Rendon helps Nats sweep Cubs 7-5 in 11 for 5th straight win
August 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Anthony Rendon homered and had four hits, including an RBI single in the 11th inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 7-5 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory.

Juan Soto added three hits and Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 in six innings, helping Washington finish off its first sweep of Chicago since September 2012. The Nationals outscored the Cubs 23-10 in a three-game series between the top two teams in the NL wild-card standings.

Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell and Victor Caratini homered for Chicago, which had won five in a row before Washington rolled into town. The Cubs fell 2+ games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

The Nationals grabbed the lead for good when Howie Kendrick scored on Tyler Chatwood's wild pitch with Rendon at the plate in the 11th. Rendon then drove in Trea Turner with a single off Chatwood (5-2).

Daniel Hudson (7-3) pitched two innings for the win.

The Cubs played without Anthony Rizzo, sidelined by tightness in his back.

YANKEES 5, DODGERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge and Mike Ford homered, Domingo German outdueled Clayton Kershaw for his major league-leading 17th win, and New York defeated Los Angeles.

The Yankees set a major league record for most homers in a month with 61 in August. They slugged nine in taking two of three games in a potential World Series preview to remain tied with Houston for the best record in the American League at 85-47.

German (17-3) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kershaw (13-3) gave up three homers for the second straight game. The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings. He struck out a season-high 12 and walked none.

Kershaw had won 11 consecutive interleague decisions, and each of his last six decisions overall.

Ford came off the bench in the third when Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius exited a couple of innings after getting hit by a pitch from Kershaw. Gregorius sustained a bruised right shoulder and was to have X-rays at the ballpark later.

Ford homered to extend the Yankees' lead to 3-1 in the sixth. His RBI double to deep left field made it 4-1 in the eighth.

Judge, who wears No. 99, launched his 99th career homer in the third, snapping a 1-all tie. In the bottom half, Brett Gardner robbed Corey Seager of a potential three-run homer.

LeMahieu and Joc Pederson traded leadoff homers in the first.

CARDINALS 11, ROCKIES 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Carpenter broke out of his slump with a homer and three hits, Dexter Fowler drove in three runs and St. Louis cruised past Colorado after a long rain delay.

The streaking Cardinals, who have won seven of eight and 13 of 16, swept the four-game series by a combined score of 31-12. They are a season-high 13 games over .500.

Nolan Arenado and Garrett Hampson homered for the Rockies, who have dropped six of seven. Arenado reached 100 RBIs for the fifth successive season.

Tommy Edman had three hits and Lane Thomas added a pinch-hit homer for St. Louis. Ryan Helsley (1-0) picked up his first career win with 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Antonio Senzatela (8-8) was tagged for six runs and five hits over 1 2/3 innings in his return from the minors.

GIANTS 5, ATHLETICS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Evan Longoria homered early and hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning as San Francisco rallied late again to beat Oakland for a two-game sweep.

Donovan Solano added four hits and an RBI for the Giants in Bruce Bochy's 4,000th game as a major league manager. Buster Posey struck out four times and grounded into a double play.

Mark Canha homered twice for the Athletics, both off starter Logan Webb. Canha also struck out with the bases loaded to end the fifth.

Oakland remains a half-game behind Tampa Bay for the second AL wild card.

Sam Coonrod (4-0) retired three batters and Will Smith pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

Jake Diekman (1-7) took the loss.

BRAVES 2, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Josh Donaldson hit two more home runs against the Mets, Dallas Keuchel pitched his best game of the season and Atlanta won its eighth in a row by holding off New York.

Braves relievers set an Atlanta record by extending their string to 25 scoreless innings before the Mets scored in the ninth. Mark Melancon got pinch-hitter Joe Panik to ground out with two on to end it.

The NL East leaders completed a three-game sweep and matched their longest winning streak of the season. The Mets dropped to 5-11 against Atlanta, long their nemesis.

A day after hitting his 30th home run, Donaldson connected twice to give him nine against the Mets this season. He tied Hank Aaron's club mark for most homers in a year versus the Mets - Hammerin' Hank did it against the expansion club in 1962.

Keuchel (5-5) allowed four hits in seven innings, striking out seven.

Sean Newcomb pitched a perfect eighth and Melancon closed for his sixth save, including a 5-for-5 performance since being traded from San Francisco to the Braves in late July.

Steven Matz (8-8) took the hard-luck loss.

TWINS 7, TIGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - C.J. Cron and Jonathan Schoop homered, Martin Perez pitched six solid innings and Minnesota beat last-place Detroit to increase its AL Central lead to 3+ games over Cleveland.

Cron's three-run shot broke open a 2-0 game in the fourth and gave Perez (9-5) plenty of cushion to work with. The left-hander allowed two runs and five hits for his first win since July 5.

Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd (6-10) permitted just four hits but was tagged for seven runs in six innings. He walked a season-high five.

ROYALS 9, INDIANS 8, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Ryan O'Hearn led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game, sending Kansas City to a wild win over the Cleveland Indians, whose playoff hopes were rocked by losing third baseman Jose Ramirez to a broken right hand.

The Indians tied it in the ninth against Ian Kennedy (1-2) on a solo homer by Francisco Lindor and Franmil Reyes' stunning three-run shot with two outs. Reyes also homered leading off the eighth.

O'Hearn connected off Nick Goody (3-1) as the Royals salvaged a back-and-forth series finale to snap a four-game losing streak. O'Hearn also homered in the third against Indians starter Shane Bieber.

Jorge Lopez worked the 10th for his first major league save.

Losing the game was secondary to the Indians, who will be without Ramirez for their playoff push. The two-time All-Star will undergo surgery Monday in New York to repair a fractured hamate bone, and the club won't know his recovery time until after the procedure.

ASTROS 11, ANGELS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve homered to cap a seven-run eighth inning, Framber Valdez grinded through six gritty innings and Houston beat Los Angeles.

Alex Bregman, Abraham Toro, Josh Reddick and Altuve all drove in runs in the eighth. Altuve's homer was his 24th, tying a career high. Houston has won seven of eight. The club entered the day tied with the Yankees for the best record in the AL at 84-47.

Valdez (4-6) gave up one run, two hits and five walks but struck out eight.

Jaime Barria (4-7) only gave up two runs but still was stuck with his fourth-straight loss. Barria allowed three hits, struck out four and walked three in 5 1/3 innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Robbie Ray returned from the injured list and pitched five scoreless innings, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker each homered, and Arizona beat Milwaukee to avoid a series sweep.

Ray (11-7) had been out since Aug. 14 due to lower back spasms. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six in five innings. The left-hander has thrown 18 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against the Brewers.

Escobar hit his 29th homer and Walker got his 23rd. Archie Bradley retired Christian Yelich with two on in the ninth to finish his seventh save.

Zach Davies (8-7) allowed four runs in four innings and dropped his fifth straight start.

PADRES 3, RED SOX 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado hit a two-run homer - his first in more than three weeks - and left-hander Joey Lucchesi pitched five decent innings for San Diego in a victory over Boston to avoid a three-game sweep.

Machado, the $300 million slugger, drove a pitch from left-hander Brian Johnson (1-3) for his 27th homer to give the Padres a 3-0 lead. It was the third straight hit off Johnson to open the game. It was the Padres' 190th homer of the season, setting the franchise's season record.

Lucchesi (9-7) allowed one run and three hits in five innings, struck out three and walked two.

His only big mistake was allowing J.D. Martinez's 411-foot home run into the top balcony of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner for Boston's first hit of the game with two outs in the fourth. It was his 31st.

MARLINS 3, PHILLIES 2

MIAMI (AP) - Starlin Castro's two-run double in the sixth inning capped a comeback by Miami, who rallied against Aaron Nola (12-4) to beat Philadelphia.

Four Miami pitchers combined on a four-hitter and allowed one walk after giving up 10 bases on balls in each of the first two games of the series.

Elieser Hernandez (3-5) gave up two runs in six innings. Ryne Stanek pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his first career save.

Rhys Hoskins hit his 25th homer for Philadelphia.

PIRATES 9, REDS 8

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trevor Bauer had another rocky outing for Cincinnati, allowing eight runs in three innings as Pittsburgh swept a three-game series.

Since being acquired from the Cleveland Indians prior to the July 31 trade deadline, Bauer (10-11) is 1-3 with a 7.62 ERA in five starts. Seven of the runs charged to him Sunday were earned, and he had two walks and two strikeouts.

Eugenio Suarez's leadoff home run in the ninth inning drew the Reds within a run, but Felipe Vazquez retired the last three hitters for his 23rd save in 25 opportunities.

Dario Agrazal (3-3) allowed four runs in five innings to end his three-game losing streak. The rookie struck out five and walked two.

ORIOLES 8, RAYS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Anthony Santander went 5 for 5 with a homer, Renato Nunez drove in three runs and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay for a split of the four-game series.

Rays opener Diego Castillo (2-7) gave up one run over two innings before Jalen Beeks was roughed up for seven runs and 11 hits in five innings.

Tampa Bay loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before Dylan Bundy (6-13) got Joey Wendle to bounce into a double play, one of four turned by the Orioles.

WHITE SOX 2, RANGERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Reynaldo Lopez (8-11) pitched five no-hit innings before leaving with dehydration and flu-like symptoms and Chicago beat Texas.

Jose Abreu drove in both runs to reach 100 RBIs for the fifth time in six seasons. Alex Colome worked around a walk in the ninth to earn his 25th save after Aaron Bummer allowed Texas' first hit in the sixth.

Brock Burke (0-1) allowed a run and two hits over six innings.

MARINERS 3, BLUE JAYS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Marco Gonzales (14-10) pitched three-hit ball over seven innings to get his career-best 14th win, Dylan Moore hit a solo homer and Seattle beat Toronto.

Matt Magill allowed a one-out double to Derek Fisher in the ninth but struck out Teoscar Hernandez and got Brandon Drury to fly out to first baseman Austin Nola in foul territory for his fourth save.

Moore started the scoring with Seattle's first hit, sending a 2-1 pitch from Clay Buchholz (0-3) over the left-center field wall for his sixth home run.

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) For 19 of the last 21 years, the Indianapolis Colts have had Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck as their starting QB; they made the playoffs in 15 of those 19 years, going 13-14 in playoff games and playing in two Super Bowls, winning one.

Both QB?s missed a full year with injury; Colts were 4-12, 2-14 those two seasons.

12) Hard to keep a secret these days: Bears-Colts were playing in Indianapolis Saturday night when the news broke about Andrew Luck retiring; would be interesting to know who leaked the news. Made it extremely awkward with Luck standing on the sidelines while fans are checking their phones for information.

Around midnight, I?m watching TV and a commercial runs for NFL Sunday Ticket, and it is Luck and a Colts? fan wearing a blue #12 jersey. Awkward.

Later on, I?m watching a replay of the Broncos-Rams game and for a few minutes thats all they were talking about on the broadcast; Rams starters who weren?t playing were on the sidelines looking at their phones and talking, undoubtedly about this very surprising news.

(Yeah, I know; I watch too much TV)

11) I have one question about the Colts; do they retain Luck?s rights, and if so, for how long? Luck turns 30 next month; what if he decides in January that he misses football and he would like to play again? What happens then?

Luck is married to a woman who was a gymnast in Europe; what if he decides if traveling the world with her isn?t stimulating or fun enough? It is a fair question.

10) My point here is that I?m wondering if Luck could sit out a year or two, then declare himself a free agent when Tom Brady retires and go play for New England. If the Colts retain his rights then that would eliminate that hideous scenario.

9) Circa Sports in Las Vegas shifted their Colts? odds this way:
Colts to make playoffs: from YES -180 → NO -215
Colts to win AFC: from +700 → +2100

Colts to win Super Bowl:
From YES +1500 → YES +4500
From NO -2800 → NO -7800

8) Hawai?i 45, Arizona 38? Great ending at 2:20am Sunday morning to this exciting game in paradise; Arizona QB Tate scrambled 30+ yards trying to score the game-tying TD on the last play of the game, but was tackled on the 1-yard line as time ran out.

Arizona drove the ball 81 yards in 0:51 to try and tie the game, but they needed 82 yards.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Indians put 3B Jose Ramirez (hand) on the IL.
? Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval (elbow) is out for the year.
? Arizona put OF David Peralta on the IL.
? Cubs put P Derek Holland (wrist) on the IL.

6) Detroit Tigers recently had a 58-game stretch where they didn?t win consecutive games; since 1907, that is the 9th-longest streak in the major leagues.

5) One thing that was drummed into my head watching the Cardinal-Viking game Saturday; Minnesota has a depth problem at cornerback. Viking TV guys were doing the game and they mentioned it a lot. When home TV guys criticize the home team, you know there?s a problem.

4) Underrated weird baseball thing; Dodgers C Russell Martin has pitched in two games this year when LA had the lead, 18-5 and 14-1. Is their pitching staff that overworked?

3) Miami Marlins vs Philly this season: 9-7
Miami Marlins vs rest of NL East: 11-36

2) Remember Warrick Dunn, the running back for the Buccaneers?

Dunn?s mother was a New Orleans police officer who was shot/killed in the line of duty when Dunn was in high school. He?s used his platform as an NFL star to pay for the construction of 145 houses for single moms. 145 houses is a lot of money raised/donated.

1) This was SuperContest weekend at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; they got over the 2,000 mark in contestants, at $1,500 a pop. First place is expected to be over $1.5M? you pick five NFL games a week against the spread.

Other casinos also have contests; Golden Nugget has one where you pick seven games a week, but they can be college or pro games. Circa also has a contest.

If you like football and you like to gamble, a football weekend in Las Vegas should definitely be on your bucket list.

LEADING OFF: Harper returns to Phillies, Ram?rez has surgery
The Associated Press
Monday, August 26 2019

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

DADDY'S HOME

Bryce Harper is expected to return from paternity leave as the Phillies open a home series against struggling Pittsburgh. Philadelphia dropped two of three at last-place Miami without him, managing only four hits and never batting with a runner in scoring position during Sunday's defeat. Harper had been on a tear before taking a few days to be with his wife, Kayla, and their newborn son ? the couple's first child. Harper has nine homers in his past 17 games, batting .290 with a 1.139 OPS.

BAD BREAK

Cleveland third baseman Jos? Ram?rez is set to have surgery on his broken right hand. It's a potentially devastating injury for the Indians' playoff chances as they try to catch first-place Minnesota in the AL Central or capture a wild card. Ram?rez went on the injured list Sunday with a fractured hamate bone, an injury that typically takes more than a month to heal. There is no clear timetable for his return, but it's safe to assume Ramirez ? who has been on a tear at the plate ? won't be around down the stretch in September.

FLYIN' HIGH

The first-place Cardinals visit Milwaukee in another matchup between these NL Central contenders. St. Louis took two of three from the Brewers at home last week. Veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright (9-9, 4.51 ERA) is 7-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 19 career starts at Miller Park.

Coming off a four-game sweep of Colorado, the streaking Cardinals (71-58) have won seven of eight and 13 of 16 to move a season-high 13 games over .500. They are 2? games ahead of the second-place Cubs, their largest division lead since holding a three-game cushion on May 1.

Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.64) goes for the Brewers. Ryan Braun has hit safely in each of his last 17 starts, but Milwaukee placed reliever Jeremy Jeffress on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strained left hip.

SHORT STORY

The Yankees play at last-place Seattle and will check on the status of shortstop Didi Gregorius, who left Sunday's game at Dodger Stadium a couple of innings after getting hit by a pitch from Clayton Kershaw. Gregorius sustained a bruised right shoulder and was set to have X-rays taken at the ballpark.

HAVE STREAK, WILL TRAVEL

Josh Donaldson and the NL East-leading Braves, coming off a three-game sweep of the Mets in New York, look to extend their winning streak to a season-high nine games when they make a quick pit stop in Colorado for the makeup of an April snowout. Julio Teheran (8-8, 3.53 ERA) pitches at Coors Field against Tim Melville (1-0, 1.29). Teheran is 6-1 in 11 career starts vs. the Rockies. Right after that, the Braves head to Toronto to begin an interleague series with the Blue Jays. Donaldson has three homers in the past two games to give him 32 in his first season with Atlanta.

HELLO AGAIN

A's right-hander Homer Bailey (11-8, 5.06) faces the Royals for the first time in his career ? not that he's unfamiliar with Kauffman Stadium. Bailey opened the season with Kansas City, where he got himself back on track after going 1-14 with a 6.09 ERA with Cincinnati in 2018. The 33-year-old was 7-6 with a 4.80 ERA before being traded to Oakland in July, and he's allowed one run in 12 2/3 innings over his past two starts.

Made it extremely awkward with Luck standing on the sidelines while fans are checking their phones for information.

Around midnight, I’m watching TV and a commercial runs for NFL Sunday Ticket, and it is Luck and a Colts’ fan wearing a blue #12 jersey. Awkward.

Later on, I’m watching a replay of the Broncos-Rams game and for a few minutes thats all they were talking about on the broadcast; Rams starters who weren’t playing were on the sidelines looking at their phones and talking, undoubtedly about this very surprising news.

(Yeah, I know; I watch too much TV)

11) I have one question about the Colts; do they retain Luck’s rights, and if so, for how long? Luck turns 30 next month; what if he decides in January that he misses football and he would like to play again? What happens then?

Luck is married to a woman who was a gymnast in Europe; what if he decides if traveling the world with her isn’t stimulating or fun enough? It is a fair question.

10) My point here is that I’m wondering if Luck could sit out a year or two, then declare himself a free agent when Tom Brady retires and go play for New England. If the Colts retain his rights then that would eliminate that hideous scenario.

9) Circa Sports in Las Vegas shifted their Colts’ odds this way:
Colts to make playoffs: from YES -180 → NO -215
Colts to win AFC: from +700 → +2100

Colts to win Super Bowl:
From YES +1500 → YES +4500
From NO -2800 → NO -7800

8) Hawai’i 45, Arizona 38— Great ending at 2:20am Sunday morning to this exciting game in paradise; Arizona QB Tate scrambled 30+ yards trying to score the game-tying TD on the last play of the game, but was tackled on the 1-yard line as time ran out.

Arizona drove the ball 81 yards in 0:51 to try and tie the game, but they needed 82 yards.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Indians put 3B Jose Ramirez (hand) on the IL.
— Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval (elbow) is out for the year.
— Arizona put OF David Peralta on the IL.
— Cubs put P Derek Holland (wrist) on the IL.

6) Detroit Tigers recently had a 58-game stretch where they didn’t win consecutive games; since 1907, that is the 9th-longest streak in the major leagues.

5) One thing that was drummed into my head watching the Cardinal-Viking game Saturday; Minnesota has a depth problem at cornerback. Viking TV guys were doing the game and they mentioned it a lot. When home TV guys criticize the home team, you know there’s a problem.

Dunn’s mother was a New Orleans police officer who was shot/killed in the line of duty when Dunn was in high school. He’s used his platform as an NFL star to pay for the construction of 145 houses for single moms. 145 houses is a lot of money raised/donated.

1) This was SuperContest weekend at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; they got over the 2,000 mark in contestants, at $1,500 a pop. First place is expected to be over $1.5M— you pick five NFL games a week against the spread.

LEADING OFF: Harper returns to Phillies, Ram?*rez has surgery
August 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

DADDY'S HOME

Bryce Harper is expected to return from paternity leave as the Phillies open a home series against struggling Pittsburgh. Philadelphia dropped two of three at last-place Miami without him, managing only four hits and never batting with a runner in scoring position during Sunday's defeat. Harper had been on a tear before taking a few days to be with his wife, Kayla, and their newborn son - the couple's first child. Harper has nine homers in his past 17 games, batting .290 with a 1.139 OPS.

BAD BREAK

Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez is set to have surgery on his broken right hand. It's a potentially devastating injury for the Indians' playoff chances as they try to catch first-place Minnesota in the AL Central or capture a wild card. Ramirez went on the injured list Sunday with a fractured hamate bone, an injury that typically takes more than a month to heal. There is no clear timetable for his return, but it's safe to assume Ramirez - who has been on a tear at the plate - won't be around down the stretch in September.

They are 2+ games ahead of the second-place Cubs, their largest division lead since holding a three-game cushion on May 1.

HELLO AGAIN

A's right-hander Homer Bailey (11-8, 5.06) faces the Royals for the first time in his career - not that he's unfamiliar with Kauffman Stadium.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (9-6, 2.92 ERA, $707):
The veteran right-hander is having a career year in Cincy, recording a WHIP of 1.12 and holding opposing hitters to a BA of .206. He's arguably been the best MLB pitcher this month, going 3-0 while allowing just a single run and fanning 34 batters through 24 innings over four starts. The Reds are a perfect 6-0 in his last six starts.

Gray will take to the mound for the Reds in the first game of their four-game series with the Marlins. The Marlins are dead-last in the majors in OPS and will start Pablo Lopez (5-5, 4.23 ERA) who returns from the IL after having not pitched since June 15. The Reds are -177 road faves and the O/U is installed at 7.5.

SLUMPING

Joe Musgrove, Pittsburgh Pirates (8-12, 4.74 ERA, $-72):
After such a promising start to his season, Musgrove has crashed back to earth. He's had an especially awful August, going 0-3 through four starts with a 7.71 ERA and a WHIP of 1.52.

Today, Musgrove and the Pirates are on the road against in-state rivals Philadelphia. The Pirates are 5-12 in Musgrove's last 17 starts on the road and are 2-8 in their previous 10 games versus the Phillies.

Philadelphia will give the ball to the recently acquired Jason Vargas who is 6-6 with a 3.99 ERA on the season, almost identical to the 3.91 ERA he has recorded through four outings as a Philly.

3 STRIKES

BREWERS STILL IN THE RACE

The Brewers are 4.5 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central lead but they'll need to start winning if they want to gain ground. They begin their three-game home set against the Cardinals today with Gio Gonzales on the mound.

Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 3.64 ERA but don't let that record fool you, Gonzalez has gotten a decent workload this season with 12 starts. The Brewers are 9-1 in Gonzalez's last 10 starts at home and are 5-2 versus the Cardinals in Milwaukee this season.

The Cards will start Adam Wainwright who is 3-6 with a 6.64 ERA and .294 BAA on the road. St. Louis is 0-7 in Wainwright's last seven road starts versus a team with a winning record. The Brewers are -136 favourites to win tonight, and are +500 to win the NL Central.

GOING BACK TO KANSAS CITY

Homer Bailey spent his first 18 starts of the season as a member of the Royals and will make his return to Kansas City today as a member of the Oakland A's. Bailey went from one of the worst teams in the league to a squad that's thick in the middle of the wildcard hunt, and he's managed to have some success with Oakland.

Although Bailey has been demolished in two of his seven starts with the A's, he's been very effective in the other five. Over his last two outings he's allowed nine hits and just one run over 12 2-3 innings versus the Yankees and Giants. Bailey and the A's are -150 favorites today but they could have their work cut out for them against Brad Keller. The Royals right-hander is 4-5 with a 3.60 ERA and an impressive BAA of .207 at home.

LOOK TO THE OVER

Two of the best Over bets in the majors tangle in Seattle with the Yankees visiting the Mariners. The Mariners are 77-49-5 O/U this season and have hit the Over in five of their last six games.

The Yankees are 39-19-3 O/U in away games and will start J.A. Happ who is 10-8 with a 5.58 ERA. Happ has been especially awful this month, going 2-2 with a 7.78 ERA and a WHIP of 1.53. The Over XX might seem high, especially at pitcher friendly T-Mobile Park, but it still looks like an intriguing play with these two teams. The home side is a -127 favorite.

Rodriguez homers in 11th to lift Phillies over Pirates 6-5
August 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Sean Rodriguez lined a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

Josh Bell hit a solo homer off Philadelphia closer Hector Neris to tie it at 5 in the ninth after Corey Dickerson hit a two-run shot against his former team in the eighth to give the Phillies a one-run lead.

But after stranding five runners in the ninth and 10th, the Phillies won it when Rodriguez went deep against Michael Feliz (2-4) for his fourth career walk-off homer. Rodriguez was in a 1-for-21 slump before he connected.

Philadelphia moved within a game of the idle Cubs for the second NL wild card.

Bryce Harper homered with two outs in the eighth in his first game back from paternity leave to cut it to 4-3. After J.T. Realmuto's infield single, Dickerson ripped one out to put the Phillies ahead 5-4.

Dickerson, acquired from the Pirates before the July 31 trade deadline, has 21 RBIs in 19 games for the Phillies.

Brad Miller also had a two-run shot for Philadelphia. Mike Morin (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.

CARDINALS 12, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Marcell Ozuna's bases-loaded double keyed a six-run second inning and surging St. Louis pounded out a victory over Milwaukee.

The Cardinals, who have won five straight, jumped on starter Gio Gonzalez (2-2) for eight runs in the first two innings en route to their 14th victory in 17 games.

Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong each homered and drove in three runs for St. Louis, which moved a season-high 14 games above .500. The Cardinals extended their NL Central lead to three games over the Cubs. The third-place Brewers dropped 5+ back.

Despite being staked to a 9-1 lead, starter Adam Wainwright lasted just 3 2/3 innings, throwing 90 pitches. He allowed two runs on six hits with three walks.

John Gant (9-0) relieved Wainwright and struck out three in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

ATHLETICS 19, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Marcus Semien homered, tripled and drove in a career-high seven runs as Oakland set season highs for runs and hits in a rout of Kansas City.

Jurickson Profar, Matt Chapman and Khris Davis also went deep for the Athletics, who are locked in a tight race with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the two American League wild cards. Josh Phegley drove in three runs and scored three times. Four players had three hits and every starter got at least one as Oakland finished with 22.

Seth Brown singled in the first two at-bats of his big league career, scored twice and drove in a run.

Homer Bailey (12-8) threw six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits, to beat his former team.

Oakland scored five runs in both the second and third, backed by Semien's big hits.

Royals starter Brad Keller (7-14) lasted just 1 1/3 innings, exiting after Semien's bases-loaded triple put Oakland up 5-0.

ROCKIES 3, BRAVES 1

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Colorado over Atlanta, ending the Braves' eight-game winning streak.

McMahon drove a fastball from Jerry Blevins just over the scoreboard in right field for the second game-ending homer of his career. Nolan Arenado started the inning with a walk against Anthony Swarzak (1-2).

Jairo Diaz (5-3) blew a save in the ninth but got the win as the Rockies stopped a four-game skid.

It was a makeup from an April 10 game postponed due to inclement weather, forcing Atlanta to crisscross the country.

REDS 6, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Sonny Gray pitched into the seventh inning, Freddy Galvis drove in four runs and Cincinnati stopped a three-game slide.

Gray (10-6) walked five, but limited Miami to two runs and two hits. The right-hander improved to 4-0 in August, allowing three runs in five starts.

Galvis had three hits and Eugenio Suarez hit his 36th homer for the Reds.

Neil Walker and Jorge Alfaro homered for the Marlins. Pablo Lopez (5-6) allowed four runs in five innings.

Quote of the Day
?He was like smiling at the end. That?s what helped me gain clarity and understand the situation, seeing him smile. I wish him the best. He knows that and we?ll talk longer than the days of either of our football careers. You know, he seemed happy and that?s all that really matters.?
Colts? QB Jacoby Brissett, talking about Andrew Luck

Tuesday?s quiz
Who was the Falcons? coach the first time they played in the Super Bowl?

Monday?s quiz
Atlanta Falcons are 0-2 in Super Bowls; they lost to Denver, New England.

Sunday?s quiz
Mike Shula was football coach at Alabama before Nick Saban.

*********************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??..

13) NFL scouting isn?t easy; front office types make big money, with their decisions largely deciding whether teams win or lose.

With that in mind, here are QB?s taken in the 2012 NFL Draft:
Round 1 (1st pick): A. Luck ? retired, played 86 games
1 (2): Robert Griffin III- Ravens? backup
1 (8): Ryan Tannehill ? Titans? backup
1 (22): Brandon Weeden ? out of football
Round 2 (57): Brock Osweiler ? out of football

3 (75): Russell Wilson ? Super Bowl champ
3 (88): Nick Foles ? Super Bowl MVP
4 (102): Kirk Cousins ? Vikings? starter, makes $28M a year

Undrafted: Case Keenum? Redskins? starter
Kellen Moore- Cowboys? offensive coordinator

12) Golfers Dustin Johnson/Lucas Glover tied for last at the TOUR Championship Sunday; they both went home wth a check for $400,000. Pretty solid consolation prize.

11) Robbie Ray threw five shutout innings in Arizona?s 5-2 win in Milwaukee Sunday; he faced 21 batters, threw 103 pitches, which is an awful lot for a guy who didn?t allow a run. Usually the average pitches per batter is 3.6 or 3.7, not 5.0+.

10) Major League ballfields need more 8-foot high outfield fences; the most exciting play in baseball is an outfielder trying to rob the hitter of a home run.

9) Off the top of my bald head, I?m thinking that the Broncos, Colts, Vikings will all be bucking the NFL?s pass-happy trend and will try to run the ball more this season.

Vic Fangio and Mike Zimmer are defensive coaches; defensive guys like to run the ball to protect their defense. Indianapolis is breaking Jacoby Brissett in as the new QB; they?ll try and lighten his load by depending on their improved offensive line and moving the ball on the ground.

8) Remember the movie Ferris Bueller?s Day Off and the kid with the Detroit Red Wings? jersey who was Ferris? friend? Haven?t seen that actor in 33 years that I know of, but he showed up on my TV in the HBO series Succession, which is about a horrendous bunch of rich people.

He wears a suit now, instead of the Gordie Howe jersey.

7) Baseball stuff:
? A?s DFA?d OF Nick Martini, brought up OF Seth Brown from AAA.
? A?s also put OF Stephen Piscotty (ankle) on the IL.

6) Why would FOX hire Urban Meyer as a studio analyst? The man has no personality, seems incapable of humor. He was awful analyzing games on ESPN. Don?t understand this.

5) I wonder if dogs enjoy having their pictures taken as much as it looks like they?re enjoying it.

4) Kansas City Chiefs signed QB Matt Moore to back up Patrick Mahomes; Chad Henne broke his ankle last weekend, so KC needed a solid backup, and Moore is that.

3) Over the last 25 months:
? Baltimore Ravens are 12-0 in exhibition games, Atlanta is 0-12.
? Ravens are 19-14 in regular season/playoffs; Atlanta is 18-16.

Some teams just try harder to win preseason games.

2) We talk about this too much now: ?If I ain?t startin?, then I?ll be departin??..??

Sophomore QB Jake Haener wasn?t going to be Washington?s starter this year, so he will now transfer. Haener is from Danville, CA; his mom and grandfather both went to college at Washington, but he will leave the Huskies, sit this year out and be eligible to play wherever he goes in both 2020 and 2021. Hard to impress NFL scouts by sitting on the bench.

Washington?s new QB is Jacob Eason, who bolted to Seattle because he didn?t win the starting job at Georgia (sound familiar?)

1) Turns out that OJ Simpson is in a fantasy football league, and he drafted Andrew Luck an hour before the retirement story broke. Whoops.

LEADING OFF: Verlander vs Morton, Cubs and Mets get wild
August 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

PAIR OF ACES

Former teammates and 2019 All-Stars square off in a prime pitching matchup when Charlie Morton (13-5, 2.85 ERA) and the Rays face Justin Verlander (15-5, 2.77) in Houston. With the Rays locked in a close wild-card race and the Astros leading the AL West, it's a potential October preview. Verlander, first in the majors with 239 strikeouts, fanned 11 last time out and went the distance on a two-hitter in a 2-1 loss to Detroit. He has seven straight double-digit strikeout games. Morton spent the past two years with the Astros and helped them win the 2017 World Series.

WILD IN THE CITI

Kyle Schwarber and the Cubs visit the Mets in the opener of a pivotal three-game series at Citi Field. New York trails Chicago by two games for the second NL wild card. Both teams were off Monday after getting swept at home last weekend - the Mets by Atlanta, the Cubs by Washington. Chicago hopes to have Anthony Rizzo back in the lineup. The first baseman left Saturday's game with tightness in his back and sat out Sunday. Yu Darvish (4-6, 4.43 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against Marcus Stroman (7-11, 3.18), who exited his previous start with left hamstring tightness.

BIG IN JAPAN

Yusei Kikuchi and Masahiro Tanaka face each other for the first time in the majors when the Seattle Mariners host the AL East-leading New York Yankees. The 28-year-old Kikuchi is 5-8 with a 5.19 ERA in his first big league season, but he threw a two-hitter against Toronto in his last start on Aug. 18. He calls the matchup with his Japanese countryman ''a very special game and moment for me.'' The 30-year-old Tanaka has won two of his past three decisions but dropped his last outing against Oakland.

THROWING ZEROS

All-Star right-hander Lucas Giolito faces AL Central-leading Minnesota again when the Chicago White Sox host the Twins in the opener of a three-game series. Giolito struck out 12 while tossing a three-hitter in a 4-0 victory at Minnesota last Wednesday. He is 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in four August starts, striking out 44 batters in 27 innings. Michael Pineda seeks his third straight win for the Twins.

Big City Slams

The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets kick off a three-game set at Citi Field on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET, and it could be a potential playoff series preview. The Cubs will roll out RHP Yu Darvish, while the Mets counter with RHP Marcus Stroman, their key acquisitions at the Major League Baseball trade deadline.

Darvish enters with a 4-6 record, 4.43 ERA and .297 opponent batting average. However, he has 176 strikeouts across 144 1/3 innings, so he still has nasty stuff despite his rather pedestrian numbers in other areas. The veteran righty has actually been better on the road, going 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 74 1/3 innings on the road, while posting a 2-3 mark, 5.14 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 70 innings in the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field.

The Mets lost Stroman early to a tight left hamstring in his most recent start, but he is expected to be fine to start Tuesday. New York is a perfect 4-0 in his four outings since he joined the team at the trade deadline in late July, although he has just one win and three no-decisions. He certainly has enjoyed the run support, as the Mets are averaging 7.0 runs per game in his four outings in blue and orange so far.

The Cubs enter 1-6 across their past seven games against teams with a winning overall record, and they're 0-6 in the past six against National League clubs. They're also just 1-4 in Darvish's past five on the road against winning sides, while going 0-5 in his past five road outings overall. They're also just 1-6 in his past seven when working on five days of rest. The Mets are 11-2 in the past 13 at home vs. RHP, while hitting in 24 of the past 29 against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also 13-4 in the past 17 at home, and 21-8 across the past 29 games overall.

In this series, Chicago has won four in a row in Queens, while winning 11 of the previous 14 matchups. In addition, the over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in this series.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Aug. 27

The Indians travel across Lake Erie to meet the Tigers at Comerica Park, and this series hasn't really been close in recent years. Cleveland has won five of the past six on the road, although a visit to Motown might be the elixir to cure their ills. The Indians are 52-17 in the past 69 battles between these American League Central Division foes, while going 25-10 in the past 35 trips to the Motor City. The Tigers are 0-4 in RHP Spencer Turnbull's past four starts against the Indians, too.

The Rays use RHP Charlie Morton against Astros RHP Justin Verlander in a possible pitcher's duel. Tampa streaks in with 11 wins in the past 14 on the road, and they're 4-0 in the past four against teams with a winning overall mark. In addition, they're 10-4 in Morton's past 14 assignments on the road, while going 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. For the Astros, they're 41-13 in the past 53 at home, and 44-16 in the past 60 at the 'Juice Box', while connecting in 20 of the past 28 against right-handed starting pitchers.

The Astros are also 12-5 in Verlander's past 17 home outings, while connecting in 16 of his past 21 starts while working on five days of rest. They're also 7-2 in the past nine during Game 1 of a new series, too, with Verlander on the bump. Tampa Bay has dominated this series recently, winning six of the past seven. The under is 4-1 in the past five meetings in Houston, while going 36-17-3 in the past 56 meetings overall in this series.

Weather Report
The Twins and White Sox will be battling an 11-14 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley at Guaranteed Rate Field on the south side of Chicago. It will be the opposite in the Mile High City, as the Red Sox and Rockies deal with a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing from right field to home plate. The good news is that precipitation won't be a problem at any of the outdoor MLB venues.

Wednesday, Aug. 28

LHP James Paxton works for the Yankees against his former team, the Seattle Mariners. They counter with former Yankees prospect LHP Justus Sheffield. The Yankees are 5-0 in the past five road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 19-7 in their past 26 overall vs. LHP. The Yankees have cashed in five in a row with Paxton on the mound, and they're 9-2 in his past 11 when working on four days of rest. The Yanks enter Tuesday's game with 22 wins in the past 28 games at T-Mobile Park, and they're 40-19 in the past 59 overall in the series.

Twins RHP Jake Odorizzi and White Sox LHP Ross Detwiler will do battle at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chitown on Hump Day. The Twins are 8-2 in the past 10 road outings by Odorizzi, while going 20-8 over his past 28 starts overall. They're also 16-5 in Odorizzi's past 21 starts against teams with a losing overall record and 6-2 in his past eight inside the division. For the White Sox, while they're 9-21 in the past 30 at home against teams with a road winning percentage over .600, they have won four of the past five home outings with Detwiler on the bump. The Twins have won 12 of the past 17 outings in this series, with the under going 4-0 in Odorizzi's past four starts against the Pale Hose.

Rangers RHP Ariel Jurado will do battle with LHP Patrick Sandoval of the Angels in Anaheim. The Rangers have had trouble in Jurado's starts lately, going 1-4 in his past five on the road, 0-5 in his past five starts overall and 1-5 in his past six inside the division. Texas is also just 16-35 in the past 51 road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. For the Angels, they are looking to maintain their dominance at home against the Rangers, as they entered the series with a 10-2 mark in the past 12 in Anaheim against Texas.

Weather Report
For Wednesday's game, the Indians and Tigers will be battling a 12-15 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field. The Twins and White Sox will also see a 12-15 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley for the second consecutive evening. Also like Tuesday, just two MLB venues will be affected by winds, and none will see precipitation chances over 20 percent.
