STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-2, 2.77 ERA, $889):
Names like deGrom and Scherzer dominant most ?best pitcher in the NL? discussions and rising stars Mike Soroka and Luis Castillo aren?t far off, Kershaw is just quietly going about his business. Heck, he may not be the best pitcher on his own team anymore.

That said, Kershaw hasn?t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since the calendar said June, and has a 1.66 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP and is limiting opponents to a .180 batting average. Unsurprisingly, Kershaw and the Dodgers are -280 road favorites tonight in Miami. The Dodgers are worth a look on the runline, maybe even an alternate runline of -2.5.

SLUMPING

Tyler Beede, San Francisco Giants (3-6, 5.61 ERA, $575):
Beede is going through a bit of a rough patch, pitching to an 8.38 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP over his last four starts. Opponents are also getting on base at an over .400 clip while touching Beede up for a 1.112 OPS. That said, the Giants are just slight +110 home dogs for this afternoon?s Battle of the Bay against the A?s.

Phillies beat up on Hamels, make Manuel's return a big hit
August 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper went deep twice and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 in Charlie Manuel's first game as hitting coach, ruining Cole Hamels' return home Wednesday night.

Manuel was back in red pinstripes in his old dugout exactly six years to the day the franchise icon managed his last game for the Phillies. He heard ''Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!'' chants after Realmuto connected to make it 10-0 in the third.

Hamels, the 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP with Manuel's Phillies, was roughed up in his first game in Philadelphia since he was traded to Texas in July 2015. Hamels (6-4) gave up eight runs and nine hits in two-plus innings.

Aaron Nola (11-3) benefited from the offense's rare outburst. He allowed three hits, including Kris Bryant's homer, and struck out seven in seven innings.

Hamels received the loudest applause during pregame introductions and got a standing ovation when he came to the plate already trailing 4-0 in the third. He wore longtime Phillies executive David Montgomery's initials on a uniform patch. Montgomery, who died in May after a five-year fight with cancer, had a close relationship with Hamels.

NATIONALS 17, REDS 7

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon, Kurt Suzuki and Adam Eaton hit homers in a 10-run fifth that included an RBI single from Stephen Strasburg (15-5), and Washington tacked on another six runs in the next inning to complete a three-game series sweep.

This marked the first time since the Nationals moved from Montreal in 2005 that every member of the team's lineup scored in a single inning. The NL wild-card leaders broke loose against Trevor Bauer (1-1) for their biggest inning of the season; they scored 11 in an inning at Colorado in 2017.

The sixth Wednesday wasn't too shabby, either, as Washington batted around again, much to the delight of a crowd of 23,596 that showed up for the unusual 4:05 p.m. weekday start.

By the time that inning was done, the club's eight position players each had scored twice and the score was 17-4. The Nationals were well on their way to improving to 65-55, pushing them 10 games above .500 for the first time since June 2018.

DODGERS 9, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Clayton Kershaw struck out the first seven batters he faced and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as Los Angeles beat Miami.

Kershaw (12-2) allowed two hits and retired the first 14 Miami batters before Harold Ramirez's two-out single to right in the fifth. The three-time Cy Young Award winner left after 90 pitches.

Rookie Edwin Rios hit his first two major league homers. Justin Turner went 3 for 5 with a home run and Corey Seager homered and had three RBIs for the Dodgers, who have outscored Miami 34-2 in the last three games.

Rios' second blast off Marlins starter Elieser Hernandez (2-5), a two-run shot that landed on the upper deck seats in right field, gave the Dodgers a 6-0 lead.

YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer and New York beat Baltimore for the 16th straight time this season.

The Yankees went 17-2 against the O's, their most wins versus any opponent in a season since going 17-5 over the Kansas City Athletics in 1959.

Sanchez's 10th homer against the Orioles this year capped a four-run burst in the first inning.

Didi Gregorius hit an RBI single and Mike Ford hit a two-run single as the Yankees won their fifth straight.

Renato Nunez had five hits, including a two-run double. Jonathan Villar drove in two runs for the last-place Orioles, who lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

J.A. Happ (10-7) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings, striking out six and walking two. Aroldis Chapman converted his 33rd save in 38 chances.

Dylan Bundy (5-13) allowed six runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

RED SOX 5, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rafael Devers homered and singled, extending his hit streak to eight straight at-bats, and Xander Bogaerts connected twice to lead Boston over Cleveland.

Devers went 6 for 6 with four doubles Tuesday night. A day later, he singled in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the third before being retired on a comebacker in the fifth.

Bogaerts hit a solo drive in the third - his 100th career homer - and a three-run shot in the seventh.

Shane Bieber (12-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, losing for the second time in 10 starts since June 25.

Boston right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-0) working two innings for his first win since last Sept. 24.

ROCKIES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give Colorado the victory.

After Trevor Story was hit by a pitch, Arenado launched a fastball from Archie Bradley (3-5) over the fence in left. It was Arenado's third career walk-off homer and first since June 18, 2017, against San Francisco.

Arenado was doused with Powerade soon after crossing home plate and mobbed by teammates. Colorado ended a string of five straight losses to Arizona. The Rockies are 14-33 since June 21, one of the worst marks by winning percentage in the majors over the stretch.

WHITE SOX 13, ASTROS 9

CHICAGO (AP) - James McCann hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning and Chicago outlasted Houston to win the season series from the runaway AL West leaders.

Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit his 20th homer and doubled, and Tim Anderson doubled twice among four hits for the White Sox. Following a doubleheader split on Tuesday, Chicago (54-65) took two of three games from the Astros in a little over 24 hours and finished 4-3 against them this year. Houston has lost three of four following an eight-game winning streak.

McCann lined his 13th homer on an 0-2 pitch from Ryan Pressly (2-3) with two outs into the right field bullpen to end a 16-game drought. The All-Star catcher hadn't gone deep since July 22, but connected for his fourth career grand slam.

ATHLETICS 9, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Chapman homered twice, including a pivotal drive in the ninth inning that followed a late collapse by Oakland's bullpen, and the Athletics held on to beat San Francisco.

Homer Bailey (10-8) pitched seven scoreless innings and singled twice. Robbie Grossman also went deep and made a sliding catch in left, and Matt Olson added a two-run double to help the A's earn a split of the two-game series between Bay Area rivals.

Mike Yastrzemski homered for San Francisco, which had won three straight.

Chapman homered off Tyler Beede (3-7) in the first and added another solo shot off Trevor Gott in the ninth after the Giants had trimmed a 7-0 lead to 7-5.

BREWERS 6, TWINS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Rookie Trent Grisham hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Milwaukee rallied to beat Minnesota.

The Brewers trailed 5-3 when Grisham, batting leadoff in his 11th game in the majors, blasted a 2-2 fastball from Sergio Romo (2-1) into the right-field stands. Ryan Braun reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jorge Polanco and Hernan Perez singled before Grisham went deep.

Junior Guerra (6-3) worked two scoreless innings for Milwaukee.

Mitch Garver, Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano each hit solo homers for the Twins, who have a major league-leading 233 home runs this season. The record is 267, set last year by the Yankees.

PADRES 7, RAYS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Cal Quantrill contributed with his arm and bat as San Diego beat Tampa Bay for the first time in over nine years.

San Diego had lost nine in a row to the Rays overall since June 23, 2010, in an interleague matchup that hasn't occurred too often. The Padres also posted their first home win over Tampa Bay - they were 0-3 against the Rays in 2004 when Petco Park opened, and had dropped the first two games of this series.

Eric Hosmer homered to help San Diego stop a three-game losing streak. Tampa Bay had won five in row, along with nine straight on the road.

Quantrill (6-3) gave up a two-run homer to Tommy Pham in the first inning, but little else before leaving with one out in the sixth. He allowed three hits and walked one, striking out six.

Rays starter Jalen Beeks (5-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.

TIGERS 3, MARINERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Reyes hit a two-run single in the second inning and Detroit held on to beat Seattle.

Harold Castro had three hits for Detroit while catcher Jake Rogers threw out two baserunners to end innings.

The Tigers improved to 4-6 with one game left in an 11-game homestand. Seattle has lost nine of 11.

Edwin Jackson (3-5) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out four and allowed two homers while winning his second straight start.

Marco Gonzales (12-6) gave up three runs on 11 hits in six innings.

RANGERS 7, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Kolby Allard pitched 5 2/3 innings to win for the first time with Texas, Elvis Andrus had four hits and two RBIs and the Rangers beat Toronto to avoid a three-game sweep.

Nomar Mazara and Danny Santana hit solo home runs as the Rangers wrapped up a three-city trip by scoring more than five runs for the first time in that stretch of road games. The Rangers went 3-6 against Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Toronto, winning once against each opponent.

Texas came in with two hits in its previous 40 at-bats with runners in scoring position, then went 4 for 12 in such situations Wednesday.

Making his second start for the Rangers after being acquired from Atlanta last month, Allard (1-0) allowed three runs and four hits. The 22-year-old left-hander walked three and struck out five.

Thursday?s 6-pack

? Nationals 17, Reds 7? Game was 1-0 in middle of 5th inning.

? Rockies 7, Arizona 6? Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off tater.

? Braves 6, Mets 4? Keuchel tossed six shutout innings.

? Phillies 11, Cubs 1? Charlie Manuel?s 1st game as hitting coach was a success.

? Dodgers 9, Marlins 1? Kershaw struck out Miami?s first seven hitters.

? Brewers 6, Twins 5? Rookie OF Grisham hit a 3-run HR in 8th inning.

Quote of the Day
?I just think he?s got that thing the great ones have. The ability to process information very quickly, and his spatial awareness. He sees angles quicker than other people. He?s going to be a good one.?
Tony Romo, talking about Jets? QB Sam Darnold

Thursday?s quiz
Who is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? all-time leader in passing yards?

Wednesday?s quiz
Indianapolis Colts? coach Frank Reich was once a QB who led his college team to a 42-40 win after they trailed 31-0 in that game; he also won an NFL playoff game after his team trailed by 32 points.

Tuesday?s quiz
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett played college football at Princeton and was later Nick Saban?s QB coach with the Miami Dolphins.

*****************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Smart move; ESPN?s new gambling-related program, Daily Wager, will have a 9am Sunday slot on ESPN2 during football season. It actually should be on closer to kickoff, but a very good move to give it Sunday exposure.

12) July sports betting revenue in New Jersey: $17,884,790

Year-to-date sports betting revenue in New Jersey: $127,518,555

11) According to Caesar?s sportsbook, Miami Dolphins are 5-2 favorites to finish with the worst record in the NFL this season. Giants/Bengals have next-lowest odds, at 9-2.

10) This makes no sense to me; you can go into the Army and fight in a war at age 18, but you can?t gamble in a casino until you?re 21. No bueno.

9) Sounds as if LT Trent Williams won?t be playing for the Redskins anytime soon, which is bad news for Washington fans and for the health of the Redskins? QB?s.

8) A?s 9, Giants 5? 30-year old rookie named Corban Joseph went 1-4, knocked in a run in this game, his first in MLB this year, six years after his MLB debut.

In 2013, Joseph went 1-6 in two games for Bronx; last year, he was 4-18 in 14 games for the Orioles. This year, Joseph hit .371 at AAA Las Vegas, so he got the call this week with Oakland struggling getting offense from the keystone position.

That is what is cool about the minor leagues; guys who refuse to give up on their dreams, and once in a while, they get called (back) up to the majors and those dreams are realized.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Giants put 3B Pablo Sandoval on the IL.
? Mets put 2B/OF Jeff MacNeil (hamstring) on the IL.
? Rays put OF Avisail Garcia (oblique) on the IL.
? Pirates? P Jameson Taillon had Tommy John surgery Tuesday.
? Arizona P Robbie Ray took himself out of Wednesday?s game after two innings.

6) Olive Garden is offering a limited number of customers unlimited pasta for life for $500 beginning Thursday at 2pm. At $10.99 a pop, you go more than 45 times the rest of your life, and you?re making money on the deal.

They offered the same deal two years ago and they sold out in under 90 seconds.

5) Odd Fact of the Day;
? Hunter Renfroe is an outfielder for the San Diego Padres.
? Hunter Renfrow is a wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders.

4) Tampa Bay Rays average 15,000+ fans per home game; they average 26,000+ on the road.

3) On August 1, a 22-year-old gambler wagered $2,000 on the Mets to win the World Series at a FanDuel sportsbook, which would pay him $200,000. Mets were 52-55 at the time, but had won six games in a row.

2) They had Bark at the Park at the Rockies? game Tuesday night; there was a dog there that weighs 190 pounds. Can?t even imagine owning a dog that is so big- its owners said the dog sleeps 18 hours a day.

1) New York 6, Baltimore 5? Hard to believe, but the Orioles were in the playoffs three years ago; they?re 39-82 this season, and have zero hope of contending anytime soon. Pitching is a very important part of baseball, and the Orioles are sorely lacking in pitching prospects.

Mercifully, this is the last time these two teams meet this season.

LEADING OFF: Indians head to NYC for a week, Arrieta's call
August 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

BIG APPLE TEST

Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor and the Indians own the majors' best record since early June, going 43-19 while whittling away an 11 1/2-game deficit in the AL Central. Now, Yasiel Puig and his new teammates are set to spend more than a week in New York, starting with a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Adam Plutko (4-3, 4.68 ERA) pitches the opener, taking on a big-hitting Yankees team that has the best record in the majors and has won five in a row. After taking on Gleyber Torres, Aaron Judge and the Yanks, the Indians move across town for a three-game set vs. the Mets and their talented rotation. Cleveland has never played at Citi Field - its only trip to face the Mets was in 2004 at Shea Stadium.

WINNING WAYS

Oakland righty Mike Fiers (11-3, 3.30 ERA) takes a nine-game winning streak into this outing at home against Houston. Fiers, who pitched a no-hitter for the Astros in 2015, has no-decisions in all three starts vs. the AL West leaders this year.

Aaron Sanchez (5-14, 5.60) starts for Houston. Leading the majors in losses when he was traded from Toronto to the Astros last month, Sanchez is trying for his third straight victory since the deal.

ARRIETA'S DECISION

Phillies right-hander Jake Arrieta likely will have season-ending surgery soon because of a bone spur in his pitching elbow. He's having an MRI and will determine his course of action after that.

Arrieta was put on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. He's been pitching through pain for several starts but his inability to go more than five innings led him to shut it down.

The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner with the Cubs joined the Phils on a three-year, $75 million contract in March 2018. He is 8-8 with a 4.64 ERA this season and was 10-11 with a 3.96 ERA last year.

NOTHING YET

The Marlins have the worst record in the National League going into their game at home against Walker Buehler (10-2, 3.08 ERA) and the Dodgers.

Miami appears headed to its second straight last-place finish under CEO Derek Jeter, who isn't ready to say whether manager - and former Yankees teammate - Don Mattingly will return next season. Mattingly is in the final year of a four-year contract.

''To be fair to Donnie, it's something we need to talk about sooner rather than later,'' Jeter said. ''There are a lot of things that go into it. Donnie has done a good job.''

Said Mattingly: ''I'd love to be back, especially if they want me back.''

The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds tangle in the Queen City at Great American Ball Park on Thursday evening, kicking off a four-game set between these National League Central Division rivals. The Reds are limping home after having their lunch handed to them in D.C. by the red-hot Washington Nationals. The Nats capped off a three-game sweep with a 17-7 whitewashing on Wednesday which resembled more of a score we'd expect from the upcoming Cincinnati Bengals-Washington Redskins preseason football game this week.

The Reds were outscored 27-14 in the three-game sete, and the over has been the rule for Cincinnati of late. The over is an impressive 8-2-1 across the past 11 outings, while going 4-1-1 in the past six at GABP. The over is also 4-0 in RHP Sonny Gray's past four outings, and 5-2 in the team's past seven against right-handed starting pitchers, while going an impressive 6-2-1 in their past nine against winning sides

For the Cardinals, it's been the complete opposite. The under is a perfect 6-0 in their past six away from home, while going 5-0 in the past five on the road vs. RHP and 5-1-1 in the past seven inside the division. The under is also 22-8-1 in their past 31 games overall. With RHP Michael Wacha on the hill, he is good for under results, too. The under is 4-0 across his past four showings, 5-1 in his past six on the road and 4-0 in his past four in Game 1 of a new series. If you're looking for some support for the over, it is 4-1-1 in the past six starts by Wacha against division foes and 6-1-1 in his past eight starts when working on nine or more days of rest.

Out west, the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics square off in the Bay Area. Newcomer RHP Aaron Sanchez goes for the Astros, and he'll be opposed by RHP Mike Fiers, who had a no-hitter earlier this season.

Sanchez will be making his third start since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the Major League Baseball trade deadline. He has allowed just one earned run, three hits and five walks with 12 strikeouts over 11 innings in his two outings. The under hit in his first appearance for Houston, but the Astros piled up 23 runs in a massacre in Baltimore in his most recent outing. Overall the under is 8-2 in Houston's past 10 inside the AL West, and 10-3 in the past 13 against teams with a winning overall record.

For the A's, the under is 4-1-1 in the past six overall, 4-1 in the past five at home vs. RHP and 7-2 in the past nine against teams with a winning percentage over .600. As far as Fiers is concerned, the under is 9-2 across his past 11 showings, 5-2 in his past seven at home and 7-2 in his past nine against winning teams. The under is also 5-1 in his past six in Game 1 of a new series. The under has also cashed in five of the past seven meetings in this series, too.

Wind Report
Winds will be light and variable at most MLB venues, and not much of a factor as a result. The only venues which might be slightly affected will be Yankee Stadium, for the Indians-Yankees battle, and SunTrust Park for the Mets-Braves contest. In New York, the winds will be blowing in from right field to home plate at 7-10 mph clip, while in Atlanta the winds are blowing out from 6-9 mph to straightaway center field.

Friday, Aug. 16

The Orioles limp into Fenway Park to face the Red Sox, kicking off a three-game set. The over has been the rule for both of these teams lately. The over has connected in six straight on the road for the Orioles, while going 7-0-1 in their past eight inside the AL East. The over is also an impressive 9-1-1 in the past 11 vs. RHP, and 24-8-3 in the past 35 against teams with a winning overall record. For the BoSox, the over is 23-8-1 in their previous 32 games inside the division, while hitting in eight of their past 11 vs. RHP. With RHP Rick Porcello on the hill, the over has cashed in six straight at Fenway Park, and eight in a row on a grass surface. In this series, the over is 4-1-1 in the past six meetings, and 3-1-1 in Porcello's past five against the O's.

The Mets stroll into Kauffman Stadium kicking off a three-game interleague set against the lowly Royals. The Mets will be facing LHP Mike Montgomery, and the under is 5-0-1 in their past six against a left-handed starter, while going 3-0-1 in the past four on the road vs. LHP. The under is also 4-1 in their past five interleague road games, and 6-1 in the past seven interleague games overall. RHP Noah Syndergaard takes the ball, and the under is 4-1-1 in his past six away from home when facing a team with a losing overall mark, although the over is 8-2 in his past 10 when working on five days of rest. For the Royals, it's all under all the time lately. The under is 4-1 in their past five overall, 4-1 in the past five against winning teams and 5-0 in the past five vs. RHP. The under is also 25-7 in their past 32 against the Senior Circuit, while going 22-7-1 in the past 30 interleague battles at home.

In Oakland, the Astros use RHP Justin Verlander against new Athletics hurler RHP Tanner Roark, facing the Astros for the first time donning green and gold. The under is 11-3 in Verlander's past 14 starts against teams with a winning overall record, while going 3-1-1 in his past five inside the division. The under is also 4-1 in his past five overall, and 21-7-1 in his past 29 while working on four days of rest. As far as Roark is concerned, he has allowed four runs - three earned - and 10 hits across 11 2/3 innings while striking out 13 in his two starts with the A's. The under has connected in each of his outings with Oakland.

Wind Report
On Friday night, a hot wind will be howling at 11-14 mph from right field into the face of the batters at Globe Life Park for the Twins-Rangers battle. The Marlins-Rockies will experience 8-11 mph winds blowing in from right field, while the Mets and Royals will see winds from 6-9 mph blowing in from right field as they dodge raindrops. The rain chances are 30 percent for the interleague series opener.

Thursday's NL Tip Sheet
August 15, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Mets at Braves (-120, 10) ? 7:20 PM EST

The Mets (61-59) are hoping the clock isn?t striking midnight faster than they think. Following a 15-1 run, New York has dropped three consecutive games, including each of the first two contests of its series against NL East-leading Atlanta (72-50). The Braves are coming off a pair of two-run victories in each of the first two games, including a 6-4 triumph at SunTrust Park on Wednesday.

The two division rivals sat through a lengthy rain delay prior to the Braves grabbing a 1-0 lead in the second inning, an advantage that would last until the seventh inning. New York went in front, 2-1 on a two-run single by J.D. Davis, but that lead was short-lived as the Braves rebounded with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Atlanta didn?t go the power route in that frame, instead scoring four of the runs on singles to pick up consecutive home wins for the first time since July 4 and 5.

Atlanta seeks the sweep tonight as Julio Teheran (7-7, 3.35 ERA) takes the mound, seeking his first home victory since June 13. The Braves have won six of Teheran?s last eight starts, including an 8-4 win at Miami last Friday as a -145 road favorite. In spite of Teheran not picking up a home victory in his last four starts, the right-hander has allowed four earned runs in this span, but the Braves lost to the Reds and Royals in his past two outings at SunTrust Park.

Teheran is facing the Mets for the fourth time this season as the Braves are 2-1 in the first three starts. Back in mid-April, Teheran defeated Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom as a +145 home underdog, 7-3, as the Braves? hurler scattered six hits and allowed one run in six innings. deGrom and the Mets picked up revenge in the next matchup at SunTrust Park on June 18 as the Braves were pounded, 10-2 and Teheran lasted four innings while giving up six runs. Teheran didn?t make it through four innings at Citi Field on June 29, but the Braves edged the Mets, 5-4.

Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.20 ERA) makes his third start for the Mets since getting dealt from Toronto in late July. New York has rallied for victory in each of his first two outings as the Mets overcame a 3-1 deficit in a 7-5 triumph at Pittsburgh on July 3 although Stroman didn?t finish the fifth inning. Stroman tossed six innings in his home debut against Washington last Friday and allowed four runs, but the Mets pulled off one of the biggest stunners of the season by rallying for four ninth inning runs in a 7-6 win as a +115 underdog.

The Braves are seeking their third home sweep of the season as Atlanta took three from Chicago in early April and pulled off a four-game sweep of Pittsburgh in mid-June. The Mets are 0-3 this season when trying to avoid a road sweep of three or more games, as New York scored 3, 0, and 2 runs in those defeats.

Giants at Diamondbacks (-148, 9 ?) ? 9:40 PM EST

The NL West race is basically over as the Dodgers are on their way to their seventh consecutive division title. However, San Francisco (60-61) and Arizona (61-60) each have ambitions to make the playoffs through the Wild Card route. The Diamondbacks sit 3 ? games behind the Cubs for the second Wild Card spot in the National League, while the Giants are lurking at 4 ? games back, but the Brewers, Phillies, and Mets are also fighting it out for a postseason position.

The Giants head out to the desert to begin a crucial nine-game road trip, which continues to Chicago on Tuesday to face the Cubs, followed by a return to the Bay Area to square off with the rival Athletics next weekend in Oakland. San Francisco split a pair of games with Oakland at Oracle Park to finish its homestand at 4-5, capped off by a 9-5 defeat to the A?s on Wednesday. The Giants fell behind 7-0 before rallying for five runs in the eighth inning to make things interesting. Oakland tacked on two runs in the ninth for some breathing room and the victory as Tyler Beede took the loss for San Francisco as the Giants are 0-5 in the right-hander?s last five outings.

Arizona concluded its road trip at 3-3 following a loss in walk-off fashion to Colorado on Wednesday, 7-6. The D-backs captured the first two games at Coors Field against the struggling Rockies and built a 5-2 advantage in the finale, but Colorado tied the game at 5-5 and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to prevent Arizona?s first road sweep since early June at Toronto.

The D-backs send out rookie Alex Young (4-2, 3.32 ERA), who is coming off losses in his last two starts to the Nationals and Dodgers. Young wasn?t helped out by his offense in those defeats, as Arizona was shut out in each game, while the former TCU standout gave up four runs in 3.1 innings of a 4-0 setback at Los Angeles last Saturday. The southpaw dominated the Giants at Oracle Park in his Major League debut on June 27 in a 5-1 victory as Young struck out five batters in five innings.

The Giants have won eight of their last nine road series openers heading into tonight?s action as Dereck Rodriguez (4-6, 5.32 ERA) makes his first start since August 1. Rodriguez was knocked around by the Phillies in a 10-2 setback as a +145 road underdog, marking only his second away loss of the season. In each of his four road victories, Rodriguez has not lasted past the sixth inning, but he has defeated the Rockies, Padres, and Nationals in the underdog role, while starting against Arizona for the first time this season.

San Francisco has seen success at Chase Field this season by capturing two of three games twice, including a series win in late June. Arizona has lost three of its past four home series openers, as the D-backs have scored three runs or fewer in the three defeats.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Mike Fiers, Oakland Athletics (11-3, 3.30 ERA, $662):
Fiers is fire. The A?s right-hander owns a sparkling 1.79 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in six starts since the All-Star break and is coming off of a seven-inning of shutout, three-hit ball against the White Sox.

However, Fiers is up a tough foe as the A?s host the division leading Astros. The A?s are currently +110 home dogs for the opener and for a complete breakdown of this matchup, check out our Game of the Day betting preview.

SLUMPING

Drew Smyly, Philadelphia Phillies (2-6, 6.96 ERA, $-74):
Smyly has come back down to Earth a bit after getting off to a good start in Philadelphia. The lefty has surrendered nine runs on 11 hits, which includes four dingers, in his last two starts and those came against the Giants and White Sox. Not exactly a murderer?s row of lineups. Smyly and the Phillies are +130 home dogs for tonight?s matchup with the Cubs.

Harper grand slam helps Phils sweep Cubs
August 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Bryce Harper blasted a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning, capping a six-run rally that sent the Philadelphia Phillies over the Chicago Cubs 7-5 Thursday night for a three-game sweep.

Harper delivered his biggest hit yet in his first season with the Phillies, celebrating while running around the bases and then getting mobbed by teammates at the plate.

Cubs starter Yu Darvish struck out 10, silencing Philadelphia's bats for seven innings a night after the Phillies scored 11 runs in former manager Charlie Manuel's debut as hitting coach.

But the Phillies rallied against Chicago's bullpen and moved within one game of the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL.

Ranger Suarez (4-1) tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win.

Pedro Strop (2-5) took the loss.

Kyle Schwarber slammed his 100th career homer and team-high 28th this season, and Anthony Rizzo hit his 22nd homer.

INDIANS 19, YANKEES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit two early homers, including his first career grand slam in a seven-run opening inning, and Cleveland pummeled New York.

Carlos Santana also launched two home runs as the Yankees matched a franchise record by serving up seven. Greg Allen and Santana went back-to-back in a five-run eighth against rookie designated hitter Mike Ford, a former Ivy League pitcher and player of the year at Princeton.

Ramirez and Jason Kipnis smacked consecutive homers off ineffective opener Chad Green (2-4).

Every starter for Cleveland finished with at least two of the team's 24 hits.

Adam Plutko (5-3) was handed a 7-0 cushion before throwing a pitch and went six innings to beat the Yankees for the second time this season.

Didi Gregorius, Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres homered for New York.

METS 10, BRAVES 8

ATLANTA (AP) - Pete Alonso drove in six runs with five hits, including a three-run homer that helped lead to Julio Teheran's shortest career start, and New York held on to beat Atlanta.

Alonso's 39th homer tied Cody Bellinger for the National League rookie record. Bellinger hit 39 homers for the Dodgers in 2017, the same year the Yankees' Aaron Judge set the major league rookie mark with 52. Alonso set career highs for hits and RBIs.

The Mets had a season-high 23 hits. Amed Rosario's career-high five hits included two doubles, two singles and a triple. Wilson Ramos had four hits. Todd Frazier also homered.

New York won despite giving up six homers, including three in the ninth. Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson each hit his second homer of the game in the inning and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a two-run shot. Matt Joyce homered in the fourth.

Marcus Stroman (7-11) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Edwin Diaz earned his 25th save.

Teheran (7-8) recorded only four outs while giving up eight hits and six runs.

REDS 2, CARDINALS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Sonny Gray struck out 10 while pitching five scoreless innings, and Cincinnati held off St. Louis.

Gray, Robert Stephenson, Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias combined for a two-hitter. Iglesias surrendered Kolten Wong's check-swing RBI double in the ninth before retiring pinch-hitter Matt Wieters to finish his 24th save.

Nick Senzel and Eugenio Suarez each drove in a run for Cincinnati, which stopped a four-game slide.

St. Louis had won five in a row to move into a virtual tie with Chicago for the NL Central lead. The Cubs had a chance to move in front again, but they lost 7-5 at Philadelphia on Bryce Harper's game-ending grand slam.

Gray (8-6) walked three and hit a batter while throwing 97 pitches.

Michael Wacha (6-6) extended the St. Louis pitching staff's streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 22 before the Reds pushed across two runs in the fifth.

MARLINS 13, DODGERS 1

MIAMI (AP) -Miami turned the tables on Los Angeles, winning despite giving up four home runs, including Cody Bellinger's 40th.

The Dodgers increased their homer total this week at pitcher-friendly Marlins Park to 14, a franchise record for a three-game series. Max Muncy hit his 29th, Corey Seager his 12th and Kyle Garlick his third.

Bellinger reached the 40 mark for the first time with a three-run shot in the seventh.

Brian Anderson, Starlin Castro, Jorge Alfaro and Lewis Brinson each had three RBIs for Miami, and Jon Berti scored three times. The last time Marlins had four players with three or more RBIs was in 2006.

Caleb Smith (8-6) needed 106 pitches to get through five innings but allowed only one hit and one run - on Garlick's homer in the fifth.

Walker Buehler (10-3) allowed five runs in four-plus innings.

MARINERS 7, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Dylan Moore homered and Kyle Seager drove in three runs in Seattle's win over Detroit.

Mallex Smith stole two bases, giving him 34, the most in the majors. The Mariners won two of three after losing eight of their previous nine.

Detroit finished 4-7 on its 11-game homestand to fall to 17-43 at home. The Tigers need to win five of their last 21 games at Comerica Park to avoid becoming the first team to lose 60 times at home.

Tommy Milone (2-7) allowed two runs and six hits in four innings.

Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull (3-11) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. Turnbull struck out seven batters in the first three innings, but only retired the side in order in the first. The Mariners put two runners on in the second and scored three runs in the third.

TWINS 13, RANGERS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Luis Arraez hit the first of three more homers by Minnesota in a win over Texas.

Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario also went deep for Minnesota (73-48), which maintained a half-game lead over Cleveland for the AL Central lead. Marwin Gonzalez had a pair of RBI singles among his four hits.

Michael Pineda (8-5) struck out six with one walk while allowing three runs and six hits over five innings. He threw 55 of 86 pitches for strikes in his first start since Aug. 1. Drew Smeltzer threw the final four innings for his first save.

Willie Calhoun and Hunter Pence homered for the Rangers.

Texas rookie starter Pedro Payano (1-2) allowed eight runs - five of them earned - in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.

? A?s 7, Astros 6? This was the 9,000th win in A?s franchise history; 5th game in MLB history where four players homered twice each.

Quote of the Day
?From New York City you drive north for about 175 miles, turn left on Union Avenue and go back 100 years.?
The late Red Smith, describing how to get to Saratoga racetrack

Friday?s quiz
Where did Jaguars? QB Nick Foles play his college football?

Thursday?s quiz
Vinny Testaverde is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? all-time leader in passing yards.

Wednesday?s quiz
Indianapolis Colts? coach Frank Reich was once a QB who led his college team to a 42-40 win after they trailed 31-0 in that game; he also won an NFL playoff game after his team trailed by 32 points.

**************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) In the 50 years of divisional play in baseball, only three times has a team won its division with a road record that was 10+ games under .500. This year?s Cubs are 23-37 on the road; they?re first place in the NL Central.

12) I?m guessing that these NFL joint practices where teams meet up for a couple days and practice against each other are more helpful then just a normal team practice. Breaks up the monotony of training camp- practicing against new faces increases whatever intensity there is.

11) Marlins 13, Dodgers 7? If a baseball game was ever played in a library, it would?ve sounded like this; the 5,000 or so fans who were there didn?t make much noise, to the point where the Dodger TV guys were talking about how players/managers were more likely to be ejected on a day like this, because the umpires could hear every word they said.

10) Interesting discussion on ESPN the other night on how catchers now value pitch-framing more than blocking low pitches or throwing out baserunners trying to steal.

As long as there is no baserunner on third, catchers now often stay on one knee and focus on getting their pitchers called strikes. There has been an increase in wild pitches/passed balls in recent years, and this is the reason why, not because pitchers? stuff is any nastier.

9) When you look at stats for AAA pitchers this year, important to keep in mind that they?re using the major league (juiced) baseball this year for the first time.

Last year, Lehigh Valley led the International League wth 145 homers; so far this year, eight of the 14 IL teams have hit more than 145 and the season still has a few weeks left.

8) Last nine baseball seasons, the first player to get to 30 home runs has been a different player every year. Jose Bautista reached 30 homers first in both 2010-11.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Reds scratched 1B Joey Votto (lower back).
? A?s signed P Matt Harvey to a minor league deal. I?m not sure having Harvey pitch in Las Vegas is an ideal situation, seeing how Harvey has had issues getting to the ballpark on time in his career.

6) Michigan?s basketball program offered a scholarship to rising Class of ?20 recruit Jace Howard, an unranked forward prospect from Miami. Chances are the Wolverines will get him, seeing how Jace Howard is the son of new Michigan coach Juwan Howard.

5) JT Realmuto caught only one game as a high school senior; he played shortstop mostly, but a wise scout projected him as a catcher and now Realmuto is a very wealthy catcher.

4) If you?ve ever seen the reality show ?Chrisley Knows Best,? on USA Network, you probably won?t be seeing it anymore. Todd and Julie Chrisley were indicted on tax evasion and fraud charges, and are in custody in Georgia.

The 12-count indictment also alleges the Chrisleys committed bank fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, as well as other illegal stuff.

3) DeMarcus Cousins hurt his knee Monday while working out in Las Vegas; fears are that he tore his ACL. He signed a one-year, $3.5M contract with the Lakers in July, has earned $83M+ in salary in his career, but he hasn?t had much injury luck the last few years.

2) Former Oklahoma/Steelers QB Landry Jones became the first quarterback to sign a contract with the XFL, which begins play next February. Jones had recently worked out for the Detroit Lions after one of their backup QB?s got hurt.

The XFL?s first player draft is in October.

1) Great name for a racehorse: Tequila Sheila (25-1) ran in the 5th race at Gulfstream Thursday. Good name, slow horse; Tequila Sheila didn?t hit the board, or come close.
