austin Barnes, Kiki Hernandez, Corey Seager and pinch-hitter Joc Pederson had run-scoring singles for the Dodgers.

Kershaw had scattered four hits through six but was replaced by Pedro Baez with two on and one out in the seventh and Los Angeles up 6-0.

The Rays then got within 6-3 on a run-scoring single by Austin Meadows and Tommy Pham's RBI double off Scott Alexander.

Los Angeles has won 15 consecutive regular season games starter by Kershaw.

ASTROS 5, WHITE SOX 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out a season-high 12 to lead Houston over Chicago.

Verlander (8-1) allowed one hit and walked one in eight innings for his fourth straight win and the seventh in eight starts. The only hit off him came when Jose Abreu sent the first pitch of his at-bat just over the wall and out of reach of a leaping Jake Marisnick in straightaway center field with one out in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-1.

Yuli Gurriel hit a solo homer off Dylan Covey (0-3) in the fourth inning to give the Astros home runs in 18 straight games, tying the second-longest streak in franchise history.

Houston, a big league-best 33-16, won for the 12th time in 13 games overall and ninth in a row over the White Sox.

Covey allowed four hits, walked four and allowed four runs in four-plus innings.

YANKEES 11, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Clint Frazier homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, Gary Sanchez contributed a three-run drive and New York routed Baltimore.

New York made it easy for Domingo German (9-1) to win his sixth consecutive start and increase his major league-leading victory total. The right-hander pitched only five innings and left with a 9-3 lead.

David Hale worked the four innings to earn his first save since 2010 at Class A.

DJ LeMahieu had three hits and Sanchez finished with four RBIs for the AL East leaders, who have won seven of eight.

Sanchez got it started, hitting his second three-run homer in as many nights before David Hess (1-6) got an out.

Stevie Wilkerson hit a three-run homer for the Orioles, who have lost 10 and 12 and dropped to an AL-worst 15-33.

BLUE JAYS 10, RED SOX 3

TORONTO (AP) - Rowdy Tellez had two homers and five RBIs and Randal Grichuk also homered in Toronto's win over Boston.

Toronto won for just the fifth time against Boston at Rogers Centre since the start of the 2017 season.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returned to the Toronto lineup, going 2 for 5 with a pair of runs. Brandon Drury was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. The 10 runs tied a season high.

Mitch Moreland, Rafael Devers and Jackie Bradley Jr. all had solo shots for the Red Sox.

Marcus Stroman (2-6) lasted six innings, giving up one run, five hits and a season-high six walks.

Boston's loss ended its seven-game winning streak in starts by Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3).

MARLINS 5, TIGERS 4, 11 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Chad Wallach hit a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning, and Miami beat Detroit.

Detroit forced extra innings by scoring two unearned runs off Miami closer Sergio Romo. The bottom of the ninth included an error, two replay reversals and the ejection of Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire.

That was the only success Detroit had against the Miami bullpen, though. Nick Anderson (1-1) struck out the side in the 10th, then closed the Tigers out in the 11th for his first career win.

Wallach put the Marlins ahead in the 11th with a two-out drive to left-center field off Joe Jimenez (2-2). The Tigers have dropped seven in a row.

JaCoby Jones hit a solo homer for the Tigers in the third, but Harold Ramirez - playing his sixth major league game - answered with his solo home run an inning later.

GIANTS 4, BRAVES 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Joe Panik hit a game-ending two-run single off Atlanta closer Luke Jackson with two outs in the ninth to lift San Francisco.

Brandon Crawford began the comeback with a one-out single. With two out, Kevin Pillar singled in Crawford. Pillar stole second, and moved to third on Pablo Sandoval's pinch-hit infield single. Pinch-runner Mac Williamson stole second before Panik slapped a 3-2 pitch from Jackson into right field to cap the three-run rally.

It's the fourth blown save this season for Jackson (2-1). Atlanta had won four straight against San Francisco and allowed one run in all four.

Trevor Gott (2-0) retired three batters to win.

Josh Donaldson, Nick Markakis, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dansby Swanson had two hits apiece for Atlanta.

Braves starter Julio Teheran struck out six and gave up three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings.

METS 6, NATIONALS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Pete Alonso hit a long tying homer in the eighth inning, Amed Rosario had a winning infield single with two outs in the ninth and New York rallied from deficits three times to beat Washington.

Edwin Diaz (1-2) worked around a ninth-inning single for his first win with the Mets. Washington lost its third straight.

Mets starter Zack Wheeler gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings, while Washington's Erick Fedde allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

John Soto and Brian Dozier homered for Washington.

J.D. Davis's three-run pinch homer for the Mets.

ROCKIES 5, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - German Marquez struck out seven over eight dominant innings and Trevor Story hit his 11th home run as Colorado cooled off surging Pittsburgh.

Marquez (5-2) gave up three hits, walked one and didn't allow a runner to third base as the Rockies snapped a four-game losing streak.

Charlie Blackmon went 3 for 5 for Colorado, including a two-run triple to left off Chris Archer (1-4) in the fourth. Story homered for the second straight game. His shot to deep left field in the third inning glanced off the glove of Pittsburgh leftfielder Bryan Reynolds.

Archer gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings, with two walks and three strikeouts as his ERA ticked down to 5.55. He needed 92 pitches to get 15 outs. Marquez, meanwhile, needed 104 pitches to get through eight full innings.

ATHLETICS 5, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Pinch-hitter Mark Canha's two-run homer off struggling Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer in the third inning sent Oakland to its fifth straight win.

Canha replaced injured slugger Khris Davis and connected off Bauer (4-3).

Bauer walked four, struck out five and hit three while throwing a season-high 123 pitches.

Oakland reliever Liam Hendricks (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Blake Treinen, the A's fourth reliever, worked the ninth for his ninth save in 11 tries.

Jurickson Profar homered in the eighth as Oakland improved to 7-1 against AL Central teams this season. The A's are 59-20 vs. Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit and Kansas City dating to Aug. 23, 2016.

Francisco Lindor and Carlos Santana hit solo homers for Cleveland.

REDS 3, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Sonny Gray and three Cincinnati relievers held down Milwaukee, which was missing Christian Yelich because of back spasms.

It was the major league-leading seventh shutout for the Reds as the Brewers were blanked for the first time this season.

Cincinnati scored all three runs in the first inning. Nick Senzel scored on a wild pitch, Phillip Ervin pushed a run across with a double and scored on a fielder's choice.

Gray (1-4) earned his first win of the season with six shutout innings in his first appearance at Miller Park. Gray tied his season-high with nine strikeouts. Raisel Iglesias earned his 10th save.

Brewers starter Gio Gonzalez (2-1) pitched five innings, allowed three hits and three earned runs, striking out four.

RANGERS 5, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Lance Lynn allowed two runs over seven innings and Shawn Kelley earned the save hours after learning that two lumps removed from his throat last week were benign as Texas beat Seattle.

Lynn (6-3) gave up five singles and one walk and had a season-high 11 strikeouts and one walk in his 200th career start. Kelley, who was activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, allowed a ninth-inning homer to Omar Narvaez, who had three hits, in earning his third save of the season.

The loss continued a tailspin for Seattle, which is 10-26 since a 13-2 start.

Nomar Mazara had three hits, an RBI and scored one of two runs on a sacrifice fly after initially being ruled out at the plate before a successful Texas challenge. Joey Gallo hit a two-run home run, his 15th of the season, in the eighth inning.

The Rangers have won six of their last seven games to reach .500 at 23-23.

Left-hander Tommy Milone (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings in his first major league start of the season.

PADRES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Eric Hosmer's two-run, opposite-field home run off Zack Greinke highlighted the three-run sixth inning that carried San Diego past Arizona.

Greinke (6-2), who recorded his 2,500th career strikeout in the fourth, was working on a one-hit shutout when he ran into trouble in the sixth. Ian Kinsler singled with one out, advanced on Franmil Reyes' groundout and scored on Manny Machado's single. Hosmer then drove Greinke's next pitch to left field to give the Padres the lead. It was Hosmer's seventh.

The Padres won their second straight to pop back above .500. The Diamondbacks lost their fourth straight.

Left-hander Matt Strahm (2-3) allowed two solo homers among his four hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked none.

Kirby Yates struck out the side in the ninth for his 19th save.

CUBS 3, PHILLIES 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Javier Baez's single capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally and Chicago stopped Philadelphia's four-game winning streak.

Kris Bryant had three hits for the Cubs and scored two runs.

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper went 0 for 4, dropping his average to .224, and failed to reach base at Wrigley Field for the first time in 19 games. Jean Segura doubled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

Chicago trailed 2-1 starting the ninth, but Juan Nicasio (0-2) walked Bryant leading off, Anthony Rizzo doubled and, after Willson Contreras hit a shallow flyout, Jason Heyward was intentionally walked.

Bryant scored when Albert Almora Jr. hit a chopper toward first, and Nicasio's underhand toss to catcher J.T. Realmuto was late, a call upheld by a video review. Baez, who didn't start for the second straight game because of a jammed right heel, lined Nicasio's first pitch to right over a drawn-in infield.

Kyle Ryan (1-1) got two outs for the win.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

? It snowed in Denver Tuesday. On May 21st. Good grief.

? DT Ndamukong Suh signed a 1-year deal with the Buccaneers.

? Giants 4, Braves 3? SF scored 3 in 9th; Panik had walk-off single.

? Baseball injuries: Angels put SS Andrelton Simmons (ankle) on IL

? Mariners put 2B Dee Gordon, 3B Ryan Healy on IL.

? Before Tuesday, Washington?s bullpen had 6.46 ERA; next-worst in MLB is Miami?s (5.35)

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Mets have a problem with Robinson Cano, who twice didn?t run out balls last weekend, both of which resulted in double plays. Cano is making $24M a year from now thru 2023; is it too much to ask him to at least pretend that he cares?

I don?t need him sprinting to first on a ball where he has no chance to be safe; Aledmys Diaz of the Astros got hurt doing that Friday. Tampa Bay lost Evan Longoria for 87 games once when he pulled a hamstring sprinting on a ball he had no chance to beat out.

But Cano has to at least go 60-75% to first base; he is an elder statesman of the game, the team is struggling badly, the manager?s job is hanging in the balance. It isn?t a lot to ask.

12) Mets were shut out both Saturday and Sunday in Miami, the first time since 1967 that the Mets had two or fewer hits in consecutive games.

11) According to guys on ESPN.com, a 6-foot-11 Croatian forward named Luka Sumanic made the biggest impression at the NBA Combine this weekend.

10) According to observers, LSU PG Tremont Waters outplayed fellow point guards, Tennessee?s Jordan Bone and St John?s Shamorie Ponds

9) Sunday, the A?s scored two runs in top of the 7th inning to take a 5-3 lead in Detroit, but rain stopped the game and it never resumed. The game will resume September 6, when hopefully it will matter if Oakland can get the last nine outs of the game.

A?s lost the last six Sundays; at least they didn?t lose this game, and it?ll be resumed on a Friday, so that helps.

8) Tampa Bay Rays have two catchers active; Travis d?Arnaud ad Erik Kratz; neither guy was in the Tampa Bay organization two weeks ago.

7) Jerry Glanville is going to the defensive coordinator of the XFL team in Tampa; he was in the CFL working under June Jones LY, but didn?t go to Houston?s XFL team with Jones.

6) Brooks Koepka?s +4 Sunday was the highest final round score by a major champion since Vijay Singh at the 2004 PGA. Thats when it is good to have a 7-stroke lead.

5) Eight golfers have finished 2nd in all four majors: Mickelson, Nicklaus, Norman, Oosthuizen, Palmer, Tom Watson, Craig Wood and now, Dustin Johnson.

You make a boatload of money for finishing 2nd in a major.

4) Training camp in the CFL started last weekend. Football is coming close to being a year-round thing.

3) When Bronx-Red Sox play couple of baseball games in London next month, the games will be played on artificial turf. MLB had use of the stadium for 21 days; they decided there wasn?t enough time to install real grass, so artificial turf it is.

2) Providence basketball coach Ed Cooley turned Michigan down Tuesday, as John Beilein?s old job remains open. Cooley got a contract extension from Providence.

1) No Buffalo Bill has worn #32 since OJ Simpson left the team in 1977, but free agent RB Sinorise Perry was wearing #32 during Buffalo?s OTAs this week.

LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs. deGrom, Hamels faces Phillies
May 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

CURTAIN UP! LIGHT THE LIGHTS!

Max Scherzer, the 2016 and '17 NL Cy Young Award winner, starts for Washington and Jacob deGrom, the 2018 NL Cy Young winner, starts for the New York Mets in a rematch of opening-day starters. The Mets won the opener 2-0 as deGrom struck out 10 and walked one in six innings, allowing six hits. Scherzer gave up two runs and two hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking three. Robinson Cano homered in the first and added an RBI single in the eighth against reliever Matt Grace.

YOU'RE A MAN WHO GOES TRAVELING

Cole Hamels (4-0) starts for the Chicago Cubs in his first career start against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that signed him as a first-round pick in the 2002 amateur draft. Hamels was 114-90 for the Phillies from 2006-15, helping Philadelphia win the 2008 World Series and the 2009 NL pennant. He was traded to Texas in July 2015 and to the Cubs last July. Rookie Cole Irvin (2-0) starts for the Phillies.

WE HAVE SO MUCH IN COMMON

Milwaukee's Zach Davies (5-0) takes a 1.54 ERA, second in the major leagues behind the 1.52 for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu, into his start against Cincinnati. Before this year, Davies had won his first decision just once, as a rookie in September 2015. Reds starter Luis Castillo (5-1) is third in the NL with a 1.90 ERA.

I'M ELECTRIFYING

The Dodgers' Cody Bellinger hit 17 homers in the Los Angeles Dodgers' first 48 games, one shy of the team record set by Gil Hodges in 1951 and matched by Raul Mondesi in 1999. Roy Campanella had 17 through 48 games in 1953 and 1955, and Duke Snider also reached that figure in 1955.

Montas pitches Oakland to 6th straight win, 7-2 over Indians
May 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Avisail Garcia and Kevin Kiermaier each hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to power the Tampa Bay Rays past the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 on Wednesday night.

Kiermaier also made a rocket throw from center field to cut down Cody Bellinger at home plate, keeping the score tied 1-all in the sixth. Bellinger, who was aboard on a fielder's choice, failed to reach base safely for the first time in 46 starts this season. He went 0 for 4, dropping his major league-leading batting average to .394.

Tommy Pham hit his sixth homer for the Rays, and Brandon Lowe singled in the go-ahead run to spark a seven-run seventh. Emilio Pagan (1-0) got four outs in relief.

Garcia's eighth homer came off Dylan Floro, who entered with a 0.44 ERA - best among NL relievers. Floro (1-1) pitched to four batters and got none of them out.

Kiermaier capped the big inning with his fourth home run off left-hander Caleb Ferguson.

Max Muncy tied it with a homer in the sixth off Rays reliever Yonny Chirinos.

Tampa Bay opener Ryne Stanek pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.

ATHLETICS 7, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Frankie Montas pitched six scoreless innings, Mark Canha homered and drove in three runs and Oakland extended its winning streak to six games with a win over Cleveland.

Nick Hundley had three hits, including a solo homer and two RBIs. Robbie Grossman also drove in a pair of runs as Oakland swept the three-game series and reached the .500 mark for the first time since April 26.

The Athletics completed a 6-2 trip and have won 10 of their last 14.

Montas (6-2) struck out nine and gave up five hits, four of them over the first two innings, in lowering his ERA to 2.40.

Canha, filling in for injured designated hitter Khris Davis, hit his seventh home run and a double.

Jefry Rodriguez (1-4) allowed four earned runs in four innings. Cleveland trailed 7-0 in the eighth when Jake Bauers hit a two-run homer off Fernando Rodney.

YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gleyber Torres hit two of New York's five home runs off Baltimore's beleaguered pitching staff, and survived a shaky outing from CC Sabathia.

Torres homered leading off the third and fifth innings to help New York take a 7-2 lead. Gary Sanchez hit his ninth homer against the Orioles this season, and DJ LeMahieu and Thairo Estrada also connected.

Baltimore has lost five in a row to sink to 15-34, the worst record in the majors.

Sabathia (3-1) allowed five runs and six hits, including two home runs, in five innings.

Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

Richie Martin hit his first big league homer and Renato Nunez added a two-run shot for Baltimore.

ROYALS 8, CARDINALS 2, 1ST GAME

CARDINALS 10, ROYALS 3, 2ND GAME

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna and Matt Carpenter went deep as part of a four-homer barrage and St. Louis split a doubleheader with Kansas City.

Brad Keller threw seven-plus innings of two-hit ball to snap a six-start winless streak and Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer as Royals won the opener.

Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong also homered as St. Louis had as many home runs in the second game as it did hits in the opener.

Adam Wainwright (4-4) battled through control issues with 55 of his 103 pitches going for strikes. In five innings, he allowed three runs, six hits, walked four and struck out two.

John Gant, Andrew Miller, Carlos Martinez and John Brebbia combined for four scoreless innings of relief.

Homer Bailey (4-5) threw 66 pitches, but lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs.

In the opener, Keller (3-5) snapped a six-start winless streak.

Soler's drive into the left field seats off Michael Wacha (3-2) capped a six-run third and made it 7-0.

Whit Merrifield had two hits, drove in a run and scored once. Nicky Lopez reached three times and scored twice and Hunter Dozier hit a pair of sacrifice flies.

CUBS 8, PHILLIES 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Cole Hamels struggled in his first start against his original team, Albert Almora Jr. hit his first career grand-slam and Chicago rallied from an early three-run deficit with three homers in beating Philadelphia.

Almora broke a 3-all tie by launching Cole Irvin's changeup into the shrubs in the center-field batter's eye.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 12th homer, a mammoth shot in the third that struck the neon beer sign atop the right field scoreboard, tying the game at 3-all. Hamels escaped with a no-decision despite allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks through four innings. Javier Baez added a solo shot in the seventh.

Tyler Chatwood (3-0) earned the win with four innings of one-run, three-hit relief.

Andrew McCutchen had three hits, including a solo homer. Jean Segura extended his hitting streak to 13 games as the Phillies dropped their second straight.

Irvin (2-1) was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits.

BREWERS 11, REDS 9

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yasmani Grandal homered during a big rally and started a bizarre double play on a pitch that got past him and bounced to the backstop, helping Milwaukee outlast Cincinnati.

Grandal hit a two-run homer as the Brewers scored five times in the sixth for an 11-8 lead.

The pitching matchup between the Brewers' Zach Davies and Luis Castillo turned out to be the shortest outing of the season for both. Davies gave up six runs in three innings and Castillo allowed four in 2.

Josh Hader finished it, earning his 12th save in 12 chances.

Tyler Barnhart's fourth homer capped a five-run second that put the Reds up, 5-0. Dietrich hit his 12th in the third for a 6-1 lead.

The Brewers made it 6-all in the fourth on a two-run single by Eric Thames. Keston Hiura and Mike Moustakas also homered for Milwaukee.

Milwaukee reliever Junior Guerra (2-0) earned the win. Wandy Peralta (0-1) took the loss.

RANGERS 2, MARINERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Hunter Pence homered, Adrian Sampson had another impressive long outing for a victory after not starting, and Texas beat slumping Seattle to complete a three-game sweep.

The Mariners have lost 27 of 37 games to fall to the bottom of the AL West standings since starting the season 13-2.

Seattle lefty Marco Gonzalez (5-4) limited the Rangers to one earned run over seven innings, but dropped to 0-4 with a 4.56 ERA in five starts in May. He was 5-0 after his first seven starts this season.

Sampson (2-3) went 5 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run after the Rangers used a reliever to start the game. Jesse Chavez got the first five outs against the Mariners. Shawn Kelley worked the ninth for his fourth save in five chances.

PADRES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Left-hander Eric Lauer pitched seven strong innings for his first win in seven starts and Greg Garcia had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run as San Diego beat Arizona to complete a three-game sweep.

Lauer (3-4) held the Diamondbacks to one run and four hits, struck out seven and walked none to win for the first time since April 8 at San Francisco. Kirby Yates got the final three outs for his major league-leading 20th save.

The Padres roughed up rookie Merrill Kelly (4-5) for four runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out none.

MARLINS 6, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Garrett Cooper hit his first major league home run in the sixth inning, leading a comeback as Miami won its fifth straight by beating Detroit.

The Tigers led 3-0 before Cooper's solo shot. The Marlins then scored three runs in the seventh, and Brian Anderson added a two-run homer in the eighth.

Detroit has dropped eight in a row - and Sunday's game was suspended with the Tigers trailing Oakland in the seventh inning.

Detroit starter Daniel Norris was solid before giving way to Buck Farmer (2-3).

Jose Urena (2-6) allowed two earned runs in six innings for the Marlins. Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

Detroit scored a run in each of the first three innings. Niko Goodrum hit an RBI single, Gordon Beckham drove in a run with a groundout, and Christin Stewart added a run-scoring double.

METS 6, NATIONALS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Juan Lagares hit a go-ahead, three-run double off Washington closer Sean Doolittle, Rajai Davis capped the six-run eighth inning with a three-run homer in his first at-bat for the Mets and New York rallied for the victory.

Max Scherzer stranded seven runners in six shutout innings, and Adam Eaton homered on Jacob deGrom's fourth pitch in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners.

Adeiny Hechavarria doubled with one out in the eighth off Kyle Barraclaugh (0-1).

Mets star Robinson Cano was sent for an MRI after straining his left quad running to first base when he grounded out in the third following J.D. Davis' two-out double.

Drew Gagnon (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the Mets. Tyler Bashlor finished the three-hitter.

New York (23-26) won its third straight and stretched its home winning streak to six.

ROCKIES 9, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Bell reached the Allegheny River on the fly for the second time in two weeks, the only notable blemish for Colorado in its win over Pittsburgh.

Daniel Murphy hit a three-run homer to put Colorado ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Bell then sent a changeup from Jon Gray 454 feet over the Clemente Wall in right field, making it 3-1 in the second. It was the fifth home run to splash into the river on the fly since PNC Park opened in 2001.

The only sustained pressure against Gray (4-4) ended after Kevin Newman cut it to 3-2 with a double later in the second. Gray went seven innings, giving up three runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Montana DuRapau (0-1), the Pirates' opener, allowed Murphy's homer and lasted two outs.

Tony Wolters broke the game open with Colorado's second three-run homer with two outs in the third.

RED SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 5, 13 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Rafael Devers homered in his third straight game, Michael Chavis hit a tiebreaking homer in the 13th inning and Boston beat Toronto.

Devers led off the eighth with a blast to left, becoming the sixth player in Red Sox history aged 22 or younger to homer in three straight games. The others are Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Carl Yastrzemski, Rico Petrocelli, and Jim Tabor.

Marcus Walden couldn't hold a 4-3 lead for Boston in the ninth. Brandon Drury hit a one-out double and pinch-hitter Danny Jansen sent the game to extra innings with a two-out single.

Mookie Betts put Boston back on top by connecting off Joe Biagini in the 12th, his eighth, but Rowdy Tellez tied it again with a two-out drive off Heath Hembree in the bottom half.

Chavis restored Boston's lead with a homer off Jimmy Cordero (0-1), making Hembree (1-0) the winner.

Mitch Moreland had two RBIs and Jackie Bradley Jr. scored twice for the Red Sox, who have won three of four.

Toronto rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first home run at Rogers Centre, but that was all the Blue Jays got against Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello, who allowed three hits in six innings.

WHITE SOX 9, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Eloy Jimenez homered twice and Chicago turned the first triple play in the majors this season in a win over Houston.

Charlie Tilson's first career homer was a grand slam in Chicago's six-run sixth inning. The White Sox got going early with Jimenez connecting in the second and Jose Abreu adding a solo shot in the fourth.

The Astros got a homer from Alex Bregman in a three-run fourth to go on top before Chicago's six-run sixth inning.

Gerrit Cole (4-5) yielded seven hits and six runs while striking out seven in five-plus innings.

White Sox starter Ivan Nova (3-4) allowed 10 hits but just three runs in seven-plus innings.

Bregman's homer extended Houston's streak of games with at least one to 19, which ties the longest run in franchise history. The Astros also homered in 19 straight games in 2017.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the NASCAR race in Charlotte Sunday night:

3-1? Kyle Busch

9-2? Kevin Harvick

6-1? Martin Truex

7-1? Brad Keselowski

8-1? Joey Logano, Chase Elliott

14-1? Clint Bowyer

Quote of the Day
?I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the University of Michigan?s storied basketball program. I have been very fortunate to be part of a great championship organization in the Miami Heat for the last nine years ? three as a player and six as a coach. It was always going to take something incredibly special to for me to leave Miami; however, I know in my heart this is the right place and the right time.?
Juwan Howard

Thursday?s quiz
Which former NBA star is the head coach/GM of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA?

Wednesday?s quiz
OJ Simpson finished his NFL career with the 49ers.

Tuesday?s quiz
The Sun Bowl is played in El Paso every December.

*********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Michigan hired Juwan Howard as its new basketball coach; Howard had been as assistant with the Miami Heat and of course is a Michigan alum, playing in the Fab Five era.

12) Giancarlo Stanton looks like an NFL tight end, but good grief, he gets hurt a lot.

First, a biceps strain; rehab from that led to a shoulder issue. Then, in his first rehab game in Florida, he strains a calf muscle trying to avoid a pitch in a Class A game, so now he?s been shut down another 7-10 days. Oy.

Stanton has been on my fantasy team since since he was an 18-year old in the Florida State League, so I?ve been down this road before:
? Missed 39 games in 2012
? Missed 46 games in 2013
? Missed 88 games in 2015
? Missed 43 games in 2016
? Missed 45 games already this season.

Guy gets paid $30M a year; would be nice if he played more.

11) Monday is Stanton Bobblehead Day in the Bronx; that should go over well.

10) Race for the two Wild Cards in the AL:
? Tampa Bay 27-18
? Boston 25-23
? Cleveland 25-23
? Texas 24-23
? Oakland 25-25
? LA Angels 22-26

9) Gleyber Torres has 11 homers this year; nine of them were against Baltimore.

8) Iowa passed a sports betting bill this week; their goal is to begin taking wagers around August 10th.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Cleveland DFA?d OF Carlos Gonzalez.
? Rockies put P Wade Davis (oblique) on IL.
? Angels put C Kevan Smith on 7-day concussion IL.

6) St Louis Blues came into the NHL in the fall of 1967, and made the Stanley Cup finals their first three years in the NHL, going 0-12 in those finals. This will be the first time since then that they?re back in the finals, playing the same Bruins? squad they lost to in 1970.

5) Colonial Country Club is hosting a PGA Tour event this week for the 72nd consecutive year, the second-longest streak behind Augusta National.

4) Vanderbilt hired Faragi Phillips as an assistant basketball coach; he went 105-31 in four years as a head coach at the high school level in Memphis, winning two state titles. Memphis is a very fertile recruiting ground in basketball.

3) Future NFL Draft sites: 2021: Cleveland, 2023: Kansas City. No word on 2022.

NFL Combine is staying in Indianapolis for at least the next couple years.

2) A?s 7, Indians 2? Oakland won its last six games, is back at .500 (25-25).

1) Robinson Cano actually ran out a ground ball last night, so of course he leaves the game right after with a strained quad muscle.

LEADING OFF: Cano exits after grounder, JD Martinez out
May 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

AILING

The Mets will check Robinson Cano, a day after he left the game against Washington because of tightness in his left quadriceps.

Cano appeared to hurt the leg while running to first base when he grounded out in the third inning. The 36-year-old second baseman is batting .241 with three homers and 13 RBIs. The eight-time All-Star was acquired by New York from Seattle in December.

Twice last weekend Cano failed to run out grounders in Miami, both of them resulting in double plays.

MISSING MARTINEZ

Boston star J.D. Martinez wasn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game at Toronto because of a sore back and manager Alex Cora says the slugger is unlikely to play again until Friday.

Cora said he was hesitant to play Martinez in the series finale, citing the artificial surface and the early afternoon start. The Red Sox will certainly miss Martinez's presence in the lineup, but the Blue Jays will not - he has 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 40 career games against them.

Martinez is hitting .308 this season with nine homers and 28 RBIs.

RETURN OF THE ACE

Following a brutal start to the season, Aaron Nola has looked much more like the ace pitcher the Phillies expect him to be. The 25-year-old right-hander finished third in the NL Cy Young voting last season, but had a 7.45 ERA after his first four starts this year.

Nola has found his form over the past month, giving up just one earned run in four of his last five starts and struck out 12 against Colorado in his previous outing. He'll be on the mound for Philadelphia at Wrigley Field facing the Chicago Cubs and lefty Jon Lester.

HOME ISN'T HELPING

The Cleveland Indians are going to have to climb out of a hole if they want to win the AL Central for a fourth straight season. The Indians (25-23) were just swept at home in three games by Oakland and have a 13-16 record since the middle of April. Now they host a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Indians will start right-hander Adam Plutko, who gave up just one run and one hit in six innings during his first start of the season in a win over Baltimore last Saturday.

Thursday's Afternoon Tips
May 22, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Nationals (-145, 7) at Mets ? 12:10 PM EST

The fall from grace for Washington (19-30) is a spectacular one this season as the Nationals are one of two National League teams to win less than 20 games. Washington has been swept only once this season, but the Nats are on the verge of receiving the broom treatment for a second time if they can?t beat the Mets (23-25) in the series finale at Citi Field.

New York knocked off Washington in Monday?s series opener following a disastrous weekend in Miami in which the Mets were swept. The Mets walked-off past the Nationals on Tuesday, 6-5 in a back-and-forth contest, while busting out for six runs in the eighth inning of Wednesday?s 6-1 victory.

Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer went toe-to-toe in a battle of the last two NL Cy Young winners as the Nationals led, 1-0 headed to the bottom of the eighth. Juan Lagares cleared the bases with a three-run double, followed by a three-run homer from newly acquired Rajai Davis to give New York only its third win in 14 Game 3?s of a series in 2019.

It?s Stephen vs. Steven in Thursday?s finale on the mound with Strasburg taking the ball for the Nats and Matz going for the Mets. Strasburg bounced back from a pair of road defeats to the Brewers and Dodgers (in which Washington was shut out each time) to silence the Cubs? bats in a 5-2 victory last Saturday. The Nats? fireballer dominated Chicago by striking out seven batters in eight innings of work for his fourth victory of the season.

Strasburg split a pair of starts against the Mets to open the season as he allowed four earned runs in six innings of an 11-8 home setback on March 30, followed by a 4-0 victory at Citi Field less than a week later by tossing 6.2 scoreless innings. Matz is coming off consecutive road losses at Milwaukee and Miami, but the New York southpaw is unbeaten in three starts at Citi Field this season. In his two starts against Washington, the Mets are 2-0, although he has produced two no-decisions in a pair of games that easily hit the OVER.

Rockies at Pirates (-130, 8 ?) ? 12:35 PM EST

Colorado (22-25) began its six-game trip through the Keystone State by losing all three contests at Philadelphia, including two by one run each. The Rockies have rebounded nicely by capturing the first two games at Pittsburgh as Colorado seeks its first sweep of a three-game set this season.

German Marquez tossed eight innings of scoreless ball in Monday?s 5-0 shutout of the Pirates (24-22), while Jon Gray went seven innings and scattered seven hits in a 9-3 rout. Colorado scored three runs in the first inning, three in the third, and three in the fifth, while all nine Rockies? starters recorded at least one hit. The Rockies? offense continues to perform well of late by scoring five runs or more in six of the past eight games, while cashing the OVER five times in this span.

The Pirates wrapped up their 11-game road trip with three straight wins at San Diego, but the offense has produced a total of three runs in the past 18 innings. Pittsburgh owns a 7-1 record with Jordan Lyles on the mound, including a pair of road underdog victories over the Padres and Cardinals his two outings. Lyles struck out a season-high 12 batters in seven innings of a 5-3 triumph at San Diego last Friday, while the right-hander has compiled a 1.97 ERA on the season.

Antonio Senzatela has put together solid numbers away from Coors Field by owning a 2.95 ERA on the road, compared to a 7.27 ERA at home. The Rockies have not lost back-to-back starts made by Senzatela this season, as Colorado fell at Philadelphia, 2-1 in his last outing. It also marked the first loss by Colorado in the right-hander?s four road starts this season, while the Rockies are 5-1 to the OVER in Senzatela?s last six outings.

Phillies at Cubs (-107) ? 2:20 PM EST

Both these teams have eyes on October baseball as Chicago (28-18) seeks the series victory over Philadelphia (28-20). The Phillies held off the Cubs in extra innings on Monday, 5-4 thanks to the game-tying run scored in the ninth and the go-ahead run scored in the 10th on a J.T. Realmuto solo home run. The Cubs bounced back on Tuesday with a 3-2 walk-off win to snap Philadelphia?s four-game winning streak thanks to Javier Baez?s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Chicago erased a 3-0 deficit in Wednesday?s 8-4 triumph over Philadelphia as the Cubs plated eight unanswered runs from the third through the seventh inning. Former Phillies? standout Cole Hamels didn?t last to the fifth inning as he allowed nine hits and three runs in four innings, but right-hander Tyler Chatwood tossed four solid innings of relief for the win. The Cubs went deep three times, including Anthony Rizzo?s game-tying three-run shot in the third inning.

Jon Lester tries to rebound from his worst start of the season at Washington in which the Cubs? left-hander was tagged for five runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings of a 5-2 setback. The Cubs are 3-1 in Lester?s four starts a Wrigley Field, while he has allowed only one earned run in this stretch. Lester dominated the Phillies last September at Citizens Bank Park by tossing six scoreless innings in an 8-1 rout.

Aaron Nola counters for Philadelphia as the Phillies? ace has rebounded from a tough start to the season. Nola gave up 15 earned runs in his first three outings, but the former LSU standout has given up only 10 earned runs in his past six trips to the mound. Nola struck out a season-high 12 batters in six innings of a 2-1 victory over the Rockies his last time out, while the Phillies are 2-0 in two road starts this season.

Twins, Angels postponed, will be made up on Thursday
May 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Very little has slowed the Minnesota Twins of late. A rare Southern California rain shower did the trick Wednesday night.

The Twins had their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels postponed because of weather and unplayable field conditions. It has been rescheduled for Thursday.

It is only the third postponement at Angel Stadium since 1995 and the 12th since the stadium opened in 1966. The last postponement occurred on July 19, 2015, against Boston.

Minnesota is 31-16 and has a seven-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central, which is the earliest it has been up that much in the division. The previous earliest was June 24, 2002, when they were seven games ahead of the Chicago White Sox.

The Twins - who haven't won a division title since 2010 - have taken five of six on this road trip and are trying to get a sweep in Anaheim for the first time since 1996.

Manager Rocco Baldelli wasn't thrilled with the decision to postpone the game, but he also said he realized as the visiting team that it wasn't his call.

It rained at Angel Stadium two hours before Wednesday's game, causing puddles to form in both left and right field. The grounds crew worked for over an hour to remove water from the outfield, but conditions remained unplayable.

''I think it was one of those circumstances where we play in tough weather a lot and have probably played in circumstances similar,'' Baldelli said. ''It was clear that it was not a clearly unplayable field and it was not a clearly, clearly playable field. There was some sort of gray area where we were sitting.''

Martin Perez (6-1), who had been scheduled to start for Minnesota on Wednesday, will take the mound against Los Angeles' Matt Harvey (2-3).

Minnesota has been a force on the road as it leads the majors in wins (17), batting average (.287) and runs per game (6.60) away from Target Field.

The Twins are batting .313 with 14 home runs and have outscored the Mariners and Angels 51-22 on the current road trip. Minnesota took three of four at Seattle before arriving in Southern California and winning the first two against the Angels.

''We have one of the best offenses in the league and can change the game in one inning,'' designated hitter Marwin Gonzalez said. ''We are on a good roll right now. It's super early but we are winning series. If you play good in short series you are going to win.''

Angels manager Brad Ausmus said there was too much water in the outfield to be able to play.

''As they moved the water around, it seems to disappear. You don't see the puddling but when you stepped on it, it would just come up around your shoe,'' he said. ''I couldn't imagine trying to field a ball coming through that water, picking it up soaking wet and trying to make a throw to a base, never mind what could happen if your cleats didn't catch.''

The Angels have dropped three straight after winning the first two on their homestand.

ROSTER MOVE

The Angels placed C Kevan Smith on the seven-day concussion injured list after he took a foul ball of the mask during the fourth inning of Tuesday's game. In a corresponding move, the Angels selected the contract of C Dustin Garneau from Triple-A Salt Lake.
