[SIZE=1]MLB Betting trends: best pitchers to bet on at home and fade on the road
Rohit Ponnaiya

Kyle Hendricks is one of many starters in the majors who pitches like an ace at home and should be faded on the road.

Pitchers generally throw better at home; they're more familiar with the mound and the dimensions of the stadium, and let's face it, they're also just creatures of habit. For some starters the difference between how they perform at home and away is absolutely massive. Knowing which pitchers heat up at home and combust on the road can give you an extra edge when betting MLB odds.

Here are the starters that you should consider betting on at home and are "must fades" on the road this year. We focused on pitchers who have ERA numbers below 3.00 at home, with an ERA more than two and half runs higher on the road. Listed in order of best ERA at home.

Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs

Home: 4-1, 1.65 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, .215 BAA
Away: 3-4, 5.49 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, .290 BAA

The "Professor" takes batters to school at Wrigley Field with the second-lowest home ERA among all starters in the majors.

Caleb Smith, Miami Marlins

Home: 3-1, 1.84 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, .176 BAA
Away: 0-3, 4.66 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, .215 BAA

Smith's WHIP and BAA numbers on the road are actually pretty good, but that ERA isn't going to get him many wins especially on a Miami squad that's dead-last in the majors in runs per game.

Wade Miley, Houston Astros

Home: 4-1, 1.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, .207 BAA
Away: 2-3, 4.94 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .254 BAA

Miley strikes out 9.1 batters per nine innings at home, compared to just 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings on the road.

Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers

Home: 5-1, 2.05 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, .167 BAA
Road: 2-3, 5.67 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, .253 BAA

Oddly enough, Maeda's best road start of the year was at Coors Field back on April 5, when he allowed just one run through five innings.

James Paxton, New York Yankees

Home: 2-2, 2.10 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, .185 BAA
Away: 3-1, 5.96 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, .314 BAA

Yankees Stadium is generally considered one of the most home run-friendly parks in baseball, but that hasn't affected Paxton who has allowed just one homer in 34 1-3 innings at home.

Pablo Lopez, Miami Marlins

Home: 3-1, 2.13 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, .193 BAA
Away: 2-4, 6.82 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, .278 BAA

Lopez has allowed only one home run over 42 1-3 innings at home, while giving up seven homers in 34 1-3 innings on the road.
Patrick Corbin, Washington Nationals

Home: 4-1, 2.17 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, .181 BAA
Away: 2-4, 5.91 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, .279 BAA

Coming over from Arizona and hitter-friendly Chase Field, Corbin has been loving his new digs in Washington.

Steven Matz, New York Mets

Home: 3-0, 2.25 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, .228
Away: 2-5, 7.07 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, .306

Matz is tied for eighth among all MLB pitchers in home runs allowed with 18. 15 of those dingers have come on the road.

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees

Home: 4-1, 2.31 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, .214 BAA
Away: 1-3, 6.30 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, .306 BAA

This season might be an aberration for the 38-year-old, between 2016 and 2018 Sabathia had a lower ERA and BAA on the road than he did at home.

Domingo German, New York Yankees

Home: 4-1, 2.37 ERA, 1.12 WHIP .204 BAA
Away: 5-1, 4.99 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, .229 BAA

German has a much higher ERA on the road but as his other stats show he's still pretty good away from Yankee Stadium. He isn't someone I would necessarily bet against on the road.

Miles Mikolas, St. Louis Cardinals

Home: 4-4, 2.48 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, .223 BAA
Away: 1-4, 7.76 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, .346 BAA

Out of all the players on this list, Mikolas is the worst across the board in every away category and his BAA jumps a whopping .123 on the road.

Jack Flaherty, St. Louis Cardinals

Home: 3-2, 2.49 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, .185 BAA
Away: 1-2, 6.68 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, .288 BAA

Flaherty's home WHIP is the best on this list and the fourth-best in the majors among starting pitchers.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals

Home: 4-1, 2.68 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, .242 BAA
Away: 1-5, 6.56 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, .288 BAA

The third straight Cardinals pitcher on this list, suffice to say bettors should be wary of backing the Cards on the road.

Eric Lauer, San Diego Padres

Home: 3-3, 2.70 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, .244 BAA
Away: 2-4, 6.49 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, .293 BAA

Lauer's pitching stats on the road might be a bit skewed by two games at Coors Field where he was rocked for 13 runs in fewer than six innings of work. Take those two starts away and his road ERA is a more respectable 3.72.

Adrian Sampson, Texas Rangers

Home: 5-2, 2.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, .270 BAA
Away: 1-2, 6.92 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, .324 BAA

Sampson is 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA over his last seven home starts.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Yankees (9-1 last 10)

New York continues to roll on its current homestand prior to embarking on a long road trip. The Yankees seek the sweep of the Blue Jays this afternoon before traveling to London for a pair of games with the rival Red Sox on Saturday and Sunday. Since losing the first two games of its series at Chicago in mid-June, the Bronx Bombers have lost once in the past 10 contests, while sweeping Tampa Bay and taking three of four from Houston.

The Yankees edged the Jays last night, 4-3 as they failed to cash the run-line as a heavy favorite when Toronto scored one run in the ninth inning. James Paxton takes the mound this afternoon in the Bronx as the southpaw has won his last two starts against the White Sox and Astros, while allowing three runs in 11 innings of work. The last time Paxton faced Toronto (who he no-hit last season with the Mariners) on June 5, the Blue Jays managed an 11-7 win over the Yankees to cash as +180 underdogs.

Coldest team: Orioles (1-12 last 13)

It seems like this category is reserved for Baltimore, but no other team in baseball is close to slumping like the O?s. Following Tuesday?s 8-3 setback to San Diego in Manny Machado?s return to Camden Yards, the Orioles dropped to 4-18 this month. Baltimore?s pitching staff has yielded at least eight runs in five of the past seven games, while falling to 2-5 in interleague play this season.

The Orioles last won at home on June 11 against Toronto as Dylan Bundy will try to end Baltimore?s woes tonight. Bundy is 0-3 in his past three starts, while the Orioles have lost seven of his eight outings at Camden Yards this season. The Padres own a solid 4-1 record in Game 2?s of a road series after winning the opener, as the Orioles will try to buck that trend this evening.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Minor, Rangers (7-4, 2.52 ERA)

Minor has been one of the most impressive pitchers in the American League this season for the surging Rangers, who held off the Tigers in the opener of their series in Detroit on Tuesday. The Texas southpaw is undefeated in his last four starts, while tossing a gem against Cleveland his last time out by allowing three hits and one run in eight innings of a 4-2 home victory. Minor has put together a solid 3.03 ERA away from Arlington this season, as the Rangers have won four of his past six road starts.

Coldest pitcher: Nick Pivetta, Phillies (4-2, 5.54 ERA)

Earlier this month, Pivetta put together two of the best starts in his career by tossing six scoreless innings against the Dodgers and posting a complete-game victory over the Reds. But the Phillies? right-hander has gone backwards lately by yielding 15 hits and 10 runs in his past two outings on the road at Atlanta and Washington. The good news for Pivetta is he is pitching at Citizens Bank Park tonight, where the Phillies have won five of his six home starts. And the other piece of good news is he faces the Mets, who not only the Phillies have beaten twice in this series, but Pivetta held New York to three runs in a 14-3 blowout on April 16.

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (13-2-1 last 16)

Seattle may be sitting in last place of the AL West following a surprising start, but the Mariners? bats have woken up recently. The M?s crushed the Brewers in the opener of their interleague set at Miller Park last night, 8-3 to barely cash the OVER of 10 ?. Seattle has won five of its past six games, while scoring at least eight runs in four of those victories. Although there have been a few bumps in the road pitching-wise during this OVER streak, the Mariners have allowed three runs or less in four of the last six contests, while improving to 4-2 in the past six series openers.

Biggest UNDER run: Braves (5-1 last six)

Atlanta rebounded from an 8-3 loss at Wrigley Field on Monday to edge Chicago last night, 3-2. The Braves? offense has cooled off since a nine-game stretch in which they scored at least five runs, as Atlanta has plated four runs or fewer in four of the last five contests. Granted, Atlanta has hit the UNDER in the five of the last six games, but some of those totals are abnormally high. The first two games of this series in Chicago have seen totals hit 12, while the final game of the Washington series last weekend closed at 10 ?. Dallas Keuchel makes his second start as a Brave after giving up four runs in five innings of his Atlanta debut at Washington last week in a 4-3 setback.

Matchup to watch: Rays vs. Twins

Since dropping a 14-3 decision at Tropicana Field in late May, Minnesota has had its way with Tampa Bay by capturing the last four matchups. The Twins? offense hasn?t struggled in these wins either by putting up 5, 6, 9, and 9 runs in these victories, including knocking around 2018 Cy Young winner Blake Snell in a 9-4 triumph at Target Field last night. Minnesota?s lineup was held to five runs or fewer in six of its previous seven games before busting out on Tuesday, while improving to 25-13 at home.

Former Rays? right-hander Jake Odorizzi takes the mound against his old team in tonight?s affair in Minneapolis. Odorizzi never won more than 11 games in a season during his five-year tenure with Tampa Bay, but he has already racked up 10 victories in 2019, including six at home. Odorizzi went through an eight-start stretch in which he gave up one run or fewer before allowing four runs in each of his past two outings against Kansas City. The Twins? hurler didn?t yield a run in six innings at Tampa Bay earlier this month as Minnesota held on for a 9-7 win after the Twins built a 7-0 lead.

Charlie Morton counters for Tampa Bay, as the right-hander has won 37 of his past 48 decisions since 2017. Morton was set for a no-decision in his last start at Oakland as the Rays and Athletics were tied at 1-1 headed to the ninth inning. Tampa Bay put up three runs in the top of the ninth before Oakland rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the frame to stun the Rays, 5-4. Tampa Bay is 0-2 in Morton?s last two outings since winning his previous four starts, which included the 14-3 rout in the series opener at the Trop last month as a -150 favorite.

Betcha didn?t know:
Miami knocked off Washington in the first two matchups this season back in April, but the Nationals have captured five of the past six meetings. Max Scherzer shut down the Marlins in last night?s 6-1 blowout to drop Miami to 2-9 in its past 11 home contests. The last time Patrick Corbin faced the Marlins in D.C. last month, the southpaw tossed complete-game shutout in a 5-0 triumph as a -225 favorite.

Diamond Trends - Wednesday
Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Red Sox are 19-0 SU as a 130-plus favorite off a game as a favorite in which they scored first, trailed and won and it is before the All-Star break and not a series opener.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The White Sox are 0-20 SU as a road 140-plus dog off a road game when seeking same season revenge vs their opponent's starting pitcher and it is before the All-Star break.

Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Braves are 10-0 SU in franchise history off a game as a favorite in which Austin Riley struck out at least twice.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Cardinals are 0-7 SU with Adam Wainwright when they won in his last start against the current opponent. St. Louis was the favorite in four of the seven starts.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Trent Thornton, Toronto Blue Jays (2-5, 4.25 ERA, $-256):
The young Jays sure are taking their lumps in this rebuilding season, but there are definitely some bright spots on this roster. One of those has to be Thornton. Acquired in a trade from Houston, the right-hander is making the most of his Major League experience and is dealing right now.

Thornton has allowed just two runs in his last two starts, allowing 14 hits while striking out 14 in 13 innings pitched. The impressive part about that? Those starts came at Houston and Boston. It doesn?t get any easier for Thornton this afternoon as he takes the mound at Yankee Stadium. The Jays are currently +220 road dogs with a total of 10.

SLUMPING

Matt Strahm, San Diego Padres (2-6, 4.85 ERA, $-154):
Things sure have cooled off for Strahm after a hot start to the season. The Padres? southpaw is 0-2 in his last three starts where he has pitched to an ugly 12.08 ERA with a WHIP of 1.89. He just hasn?t been able to keep players off the bases letting them get on at a nearly .400 clip. Strahm will look to bounce back as a slight -120 road favorite in Baltimore. The total is currently 10.

SOUTHPAW SHOWDOWN

It?s a battle of left-handers as the Rangers? Mike Minor toes the rubber in Detroit against the Tigers? Matthew Boyd. Minor is having a career resurgence in Texas pitching to a 2.52 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, while Boyd is breaking out for Detroit with a 3.61 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP and they should have the edge over the hitters tonight.

The Rangers hit .225 against lefties on the road, while the Tiger hit .224 against them at home. The Under 8.5 is a solid play, but a really nice play will be the Over on Boyd?s strikeout total. He has a very high 11.26 strikeout/nine innings and is facing a Rangers team that strikes out the second most in the MLB. His strikeout total is set at 6.5 tonight.

Yankees homer again, beat Blue Jays on Torres' RBI in 9th
June 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gleyber Torres lined a game-winning single in the ninth inning and the New York Yankees hit two more homers to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-7 Wednesday.

Didi Gregorius and DJ LeMahieu connected as the Yankees extended their major league record to 29 straight games with a home run. The AL East leaders overcame two homers and a double by Lourdes Gurriel Jr., plus an early 5-0 deficit, to finish a power-packed 9-1 homestand.

Now, they'll head straight from Yankee Stadium to England, where they'll enjoy two days off before playing the Boston Red Sox at London Stadium on Saturday and Sunday in the first major league games in Europe.

Zack Britton wasn't so great in giving up Cavan Biggio's RBI single in the ninth that made it 7-all. But Britton (3-1) wound up with the win to close out a three-game sweep.

Gregorius got an infield hit off Nick Kingham (3-2) with one out in the ninth, Aaron Hicks walked and Torres followed with his hit.

ATHLETICS 2, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Beau Taylor and Matt Chapman homered, and Daniel Mengden pitched six scoreless innings to lead Oakland.

Mengden (2-1) gave up four hits and struck out five for his first win since May 18 at Detroit. He took the starting rotation spot of Frankie Montas, who was suspended 80 games June 21 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Yusmeiro Petit pitched the seventh, Joakim Soria the eighth and Liam Hendriks got the last three outs for his second save in four chances. Hendriks has not allowed a run in 23 of his last 25 appearances.

Oakland got its fifth shutout of the season - first on the road - and first since May 7 against Cincinnati.

Adam Wainwright (5-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

St. Louis was shutout for the sixth time this season, and the third time in its last 14 games.

PHILLIES 5, METS 4, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jay Bruce ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning against his former team, and Philadelphia rallied to beat reeling New York.

Mets lefty Jason Vargas tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in his first start since being fined for an expletive-filled confrontation with a reporter, but was pulled after only 77 pitches and the Phillies overcame a 4-0 deficit against New York's leaky bullpen.

Rhys Hoskins drew a walk from Stephen Nogosek (0-1), and J.T. Realmuto singled. Roman Quinn ran for Hoskins and Bruce, traded by the Mets twice in the last two years, sent a long drive over center fielder Juan Lagares' head to give Philadelphia its third straight win over New York after a seven-game losing streak.

Edgar Garcia (2-0) tossed a perfect 10th for the win.

Dominic Smith and Jeff McNeil hit solo homers for the Mets, who have lost four in a row.

INDIANS 5, ROYALS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out a season-high 12 in 6 2/3 innings, and Cleveland beat Kansas City.

Bauer (6-6) had the 23rd double-figure strikeout game of his career and his fourth this season. The right-hander gave up one run and didn't allow a hit until rookie Humberto Arteaga singled with two outs in the fifth.

Bauer matched a career high by throwing 127 pitches and held the Royals to three hits.

Jake Bauers and Tyler Naquin homered off Jakob Junis in the fourth.

Jason Kipnis, Oscar Mercado and Jordan Luplow also drove in runs for Cleveland. Francisco Lindor was 3 for 4 and scored two runs.

Junis (4-7) allowed four runs in six innings and hasn't won since May 30.

Lucas Duda homered in the ninth for Kansas City off Nick Wittgren.

WHITE SOX 8, RED SOX 7

BOSTON (AP) - Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park in the ninth inning as Chicago recovered after blowing the lead in the eighth.

The White Sox had leads of 3-0, 5-2 and 6-4 before the Red Sox scored three in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead and hand Chicago closer Alex Colome (3-1) his first blown save in 17 opportunities.

Matt Barnes (3-3) gave up three straight hits in the top of the ninth - Leury Garcia was caught stealing - including Abreu's 19th homer of the season.

Abreu had three hits and four RBIs, and Garcia also had three hits for Chicago. James McCann had an RBI single and added a solo home run against Chris Sale as Chicago pounced on the Boston starter for five runs in the first three innings.

PADRES 10, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Franmil Reyes hit two of San Diego's five homers, Eric Hosmer drove in four runs and the Padres finished a two-game sweep.

Greg Garcia got the long ball barrage started with a two-run drive in the second inning off Dylan Bundy (3-10). After Reyes hit a solo shot in the third and a two-run drive in the fifth to make it 6-3, Hosmer went deep with a runner on in the sixth and Hunter Renfroe connected leading off the seventh.

It marked the 10th time this season that Baltimore yielded at least five home runs. Bundy gave up two of them and now has allowed 19 homers in 16 starts.

Jonathan Villar and Pedro Severino homered for the Orioles, who have lost 13 of 14. Baltimore owns the worst record in the majors (22-58) and the worst at home (9-30).

San Diego starter Matt Strahm (3-6) pitched six innings, allowing four runs and five hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Craig Stammen got the last four outs for his fourth save.

ROCKIES 6, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - David Dahl hit a go-ahead grand slam in the third and drove in a career-high five runs to lead Colorado.

Dahl connected off Jeff Samardzija for his second career grand slam, with the other coming last Sept. 10 against Arizona. It marked the first grand slam ever hit by a Rockies player in San Francisco.

Dahl added an RBI single in the seventh. He had a two-run shot in the series opener.

The big swing in the series finale backed German Marquez (8-3), who immediately surrendered Pablo Sandoval's homer the next inning but won his second straight decision. Marquezallowed three runs and seven hits, struck out two and walked two over five innings. Wade Davis finished for his 11th save.

Samardzija (4-7) was tagged for five runs and three hits in five innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, DODGERS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Eduardo Escobar's three-run home gave Arizona a four-run lead before Los Angeles recorded an out, and the Diamondbacks cruised to the win.

The Dodgers, with the best record in the majors at 55-27, lost for just the second time - both to Arizona in the three-game series - in nine games, while Arizona finished a nine-game homestand 3-6.

Jarrod Dyson had three hits, an RBI and swiped two bases to raise his NL-leading total to 19. He also had a home run-stealing catch over the right-center field fence.

Ildemaro Vargas hit a two-run double, and pitcher Taylor Clarke (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings.

The Dodgers' Cody Bellinger hit his 26th home run of the season, tying him for for fourth-most before the All-Star break in franchise history.

The Diamondbacks roughed up Tony Gonsolin (0-1) right away in his major league debut.

Gonsolin got his first major league hit in his first career at-bat in the thirdn eight starts at Triple-A Reno.

RANGERS 4, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Mike Minor allowed five hits in his second complete game of the year, and Willie Calhoun, Jeff Mathis and Danny Santana homered in the fifth inning to lift Texas.

Minor (8-4) struck out seven with two walks, throwing 108 pitches in his third career complete game. He now has 12 consecutive starts allowing three runs or fewer while pitching at least five innings.

Matthew Boyd (5-6) struck out 11 for Detroit in seven innings, and he too allowed only five hits - but three of them were solo homers in the fifth. The Rangers are now a season-high eight games over .500.

Texas has won five of six, and after taking the first two games at Detroit, the Rangers have won or split each of their last nine series.

Brandon Dixon homered for Detroit's only run. The Tigers have lost six straight and 10 of 11.

NATIONALS 7, MARLINS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Matt Adams hit a three-run homer to lead Washington.

Patrick Corbin pitched seven solid innings and snapped a four-game road losing streak. Corbin (7-5) allowed one run and three hits, walked one and struck out nine. He struck out Cesar Puello in the second inning to reach 1,000 for his career.

Trea Turner and Adam Eaton had two hits each and Anthony Rendon drove in two runs for the Nationals, who have won seven of nine.

Miami starter Zac Gallen (0-1) had allowed one hit and retired eight straight through five before Washington chased him with a four-run sixth.

Washington led 4-1 and padded their advantage with a three-run ninth against reliever Tayron Guerrero.

The Marlins rallied with four runs off reliever Javy Guerra in the ninth before Sean Doolittle struck out JT Riddle for his 17th save.

ANGELS 5, REDS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Justin Bour hit two homers, Mike Trout scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning and Los Angeles got back above .500.

Shohei Ohtani went 3 for 3 with a walk for the Angels (41-40), who hit the halfway point of their season with six wins in nine games after this two-game interleague sweep.

Trout walked leading off the eighth and advanced on a wild pickoff throw by Raisel Iglesias (1-7). After Ohtani singled Trout to third, Cincinnati got two outs before David Fletcher hit a deep grounder to shortstop Jose Iglesias, who couldn't get off a throw while Trout scampered home.

Bour followed with an impressive three-run homer, adding it to his solo shot in the fifth for his first multihomer game since joining the Angels.

Yasiel Puig homered in the fifth for the Reds, who lost four straight to close out their six-game road trip.

Cam Bedrosian (3-3) pitched around Justin Upton's two-base error in left field to work a scoreless eighth.

Thursday?s quiz
What number did Michael Jordan wear the year he played minor league baseball?

Wednesday?s quiz
Burgess Meredith played Rocky Balboa?s trainer Mick in the Rocky movies; Meredith played the Penguin on the old Batman TV series.

Tuesday?s quiz
Before moving to Atlanta, the Braves called Milwaukee, Boston home.

*********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) When you?re a college basketball coach trying to win, you do all kinds of stuff to get players:

Oklahoma State hired the older brother of top prospect Cade Cunningham as its new assistant coach; this is perfectly legit, has been done many times, usually with a father- that is how Kansas got Danny Manning back in the 80?s, they hired his father as an assistant. Ed Manning played in the NBA, but was a truck driver when Kansas hired him.

Cannen Cunningham played at SMU from 2011-15 and spent last season at Tulane as the associate director of video operations under Mike Dunleavy Sr.

12) What happens if the Cunningham kid goes somewhere other than Oklahoma State? Does Oklahoma State tell the brother to take a hike? Chances are strong the kid is going to OSU.

11) The last few weeks, I?ve heard five different Bronx baseball fans refer to DJ LeMahieu as ?this kid LeMahieu? as if they had never heard of him before this year. Oy.

LeMahieu will be 31 on July 13; this is his ninth year in the major leagues, he has 1,125 hits and a career on-base %age of .353. Two All-Star games, three Golden Gloves; he?s been a really good player for several years, but since a lot of the Bronx fanbase just follows their own team and not the whole sport, they just don?t know.

10) Blake Snell?s last three starts for Tampa Bay:

7 IP, 18 hits, 17 runs (16 earned), 9 walks, 7 strikeouts.

When you?re using an opener 60% of the time, you need your two aces to give the bullpen lot of rest and that isn?t happening for the Rays right now.

9) Kerry Blackshear transfers from Virginia Tech to Florida, big pickup for the Gators- some pundits have now put Florida in the preseason top 10 for college hoop.

8) Middle of the night a few nights ago, Moneyball appeared on TV, which was fine with me; hadn?t seen it in a while. I won?t embarrass myself by telling you how many times I?ve seen it, but couple of thoughts popped up in my head while watching it this time:

? Bill James should be in the Hall of Fame, as a contributor; he certainly changed the game.
? There must be some great discussions/arguments behind the scenes now, with the old school baseball guys taking on the numbers guys, as far as strategy goes.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Bronx put Giancarlo Stanton (knee) back on the IL.
? Detroit recalled 3B Jeimer Candelario from AAA.
? Angels recalled P?s Jaime Barria, Trevor Cahill
? Twins? OF Eddie Rosario (hamstring) left Wednesday?s game early

6) Kevin Durant declined his $31.5M player option and will be an unrestricted free agent; will be interesting to see what kind of contract a 31-year old guy (he turns 31 in September) with a torn achilles gets. History tells us achilles injuries aren?t kind to basketball players.

5) New York City is made up of five boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Queens- the borough of Queens, by itself, has more people than 16 states.

4) I?ll say this once and only once: I don?t give a rat?s ass who wins the MVP in any league, ever, in any sport. Some days, it is all ESPN talks about. Individual awards? They. do. not. matter.

3) White Sox 8, Red Sox 7? Jose Abreu homered in the ninth inning for the win.

2) San Diego 10, Baltimore 5? Orioles have allowed 165 home runs n 80 games; not good.

1) Bob Ley is retiring after 40 years at ESPN; he joined ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor in 1979, on the third day ESPN was on the air. In 1980, he hosted the first NCAA selection show and live broadcast of the NFL draft and continued in that role for the next nine years.

In a modern age when every TV studio person has to have their own shtick, Ley had no shtick, he was just really good at his job, and he will be missed.

LEADING OFF: All-Star starters announced, Kimbrel joins Cubs
June 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

STAR-GAZING

Starters for the All-Star Game on July 9 in Cleveland will be announced at 7 p.m. EDT, a few hours after polls close online. There could be some surprises, too. In a new election process this year, candidates were narrowed down in fan balloting to three finalists per position. Then those vote totals were wiped out and fans had 28 hours beginning Wednesday at noon EDT to choose from among the finalists. Pitchers and reserves selected by the players and commissioner's office will be revealed Sunday.

BULLPEN BOOST

Craig Kimbrel joins the Cubs for their series finale against Atlanta at Wrigley Field. The seven-time All-Star closer completed his minor league assignment Tuesday and traveled to Chicago on Wednesday. He pitched in four games for Triple-A Iowa, allowing one run and two hits in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander worked a clean ninth with two strikeouts Tuesday in Iowa's 5-1 win over Omaha, throwing 16 pitches.

Kimbrel and the Cubs finalized a $43 million, three-year contract on June 7. The 31-year-old reliever has 333 career saves, including 42 last season for World Series champion Boston.

OUT AGAIN

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is back on the 10-day injured list with a strained right knee, barely a week after returning from a series of setbacks that kept him out of action for almost three months. New York manager Aaron Boone said it's likely Stanton will be sidelined for longer than 10 days. ''It'll be more than that,'' Boone said. ''That's when the reevaluation kind of happens.''

Stanton has played only nine games this season, having missed significant time with a torn biceps and strains in his shoulder and calf. He is hitting .290 with one home run and seven RBIs.

Outfielder Mike Tauchman was called up from Triple-A to replace Stanton on the 25-man roster and traveled with the Yankees to London for their two-game series against the rival Red Sox that begins Saturday.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN REMATCH

The major league-leading Dodgers (55-27) open a four-game series in Colorado with Walker Buehler (8-1, 2.96 ERA) on the mound. Rockies right-hander Peter Lambert (2-0, 5.85) faces Los Angeles for the second consecutive start. The Dodgers won three straight home games against Colorado last weekend in walk-off fashion.

MINNESOTA M-A-S-H UNIT

After outfielder Eddie Rosario exited Wednesday night's game with a sprained left ankle, the Twins were pretty confident they dodged a bullet. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said Rosario likely would not need to be placed on the injured list. He was on crutches as a precaution, but an MRI revealed no serious damage. ''It seems like we probably lucked out,'' Baldelli said. ''It might be a little early to say that, but I'll say it anyway.'' Rosario leads the team and ranks sixth in the American League with 20 home runs. Minnesota already was missing center fielder Byron Buxton (wrist) and right fielder Max Kepler (elbow) against Tampa Bay.

Chicago Hope

The Atlanta Braves have recalled RHP Bryse Wilson from Triple-A Gwinnett to make the start on Thursday afternoon against RHP Tyler Chatwood and the Chicago Cubs in the series finale. The Braves have won just two of three in the series with the 'under' connecting in each of the three outings so far.

Wilson has made five appearances in the majors, including two starts, and he has posted a 7.15 ERA and 2.029 WHIP across 11 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts during that span. He made start earlier this season in Philadelphia, coughing up four earned runs, five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in just 3 1/3 innings, needing 99 pitches to make it through the outing. The 'over' easily connected in that outing, and has cashed in each of his two appearances so far this season, too.

The under is 4-0 in the past four games overall for the Braves, while going 4-0 in their past four on the road, too. The under is also 4-1 in the past five against a right-handed starting pitcher, and 4-1 in the past five on the road vs. RHP, too. The under has hit in seven of the past 10 overall against a winning team.

As far as the Cubs are concerned, the under has hit in four in a row, too, while going 5-1 in the past six at home against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is also 4-0 in the past four inside the NL East, while going a perfect 5-0 in the past five against teams with a winning overall mark. They're even more impressive at home against the under, going 20-7 in the past 26 at home against teams with a winning overall mark. However, in Tyler Chatwood's past eight starts, the over has cashed in six of those outings, while going 5-1 in his past six at the Friendly Confines. The under is 5-2 in the past seven meetings at Wrigley Field, too.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, June 27

Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg takes the ball at Marlins Park against RHP Sandy Alcantara. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four road games for Washington, while going 3-1-1 in the past five vs. RHP. The under is 19-7-1 in the past 27 by Strasburg on the road, however, while going 8-3 in his past 11 road outings against a team with a losing overall mark. The over is 5-1-1 in Miami's past seven at home, and 3-1-1 in their past five in South Florida vs. RHP. However, the under is a perfect 4-0 in Alcantara's past four inside the division, while going 6-2 across his past eight assignments overall. The under is also 7-3 in Alcantara's past 10 home outings. For Strasburg, the under is 5-0 in his past five outings in Miami, 7-1 in his past seven overall against the Fish and 23-11-3 in the past 37 meetings between these sides overall in Miami.

The Diamondbacks recall LHP Alex Young for a start against the Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco. He'll take on RHP Tyler Beede is a potentially high-scoring game in the Bay Area. Young had an ERA north of six, albeit in the PCL, which has most of its games played at elevation.

The over is 9-3 in the past 12 games overall, and 6-2 in the past eight road outings, too. The over is also 8-3 in the past 11 vs. RHP, while going 6-2 in the past eight inside the division. The over is also 4-1 in the past five vs. LHP, while going 9-4-1 in his past 14 at home against a southpaw. The over is 4-1 in Beede's past five inside the division, too. In this series the over has cashed in five of the past six meetings overall.

Wind Report
Winds will be rather variable at most MLB outdoor venues on Thursday. However, the Diamondbacks and Giants will be contending with a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field at Oracle Park in San Francisco, a fact which will not aid fairly inexperienced starters Young and Beede.

Friday, June 28

The Dodgers and Rockies square off at Coors Field in Denver, and it's LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu taking the ball for L.A. against RHP Antonio Senzatela. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four for the Dodgers against a right-handed starting pitcher, and 7-0 in their past seven road games against a team with a winning overall mark. The over is 6-2-1 in the past nine overall, while going -2-1 in their past nine inside the division, too. The under is 4-1 in the past five starts by Ryu, while going 33-16-2 across his past 51 road outings.

For the Rockies, the over is a perfect 4-0 in their past four at home, while going 5-2 in the past seven against a southpaw. The over is also 10-3-1 in the past 14 for Colorado against a starting pitcher with a WHIP under 1.15. For Senzatela, though, it's all under all the time. The under is 3-0-1 in his past four against teams with a winning record, and 7-0 in his past seven starts in Game 2 of a series. The under is also 18-7-1 in the past 26 starts overall, while going 9-4 in the past 13 at home and 10-2-1 in the past 13 against NL West foes.

Cardinals RHP Michael Wacha takes the ball against LHP Eric Lauer and the Padres on Friday night in a battle of two teams fairly evenly matched. The under is 7-3 in the past 10 overall for the Cardinals, and 8-2 in the past 10 in Game 1 of a new series. However, the over is 5-1 in the past six road outings, and 7-3 in their past 10 against NL West opponents. For the Padres, the over is 2-0-2 in the past four overall, and 8-2 in the past 10 against winning teams. However, the under is 4-1-1 in the past six at home vs. RHP, and 4-1-1 in the past six at Petco. For Lauer, the under is 5-1 in his past six at home, and 7-3-2 in his past 12 in Game 1 of a new series.

Wind Report
Like Thursday night, the only wind trouble spot will be alongside the San Francisco Bay at Oracle Park for the D-Backs vs. Giants. The winds will be blowing at 10-13 mph again to straightaway center field.
