STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (5-7, 4.55 ERA, $-504):
Has Snell finally turned the corner? The 2018 AL Cy Young winner has struggled this season but the Rays have gone 3-0 over his last three starts and Snell has a 2.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 21 strikouts through 16 innings during that span. Most impressively, two of those starts came against the Yankees and their scary lineup.

Snell and the Rays are big -270 favorites at home against the White Sox today and the O/U is installed at 7.5.

SLUMPING

Drew Smyly, Philadelphia Phillies (1-5, 8.42 ERA, $-236):
Sadly, it looks like Smyly might never be the same after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017. Smyly hasn't pitched in over a month but he had been awful for the Texas Rangers up to that point, allowing 25 runs and 11 homers through 17 2-3 innings over his last five starts. And four of those starts came against weak-hitting teams like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Seattle.

Smyly will be making his first start for Philly today, after being signed just a few days ago. The Phillies are in Pittsburgh for an inter-state matchup at 1:35 p.m ET, but the odds have not opened yet. The Pirates have been the best Over bet in the majors at home going 23-7-2 O/U in their last 32 games at PNC Park. Once the line drops it might be worthwhile to hammer the Over.

******************************

3 STRIKES

EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN TEXAS

Massive 280-pound Rangers pitcher Lance Lynn takes to the mound for today's matchup against inter-state rival Houston. Lynn has been money in the bank for bettors, turning a profit of $637 this season based on $100 units. Lynn is 12-5 with a 3.87 ERA and pitched seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 Rangers win against the Astros just 10 days ago.

The 'Stros will give Rogelio Armenteros his first career start after three appearances in relief this season. Texas could be an intriguing underdog play at +120.

RIGHT ON THE MONEY

Speaking of starters turning a profit, the top two money starters in the majors will also be pitching today. Andrew Cashner (9-4, 4.09 ERA) will be making his second start for Boston after being roughed up for five runs in his Red Sox debut against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. He will be facing his old teammates in Baltimore and the BoSox are -215 faves.

Now that Casher will be far more likely to be favored in games it will be difficult for him to stay on top the money leaderboard where he currently sits at $1196.

Just behind him at $997 is Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff who is 11-3 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Woodruff and the Brewers are -152 favorites on the road in Arizona and are 6-1 in their last seven meetings with the Diamondbacks.

MENEZ TO SOCIETY

Lefty Conner Menez will throw his first ever pitch in the big leagues today as the Giants host the Mets. The prospect will begin his major league career as a -125 favorite. The Mets are 5-2 in their last seven games on the road and are 8-3 in their previous 11 contests in San Fran.

That said, the Giants might be the hottest team in the league going 14-3 over their last 17 games and Mets starter Steven Matz is 2-6 with a 6.85 ERA and .307 BAA on the road.

Phils win in Pittsburgh on Hoskins' HR; fan walks to plate
July 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

Philadelphia hitter Brad Miller for a handshake before being apprehended, and the Phillies later beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Sunday on Rhys Hoskins' home run in the 11th inning.

Moments after Bryce Harper argued a called third strike and Hoskins spiked his bat after being hit by a pitch, things turned bizarre in the sixth inning at PNC Park.

That's when a man carrying a cellphone came out of the crowd and strolled toward Miller in the batter's box. Miller backed away and the man kept walking, leisurely getting near the Phillies' dugout on the first base side, where he was handcuffed by security personnel and led away.

Miller then grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Hoskins hit his 21st home run, connecting off Chris Stratton (1-3). The drive came right after Harper again seemed displeased with plate umpire Ben May when striking out looking to start the inning.

Phillies reliever Ranger Suarez (3-0) got Starling Marte to ground out to end the 10th, stranding Adam Frazier at third, and worked around a hit in the 11th.

ORIOLES 5, RED SOX 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Asher Wojciechowski took an unlikely no-hitter into the seventh inning, Trey Mancini homered twice off Andrew Cashner and Baltimore beat Boston to win its first series from the Red Sox in 11 tries since 2017.

Making his 15th career start, Wojciechowski (1-3) came in with a 6.49 career ERA and was facing the highest-scoring team in the majors. The 30-year-old responded with the best outing of his life, allowing one hit over 7 1/3 innings and finishing with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Rafael Devers led off the seventh with a double off the right-field wall to break up Wojciechowski's bid.

Paul Fry got the final two outs in the eighth and Mychal Givens worked the ninth to complete the one-hitter and end Boston's run of 81 games without being blanked. It was also the first time in 11 games the Red Sox failed to hit a home run.

DODGERS 9, MARLINS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Walker Buehler struck out 11 over seven innings and the Los Angeles hit a trio of home runs to complete a three-game sweep of Miami.

Max Muncy, Joc Pederson and A.J. Pollock went deep as the first-place Dodgers won for the sixth time in nine games since the All-Star break. Buehler recorded his third double-digit strikeout game this season.

Marlins rookie Jordan Yamamoto not only lost for the first time in seven major league starts, but the home runs by Muncy and Pederson were the first ones he's allowed in his career. Yamamoto (4-1) had the third-longest winning streak to begin a career in Marlins history.

One day after the Dodgers' bullpen blew a 6-0 lead before the offense rallied, Buehler (9-1) took the heat off the relievers by giving up just five hits and no walks.

ANGELS 9, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Resurgent slugger Albert Pujols and Mike Trout homered, Brian Goodwin connected twice and Los Angeles beat Seattle.

Pujols sliced a second-inning solo drive into the right field seats for his 648th career homer.

The 39-year-old Pujols joined home run champ Barry Bonds and Hall of Famers Eddie Murray and Frank Robinson as the only players to tally at least 15 homers in each of their first 19 seasons.

Pujols drove in two runs and has 14 RBIs in his last eight games. He got two hits and moved past Paul Waner for 16th place on the career list 3,154.

Trout added to his AL-leading totals with his 32nd home run and 79th RBI, hitting a solo shot in the seventh.

BRAVES 7, NATIONALS 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Kevin Gausman pitched into the eighth inning after missing more than a month, Josh Donaldson and Ronald Acuna Jr. homered, and Atlanta beat Washington to protect its NL East lead.

Nick Markakis hit a two-run single in the first off Joe Ross (0-2). Donaldson added his sixth-inning homer off Ross and a run-scoring single in the seventh. Acuna launched a two-run homer off Kyle McGowin in the eighth.

Following a split of the four-game series, the first-place Braves still lead the Nationals by 6+ games.

Gausman (3-5) made his first start since June 10 after recovering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He allowed five hits and one run in seven-plus innings, with eight strikeouts and no walks.

ROCKIES 8, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - James Paxton allowed a leadoff home run for the second straight outing when Charlie Blackmon shook out of a slump and started Colorado to a win over New York that halted a six-game losing streak.

On the second consecutive day with a 94-degree temperature at game time, DJ LaMahieu homered on the first pitch from German Marquez (9-5) in the bottom half. But Marquez rebounded from his worst big league start and cooled the Yankees' bats after that. Colorado took a 5-1 lead in the third, knocked out Paxton (5-5) in the fourth and ended New York's five-game winning streak.

Blackmon went 4 for 5, Nolan Arenado hit a tiebreaking, two-run double and David Dahl added a two-run single in the third, when three runs were unearned because first baseman Luke Voit allowed Tony Wolters' sacrifice bunt to bounce off his glove for an error.

CARDINALS 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yairo Munoz celebrated a rare start with a home run and a triple to help St. Louis beat Cincinnati.

Munoz, making his 16th start among 55 games, also singled to finish with three of the six hits for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-3 since the All-Star break.

His second homer of the season in the ninth, off Raisel Iglesias, gave St. Louis an insurance run.

The Reds avoided their ninth shutout loss of the season on Phillip Ervin's eighth-inning pinch-hit home run off Andrew Miller.

INDIANS 5, ROYALS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor homered after originally being scheduled to get the day off, Jose Ramirez hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth and Cleveland beat Kansas City.

Lindor talked his way into the lineup at designated hitter after manager Terry Francona planned on resting the All-Star shortstop. His two-run homer in the third tied the game at 2-all.

Ramirez's leadoff homer put Cleveland ahead in the sixth and the Indians went on to their seventh win in eight games. Cleveland has also won 13 of 16.

Rookie Zach Plesac (4-3) allowed two runs in six innings. Brad Hand allowed Bubba Starling's first major league home run in the ninth, but struck out the next three hitters for his 27th save in 28 opportunities.

Glenn Sparkman (4-5) allowed both homers and gave up five runs - four earned - in 5 2/3 innings.

TIGERS 4, BLUE JAYS 3, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run, and Detroit snapped its six-game losing streak.

The Tigers won for only the eighth time in their last 41 games - and this victory didn't come easily. Closer Shane Greene allowed a tying, two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the ninth, but Castellanos connected on the first pitch thrown by Tim Mayza (0-1) for his 11th homer of the season.

Nick Ramirez (5-3) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th for Detroit.

RAYS 4, WHITE SOX 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell struck out 10 in six scoreless innings, Travis d'Arnaud hit his first grand slam and Tampa Bay stopped its longest losing streak of the year at five games by beating Chicago.

Snell (6-7) allowed three hits and two walks while throwing a season-high 109 pitches.

D'Arnaud had been hitless in 11 at-bats since a three-homer game Monday night in a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees that preceded his team's recent skid.

Yolmer Sanchez got his 21st triple since 2017 for the White Sox, who won the first two games of the series and were seeking their first sweep since May 27-29 against Kansas City.

ASTROS 5, RANGERS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Michael Brantley homered twice, Jose Altuve also went deep and Houston beat struggling Texas for its fifth straight victory.

Rogelio Armenteros (1-0) pitched five solid innings in his first major league start, sending Texas to its seventh loss in a row.

Brantley put the AL West leaders on the board with a two-run drive to right-center in the first. He added a solo shot to right field in the eighth.

Lance Lynn (12-6) matched a career high with 12 strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed four runs and seven hits.

TWINS 7, ATHLETICS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Max Kepler drove in four runs, including the game-winner to cap a two-run rally in the ninth inning, and Minnesota beat Oakland.

Ehire Adrianza's third hit of the game was a triple off Liam Hendriks (2-1) that scored Luis Arraez from first base with one out in the ninth. After Hendriks struck out Jason Castro, Kepler lined the first pitch into left-center for his third hit.

Hendriks had picked up saves in each of the last two games and hadn't allowed an earned run in 20 2/3 innings.

Reliever Kohl Stewart (2-1) earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth. The Twins stranded 12 runners through the first eight innings and blew an early 4-0 lead before coming back to earn a split of their four-game series with Oakland.

PADRES 5, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Francisco Mejia homered, Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in three runs and San Diego avoided the sweep in Chicago.

Mejia and Tatis had two hits apiece for the Padres, who scored three runs in the ninth and have won just two of their last nine.

Kyle Hendricks (7-8) allowed two runs in seven innings and Anthony Rizzo had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who are 7-2 after the All-Star break. Cal Quantrill (3-2) threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, retiring 14 of his final 15 batters. He struck out six and walked none.

GIANTS 3, METS 2, 12 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Yastrzemski homered with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning to give San Francisco a 3-2 victory over New York.

The Giants hadn't had a hit since the fourth when Yastrzemski lofted a full-count pitch from Robert Gsellman (1-2) the other way into the left-center stands. Yastrzemski is the grandson of Hall of Fame slugger Carl Yastrzemski.

Buster Posey had two hits and scored twice to help the surging Giants (50-50) get back to .500 with their 15th win in 18 games. San Francisco took three of four from New York for its first series win over the Mets since 2014. All three wins came in extra innings.

Zach Green added two hits in his major league debut for the Giants.

BREWERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Tyler Saladino had his first career grand slam, Mike Moustakas hit a go-ahead run-scoring single in the eighth inning and Milwaukee beat Arizona.

Saladino broke out of a season-long slump with his first homer of the year, a grand slam off Alex Young in the fourth inning after Milwaukee fell behind 4-0.

Moustakas hit a go-ahead three-run homer in Saturday night's 8-3 win and put the Brewers ahead late again, chopping a single through the middle after Keston Hiura led off the eighth inning with a triple against Yoan Lopez (1-4).

Freddy Peralta (4-3) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Josh Hader worked around a single in the ninth for his 22nd save. The Brewers have won five of six.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Average ticket prices for college football games this year:

? Georgia $487

? Ohio State $352

? Michigan $285

? Notre Dame $276

? Alabama $249

? Nebraska $232

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??

13) Kansas City Royals won the World Series four years ago; they struck out 973 times the entire regular season.

Today is July 22, and Seattle/Texas have already struck out more than that this season.

12) Houston?s Yuli Gurriel has 13 homers and 28 RBIs in his last 22 games; he?s homered in five of his last six home games.

11) Boston?s Rick Porcello won his last three starts, despite allowing 16 runs in 17.2 IP; Red Sox scored 50 runs in his last four starts.

10) Chances are you had a better Sunday than golfer JB Holmes, who started out 66-68-69 at the British Open, but then imploded with an 87 Thursday, shooting a 46 on the back nine.

9) Run differential is a misleading stat; Arizona is +63, the Giants are -42, but both teams are 50-50, and thats the only stat the really counts.

8) Kawhi Leonard was at the Pacquiao-Thurman fight in Las Vegas Saturday night and was wearing one of his championship rings from the Spurs. Now you know why some of these guys go around with bodyguards; thats a pretty expensive ring.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Giants DFA?d P Derek Holland.
? Orioles DFA?d Keon Broxton.
? Rays put OF Kevin Keirmaier (thumb) on the IL.
? Rockies DFA?d 1B Mark Reynolds

6) Giants 3, Mets 2 (12)? On June 29, San Francisco was 35-47; the only thing that mattered was where they were trading Madison Bumgarner. Now the Giants are 50-50, 2.5 games out of a playoff spot and maybe Bumgarner ain?t going anywhere.

5) Colorado 8, New York 4? Bronx Bombers are 10-6 this month; 0-4 when Paxton starts, 10-2 with everyone else. Rockies lost 13 of their last 16 games.

4) Orioles 5, Red Sox 0? Boston gets one hit in 7.1 innings against Asher Wojciechowski, and you have to think the Red Sox are going to make a big splash on the trade market. Red Sox are three games out of a playoff spot- they play New York next weekend.

3) Phil Mickelson and Eldrick Woods have played in 83 majors together; this week was first time they both missed the cut in the same major.

2) If you don?t think time flies, NFL training camps open this week. Can?t even imagine what football was like in the old days, when teams did two-a-day practices in pads in this heat, for most of the summer.

1) Nothing against Harold Baines, but he is a Hall of Famer and Dave Parker isn?t?

Ballpark Figures - Week 18
Joe Williams

Bring Their 'A' Game

The Oakland Athletics hit the road for the Gulf Coast to battle the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. The A's enter the series 6 1/2 games back of the Astros for first place in the American League West Division, so they'll need to bring their 'A' game (yep, said it again!).

The A's have been red-hot lately, winning 21 of their past 29 games on the road, while going 38-18 across the past 56 outings to get themselves right back into the hunt for a playoff spot as we wrap up the month of July. A good reason for their resurgence has been their ability to hit right-handed pitchers, as they're 20-7 in the past 27 vs. RHP, and 8-3 in the past 11 on the road against righties. They are also 7-1 in the past eight games inside the division, while going 12-1 in the past 13 games following a loss. Oakland has also won four of the past five in Game 1 of a new series.

Houston has won five straight, and they're 5-0 in the past five games against teams with a winning overall record while winning four straight against right-handed starting pitchers, too. Like the A's, the Astros have also been hot inside the division, winning 39 of the past 52 (.750 winning percentage) against AL West foes. The Astros turn to RHP Gerrit Cole, and that usually ends up favorably. The Astros are 22-5 in the past 27 starts by Cole, while going 5-1 in his past six against winning teams and 4-1 in his past six inside the division, too. Meanwhile, Houston is also 49-20 in their past 69 games at 'The Juice Box', while going 16-5 across Cole's past 21 in Game 1 of a new series.

In this series, the Astros are 5-1 in the past six starts by Cole against the A's. Oakland has also dropped four in a row in Houston, while winning just 15 of the past 53 against the Astros overall. As such, the A's are probably left saying, "Houston, we have a..." Yeah, nevermind.

Looking Ahead

Monday, July 22

The Cardinals wheel out RHP Daniel Ponce De Leon against Pirates RHP Trevor Williams, who was pushed back a couple of days due to illness. St. Louis definitely doesn't have a case of the Mondays, as they have won six in a row on the day. They're also 4-1 in the past five overall, 4-1 in the past five vs. RHP and 4-1 in Ponce De Leon's past five outings, too. For the Bucs, they're 10-4 in the past 14 home outings, but they have won just twice in the past nine contests. They are 10-2 in the past 12 at home vs. RHP, and 6-1 in the past seven starts by Williams.

It's a battle of lefties at Target Field when LHP CC Sabathia toes the slab against LHP Martin Perez in a key American League series opener. The Yankees have won seven of the past 10 on the road, and they're 8-3 in the past 11 vs. LHP. While they're 9-4 in Sabathia's past 13 on a grass surface, New York is 1-5 in the past six road outings by CC, and 0-4 in his past four on the road against winning teams. The Twins are 0-4 in the past four vs. LHP, and 1-4 in the past five at home against southpaws. The Twins have also won just two of the past seven overall, and they're 2-6 in the past eight following a victory. In this series, the Yankees are 12-2 in CC's past 14 against the Twins, and 7-0 in his past seven starts at Target Field. The Yankees have won 27 of the past 37 trips to the Twin Cities, too.

Weather Report
There is a 40 percent chance of showers for the Rockies-Nationals series opener, picking up as the evening progresses. A day-night doubleheader on Tuesday might be needed. If they do get this one in, the winds will be blowing 10-13 mph out to the right-center field power alley.

On the south side of Chicago, the Marlins and White Sox will face a jetsteam of 12-15 mph out to right field. Other than that, the weather looks good across MLB.

Tuesday, July 23

RHPs Domingo German and Kyle Gibson lock horns in Game 2 of the series at Target Field. The Yankees have won seven of the past nine road outings by German, and 18 of his past 24 starts overall. The Yankees are also an impressive 42-14 in the past 56 against right-handed starters (.750 winning percentage), while going 5-0 in German's past five against winning teams. The Twins are 47-21 in the past 68 at home vs. RHP, and 4-1 in Gibson's past five starts overall. They're also 6-2 in Gibson's past eight at home. However, Minnesota is 0-7 in Gibson's past seven tries against the Bronx Bombers, and 0-5 in his past five starts at home. The over is also 7-2 in Gibson's past nine against New York, and 4-1 in his past five home outings against the Yanks.

The Royals and Braves start an interleague series at SunTrust Park on Tuesday, and LHP Danny Duffy will work against LHP Dallas Keuchel. The Royals have won five of the past seven overall, but they're just 1-4 in the past five against the NL East. They're also 6-18 in Duffy's past 24 against winning teams, and 0-5 in his past five working on five days of rest. The Braves are 9-2 in the past 11 vs. LHP, while going 4-1 in their past five at home against southpaws. They're also 16-6 in the past 22 at home.

The Angels and Dodgers kick off the latest installment of the Freeway Series, this time in Chavez Ravine. RHP Felix Pena goes for the Halos, while RHP Kenta Maeda works for Dodger Blue. The Angels have won seven of the past 10 games overall, and five of their past seven interleague battles. However, they're just 2-6 in the past eight interleague games on the road, while going 1-4 in Pena's past five tries on the road. The Dodgers have won 40 of their past 52 games at home, and they're 27-8 in the past 35 games against winning teams. They have also won six of Maeda's past eight home outings while going 6-1 in his past seven against winning teams. The under is 7-1 in the past eight meetings, while going 5-1 in the past six battles in L.A. The Angels have won just three of their past 11 trips to Dodger Stadium, too.

Weather Report
There is only one trouble spot as far as the elements. The Cubs and Giants will see a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field, but there is no precipitation in the forecast across all MLB venues.

Hot & Not Report - Umpires
July 22, 2019
By VI News

Who's Hot and Who's Not

Week of July 22nd

Now that we are in the final full week of July, it's time to re-visit those MLB umpire trends again as we have the past two months. Another 30 or so days of data is always beneficial to be aware of as you go through the daily grind of handicapping the MLB board, and even in today's ?juiced ball? era, of the 81 umpires that have been behind the dish at least 10 times this year, 45 of them have seen at least 50% of their games stay 'under' the respective total ? ignoring the 50%'s there are 36 umps who've had more 'overs' than 'unders' and 33 umps who have more 'unders' than 'overs'.

But these pieces the past two months are more about the guys who are on the extreme ends of that spectrum (70% or more) and as expected, these lists continue to get shorter and shorter with each passing month. By the time the end of the regular season rolls around, most umps will probably fall somewhere between the 35% and 65% range when looking at either 'over' or 'under' percentages. That notion would suggest ? as would the fact that these lists of 70% of greater do get shorter ? that's it's probably better to look the other way when you find these guys behind the dish during the coming weeks, as actual totals and betting percentages from the market tend to take these things at face value and blindly follow 'under' umps to 'unders' and vice-versa.

So here is this month's list of guys to keep an eye on no matter how you decide to play it. With all the discussion of ?juiced balls? and half the league on pace to set franchise records in HR's hit, totals continue to climb and implicit value in 'unders' might never be higher. Just another thing to consider.

Who's Hot ? 70% or better to the 'Over' umpires

Alan Porter (13-3 O/U)
Jeff Kellogg (11-3 O/U)
Alfonso Marquez (12-4 O/U)
Carlos Torres (12-5 O/U)
Brian Knight (7-3 O/U)

This list is one name shorter compared to last month's list, and going from six guys down to five is significant. It's not the same five guys from a month ago as Mike Winters, Chad Whitson, and Tom Hallion have all seemingly expanded their strike zones a bit to drop down from the 70% club, as Whitson made the biggest move, going from 10-4 O/U in late June to 11-8 O/U now. That's a great example of what I was referring to earlier in that guys tend to regress to the mean as the year goes on, and with numbers potentially being a shade or two higher when these guys are umping ? oddsmakers know this data as well ? in a general sense it can pay to go the other way.

Yet, at the same time, the three holdovers from June's list ? Alan Porter, Jeff Kellogg, and Carlos Torres have yet to regress much at all. However, all three of them haven't had nearly as many chances behind the plate in that time, as Porter's 1-1 O/U since last month, Kellogg is 1-0 O/U and Torres is 2-1 O/U. Not exactly a huge edge either way there, and there is even an argument to be made that a possible regression is coming for at least one of them.

Who's Not ? 70% of better to the 'Under' umpires

Jerry Meals (4-13 O/U)
Andy Fletcher (4-11 O/U)
Joe West (5-13 O/U)
Kerwin Danley (4-10 O/U)
Gary Cederstrom (5-12 O/U)

This list has expanded in volume by one name since June's breakdown, as both Kerwin Danley and Gary Cederstrom are new additions to this side of the ledger. Danley is 0-2-1 O/U in three games behind the dish since the week of June 24th, while Cederstrom's a perfect 0-4 O/U in that same span. The latter actually sees more runs per game (8.1) then Danley does (7.4), but both totals are so low relative to the totals we see on a daily basis in the market that you can understand how they've done well to the 'under' during the past four weeks.

Meals, Fletcher and ?Cowboy? Joe West continue to be guys that are very pitcher friendly and aren't scared to have a floating strike zone out there at times. But just like the holdovers from the 'over' list, these guys have relatively stayed at the mean during the past month, with all three of them going 2-2 O/U during the past month of action. Again, that's a great example of how some totals can be skewed a slice to one side or the other based on an umpire's season-long stats, but the further you get in a year it tends to come back towards the 50% mark. The two 'overs' that Fletcher had saw 13 and 16 runs scored respectively and he still only sees 7.7 runs per game on average. Early season numbers can skew things to such a degree that the context of a situation gets conveniently ignored.

As these next few weeks roll by, I would expect that August's update sees these lists either stay the same in terms of volume or shrink even further. There will still be situations where following these guys (taking 'unders' with the 'under' umps etc), there is likely more inherent value in looking the other way the further we get in the season.

LEADING OFF: Skaggs' funeral, White Sox debut full netting
July 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

PAYING RESPECTS

Ryan Braun will miss Milwaukee's home game against the Cincinnati Reds to attend the funeral of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who was found dead in a Texas hotel room on July 1. Braun and Skaggs were workout buddies. Mike Trout and the Angels have an off day between road series at Seattle and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

NET GAINS

The Chicago White Sox are set to become the first team to have protective netting in place entirely from foul pole to foul pole when they host Miami. Washington also has extended its netting in midseason - nearly as far as the White Sox.

The new netting at Guaranteed Rate Field and Nationals Park will debut a day after another fan was injured by a foul ball. Cleveland star Francisco Lindor said he was told his liner at Progressive Field sent a 3-year-old boy to the hospital.

Several fans, some of them young children, have been hurt all around the majors this season by foul balls. Some teams have added extra netting as a result.

REMEMBER ME?

Adam Jones will see plenty of former teammates when the Diamondbacks host Baltimore. Jones spent 11 years in the Orioles' outfield before signing with Arizona in spring training. Jones, who turns 34 on Aug. 1, is hitting .267 with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs.

EYES ON OCTOBER

It's a matchup of American League division leaders and a potential playoff preview when the Yankees visit Minnesota. One day after turning 39, left-hander CC Sabathia (5-4) starts for New York against Martin Perez (8-3). After a 7-3 homestand, the Yankees (64-34) have a nine-game cushion in the AL East over Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, the Twins (60-38) are three up on Cleveland in the AL Central.

HOW THE WEST IS WON

Michael Brantley and the AL West-leading Astros seek their sixth consecutive victory when they host second-place Oakland, which has won eight of 10. All-Star Gerrit Cole (10-5, 3.12 ERA) gets the ball for the Astros, who are 6+ games ahead of the Athletics. Cole struck out 11 and allowed one run in seven innings last time out against the Angels. Homer Bailey (8-6, 4.69) makes his second start for Oakland since coming over in a July 14 trade with the Royals. He beat Seattle in his A's debut last Wednesday.

STATUS REPORT

Twins center fielder Byron Buxton could come off the seven-day concussion list and play against the Yankees. He worked out at Target Field on Sunday and was eligible to be activated, but stayed on the injured list. ... Brewers All-Star pitcher Brandon Woodruff exited his start Sunday at Arizona with a strained left oblique and is headed to the injured list. The right-hander is 11-3 with a 3.75 ERA.

Garver hits 2 of Twins' 5 home runs in 8-6 win over Yankees
July 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Mitch Garver hit two of Minnesota's five home runs, and the Twins held on for an 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees after a tone-setting triple play in the first inning of a series opener between AL division leaders Monday night.

Jorge Polanco, Nelson Cruz and Max Kepler also went deep, giving the Twins their eighth game with five or more homers this season. All but Garver's second solo shot came off starter CC Sabathia (5-5), who lasted only four innings.

Martin Perez was hit just as hard, serving up home runs to Gio Urshela, Luke Voit, and AL batting leader DJ LeMahieu, a two-run drive.

Nine of the last 13 batters against Perez reached, with 14 total bases, and he left after failing to get an out in the fifth. LeMahieu went 3 for 4 to raise his batting average to .338, and the Yankees hit multiple homers for the 20th time in 29 games.

Rookie Lewis Thorpe (1-1) got his first major league win by working 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Taylor Rogers earned his 15th save.

The Twins had lost four of their first six games on this homestand.

RED SOX 9, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - J.D. Martinez homered and drove in four runs, including an RBI double in the ninth inning following Tampa Bay's curious decision to put a position player on the mound, and Boston beat the Rays.

Eduardo Rodriguez (12-4) allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings to win his sixth straight decision. He limited the sputtering Rays to a pair of infield singles and four walks before being replaced by Nathan Eovaldi.

Eovaldi labored through two-thirds of an inning, yielding three run-scoring hits and allowing the Rays to cut the lead to five runs.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash sent out rookie infielder Mike Brosseau to pitch the ninth. Brosseau, who started the game at second base, allowed doubles to Xander Bogaerts and Martinez. He was the fifth player to pitch for the Rays in the game..

Martinez, Andrew Benintendi and Sam Travis homered in the third inning, when the Red Sox scored seven runs against former Boston prospect Jalen Beeks (5-1).

Tampa Bay has dropped six of seven.

INDIANS 7, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Mike Clevinger pitched seven innings to win his third straight decision, Oscar Mercado homered and tripled, and Cleveland beat Toronto to improve to 13-3 in July.

Francisco Lindor drove in a pair of runs and Jason Kipnis had two hits and scored twice for the Indians, who are a major league-best 29-11 since June 4.

Clevinger (4-2) allowed three runs and five hits. He walked two and struck out seven. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four July starts.

Tyler Clippard finished with two perfect innings. Kipnis ended the game with a spectacular leaping catch at second base on Cavan Biggio's liner into shallow right field.

Making his first start of the season after being sidelined with a sore elbow, Blue Jays left-hander Ryan Borucki (0-1) allowed four runs, two earned, and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three.

ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings and Aledmys Diaz, Yordan Alvarez and Yuli Gurriel homered as Houston jumped on Homer Bailey for nine runs early and sailed to a win over Oakland.

Cole (11-5) yielded two hits and one run while striking out 11 to help Houston to its sixth straight win. Cole has won seven straight decisions, with his last loss coming on May 22.

Bailey (8-7), who was acquired from Kansas City on July 14, allowed a season-high nine runs and tied a season high with eight hits in just two-plus innings. It was the first loss since June 1 for the veteran right-hander, who had won four straight decisions capped by Wednesday's win against Seattle in his debut for the Athletics.

Alvarez doubled in a run off Brian Schlitter with two outs in the inning to give him 35 RBIs, which is the most in major league history by a player in his first 30 games, surpassing the 34 Albert Pujols had in 2001.

Matt Chapman doubled for Oakland's first hit with one out in the fourth and the Athletics made it 11-1 when he scored on a two-out double by Mark Canha.

Those were the only two hits as the Athletics ended a streak of 21 straight games with a home run.

CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 5, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit his fifth career grand slam in the top of the 10th and right fielder Jose Martinez threw out the tying run at the plate to help St. Louis beat Pittsburgh.

Goldschmidt took an offering from Clay Holmes (1-1) and sent it to the concourse that runs behind the wall in right-center field as the streaking Cardinals improved to 8-3 since the All-Star break. Goldschmidt's 19th home run of the season was just enough after St. Louis closer Carlos Martinez nearly let a four-run cushion get away.

Matt Wieters hit his eighth home run for the Cardinals and added a sacrifice fly. Chasen Shreve (1-0) picked up the victory by escaping a two-on, two-out jam in the ninth.

Starling Marte had three hits for Pittsburgh. Bell, Colin Moran and Bryan Reynolds all drove in runs but the Pirates left 11 runners on base to fall to 2-8 since a 12-5 surge pulled them within 2+ games of first in the NL Central at the break.

WHITE SOX 9, MARLINS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched a four-hitter that led Chicago over Miami.

Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer and Yoan Moncada added a three-run shot, and James McCann and Ryan Goins later connected for back-to-back drives.

Chicago opened a 10-game homestand by winning for the third time in 11 tries. The Marlins fell to 0-4 on their current six-game road trip.

The White Sox became the first team in the majors to have protective netting in place from foul pole to foul pole, extending the safety measure for their first game at Guaranteed Rate Field since the All-Star break.

Nova (5-9) improved to 5-0 lifetime against the Marlins, striking out five with no walks. This was his fourth career shutout - his previous one came with Pittsburgh on April 29, 2017, against the Marlins.

Jorge Alfaro homered in the second inning for the lone Miami run.

Trevor Richards (3-12) allowed seven runs over five innings in his seventh consecutive loss. He walked one and struck out seven.
