LEADING OFF: Deadline day drama for Minor, Bauer, others
July 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

ON THE BLOCK

With the trade deadline set for 4 p.m. ET, the hot stove is brimming with big arms that have long been mentioned in rumors. Madison Bumgarner, Noah Syndergaard, Trevor Bauer, Mike Minor, Zack Wheeler and Robbie Ray are the biggest names that might move, and that would provide a spark for what's otherwise been a quiet trade season, with Marcus Stroman's deal from Toronto to the Mets by far the biggest one completed. Of those pitchers, Minor is the only one set to start on deadline day, with the Rangers left-hander slated to face Seattle four hours after the deadline.

DEADLINE DRAMA

If Trevor Bauer is traded away from Cleveland, he'll leave with slightly lighter pockets. The right-hander was fined by Major League Baseball for heaving a ball from the pitcher's mound over the center field wall at Kansas City last weekend, a person familiar with the discipline told The Associated Press. An All-Star last year, Bauer made the toss in the fifth inning of Cleveland's 9-6 loss Sunday. When manager Terry Francona emerged from the dugout to make a pitching change, Bauer turned, took a couple steps and threw the ball over the 410-foot mark. Bauer apologized to the organization and his teammates. His name has been mentioned often in trade rumors, but no deal had emerged as of Tuesday night. Bauer is 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA in 24 starts.

TOUGH SELL

Blue Jays closer Ken Giles seemed likely to move before the deadline until he got a cortisone shot Tuesday in his right elbow to treat what the club called mild inflammation. Toronto head athletic trainer Nikki Huffman says an MRI showed no structural problems, and that the shot would provide Giles with ''a long-lasting effect.'' Giles won't resume throwing until after the 4 p.m. deadline, though, and it's unlikely a team would try to acquire the right-hander without a clearer picture of his health.

SNAKES-YANKS

The teams conclude their quick two-game series with a Wednesday matinee. RHP Zack Greinke (10-4, 2.87 ERA) pitches for the Diamondbacks against RHP Masahiro Tanaka (7-6, 4.79) in a matchup of 2019 All-Stars. Greinke went 7 2/3 innings to beat the Yankees 3-1 on April 30 in Arizona. Tanaka lasted only four innings the following day and lost 3-2. Tanaka was tagged for 12 runs on 12 hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of a 19-3 loss at Boston last Thursday. The only Yankees pitcher to give up more earned runs in a game was Carl Mays, who allowed 13 in a 1923 complete game against Cleveland.

SLIDING INTO FORM

After some early season struggles, Mets ace Jacob deGrom again looks the part of a reigning Cy Young Award winner. He's doing it differently, though. He threw his slider a career-high 58 times over seven scoreless innings against San Diego last week, averaging a stunning 91.8 mph with the pitch. He's used that pitch more and more over the past month, following a league-wide trend of increased breaking ball usage. He's gotten a lot of uncomfortable swings with the pitch, including one from Francisco Mejia last week that wobbled the rookie, buckled his left ankle and nearly caused him to fall over.

AP source: Indians deal Bauer to Reds in 3-team deal
July 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) Trevor Bauer's final act for the Indians was throwing a ball over the center-field wall.

Yasiel Puig ended his season with Cincinnati in another brawl.

Cleveland agreed to trade Bauer, the talented but taxing right-hander, to the Reds on Tuesday night for Puig in a three-team deal that also involves the San Diego Padres, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The Indians, who are trying to catch the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, also would get left-hander Scott Moss from Cincinnati and slugging outfielder Franmil Reyes, lefty Logan Allen and infielder Victor Nova from the Padres, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced.

San Diego would receive minor league outfielder Taylor Trammell from the Reds, the person said.

In his last start for the Indians on Sunday, Bauer, who is not eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season, threw a ball in frustration from the mound in Kansas City over the center-field wall. The moment seemed to push the Indians over the edge with the enigmatic 28-year-old, who has one of baseball's best arms but can be difficult.

Bauer was fined by Major League Baseball for his startling heave, a person familiar with the discipline told the AP. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the discipline was not announced.

Bauer exchanged hugs with several teammates in the clubhouse following Cleveland's 2-0 loss to Houston before he departed around 10:45 p.m. He declined to speak with reporters.

While the trade was still being completed, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis credited the team's front office for another bold move.

''That's the value in having that much starting pitching depth where you might be able to take a shot to fill in some other spots,'' Kipnis said. ''They knew that was our strong point and that'd probably give us the biggest return, our starting depth. So I'm guessing that's what's happened here.''

The Reds did not confirm the trade, but Puig said he's bound for Cleveland, where Indians executives Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff were being celebrated for not only getting rid of Bauer but adding young, quality players who can impact the playoff race.

''I'm going to miss all my teammates here,'' Puig said after the Reds lost 11-4 to Pittsburgh. ''This part of the year is amazing for me, being on this team and the city. Now it's time to move forward and go to my new team and help my team go to the playoffs. ... I want to say thank you to all the city, Cincinnati. We stay next door - we're going to Cleveland.''

Reds outfielder Jesse Winker was excited about Bauer coming aboard.

''Man, I can't wait. That's a legit ace, man,'' he said. ''We already had a legit pitching staff, it just got more legit. Welcome Trevor Bauer, to the cooler city of Ohio.''

A former All-Star, Puig is batting .252 with 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and 14 steals in 100 games with the Reds, who acquired him in December in a seven-player swap with the Dodgers.

The Cuban-born outfielder has a career .275 average with 130 homers and 391 RBIs in 812 games. He's eligible for free agency after the 2019 season.

Bauer is 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA in 24 starts this season, but he hasn't been as consistent as the Indians have needed while waiting for two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (broken arm) and Carlos Carrasco (leukemia) to return to their rotation. Bauer had angered the Indians during the offseason for comments he made after winning his arbitration case and pledging he would only sign one-year deals going forward.

Cleveland has been looking to add power to its lineup and Puig and Reyes will help.

However, Puig is facing a possible suspension after he was involved in another brawl with the Pirates just as the trade was coming together.

In the ninth inning, Reds reliever Amir Garrett rushed the Pirates' dugout and threw punches, starting a brawl prolonged by Puig. As he left the field for the final time, Puig was given a warm ovation from Reds fans. He was also at the center of a melee between the teams in April, when Puig seemed to be taking on the entire Pirates team by himself near home plate.

The 24-year-old Reyes hit .255 with 27 homers and 46 RBIs in 99 games with the Padres this season. In his last 29 games, the right-handed hitter is batting .290 with eight homers and 13 RBIs.

Give me a break: Japanese coach takes heat for resting ace
July 31, 2019
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) A decision by a high school baseball coach to rest his star pitcher in a crucial qualifying game for the prestigious national tournament has the Japanese sports fraternity up in arms.

The gamble ended in defeat, and the Ofunato High School was inundated with phone calls from people demanding an explanation.

It sparked harsh criticism of the coach but also a wider debate about the popular tournament's win-at-all-costs approach, with even Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish weighing in.

The debate has entered a second week. Ofunato manager Yohei Kokubo opted not to use ace pitcher Roki Sasaki in the final of the Iwate Prefecture qualifier on July 25. His team needed to win the game to seal a spot in the National High School Baseball Championship - commonly known as Koshien - which in Japan carries the same weight as March Madness, the NCAA Division 1 men's basketball tournament in the United States.

But with Sasaki on the bench, Ofunato lost 12-2 to Hanamaki Higashi High School.

Sasaki, an 18-year-old right-hander, had already thrown 435 pitches from July 16 to 24 and would have had to pitch the game against Hanamaki after throwing 129 pitches in the semifinals and 194 pitches over 12 innings three days before that.

Sasaki reportedly had some elbow discomfort, though the school has denied this. Kokudo said the reason for keeping Sasaki out was to prevent injury.

''I think Sasaki's manager showed a lot of courage,'' said Robert Whiting, who has written books on Japanese baseball. ''He could have won the national title with Sasaki if he had followed the usual pattern of throwing the team ace out there on consecutive days.''

Asked about the decision, Sasaki stoically said he wanted to pitch but the manager's decision was final.

An unapologetic Kokubo said he'd had the pitcher's well-being in mind.

''The reason was to prevent injury,'' Kokubo said.

Asked after the game whether winning was less important than Sasaki's future, Kokubo was defiant.

''That's certainly not the case,'' he said. ''Our goal is to win, regardless of whether Sasaki pitches or not.''

Japanese baseball great Isao Harimoto, known for his old-school views, described Kokubo's decision as hugely disappointing, saying young players need to face adversity to meet the harsh challenges of baseball.

Darvish, a former Japanese high school standout himself, disagreed.

''Those who say things like asking why (Sasaki) didn't pitch are not giving a single thought to the kids,'' Darvish told Japan's national news agency, Kyodo.

Kokubo's decision has been widely discussed on weekly news programs with numerous former professionals, current players and TV personalities all chiming in with analysis and opinions.

Sasaki has a fastball that has been clocked at 163 kph (101 mph) and hit 160 (99.4) during his 194-pitch outing. He's already drawing comparisons with players like Shohei Ohtani and Daisuke Matsuzaka, the former major leaguer who threw 250 pitches in 17 innings in the quarterfinals of the 1998 Summer high school baseball tournament, one day after a 148-pitch complete game shutout.

For those not familiar with the game, most teams in Major League Baseball stick to a general guideline of 100 pitches for starting pitchers in order to avoid the kind of strain that could lead to injury.

Matsuzaka, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011 while with the Boston Red Sox, is currently pitching for the Chunichi Dragons but has missed most of this season with an arm injury.

Sasaki has already been widely scouted by teams in MLB.

Marathon pitching outings on consecutive days have long been commonplace in Japanese high school baseball tournaments. Pitching a complete game, even those going into extra innings, is seen as an expression of the fighting spirit that dominates Japan's sports culture.

But times are changing, even in the tradition-bound world of Japanese high school baseball where players shave their heads, go through grueling practice sessions and adhere to strict codes of conduct.

Amateur baseball officials are considering the introduction of pitch limits aimed at preventing injuries to high school players.

The Japan high school federation has taken several other steps to protect players during the summer tournament which is played in sweltering heat. In 2000, it capped the number of extra innings to 15, down from 18. In 2013, it introduced a rest day after the quarterfinals.

Whether Kokubo's decision will lead to change is yet to be known.

''It's too early to tell whether this is a groundbreaking decision,'' Whiting said. ''Wait until the last few days of the Koshien tournament to see how many aces are rested. My guess is that the two pitchers in the final will have pitched three complete games in a row.''

Braves acquire reliever Chris Martin from Rangers
July 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The NL East-leading Atlanta Braves have gotten some bullpen help, acquiring hard-throwing reliever Chris Martin from the Texas Rangers for former first-round draft pick Kolby Allard.

Martin, whose fastball has averaged 96 mph this season, has 24 strikeouts and only one walk over his last 19 appearances since May 24 for his hometown Rangers. The 6-foot-8 Martin has four saves and a 3.08 ERA in 38 games this year, with 43 strikeouts and four walks in 38 innings.

''We felt he had as much upside as anybody on the trade market,'' Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Tuesday night after the deal was announced.

Allard, a 21-year-old lefty, was the 14th overall pick by the Braves in the 2015 amateur draft and signed for a $3,042,400 bonus. That was the same year that Dansby Swanson, now Atlanta's shortstop, was the first overall pick by Arizona before Houston used the second pick to get Alex Bregman, the All-Star third baseman for the Astros.

The Rangers were playing a home game against Seattle when the 33-year-old Martin was seen high-fiving teammates in the bullpen before leaving down the tunnel. Texas announced the trade a few minutes later.

Atlanta assumes the remaining $737,903 of Martin's $2.25 million salary. He has earned $100,000 in bonuses for 15 games finished, would get another $50,000 for 20, and $100,000 each for 25 and each additional five through 40.

Martin, who has only five career saves in 124 big league games, might get a chance to close in Atlanta. Luke Jackson has 17 saves but has struggled at times, failing to convert seven other chances.

Martin made his big league debut with the Colorado Rockies in 2014 and then pitched with the New York Yankees for part of the 2015 season. After two years in Japan, he signed with Texas before the 2018 season.

The Rangers optioned Allard to Triple-A Nashville. He was 7-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 20 starts this season for Triple-A Gwinnett.

''He's a young starter who already has significant experience at the upper levels,'' Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. ''His reputation as a competitor is well known, and we look forward to watching him compete as a Ranger for a long time to come.''

Allard was regarded as one of the Braves' top pitching prospects and got a call to the big leagues in 2018 at age 20. But after being rocked for a 12.38 ERA in three appearances, giving up 19 hits and three homers in eight innings, he spent all of this season at Triple-A.

Even as the team made numerous moves looking to bolster its shaky rotation, it was clear the lefty had dropped behind other pitchers in Atlanta's deep farm system.

The Braves could still be looking for more help, but Anthopoulos gave no indication of how close they may be to another deal.

''Any opportunity to do a good baseball trade that makes sense for us, regardless of who they are, we're going to look to do it,'' said Anthopoulos, who in the past has been reluctant to deal the team's top prospects.

He said the market is flush with available relievers, which is why he decided to followed that path rather than go after a starting pitcher. The Braves might have pursued an outfielder to replace the injured Nick Markakis, but Adam Duvall's strong start since being called up last week from Gwinnett made that less of a priority.

''If we saw the value that we saw in the relief market in the position player market or the starting position market, we would've gone down that path,'' Anthopoulos said.

Markakis is expected to be out until at least mid-September with a fractured wrist. But Duvall, a former All-Star who endured a dismal 2018 season, revitalized his career with 29 homers in Triple-A this season. He hit two more homers against the Nationals on Tuesday night, giving him three in four games since returning to Atlanta.

''I know it's a small sample,'' Anthopoulos said. ''But this is not a surprise. This is the player he was if you look at his career. The outlier was 2018.''

Astros (-130, 9 ?) at Indians ? 7:10 PM EST

Houston swept Cleveland out of the American League Division Series last season in three games as these two teams could meet again in the 2019 postseason. The Astros (69-39) grabbed the opener of a three-game series at Progressive Field on Tuesday, 2-0 behind another terrific effort from ace Justin Verlander, who struck out 13 batters in seven innings to pick up his 14th victory of the season.

Following last night?s win, the Astros improved to 10-2 the last 12 games, while ending a three-game skid in road series openers. In the past 10 victories, Houston has allowed three runs or fewer, while pitching its first shutout since July 6 in a 4-0 triumph over the Angels. The game finished UNDER the total of 8 ?, marking the ninth UNDER in the last 11 games for the AL West leaders.

The Indians (62-44) have dropped consecutive games for the first time since immediately after the All-Star break when Minnesota topped Cleveland twice at Progressive Field. In spite of Tuesday?s defeat, Cleveland owns a solid 12-4 record the last games to sit three games behind Minnesota in the AL Central after the Twins edged the Marlins last night.

Cleveland sends out right-hander Zach Plesac (5-3, 3.10 ERA) to the mound tonight as the Indians have won each of his past four starts. Plesac shut down the Royals in his previous trip to the mound last Friday in an 8-3 victory as a short road favorite. The former Ball State standout tossed seven innings and allowed one run as the Indians have compiled a 6-1 record in his past seven appearances since mid-June.

The Astros counter with another young arm in Jose Urquidy (1-0, 4.26 ERA), who has yielded one earned run in each of his past two starts. Urquidy shut down the Rangers on June 20 in a 6-1 home triumph by scattering two hits in seven innings, while striking out a season-high nine batters. However, the Astros couldn?t hold a 2-1 lead in his last appearance at St. Louis in a 5-3 defeat despite Urquidy allowing four hits in six innings of work.

Cubs (-110, 8 ?) at Cardinals ? 8:15 PM EST

Chicago and St. Louis have met a total of 10 times this season and the home team has yet to lose. The Cardinals (57-49) pulled into first place of the NL Central race by themselves after edging the Cubs (56-50) on Tuesday, 2-1. Paul Goldschmidt hit the tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning to give St. Louis the lead for good, while helping the Cardinals snap a two-game losing streak.

The Cubs have spun out of control lately by losing six of the last eight games, including all three series openers on their current road trip. In all three of those defeats, Chicago has lost by a run apiece, while blowing a lead in each of those losses. Following last night?s setback, the Cubs fell to 8-21 in their last 29 games away from Wrigley Field dating back to May 27.

Chicago will try to turn around its luck tonight with Kyle Hendricks (7-8, 3.26 ERA) on the mound, as the Cubs are winless in his past six starts. Hendricks hasn?t been bad in this stretch by allowing two runs or less in five straight outings, but the run support for the right-hander has not been strong with the Cubs scoring three runs or less during this 0-6 stretch. Hendricks dominated the Cardinals at Wrigley on June 9 in a 5-1 victory by tossing seven innings and giving up one run.

Miles Mikolas (7-10, 4.19 ERA) heads to the hill for the Cardinals, as the right-hander has posted a solid 2.15 ERA at Busch Stadium in 10 starts. Mikolas defeated the Pirates in his last start on July 25 in a 6-3 victory by giving up three earned runs in six innings of work. However, St. Louis hasn?t won consecutive starts made by Mikolas since early May as the Cardinals are 0-5 in his past five outings after a victory in his previous outing. The Cardinals are 1-1 in Mikolas? two starts against the Cubs this season as both games finished UNDER the total.

Brewers at Athletics (-120, 9) ? 10:05 PM EST

Sitting right behind the Cardinals and Cubs in the NL Central are the Brewers, who slipped to two games behind St. Louis for first place following Tuesday?s extra-innings loss to Oakland. The Athletics (61-47) edged the Brewers (56-52) in 10 innings, 3-2 as -125 favorites, as Milwaukee tied the game in the ninth inning thanks to a Eric Thames home run. Matt Olson walked it off for the A?s with a solo shot in the 10th to give Oakland its third consecutive win.

The Brewers slipped to 3-8 in interleague play after the loss, while falling to 2-6 away from Miller Park against American League foes. Jordan Lyles (5-7, 5.36 ERA) makes his Milwaukee debut after getting traded from Pittsburgh last week as the right-hander is winless in his past eight appearances. Lyles began the season on fire as the Pirates posted an 8-1 record in his first nine outings, but the hurler hasn?t won a start since May 23 against Colorado. Lyles allowed one earned run in 6.2 innings of a 5-3 triumph in 13 innings against Oakland back on May 5 at PNC Park.

The Athletics counter with Brett Anderson (9-6, 4.05 ERA), who was knocked around by the Rangers last Thursday by allowing five runs in 4.2 innings in an 11-3 defeat as a heavy -185 favorite. That loss snapped a four-game hot streak by Anderson, which included three road victories. Anderson has been shaky at home recently by giving up 18 earned runs in his last five starts at the Coliseum, while the A?s are 2-3 in this stretch.

Oakland has won 10 of its last 13 home contests, including three straight victories by one run apiece. Milwaukee has compiled a solid 6-2 mark in its last eight games against left-handed starting pitchers, but the Brewers are 1-8 in the past nine road Game 2?s of a series.

Donaldson homers in 10th, lifts Braves over Nationals 5-4
July 31, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Josh Donaldson homered against Sean Doolittle in the top of the 10th, and the Atlanta Braves pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday to take two of three in the series and pad their NL East lead to 6 1/2 games.

After the Nationals scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, Donaldson swatted a fastball from Doolittle over the center-field wall for his 25th homer of the season.

Adam Duvall homered for the fourth time in five games. Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies and Tyler Flowers also drove in runs for the Braves, who won consecutive series in Washington for the first time since 2013. They also won two of three in late June.

Atlanta got another quality road start from Mike Soroka (10-2), who pitched seven innings and allowed just three hits, including a leadoff homer to Juan Soto in the second.

Washington starter Anibal Sanchez (6-6) could not keep pace, allowing four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

YANKEES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Austin Romine hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning and New York beat Arizona while the Diamondbacks completed a deal to send ace Zack Greinke to Houston.

The Yankees had been shopping for pitching and may have eyed Greinke ahead of the 4 p.m. trade deadline. The veteran right-hander gave them an impressive firsthand look, striking out seven and pitching five innings of two-run ball. He was in line for the win before Romine's shot off Yoshihisa Hirano (3-5).

Instead, the 35-year-old Greinke is off to Houston, where he'll play for a rival AL pennant contender. The Diamondbacks got a quartet of prospects in return.

Adam Ottavino (4-3) got the win with a scoreless inning.

INDIANS 10, ASTROS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Roberto Perez homered twice, Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis each hit a three-run shot and Cleveland capped a power-packed day with a win over Houston.

Perez hit a three-run homer in the second inning off rookie Jose Urquidy (1-1) and a solo shot in the sixth as the Indians stayed on Minnesota's heels in the AL Central.

Santana connected for his 23rd homer in the fifth and Kipnis hit his ninth in the sixth.

Rookie right-hander Zach Plesac (6-3) recovered after a rough start and won his third start in a row.

The Indians' homer barrage came a few hours after the team acquired sluggers Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes in a three-team trade that sent starter Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati.

The Astros pulled off the biggest deadline deal, acquiring right-hander Zack Greinke from the Arizona Diamondbacks for four prospects.

REDS 4, PIRATES 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Clint Hurdle and David Bell had little interaction while exchanging lineup cards one day after their teams fought on the field, and the two teams were on good behavior during Cincinnati's victory over Pittsburgh behind a strong outing from Luis Castillo.

Bell and three Reds, including now-traded Yasiel Puig, were ejected for a ninth-inning brawl during the Pirates' 11-4 win on Tuesday night. Four Pirates also were ejected. Major League Baseball was reviewing video of the fight Wednesday and was expected to hand down suspensions over the second fracas between the NL Central rivals this season.

Bell went after Hurdle during the fight and was restrained in a headlock by batting coach Rick Eckstein. Bell repeatedly cursed Hurdle as he left the field. A day later, the two managers didn't say much while handing lineup cards to the umpires.

Castillo (10-4) gave up six hits and a run over seven innings. Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez homered off rookie Dario Agrazal (2-2), who lasted only 3 2/3 innings.

The two teams aren't done with each other. They meet again at PNC Park on Aug. 23, and wrap up the season in Pittsburgh Sept. 27-29.

CUBS 2, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kyle Hendricks struck out seven in seven innings and Ian Happ hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie as Chicago beat St. Louis and moved into a tie with the Cardinals atop the NL Central.

The teams have identical 57-50 records. The Cardinal have lost three of their last four.

Hendricks (8-8) allowed seven hits and didn't walk a batter in a 104-pitch effort.

Closer Craig Kimbrel picked his eighth save in 10 chances.

Happ, who was recalled from Triple-A Des Moines on Friday, singled off Miles Mikolas (7-11) and scored Kris Bryant, who had reached on a one-out error by third baseman Tommy Edman. Chicago scored an unearned run in the eighth inning.

RANGERS 9, MARINERS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - All-Star lefty Mike Minor won for the first time in more than a month, Shin-Soo Choo hit a solo homer and Texas beat Seattle.

Minor trailed 5-3 when he left after the top of the fifth, but Willie Calhoun's three-run homer in the bottom of the inning put the Rangers in front before they went to the bullpen.

Austin Nola and Keon Broxton homered for the Mariners, who saw the end of a six-game winning streak that had matched their longest of the season.

Minor (9-6) needed 103 pitches to get through five innings. He had five strikeouts while matching a season high in allowing 11 baserunners (seven hits, three walks and a hit batter).

Jesse Chavez, the fourth Texas reliever, worked the ninth for his first save this season.

Wade LeBlanc (6-4) was gone after 4 1/3 innings.

DODGERS 5, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) - Will Smith hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to break open a scoreless game and lead Los Angeles over Colorado.

Kristopher Negron also went deep during the rally and Alex Verdugo had four hits. Joe Kelly (5-3) pitched the eighth inning to earn the win.

Rockies starter German Marquez was helped off the field at the start of the seventh inning with what the team said was full-body cramping. The right-hander fanned 10 through six innings.

The Rockies lost because of a bad ninth inning. Closer Wade Davis (1-5) walked Cody Bellinger and gave up a single to Corey Seager with one out. Smith followed with a homer to center, his fifth of the season. Verdugo then singled and Negron homered for the second straight game.

BLUE JAYS 4, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Freddy Galvis and rookie Bo Bichette hit solo home runs as Toronto completed a three-game sweep over Kansas City.

Bichette hit his first career homer to open the eighth against Royals starter Jakob Junis. Galvis cleared the center field wall with his 16th to open the seventh.

Cavan Biggio followed Bichette's homer with a double, chasing Junis (6-10). Reliever Kevin McCarthy surrendered a run-scoring double to Teoscar Hernandez.

Rookie Jacob Waguespack (2-1) went six innings for his second win in his fourth big-league start. He held the Royals to three hits and one run.

RAYS 8, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Kevin Kiermaier homered on the first pitch he saw after coming off the injured list, and Austin Meadows hit a three-run shot to lead Tampa Bay over Boston.

The Rays jumped to a 5-0 lead against Boston starter Rick Porcello (9-8). He allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

Willy Adames also homered for Tampa Bay, which won for the fifth time in six games since losing seven of eight to fall behind Boston in the wild-card race.

Michael Chavis homered for Boston. J.D. Martinez had three hits, including his 23rd homer of the season, and Mookie Betts also had three hits.

Ryan Yarbrough (10-3) went 4 1/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs and six hits with three strikeouts. Chaz Roe earned his first save.

TIGERS 9, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jake Rogers, Brandon Dixon and Gordon Beckham went deep, Daniel Norris picked up his first win since May 12 and Detroit swept the three-game series.

Rogers opened the scoring in the third with his first big league homer.

Dixon and Beckham homered during a five-run eighth inning off Luis Garcia. Dixon - who ended up with four RBIs - had a two-run blast to left-center and Beckham's was a three-run shot to right center.

Norris (3-8) allowed only three hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

American League home run leader Mike Trout supplied the Angels' lone run with a solo shot in the sixth.

Suarez (2-2) didn't allow a hit the first two innings then surrendered four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.

TWINS 7, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Jose Berrios struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings and Minnesota hit three homers in a win over Miami.

Max Kepler hit his 29th homer of the season, Mitch Garver added a three-run shot and Eddie Rosario had a two-run home run as the Twins won for the fifth time in six games.

Berrios (10-5) retired the first 12 batters he faced, including six on strikeouts, before Neil Walker led off the fifth inning with a dribbler down the third-base line. Starlin Castro followed with a base hit to center.

Miami's Brian Anderson hit a grand slam in the ninth inning for the Marlins.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (4-10) allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

GIANTS 5, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeff Samardzija tossed three-hit ball over six scoreless innings, Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval and Kevin Pillar homered in a five-run fifth and short-handed San Francisco beat Philadelphia.

The Giants were down three relievers after a flurry of moves before the trade deadline, but Samardzija (8-8) handcuffed Philadelphia for his fifth straight road win.

Vince Velasquez (3-6) took a three-hitter into the sixth before walking Mike Yastrzemski. Posey then ripped a 2-1 fastball out to left field for only his sixth homer in 273 at-bats this season.

Adam Morgan replaced Velasquez, and Sandoval went deep to right for his 14th homer. Brandon Crawford followed with a single and then Pillar connected, sending his 13th homer out to left.

The Phillies only managed one run on Adam Haseley's RBI groundout.

METS 4, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Todd Frazier hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, Michael Conforto added a two-run single and New York beat Chicago for its season-best sixth straight victory.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom struck out 11 in a tight pitching duel with Lucas Giolito. Both 2019 All-Stars allowed just one run in seven innings.

Justin Wilson (2-1) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to get the win. Diaz gave up a solo homer to Leury Garcia but got three outs for his 24th save in 29 chances.

White Sox closer Alex Colome (3-2) took the loss. Chicago has dropped seven of eight.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Biggest baseball trade happened right at the 4:00 trade deadline.

Zack Greinke goes to Houston; he is their #3 starter, behind Verlander/Cole. Good luck beating the Astros in a short series.

Arizona is footing $24M of the $77M that Greinke is still owed on his contract. One of the pitchers Arizona got in this deal, Corbin Martin, had Tommy John surgery a few weeks ago and likely won?t pitch again until 2021.

12) Houston also acquired Aaron Sanchez, who is 0-13, 7.71 in 17 starts since May 1st.

11) Cubs added OF/3B Nicholas Castellano from Detroit for prospects.

10) Tigers also traded closer Shane Greene to the Braves.

9) A?s acquired P Tanner Roark from the Reds; Roark found out he got traded in an Arby?s parking lot, where he was ordering a beef and cheddar with curly fries.

Reds also dealt 2B Scooter Gennett to the Giants for cash.

8) Brewers traded 1B Jesus Aguilar to Tampa Bay for P Jake Faria.

7) Roberto P?rez started this season with 21 career homers in 963 career plate appearances; this year, he has 18 HR?s in 297 PA.

6) Miami Marlins traded P Zac Gallen to Arizona for SS prospect Jazz Chisholm.

Marlins also traded P?s Nick Anderson, Trevor Richards to Tampa Bay for P Ryan Stanek, OF Jesus Sanchez.

Chisholm, Sanchez are both 21-year old prospects, but Sanchez is batting only .206 at AAA Durham, Chisholm is hitting .204 in AA ball.

5) Baseball stuff:
? A?s put OF Ramon Laureano (stress reaction/shin) on IL.
? White Sox put 3B Yoan Moncada (hamstring) on IL.

4) Since 2011, teams are 181-97 when Zack Greinke starts for them, for a profit of $3,562, which makes him the most profitable pitcher to wager on during since 2011.

3) Seahawks? LB Bobby Wagner acted as his own agent, got himself a 3-year, $54M contract extension with $40.25M in guarantees, and he didn?t have to pay his agent a 3% fee, since he was the agent. Good for him.

2) Jack Flaherty, Max Fried, Lucas Giolito were all on the same HS baseball team; three major league pitchers on one high school team.

1) A 79-year-old Ohio woman is going to be spending 10 days in jail next month for the crime of giving food to stray cats; that sentence was handed down by an judge in a town called Garfield Heights, which makes it all the more strange.

10 days in jail for ignoring orders not to feed cats. Wow.

August Pitchers Report
July 31, 2019

With the MLB trading deadline closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. The question is which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs? Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher?s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season?s August list.

I?ll be back next month with September?s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, make like legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond and enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Bauer, Trevor - 12-3 (6-1 A)

In Bauer's last start in July, he added a whole new dimension to the phrase "control pitcher". With that behind him, the right-hander can focus on being a top-notch pitcher like he's frequently been in the latter stages of the season. Bauer can have a big month if he cuts back on silly mistakes now that he?s joined a pitching-rich Reds? staff.

Hamels, Cole - 14-3 (7-1 H)

The Cubs left-hander was in the midst of a fine season at 6-3 with a 2.98 ERA when he suffered aleft oblique strain. He made one rehab start on July 26th and if the next one goes well, he'll be back with Chicago in the early part of this month. If the Cubs are to return to the playoffs, they will need a healthy Hamels.

*Kluber, Corey - 15-2 (9-1 H)

The Cleveland right-hander is getting close to returning after breaking his right arm early in the season. Last month he tossed off the bullpen mound and is inching closer to a couple of rehab starts. If all goes well, he'll be back with the Indians in the second half of August and could be a major factor for the Tribe when the postseason starts, especially now that Bauer has been shipped off to Cincinnati.

Pomeranz, Drew - 9-3 (7-1 A)

The Giants lefty was afforded every opportunity to turn his season around, but with an ERA of 6.42 after another terrible start, manager Bruce Boche pulled the plug. Pomeranz is now working out of the bullpen, where he will stay barring an injury to a San Francisco starter.

*Porcello, Rick - 12-6 (7-2 H)

It has been an extremely long season for the former Cu Young winner. A good outing now for Porcello is three runs allowed in five or six innings. In an era of low batting averages, opposing batters are knocking him around for over a .280 average. As bad as he's pitched, on the road he's surrendered a .313 BA on the road. Boston could use a typical August from Porcello, but that seems unlikely.

Roark, Tanner - 13-4 (7-2 A)

After a 16-10 season with career-best 2.87 ERA in 2016, Roark was 22-26 the next two years with an ERA of 4.50. He was traded to Cincinnati in the off-season and was pitching well through June with a 3.36 ERA, but with only a .500 record due to a lack of run support. At the end of July, his ERA had zoomed to 4.24. Let's see if the right-hander can turn it around this month.

Scherzer, Max - 11-5 (5-2 A)

After being one baseball's most durable starting pitcher, Mad Max begins the month on the IL, his second stint since July. He has something called a rhomboid strain (upper back). Because this is a stretch or tear of these muscles, rest is the only real cure and there is no timetable for Scherzer return. Needless to say, Washington needs its ace.

Taillon, Jameson - 11-5 (7-1 A)

The right-hander has been out since the beginning of May because of a flexor strain and started to throw in July. On the 24th he felt tightness in his elbow and was shut down. Taillon is likely done for 2019.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Cashner, Andrew - 5-10 (2-5 H)

Cashner's ERA was about the same this season with Baltimore to match career numbers, but thanks to run support he had a 9-3 record. Traded to Boston, Cashner immediately began to get hit like a drum in a marching band, having to pitch with pressure. Unless the Red Sox hit, Cashner will not win many games for his new club.

Cole, Gerrit - 5-10 (3-6 H)

Don't expect Cole to continue to fight for wins this month. The righty is having a terrific season as 12-5 with a 2.94 ERA as August commences and with Houston's offense, he'll pile up the victories.

Matz, Steven - 2-8 (0-4 A)

Strictly a back of the rotation hurler who is a fly ball pitcher and in today's game, that's a problem. Matz is in the Top 15 of long balls allowed in the senior circuit and will likely stay there for the rest of 2019.

Sanchez, Anibal - 5-11 (2-6 H)

Thought as just an innings-eater and 5th starter for Washington, Sanchez has an ERA under 3.00 since May. With alittle better run support, he and the Nationals would have a better than 8-5 record in the span. As good as he's pitched, the numbers suggest regression going forward.

The Tigers and Rangers will also be battling a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field into the face of the batters. Other than that, winds will be rather light and variable at all of the other MLB venues.
