LEADING OFF: Home run streaks, Bochy's goodbye in San Diego
July 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

DRIVE FOR FIVE

Four days in a row, a player has hit three home runs. Who can make it five? AL MVP Mookie Betts had his fifth career three-homer game - one shy of the big league record - in Boston's 10-5 victory Friday night over the rival Yankees. Betts followed Mets second baseman Robinson Cano on Tuesday night, Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong on Wednesday and Minnesota slugger Nelson Cruz on Thursday. Before this stretch, there had never even been three consecutive days with a three-homer game in the majors. ''It's crazy just to see it once,'' Betts said. ''But I guess to see it four straight days, there's a lot of good hitters out there, and they're showing it.''

HALF A DOZEN

A pair of big boppers will try to go deep for the sixth consecutive game.

Paul Goldschmidt has homered in a career-best five straight to help the streaking Cardinals take over sole possession of first place in the NL Central for the first time since May 7. He'll face Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole (11-5, 3.03 ERA), who leads the majors with 205 strikeouts and is 6-0 with a 1.94 ERA since June 1. Goldschmidt's five-game run is one short of the club record shared by Matt Carpenter and Mark McGwire.

''It's the year of the homer, so it shouldn't surprise me,'' Houston manager AJ Hinch said.

Nelson Cruz has connected seven times during his five-game homer streak for the Twins, who became the fastest team to 200 homers in major league history as they beat the Chicago White Sox 6-2 on Friday night. Max Kepler hit a three-run drive for the milestone homer in Minnesota's 103rd game of the season. The previous mark was 122 games by the 2005 Texas Rangers.

FINAL PORT CALL

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is making his last scheduled trip to San Diego this weekend before retiring at the end of the season, his 13th with San Francisco and 25th overall in the big leagues. He managed the Padres for 12 seasons before jumping to the Giants and winning three World Series titles between 2010 and 2014.

''There's no question the last day driving here it's going to be a drive down memory lane,'' Bochy said.

The Padres honored Bochy with a pregame ceremony Friday night, showing a video montage of his years playing with and managing the team. He was presented with a huge bottle of wine and some saltwater fishing rods. Then the surging Giants went out and won 2-1 on Pablo Sandoval's home run in the 11th inning for their 18th victory in 22 games.

ACHING ARMS

Jon Lester (9-6, 3.87 ERA) makes his 400th major league start when the Chicago Cubs play at Milwaukee in a matchup of NL Central contenders. Meanwhile, the Brewers just hope Chase Anderson (5-2, 3.90) can get through his outing unharmed after a string of starters were injured lately. Gio Gonzalez left in the seventh inning Friday night when his shoulder tightened up. That came after All-Star Brandon Woodruff went on the injured list Monday with a strained left oblique and Jhoulys Chacin was placed on the injured list Thursday with a strained lat. Gonzalez was making his second start since spending six weeks on the IL with left arm fatigue. ''I think I'll be all right,'' he said. Milwaukee has not ruled out Gonzalez for his next scheduled start.

WELCOME BACK

For the first time in two years, Yasmany Tomas is earning his big salary in the big leagues. The 28-year-old outfielder was brought back from the minors by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday and grounded out as a pinch hitter in a 3-2 loss to Miami.

''I never lost hope. I always knew my destiny was to play in the major leagues,'' Tomas said in Spanish.

Tomas was sent outright to Triple-A Reno in April 2018, with Arizona responsible for the $42.5 million owed over the remaining three seasons of a $68.5 million, six-year contract he signed after defecting from Cuba. He was batting .305 with 29 home runs and 80 RBIs for the Aces this year.

''He's been working hard to make this day happen,'' Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. ''It's a deserving call.''

Tomas has a $15.5 million salary this year and is due $17 million in 2020.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (11-5, 3.03 ERA, $-6):
Cole is among the hottest hurlers in baseball at the moment. Since the start of June, Cole is 6-0 in ten starts with a 1.94 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 93 strikeouts through 65 innings of work. Over his last two starts he's allowed a pair of runs while striking out 22 batters in 14 innings of work.

Even though Houston is 13-3 in his last 16 starts, Cole isn't a great money pitcher, in large part because the Astros are usually huge favorites when he takes to the mound. Case in point: tonight the 'Stros are -200 faves on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, if you look into prop bets you can still maximize your profit margins. Cole's O/U on his strikeouts total is set at 9.5 with the Over paying +115 at BetAmerica while backing Cole to record a win is -103 at PointsBet.

SLUMPING

Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (7-10, 4.25 ERA, $-578):
The Phillies are just 2-7 in Eflin's last nine starts and the right-hander is a big reason why. Over his previous five starts Eflin is 1-3 with an ERA of 9.38 and a WHIP of 1.88.

Eflin and the Phillies are small +108 underdogs at home against the Braves today. In his previous start against the Braves on July 4 he gave up two dingers and six earned runs in three innings.

3 STRIKES

POOR PITCHING FROM PEREZ

Minnesota's Martin Perez started the year off with a 7-1 record and a sparkling 2.95 ERA but it's been all downhill from there. In six of his last nine starts he's allowed four or more earned runs. During that span the Twins are 4-5 and Perez has an ugly 6.13 ERA.

Today, Perez and the Twins are taking on the Chicago White Sox and starter Ivan Nova who is 5-9 with a 5.49 ERA and a BAA of .310. With the Twins batting .280 on the road while plating 6.14 runs per game, the Over 9.5 is worth a look.

AN EASY SCHEDULE

The Cleveland Indians look like one of the hottest teams in the majors right now, going 22-7 in their last 29 games. But if you look below the surface they might not actually be that good. Over that span they are 19-5 against the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. That's right, a whopping 24 of those 29 games came against the four-worst teams in the AL.

Luckily for the Tribe they still have two games left in a three-game series against the Royals and are -235 favorites tonight. But after this series it might be time to fade them. Starting on July 30 their next 20 games will include 14 contests against the Yankees, Astros, Twins and Red Sox, with their easiest six games versus the Rangers and Angels who are both above .500.

SAN FRAN STILL STREAKING

The Giants continue to cruise right along and, after their overtime win last night in San Diego, are 18-4 over their last 22 games - including 10-1 over their previous 11 games on the road. Nonetheless, the Giants are +113 underdogs tonight against the Padres who are 0-8 in their last eight games at home.

The Giants will Shaun Anderson on the mound and they are 5-0 in his previous five starts. The Friars will give the ball to Cal Quantrill and they are 0-5 in his last five starts at home. With the Giants 6-0 in the last six meetings between these two sides, all trends are pointing towards backing the road 'dogs tonight.

Red Sox pound Yankees -- again
July 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) J.D. Martinez and Andrew Benintendi homered as the Boston Red Sox again hit balls all over and out of Fenway Park, battering the New York Yankees 9-5 Saturday.

The Red Sox have outscored the Yankees 38-13 to win the first three of a four-game set. This was the sixth straight game Boston has scored eight or more runs against the Yankees, the first time in the clubs' 117-year rivalry.

Benintendi had three hits and scored three times, and Rafael Devers added three hits and scored twice for the Boston.

Gio Urshela went 4 for 4 with a solo homer and RBI single for New York. The Yankees have lost three straight for the first time since June 11-14.

CC Sabathia (5-6) fared only slightly better than the previous six games by a New York starter (with him included Monday), giving up five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. In his last outing, the 39-year-old was tagged for seven runs in four innings.

Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4) labored through 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, seven hits, striking out five and walking three.

DODGERS 9, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rookie catcher Will Smith homered and drove in six runs, leading Clayton Kershaw and Los Angeles over Washington.

Playing in his 10th major league game, Smith homered in the third inning, hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, doubled home a run in the sixth, and broke the game open in the seventh with a bases-loaded double off the wall in left-center.

Kershaw (9-2) allowed two first-inning runs and gave up three hits while striking out nine with three walks through the sixth.

Yan Gomes homered for Washington, which has lost three straight.

The Nationals employed an opener for the first time, with left-hander Matt Grace retiring all six Dodgers he faced. Right-hander Joe Ross (0-3) allowed a homer to the first batter he faced and gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 10, RAYS 9, 12 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Teoscar Hernandez led off the 12th inning with a home run and the Toronto completed a comeback from a seven-run deficit to beat Tampa Bay.

Hernandez connected off Emilio Pagan (2-2) for his second solo homer of the game. Hernandez also went back-to-back with Brandon Drury in the eighth.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning and Drury tied it with a two-out, solo drive as the Blue Jays overcame a 9-2 deficit.

Daniel Hudson (6-2) worked one inning for the win.

Cavan Biggio also hit a solo home run as the Blue Jays snapped a five-game streak in which they'd failed to score more than three runs.

Travis d'Arnaud and Willy Adames each hit three-run home runs in a six-run second but the Rays couldn't hold on.

MARINERS 8, TIGERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Ryan Court drove in three runs in his first big league start, rookie Austin Nola also had three RBIs and Seattle beat Detroit.

Nola hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning and the 31-year-old Court had an RBI single for his first hit.

Nola added an RBI double in the four-run seventh inning and Court matched him with a two-run, ground-rule double to make it 8-1.

Omar Narvaez had four hits for Seattle and Tim Beckham doubled twice, singled and scored two runs.

Marco Gonzales (12-8) scattered six hits over seven innings.

Tigers starter Tyler Alexander (0-1) struck out nine but only made it through 4 1/3 innings after giving up eight hits and four runs.

BRAVES 15, PHILLIES 7

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a grand slam, Ronald Acuna Jr., Ender Inciarte and Adam Duvall also homered and Atlanta routed Philadelphia.

The Braves pounded struggling righty Zach Eflin (7-11) for 10 runs in less than three innings.

Max Fried (11-4) allowed four earned and seven hits, striking out six in 5 1/3 innings in his first start since returning from the injury list because of a blister on his left index finger.

The NL East-leading Braves have won two in a row after losing six of eight. They have a 6 +-game lead over Washington.

J.T. Realmuto and Sean Rodriguez hit two-run homers for the Phillies, who fell 7 + games behind Atlanta but remain in the mix in the wild-card race.

Eflin gave up six earned and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Nick Ahmed hit a grand slam and an RBI double in leading Arizona past Miami.

Ahmed's homer off starter Jordan Yamamoto highlighted a six-run fourth inning. Eduardo Escobar drove in a run with a single and David Peralta had an RBI groundout.

Alex Young (4-0) allowed two runs and eight hits in six-plus innings. The rookie left-hander struck out two and walked one.

Yamamoto (4-2) retired the first nine Arizona batters before walking Jarrod Dyson and Ketel Marte to start the fourth. He also walked Jake Lamb and hit Christian Walker in the inning.

Jake Lamb hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks. Miguel Rojas homered for the Marlins.

REDS 3, ROCKIES 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer, Josh VanMeter added a solo shot, and Cincinnati beat Colorado.

Anthony DeSclafani and three relief pitchers teamed up to limit the Rockies to five hits. Wandy Peralta, Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias combined to face the minimum 12 batters over the final four innings. Iglesias earned his 18th save.

DeSclafani (6-5) left after giving up two hits to start the sixth. He allowed four hits and one run with three walks and five strikeouts.

Travis Story reached on an infield single, moved to second on a balk, went to third on a groundout and scored the only run allowed by DeSclafani on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Arenado in the fourth.

Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-3) lasted 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs with two walks and three strikeouts. He also hit a batter.

METS 3, PIRATES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Steven Matz threw an efficient five-hitter for his first complete game in 90 major league starts, and New York got home runs from Michael Conforto and J.D. Davis in a win over struggling Pittsburgh.

Matz (6-6) struck out seven and walked none, needing just 99 pitches to earn his first win since June 8 against Colorado.

Pirates starter Trevor Williams (3-4) held the Mets hitless until Davis doubled off the right center wall with two outs in the fifth. Conforto sent a changeup into the second deck in right field for a solo shot in the sixth. Davis added a two-run drive to center in the seventh.

ASTROS 8, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carlos Correa hit his first career grand slam and Houston withstood yet another home run by Paul Goldschmidt in beating St. Louis.

Goldschmidt homered in his sixth straight game, tying a Cardinals record with Matt Carpenter and Mark McGwire. St. Louis had won six in a row before this loss in an interleague matchup of division leaders. Goldschmidt's 24th homer was a solo drive in the fourth.

Gerrit Cole (12-3) improved to 7-0 with a 1.87 ERA since June 1. He struck out seven, raising his major league-leading total to 212, and allowed four hits in seven innings.

Ponce de Leon (1-1) went 2 1/3 innings, his shortest career start and the third straight in which he failed to last past the fourth inning. He walked four and struck out none.

INDIANS 9, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit a grand slam in the first inning, and Cleveland's Mike Clevinger struck out seven and remained perfect against Kansas City.

Clevinger (5-2) allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings and didn't walk a batter. With the victory, Clevinger improved to 8-0 all-time against the Royals.

Royals starter Glenn Sparkman (3-7) allowed eight runs on nine hits in five innings in front of a crowd of 31,181 at Kauffman Stadium, the second-largest home crowd after the season opener. All eight runs allowed by Sparkman came on Cleveland homers.

Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez also homered for Cleveland.

Kansas City scored a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Whit Merrifield.

WHITE SOX 5, TWINS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Yoan Moncada homered, Ivan Nova threw two-hit ball through six innings and Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota.

Moncada finished with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Adam Engel also had two RBIs for Chicago, which had dropped 12 of 15. The White Sox had been outscored 23-6 during the four-game losing streak.

Nova (6-9) allowed one unearned run on two hits in six innings and won his second straight start.

Evan Marshall got four outs, Aaron Bummer retired two and closer Alex Colome got the final three outs for his 22nd save in 23 chances.

Minnesota starter Martin Perez (8-4) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings.

BREWERS 5, CUBS 3, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich and Keston Hiura hit home runs in the 10th inning off Chicago closer Craig Kimbrel and Milwaukee rallied for the win.

Yelich opened the 10th with his major league-leading 36th homer, tying it at 3. Pinch-hitter Tyler Saladino drew a walk from Kimbrel (0-2) and Hiura followed with his 11th homer and first career walk-off.

Albert Almora Jr. had put the Cubs up 3-2 when he opened the top of the 10th with his 11th homer, connecting against Freddy Peralta (5-3).

Jon Lester, making his 400th career start, allowed just four singles over seven scoreless innings.

Anthony Rizzo homered for the Cubs, a two-run shot in the third that was his 21st of the season.

PADRES 5, GIANTS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run home run one pitch after diving out of the way of a knockdown pitch in the fifth inning and San Diego snapped an eight-game home losing streak with a win over San Francisco.

The Padres have won four of 14 since the All-Star break.

Tatis hit the deck to avoid a high, tight pitch from rookie Shaun Anderson (3-3) and then drove a 1-2 slider an estimated 414 feet to center field, his 17th. Rookie right-hander Cal Quantrill was aboard on a leadoff walk.

Greg Garcia added a two-run single in the sixth. It brought in Wil Myers and rookie Luis Urias. Myers hit an RBI double in the fourth.

Quantrill (4-2) allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out four and walked four.

Anderson allowed four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings, struck out seven and walked two.

Bailey (9-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Liam Hendriks earned his ninth save.

2018: Patriots (-6.5) W27-20 vs Houston

Since 2003, Super Bowl losers are 3-13 vs spread in Week 1 the next season.

11) How odd is it that Buffalo?s first two games this season are both in the Meadowlands?

10) Stat of the day; New England Patriots lost five of their last six visits to Miami. During that time, Dolphins are 27-20 at home (22-19 vs everyone else).

9) Pac-12 is considering starting football games at noon ET to get better TV exposure.

Let that sink in; the Pac-12 (Pac stands for PACIFIC, as in ocean) is thinking of starting games at 9am or 10am local time; that means players would eat pre-game meals at 5am or 6am?

What geniuses thought this was a good idea?

8) Major league umpire Ted Barrett was once a sparring partner for both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Braves put OF Nick Markakis (broken wrist) on IL.
? Royals traded lefty P Jake Diekman to Oakland, for two minor leaguers.
? Dodgers put P Ross Stripling (biceps tendonitis) on IL.
? Mets put 1B/OF Dom Smith (foot) on the IL.

6) 30 years ago, Washington State football coach Mike Leach was an assistant coach at Iowa Wesleyan; for $12,000 a year, he was offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, equipment manager and video coordinator.

He also taught a business law class and was the school?s SID. His wife was the secretary in the football office.

5) This season is the first year they?re using major league baseballs at the AAA level; home runs are up 59% from last year in AAA games. Yes, the baseball is juiced.

4) This, from ESPN?s Steve Levy:

?Wynn/Encore employees are instructed to NOT say ?how are you?? to guests?

Ya know, just in case you lost a million in craps??

3) There have been 17 Super Bowls where one of the starting QB?s went to college in California; none of those QB?s went to USC. No Trojan QB has ever started a Super Bowl. Delaware Blue Hens have had two quarterbacks start a Super Bowl.

2) Bengals? WR AJ Green appears to have avoided a serious injury; he sprained his ankle at a practice in Dayton Saturday. The NFL requested the Bengals practice in Dayton as part of the league?s 100th anniversary. Bengal officials were leery of the field?s surface.

1) San Francisco Giants are the first MLB team in the live-ball era to win six extra-inning games in a 10-game span. If somehow they make the playoffs this year, they should fly Bruce Bochy right to Cooperstown before the Wild Card game to get inducted into the Hall of Fame, thats how good a manager he is.

LEADING OFF: Goldschmidt HR streak, Bosox rip, Romo to Twins
July 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

SWINGIN' FOR SEVEN

Cardinals star Paul Goldschmidt has homered in a career-best six straight games, tying the team record shared by Matt Carpenter and Mark McGwire. Goldschmidt will next face former Arizona teammate Wade Miley (8-4, 3.18 ERA) when St. Louis hosts Houston in an interleague matchup of division leaders.

The major league record for consecutive games with a home run is eight by Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle, 1993), Don Mattingly (Yankees, 1987) and Dale Long (Pittsburgh, 1956).

FENWAY FROLIC

Lefty ace Chris Sale and the hard-hitting Red Sox try for a home sweep of the rival Yankees in prime time. Boston has outscored the AL East-leading Yankees 38-13 to win the first three of a four-game set.

The Red Sox have scored eight or more runs in six straight games against New York, their best streak in the clubs' 117-year rivalry.

Domingo German (12-2, 4.03 ERA) pitches for the Yankees. Over the past seven games, New York's starters have given up 52 runs on 52 hits in 26 innings.

WHAT A RELIEF

The AL Central-leading Twins have acquired veteran reliever Sergio Romo in a trade with Miami, hoping to boost their beleaguered bullpen for the stretch. Minnesota got the 36-year-old Romo, minor league pitcher Chris Vallimont and a player to be named for minor league first baseman Lewin Diaz.

Romo planned to take an early-morning flight from South Florida to Chicago to join the Twins for their game against the White Sox. Minnesota then heads to Miami for a series.

Romo was 2-0 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 38 games this season. The right-hander comes with plenty of postseason experience - he has an 0.00 ERA in six World Series games, helping the San Francisco Giants win three championships.

The deadline for making trades to have players eligible for the postseason is Wednesday.

TRADE TARGETS?

Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner (5-7, 3.66 ERA) starts at San Diego. ... Mets lefty Jason Vargas (5-5, 3.96) faces Pittsburgh. The wily veteran allowed only one hit in six shutout innings vs. the Padres on Tuesday. ... Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd (6-8, 4.07 ERA) starts at Seattle.

Strasburg wins 7th straight start, Nats beat Dodgers 11-4
July 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Stephen Strasburg tossed seven masterful innings to win his seventh consecutive start, leading the Washington Nationals to an 11-4 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Brian Dozier and Juan Soto homered, while Anthony Rendon had three hits and four RBIs that helped the Nationals (56-49) prevent a three-game sweep by the top team in the majors.

Corey Seager hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off Nationals reliever Michael Blazek to help the Dodgers avoid their largest loss of the season.

Adam Eaton and Washington manager Dave Martinez were ejected in the first inning for arguing a called strike.

Strasburg (14-4) took over the major league lead in wins after striking out nine, walking none and limiting a potent Dodgers lineup to one run and two hits.

Walker Buehler (9-2) lost for the first time since May 18. He allowed seven runs (four earned) and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings on his 25th birthday.

YANKEES 9, RED SOX 6

BOSTON (AP) - Didi Gregorius and Austin Romine each hit a two-run homer off Chris Sale, and Domingo German struck out nine to help New York avoid a four-game sweep.

After trimming New York's lead in the AL East from 11 games to eight - winning the first three games of the series by a combined 38-13 - the Red Sox committed three errors to fall into third place, nine games behind the Yankees in the division.

German (13-2) took a no-hitter into the fourth and allowed four hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings.

Sale (5-10) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks, striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.

Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run homer in the fourth and two-run single in the ninth - his third hit of the game. Xander Bogaerts also had three hits.

METS 8, PIRATES 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer in a six-run first inning against Chris Archer, and New York matched its longest win streak of the season at four with a win over Pittsburgh.

Jason Vargas (6-5) won a third straight start, and the Mets completed a three-game sweep.

Given a 6-0 lead, Vargas allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Bryan Reynolds and Jose Osuna hit two-run homers, and Jacob Stallings hit a solo shot for the Pirates.

Edwin Diaz got his 23rd save in 27 chances.

Chris Archer (3-8) allowed five hits and four walks in five innings.

MARLINS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie outfielder Harold Ramirez homered, hit a line drive that scored the tiebreaking run and made consecutive catches against the fence to help Miami beat Arizona.

Miguel Rojas led off the first inning with a home run for the second game in a row, and Miami teammate Brian Anderson added his 14th homer. Five pitchers combined on a four-hitter for the Marlins.

Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray (9-7) allowed two earned runs in six innings. His streak of wins in four consecutive starts ended even though he struck out 11 and walked none.

Miami's Elieser Hernandez, making his first start since July 4, allowed one run in four innings. Jose Quijada (2-3) faced only six batters in two innings.

REDS 3, ROCKIES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tucker Barnhart hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning and Cincinnati beat Colorado.

Barnhart improved to 4 for 5 in two games since returning on Friday after missing 22 games with a right oblique strain. He drove in Josh VanMeter from second base with a grounder up the middle off Jake McGee (0-2).

Lucas Sims (2-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win. Amir Garrett and Michael Lorenzen each pitched an inning and Raisel Iglesias gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before getting Ian Desmond to ground out for his second save in two days and 19th of the season.

The Reds bullpen pitched a combined 8 1-3 scoreless innings while Cincinnati was winning the last two games of the three-game series.

RAYS 10, BLUE JAYS 9

TORONTO (AP) - Joey Wendle drove in the tiebreaking run with a bases-loaded groundout in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat Toronto.

Ji-Man Choi and Guillermo Heredia each hit two-run home runs and Willy Adames added a game-tying solo shot in the eighth for the Rays.

Chaz Roe (1-3) pitched one inning for the win, Oliver Drake got one out in the ninth and Diego Castillo finished for his eighth save in nine opportunities.

Righty Daniel Hudson (6-3) took the loss.

PHILLIES 9, BRAVES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam, three other Phillies went deep and Philadelphia avoided a three-game sweep against Atlanta.

Aaron Nola (9-2) cruised through six scoreless innings before faltering in the seventh. He left after surrendering seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins and Adam Haseley also homered for Philadelphia, which pulled within 6+ games of the NL-East leading Braves.

Ender Inciarte and Johan Camargo homered for Atlanta. Kevin Gausman (3-6) allowed six runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and a walk, falling to 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in four career starts against Philadelphia.

TWINS 11, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Miguel Sano hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning, and Minnesota pounded Dylan Covey and Chicago to strengthen its hold on the AL Central.

Jorge Polanco, Jonathan Schoop and Max Kepler also homered as Minnesota ran its major league-leading total to 205 home runs.

Covey (1-7) threw 14 pitches and failed to get an out in his 10th start of the season.

Kyle Gibson (10-4) struck out nine in six effective innings.

CUBS 11, BREWERS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Kyle Schwarber hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to power Chicago past Milwaukee, averting a three-game sweep.

Schwarber crushed a first-pitch slam deep into the second deck in right field off starter Zach Davies (8-4) with one out in the second inning for his 23rd home run of the season. The slugger took Davies deep again in the fourth with an opposite-field shot to make it 7-0.

Christian Yelich hit a run-scoring double in fifth, extending his hitting streak to 16 games.

Brad Brach (4-3) retired the only batter he faced for the victory.

ASTROS 6, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - George Springer led off the game with a home run, Jose Altuve and rookie Yordan Alvarez also connected and Houston beat St. Louis.

The Astros have won nine of 11.

Paul Goldschmidt's team record-tying streak of six straight games with a home run ended for St. Louis. He singled in five at-bats.

Dexter Fowler had a pinch-hit homer in the ninth for St. Louis, which lost for the third time in 11 games.

Wade Miley (9-4) gave up five hits in five shutout innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Dakota Hudson (10-5) gave up eight hits and five earned runs in four-plus innings.

ROYALS 9, INDIANS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer heaved the ball from just past the mound over the center field wall while being taken out of the game in a loss to Kansas City.

It was not clear whether Bauer was upset with his performance or that manager Terry Francona was pulling him. Bauer (9-8) had just allowed a two-run single to Nicky Lopez that gave the Royals a 7-5 lead with one out in the fifth inning.

Danny Duffy (5-5) picked up the win. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings.

In addition to Lopez's hit, Ryan O'Hearn, Cheslor Cuthbert and Meibrys Viloria also had RBIs.

ANGELS 5, ORIOLES 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Matt Thaiss hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth and Los Angeles avoided being swept by Baltimore.

Albert Pujols hit his 650th homer. Taylor Cole (1-1) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Trey Mancini and Jonathan Villar each drove in two runs, but the last-place Orioles could not complete their first four-game sweep in more than two years.

Mychal Givens (1-5) took the loss.

Pujols is the sixth major leaguer to hit 650 homers, and he needs 11 more to pass Willie Mays (660) for fifth place.

ATHLETICS 6, RANGERS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien homered and scored the game-winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth as Oakland beat Texas.

Texas led 5-4 in the ninth with Jose Leclerc (1-3) seeking his sixth save. His blown save was his third.

Leclerc walked Khris Davis with the bases loaded and one out after Matt Olson singled in Chris Hermann with the tying run.

Hermann singled leading off the ninth and Semien followed with a walk.

Danny Santana was 3 for 4 with a homer and a double for Texas. Nomar Mazara also went deep for the Rangers, winless in eight straight series.

Blake Treinen (4-3) worked a scoreless ninth for the win.

MARINERS 3, TIGERS 2, 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - J.P. Crawford hit a walkoff single with one out in the 10th inning and Seattle extended its winning streak to five games.

Dylan Moore led off the 10th inning with a double against Jose Cisnero (0-2).

Roenis Elias (4-2) picked up the victory for Seattle. Domingo Santana hit his 20th homer of the season.

Niko Goodrum hit his 10th home run of the season for Detroit.

GIANTS 7, PADRES 6

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Madison Bumgarner won his final start before the trade deadline and rookie Mike Yastrzemski had four hits, two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run to lead San Francisco over San Diego.

Bumgarner (6-7) allowed only four hits in seven innings, including a three-run homer by Hunter Renfroe two batters after he hit prized rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch, drawing the ire of Padres fans. MadBum struck out six and walked two.

Will Smith pitched the ninth for his 26th save, allowing Wil Myers' two-run homer, his 13th.

It was Giants manager Bruce Bochy's last game in San Diego. He's retiring at the end of this season, his 13th with the Giants. Before that, he managed the Padres for 12 seasons.

Renfroe drove in all four runs for San Diego, which has lost 11 of 15 games since the All-Star break.

Luis Perdomo (1-3) took the loss.

Monday?s 6-pack

3) Mets? OF Michael Conforto homered, then struck out in a 6-run first inning Sunday. Pirates? starter Chris Archer threw 48 pitches in the first inning.

Steven Matz threw a 98-pitch complete game against the Pirates Saturday.

2) When the Cincinnati Reds are playing at home and a close call goes their way, during the replay review, they play the Beatles? classic ?Let It Be? over the stadium PA system.

1) Over last week, Milwaukee?s Brian Anderson, Colorado?s Drew Goodman have spoken glowingly on TV about Reds? legendary broadcaster Marty Brennamen, who is retiring after this season.

Just good to hear people say nice things about a colleague; Brennaman replaced Al Michaels in the Reds? broadcast booth- his first game was in 1974, when Hank Aaron hit his 714th home run and tied Babe Ruth for the all-time record. Nice way to start a great broadcasting career.

LEADING OFF: Trade talks heat up, Nats host 1st-place Braves
July 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

TRADEWINDS

Only eight games on the schedule, giving contending teams more time to talk about trades. The fourth-place Mets acquired Toronto ace Marcus Stroman for two minor league pitching prospects Sunday and the Rays made three deals, getting .300-hitting Eric Sogard from the Blue Jays.

The Yankees are in the market for a top starting pitcher - Mets star Noah Syndergaard is available, and San Diego is interested. Relievers are always in demand, with Pittsburgh lefty Felipe Vazquez attracting attention.

The deadline is 4 p.m. EDT Wednesday to make trades for players to be eligible in the postseason.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Second-place Washington gets a chance to cut into Atlanta's 5+-game lead in the NL East when the Braves visit for the opener of a three-game series. Patrick Corbin (8-5, 3.25), ranked second in the majors with a 1.68 ERA at home, starts for the Nationals against Dallas Keuchel (3-3, 3.50) in a matchup of veteran left-handers. Atlanta star Ronald Acuna Jr. exited Sunday's loss in Philadelphia with a stiff neck but said afterward he was feeling better and expects to play Monday. Acuna has reached base safely in 32 consecutive games, the longest streak in the majors.

NO RUSH

White Sox manager Rick Renteria says he sees Eloy Jimenez as an outfielder, even after the rookie's latest setback.

Jimenez was activated from the 10-day injured list over the weekend. The slugger will be limited to designated hitter while he completes a throwing program after being sidelined with a bruised ulnar nerve in his right arm.

The 22-year-old Jimenez is batting .241 with 17 homers and 39 RBIs in 68 games. But his adventures in left field have raised questions about whether his long-term future might be at DH. He hurt his arm when he collided with teammate Charlie Tilson while chasing a flyball this month and missed time earlier this season when he sprained his ankle crashing into a wall.

AILING

The Dodgers are likely to put valuable utilityman Enrique Hernandez on the injured list because of an aching left wrist. ''He's still in pain. It's getting better, but the IL is probably inevitable,'' manager Dave Roberts said.

Ballpark Figures - Week 19
Joe Williams

National Security

The second-place Washington Nationals host the first-place Atlanta Braves in D.C., and the Nats enter play 5 1/2 games back in the National League East. The Braves roll out LHP Dallas Keuchel for his eight start with the team since joining the club in mid-June, while the Nats counter with LHP Patrick Corbin. The last time these teams met in Atlanta, the teams split a four-game set, while the Nats outscored the Braves 22-18. In the most recent series in the nation's capital, it was the Braves coming away with two of three, with Atlanta outscoring them 20-16. Washington holds a slim 5-4 series lead over Atlanta this season.

Keuchel has managed a 3-3 record, 3.50 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across his seven outings with the Braves. He made his team debut on June 21 agtainst the Nationals, and it was his shortest outing of the season. He coughed up four runs - three earned - and eights hits across five innings in a loss to Washington. He has lasted at least 5 2/3 innings in each of his six outings since. As far as Corbin is concerned, he has posted eight wins in the past 13 decisions while whiffing 151 batters over 130 1/3 innings in his 21 outings. Corbin is especially tough in his home park, posting a 5-1 record, 1.68 ERA and 0.88 WHIP at home.

The Braves are 5-1 across the past six on the road against a left-handed starting pitcher, and 24-11 in the past 35 games away from home. They're also 24-11 in the past 35 against National League East teams as well. Atlanta is 9-3 in the past 12 overall against lefties, too.

The Nationals have picked up 14 wins over the past 20 home outings, and they have a 19-7 record in the past 26 against NL East foes. The Nats have won five of the past seven against lefties, while posting a 9-2 record in the past 11 outings in Game 1 of a new series. The under is also 4-1 in Gray's past five starts, and 3-1-1 in his past five at home.

These teams split a four-game set in Denver from June 27-30, with the Dodgers outscoring the Rockies 34-31 in three games which hit the 'over'. Overall this season, the Rockies have dropped eight of the first 10 meetings with the Dodgers. The Dodgers have won just three of Maeda's past 10 road outings, and they're 0-4 in the past four road stats against a losing team. For the Rockies, they have won five of Gray's past six home outings, and they're 4-1 in his past five against winnings teams and 5-2 in the past seven against NL West foes.

The under has cashed in each of Gray's past seven home outings against the Dodgers, and 9-2 in his past 11 overall vs. L.A. The Rockies are 6-2 in Gray's past eight home starts agaisnt the Dodgers, while the Dodgers are 5-2 in his past seven road starts aginst the Rockies. Los Angeles has won 21 of the past 29 against Colorado, and the Dodgers are 6-2 in their past eight visits to Coors Field. The under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 starts by Maeda against the Rox.

Tuesday, July 30

RHP Charlie Morton takes the ball from manager Kevin Cash as the Rays open a set at Fenway Park against LHP David Price and the Red Sox. The Rays are 4-10 in the past 14 road outings against a team with a winning record, while going 1-4 in their past five vs. LHP and 1-5 in the past six overall against losing clubs. Morton has been a stopper for Tampa, as they're 4-1 in his past five overall, and 4-1 in the past five inside the division. The Red Sox have rattled off five victories in the past six home games, and they're 5-2 in the past seven against AL East teams. They're also 32-15 in Price's past 47 starts, while going 19-9 in his past 28 against teams with a winning overall mark.

The over has dominated for both sides lately, going 5-1-1 in Tampa's past seven vs. LHP, and 3-0-1 in their past four on the road against lefies. The over is also 4-1-2 in the past seven Game 1s of a new series. The over is 4-0 in Boston's past four at home, 5-1 in the past six at home vs. RHP and 6-0 in their past six at home against winning teams. The over is also 10-1 in Boston's past 11 following a loss. While that's well and good, the under is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in this series, 7-1 in the past eight at Fenway Park and a perfect 6-0 in Price's past six tries against his former organization, including 5-1 in his past six at home against the Rays.
