Verlander pitches 3rd no-hitter, Astros beat Blue Jays 2-0
September 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Justin Verlander pitched his third career no-hitter, punctuating a dominant season with an overpowering performance to lead the Houston Astros past the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 on Sunday.

Verlander struck out 14 and allowed just one runner, walking Cavan Biggio with one out in the first inning.

Verlander also became the first pitcher to throw two no-hitters as a visitor in the same park - he also threw one at Rogers Centre in 2011 with Detroit. His other no-no was in 2007 for the Tigers against Milwaukee.

The 36-year-old Verlander joined Nolan Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four) and Bob Feller, Cy Young and Larry Corcoran (three) in rarefied air on the no-hitter list.

Verlander threw a season-high 120 pitches, mixing a fastball that reached the upper 90s mph with a sharp curve.

Verlander (17-5) is tied for the big league lead in wins. He tops the majors in strikeouts (257) and innings (193) and leads the AL with a 2.56 ERA.

Verlander retired the last 26 hitters in a row. But the game was scoreless going into the last inning - according to baseball rules, Verlander needed to pitch a complete game to get credit for a no-hitter.

That's when Canadian-born rookie Abraham Toro stepped up for the AL West leaders. The Astros newcomer hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning off Ken Giles (2-3) that cleared the way for Verlander to complete the no-hitter.

PHILLIES 5, METS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Kingery snapped an eighth-inning tie with a three-run double and Philadelphia beat New York to avoid a three-game sweep.

Brad Miller hit a solo homer and a double for the Phillies, who pulled within 2+ games of the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card.

Pete Alonso hit his 43rd homer and Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 25 consecutive games with a fourth-inning double for the Mets, who are four games behind the Cubs.

Daniel Zamora (0-1), who was just recalled from the minors, took the loss.

Hector Neris (3-5) got the final five outs for Philadelphia.

Phillies starter Zach Eflin pitched seven stellar innings, allowing only Alonso's first-inning homer and two other hits.

Mets starter Marcus Stroman also pitched well, giving up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks in six-plus innings.

YANKEES 5, ATHLETICS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Brett Gardner and pinch-hitter Mike Ford hit back-to-back homers off A's closer Liam Hendriks, and New York rallied from four runs down and walked off for the second straight game.

Gardner led off the ninth with a shot to right off Hendriks (4-2) and Ford followed with his 10th homer into the Yankees bullpen in right-center.

A's left-hander Sean Manaea pitched one-hit ball over five innings in his first start since shoulder surgery last September, and Oakland led 4-0 after 7 1/2 innings.

Adam Ottavino (6-4) pitched a scoreless inning to win.

TWINS 8, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jake Cave and Nelson Cruz each drove in two runs and Minnesota beat Detroit.

The Twins increased their lead in the AL Central to 5 + games over Cleveland.

Detroit has lost seven of eight and still needs four wins at Comerica Park to avoid becoming the first big league team to lose 60 games at home in a season.

Cave's two-run single highlighted a five-run second inning.

Michael Pineda (11-5) got the win, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out nine.

Spencer Turnbull (3-14) took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

RAYS 8, INDIANS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Carlos Carrasco made his return to the mound from leukemia Sunday and the Cleveland pitcher was applauded by both teams in a touching scene Tampa Bay victory.

The right-hander entered in the seventh inning for his first major league appearance since being diagnosed with a treatable form of leukemia in June.

Charlie Morton earned his 14th win and Travis d'Arnaud had two RBIs off the bench as Tampa Bay swept a critical series between postseason contenders.

Morton (14-6) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight, walked three and threw a season-high 108 pitches.

Nate Lowe hit a two-run homer for the Rays, who moved a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the top AL wild card. Indians starter Adam Plutko (6-4) allowed four runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ryan Zimmerman celebrated his return from the injured list with one of Washington's four home runs and the Nationals completed a series sweep of Miami.

Zimmerman, who was reinstated Sunday after missing 36 games with Plantar Fasciitis in his right foot, connected for a two-run shot. Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon each homered for the second consecutive game for Washington, while Yan Gomes also had a home run.

Rendon set a new Nationals (2005-present) single-season record for RBIs with 111. Vladimir Guerrero holds the franchise record of 131 set in 1999 when the team was in Montreal.

Washington, the NL wild card leader, has won four straight and nine of 10.

Nationals starter Patrick Corbin (11-6) allowed three runs on three hits over six innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

Starlin Castro homered for Miami, which saw its franchise-record road losing streak extend to 15 games.

Starter Caleb Smith (8-9) gave up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.

CARDINALS 4, REDS 3, 1ST GAME

REDS 5, CARDINALS 3, 2ND GAME

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Nick Senzel and Phillip Ervin hit solo home runs, Luis Castillo pitched six effective innings and Cincinnati Reds beat St. Louis in the nightcap to split a doubleheader and end a four-game losing streak.

With the 4-3 win in the first game and the Chicago Cubs' 4-0 loss to Milwaukee, the Cardinals gained a half game in the NL Central to increase their division lead to three games. St. Louis has only lost two of its past 11 games and is 12-3 in its past 15.

Castillo (14-5) lasted six innings, giving up three runs and five hits with three walks. He struck out eight as the Reds' pitchers had 11 in the game.

Daniel Ponce de Leon (1-2) allowed four runs - three earned - and five hits with a walk, and a hit batter in four-plus innings.

The Cardinals Andrew Knizer hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot that was part of a three-run third for St. Louis. Kolten Wong had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

In the first game, Harrison Bader continued his hit parade with a game-ending single to lift the Cardinals to the win.

Bader, facing five infielders with no one out, lofted a fly ball off Michael Lorenzen (0-4) to deep right field to bring in pinch-runner Tyler O'Neill.

Eugenio Suarez homered for the Reds.

Carlos Martinez (4-2) picked up the victory by striking out the side in the ninth on 13 pitches.

ROYALS 6, ORIOLES 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Adalberto Mondesi matched a career high with four hits and stole three bases in his return from the injured list, leading Kansas City past Baltimore.

Meibrys Viloria drove in the go-ahead run for the Royals with a two-out single in the seventh inning. Kansas City took two of three in a series.

Mondesi led off the seventh with his third hit and stole second. With two outs, Alex Gordon drove him in with a tying double, and Gordon scored on Viloria's single to make it 5-4.

Whit Merrifield added a solo homer in the eighth.

Kevin McCarthy (3-2) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win. Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances.

Paul Fry (1-7) took the loss.

BREWERS 4, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer off Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning, and Milwaukee shut out Chicago for the second straight game.

Milwaukee took two of three in the weekend series to pull within three games of Chicago for the second NL wild card.

After Gio Gonzalez walked four in three hitless innings, Jay Jackson (1-0) got six outs for his first major league win. Drew Pomeranz got two big outs in the eighth before Josh Hader finished the four-hitter.

Tyler Chatwood (5-3) took the loss.

The Cubs left nine runners on base and went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

MARINERS 11, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Kyle Seager, Tom Murphy and Daniel Vogelbach hit home runs and Seattle beat Texas.

Seager sealed the victory with a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

Yusei Kikuchi (6-9) benefited from Seattle's four first-inning runs. Dee Gordon chased Brett Martin (1-3) from the game after just two outs with a two-run single.

Kikuchi allowed three runs in five innings. He has exceeded five innings in only one of his last six starts.

The teams split the four-game set. Seattle won the season series 12-7.

PIRATES 6, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Steven Brault hit his first major league homer and pitched effectively into the seventh inning to lead Pittsburgh over Colorado for a four-game sweep.

Adam Frazier homered on the first pitch of the game, the second straight day the Pirates did that.

Brault (4-3) allowed only one hit until Nolan Arenado lined a two-out fastball into the seats in left field in the sixth for his 35th home run. Brault left in the seventh when the Rockies got a run on two hits and an error, but Richard Rodriguez got out of the jam by fanning Trevor Story.

Brault socked a solo homer that made it 3-1 in the top of the seventh. He allowed just one earned run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Josh Bell and Colin Moran each hit an RBI single for the Pirates. Bryan Reynolds had three hits.

Jeff Hoffman (1-5) took the loss.

PADRES 8, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ty France homered twice, Greg Garcia hit a leadoff drive and San Diego beat San Francisco as Giants fans gave one more cheer for Pablo Sandoval.

Sandoval grounded out as a pinch-hitter in what could be his final game with the Giants. The 33-year-old former World Series MVP was activated off the injured list earlier in the day for a final at-bat under retiring manager Bruce Bochy.

Sandoval will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow Wednesday.

Eric Hosmer doubled, singled and tripled in his first three at-bats for San Diego. With a chance at the cycle, he walked in the seventh inning and struck out in the ninth.

Eric Lauer (8-8) beat the Giants for the third time this season. He struck out nine and allowed four runs in six innings.

Kevin Pillar hit his 20th home run for San Francisco. Evan Longoria added a two-run shot.

Jeff Samardzija (9-11) took the loss.

RED SOX 4, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Xander Bogaerts had three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs as the Boston beat Los Angeles.

J.D. Martinez also went deep for the Red Sox, who went 6-2 on the trip and have won 11 of their last 15 to get within five games of the second AL wild card.

Albert Pujols had an RBI double in the third inning for his 3,185th career hit, passing Cal Ripken Jr. for 14th place. Justin Upton homered in the eighth.

Bogaerts and Martinez went back-to-back in the third.

Ryan Weber (2-2), the third of six Boston pitchers, gave up one hit and a walk in two innings to get the win.

Andrew Heaney (3-4) went five innings and permitted four runs on seven hits.

DODGERS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3, 11 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Cody Bellinger hit a tying homer in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Joc Pederson went deep in the 11th and Los Angeles prevented a four-game sweep with a win over Arizona.

In a frightening scene, Dodgers reliever Dustin May was hit in the head by a line drive and stayed down for a few anxious moments in the middle of a hushed ballpark. But the pitcher ultimately stood up, was checked by a trainer and walked off the field without help.

Russell Martin and David Freese also hit solo shots for the NL West leaders, who stopped Arizona's six-game winning streak. Los Angeles raised its season total to 238 homers, a franchise record.

Pederson led off the 11th and sent a full-count pitch from Taylor Clarke (4-5) high into the right field seats for his 28th home run. Bellinger's 43rd of the year came with one out in the ninth off Andrew Chafin.

Pedro Baez got three outs for his first save of the season.

Casey Sadler (4-0) earned the win. Taylor Clarke (4-5) took the loss.

BRAVES 5, WHITE SOX 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman homered twice off All-Star Lucas Giolito and drove in five runs, providing all the offense for Atlanta against Chicago.

The Braves have won four straight are 12-2 since Aug. 16, moving 30 games over .500 for the first time since 2013. They have won a season-best nine straight home games to stay 5+ games ahead in the NL East.

The White Sox have lost six in a row.

Giolito (14-8) allowed four runs and four hits.

Julio Teheran (9-8) gave up two runs and three hits in six innings.

Monday?s 6-pack
? Oklahoma 49, Houston 31? Hurts threw for 332 yards, ran for 176 more.
? Dodgers 4, Arizona 3 (11)? Peterson homered in the 11th.
? Brewers 4, Cubs 0? Chicago was blanked the last two days.
? USC QB JT Daniels (torn ACL) is out for the season.
? QB Kyle Lauletta was signed to the Eagles? practice squad.
? Only 12 major league games on Labor Day; why?

Quote of the Day
?Calling it an`upset? doesn?t do it justice. This was the worst loss in the modern era of Tennessee football.?
Knoxville News Sentinel columnist John Adams, talking about Tennessee?s loss Saturday

Monday?s quiz
How many no-hitters did Nolan Ryan throw in his career?

Sunday?s quiz
Drew Bledsoe was New England?s starting QB before Tom Brady took over.

Saturday?s quiz
Raiders? backup QB Mike Glennon replaced Russell Wilson at NC State when Wilson transferred to Wisconsin before his senior year.

********************************************************

Monday?s List of 13: Happy Labor Day, everyone??.

13) In 2017, Giants drafted QB Davis Webb in 3rd round, cut him the next season.

In 2018, Giants drafted QB Kyle Lauletta in 4th round, cut him the next season.

Lauletta was 0-5 passing LY, Webb never played for the Giants.

They drafted QB Daniel Jones in the first round this year, but he is stuck behind 38-year old Eli Manning, whose W-L record the last six years is 38-57.

How is this not total organizational malpractice?

Joe Montana finished his career with the Chiefs.
Johnny Unitas finished his career with the Chargers.
Joe Namath finished his career with the Rams.
Peyton Manning finished his career with the Broncos. It happens.

12) Friday night/Saturday morning in Anaheim, Mookie Betts became the first player in major league history to hit a leadoff homer and also homer in the 15th inning or later of the same game. Boston won the game 7-6, despite at one point having 20 hitters in a row retired by Angel pitchers.

11) The guy that bought the Kansas City Royals for $1B already owns 30% of the Indians; he obviously has to sell that piece, so say the Indians are worth $1.4B (they have to be worth more than the Royals are), that means he has $420M coming in, so really he is only laying out $580M for the 100% of the Royals. It must be fun to be really rich.

Except of course, for all the parasites who pretend they?re your friends??..lol

10) Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has finished chemotherapy and is back at work; the 79-year old Trebek will be hosting Jeopardy!?s 35th season this fall.

9) You figured this news would get dumped on a Friday, and it did, and on a holiday weekend; Tyler Skaggs? autopsy results:

?The cause of death is listed as a mixture of ?alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone intoxication with terminal aspiration of gastric contents?? If you watch CSI, you know what this means in English, he choked to death.

27-year old athletes don?t just die; very sad. Hopefully he can rest in peace.

8) Tennessee paid Georgia State $950,000 to come to Knoxville to open the season against the Vols; when you get paid like that, you?re supposed to???..lose.

Georgia State upset Tennessee 38-30 on a rough day for the SEC, where five of their teams lost non-conference games, including Missouri losing as an 18-point favorite at Wyoming.

7) Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Miami?s opener against the Ravens; he?ll become the first QB ever to throw a pass for eight different NFL teams (six teams in last eight years).

6) Trivia: Longest at-bat in major leagues this year goes to Philly catcher JT Realmuto, who had a 16-pitch at-bat vs Miami?s Caleb Smith back in April.

5) I feel old typing this: former Lakers star James Worthy had a knee replacement last week.

4) Geno Smith beat Paxton Lynch out to be Russell Wilson?s backup in Seattle.

3) IUPUI basketball coach Jason Gardner quit his job Tuesday, two days after he was arrested for reportedly being found intoxicated and asleep behind the wheel of a car.

Jaguars went 16-17 LY in Gardner?s 5th year as coach, their best record since 2011. As of yet, no interim/replacement has been named.

2) Rams led NFL with five players they cut getting claimed off waivers, New England had four, Bills and Ravens three each.

Arizona Cardinals claimed five players other teams cut; Jets claimed four.

Miami Dolphins put 27 players on waivers; none were claimed by any NFL team. No bueno.

1) Astros 2, Blue Jays 0? Justin Verlander becomes the sixth pitcher to throw 3+ no-hitters; two of his three were in Toronto.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Ryan Yarbrough, Tampa Bay Rays (11-3, 3.36 ERA, $-14):
Yarbrough has also contributed to the Rays excellent bullpen, throwing in 14 games as a reliever, but when given starts he's actually eaten up a decent amount of innings. In nine starts this season he's logged at least six innings in eight of them.

His last four appeances have all been as a starter and he's been very impressive with a 1.42 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 28 strikeouts over 25 1-3 innings.

This afternoon Yarbrough and the Rays are -300 favorites at home against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are 5-16 in their last 21 games in Tampa Bay and will have Asher Wojciechowski and his 5.12 ERA on the mound.

SLUMPING

Ross Detwiler, Chicago White Sox (2-4, 6.45 ERA, $250):
Detwiler is another pitcher who is sometimes used as a starter and sometimes as a reliever. But while Yarbrough is effective in both roles, Detwiler is not good at either; he has a 5.31 ERA as a starter and a 9.95 ERA in relief. In his last five outings (which includes three starts) he has a 8.50 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP.

Detwiler and the White Sox are on the road in Cleveland tonight as +180 underdogs. The White Sox have lost six games in a row and will be going up against an Indians team that is 16-7 over their previous 23 home contests. The O/U is installed at 10.

Mike Minor, Rangers deal Yankees 1st shutout in 221 games
September 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Mike Minor and two relievers became the first pitchers in 221 tries to shut out the Yankees, helping the Texas Rangers beat New York 7-0 Monday.

The Yankees had the second-longest streak without being blanked since at least 1900 behind a 308-game stretch by the Babe Ruth-led Yankees from 1931-33. New York was previously shut out June 30, 2018, by Chris Sale and the Red Sox.

Jose Trevino, Delino DeShields and Shin-Soo Choo homered to back Minor (12-8), who allowed five hits over 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out five, walked one and threw 111 pitches before being pulled with two on in the eighth.

Shawn Kelley replaced Minor and retired DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge to end the eighth. Emmanuel Clase shut down the heart of the order in the ninth to stop New York's string of 220 straight games with a run.

Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (10-8) grinded through six innings of two-run ball. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out five.

The Yankees' scoring streak nearly fell Sunday when they trailed Oakland 4-0 after 7 1/2 innings, but New York rallied and won 5-4 on Mike Ford's game-ending solo homer in the ninth.

ASTROS 3, BREWERS 2, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - George Springer's home run in the 10th inning, which followed a game-tying homer by Christian Yelich in the ninth, lifted Houston over Milwaukee.

The long balls overshadowed a 14-strikeout performance by Astros starter Gerrit Cole.

With Houston leading 2-1, Yelich led off the ninth with his 43rd home run of the season, a solo shot on an 0-2 pitch from reliever Roberto Osuna (4-3).

Osuna later committed a throwing error that left runners at first and second. But he escaped with an inning-ending strikeout of pinch-hitter Travis Shaw.

Springer's own solo blast, his 30th of the season, came off reliever Junior Guerra (8-5) to start the 10th. Yordan Alvarez also homered for Houston.

Houston has won 12 of its last 15 games.

METS 7, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Noah Syndergaard struck out 10 while allowing three hits over seven shutout innings and Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer as New York topped Washington.

The loss ended Washington's four-game winning streak and denied the Nationals from moving 20 games over .500 for the first time this season.

Syndergaard (10-7) allowed a leadoff single to Trea Turner, then retired the next 16 batters in his first start since yielding a career-high 10 runs against the Cubs on Wednesday. It was Syndergaard's third 10-strikeout performance of the season and the 17th of his career.

Joe Ross (3-4) allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Washington avoided the shutout when former Met Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-out, three-run homer in the ninth off reliever Tyler Bashlor.

RAYS 5, ORIOLES 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tommy Pham hit an RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning and Tampa Bay won its fifth straight game.

The Rays held their narrow lead atop the AL wild-card race.

Pham's third hit of the game came off Dillon Tate (0-1) after Joey Wendle walked with one out and moved up on a grounder. He also had a two-run double.

Colin Poche (4-4) pitched one inning for the win.

Austin Meadows hit his 25th homer, a two-run drive off Asher Wojciechowski, put the Rays up 2-0 in the third. Pham's double made it 4-0 in the fifth.

Hanser Alberto homered for Baltimore.

TWINS 4, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Max Kepler's two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning lifted AL Central-leading Minnesota.

Trailing 3-2, Minnesota started the eighth with two singles off Buck Farmer (5-6). He retired the next two batters, but Ehire Adrianza's infield single loaded the bases for Kepler. Matt Hall relieved and Kepler lined his single to center field.

Zack Littell (3-0) got the win and Taylor Rogers worked a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.

Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann gave up two runs on nine hits in six innings. Twins starter Jake Odorizzi allowed three runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

Detroit's Miguel Cabrera hit a solo home run, his 10th, in the first. Adrianza put Minnesota ahead with a homer in the second.

BRAVES 6, BLUE JAYS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson and Johan Camargo hit two-run homers and Mike Soroka snapped a streak of eight starts without a win in Atlanta's victory over Toronto.

The NL East-leading Braves have won five straight, all against American League teams. The Braves also have won nine straight home games.

Soroka (11-3) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings in his first win in three starts against Toronto. Mark Melancon threw a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save.

Jacob Waguespack (4-3) was hurt by five walks.

PHILLIES 7, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Rhys Hoskins drove in three runs with two homers and Bryce Harper and Scott Kingery added two-run shots as Philadelphia overpowered Cincinnati.

Harper extended his hitting and scoring streaks to 10 games.

Philadelphia starter Drew Smyly (3-6) tied his season high with eight strikeouts while earning his first win in six starts. He gave up four hits, one run and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati's Anthony DeSclafani (9-8) shook off a rough start to last seven innings, giving up three hits and four runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.

CARDINALS 3, GIANTS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright tossed seven scoreless innings and Kolten Wong delivered a run-scoring triple to lead St. Louis over San Francisco.

Paul DeJong had an RBI single for the Cardinals, who have won 10 of 12. They stretched their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central 3+ games.

Mauricio Dubon hit his first major league homer for San Francisco, which has lost six of seven.

Wainwright (10-9) allowed four hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter in a 96-pitch stint. Carlos Martinez picked up his 18th save in 21 chances.

Tyler Beede (3-9) gave up three runs on five hits over four innings. He struck out two and walked one.

CUBS 5, MARINERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Schwarber had a three-run triple to highlight a five-run seventh, and Chicago snapped a 24-inning scoreless streak, rallying to beat Seattle.

Anthony Rizzo went 2 for 2 and drove in a run for Chicago, which remained 3+ games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.

Matt Wisler (3-3) took the loss.

David Phelps (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Duane Underwood Jr. and Brad Wieck closed it out.

The Mariners got their run off Kyle Hendricks in the fifth on back-to-back doubles with one out by Dylan Moore and Dee Gordon.

DIAMONDBACKS 14, PADRES 7

PHOENIX (AP) - Josh Rojas, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker homered in the sixth inning off converted infielder Javy Guerra and Arizona beat San Diego.

The Diamondbacks have won seven of eight. The Padres had won three of four.

Rojas also doubled and singled twice and Ketel Marte drove in four runs for the Diamondbacks.

A six-run second inning put the Diamondbacks comfortably ahead for good, helped by a wild pitch and throwing error. Rojas, Marte, pitcher Mike Leake and Nick Ahmed drove in runs in the inning.

Padres starter Cal Quantrill (6-6) was charged with eight runs on 10 hits in five innings.

Ty France hit a three-run homer for the Padres.

Leake (11-10) got through 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits for his first win at home with the Diamondbacks.

INDIANS 11, WHITE SOX 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana homered, Franmil Reyes had a three-run double and Cleveland defeated Chicago.

Santana hit his team-leading 32nd home run with one out in the sixth and had an RBI single in the seventh.

Reyes' first-inning drive to the wall in left-center gave Cleveland the lead after Chicago starter Ross Detwiler walked the bases loaded.

Rookie right-hander Aaron Civale (3-3) allowed three runs - one earned - in five innings.

The Indians needed a boost after being swept in a three-game series at Tampa Bay. Cleveland trails Minnesota by 5 + games in the AL Central and is a half-game behind the Rays in the race for the first wild-card spot.

The White Sox have dropped seven straight - matching their longest streak of the season - and are a season-high 17 games under .500.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Interesting college football spreads for this week:

? Nebraska (-4.5) @ Colorado

? Texas A&M @ Clemson (-17.5)

? San Diego State @ UCLA (-7)

? BYU @ Tennessee (-3.5)

? LSU (-5) @ Texas

? Miami (-6) @ North Carolina

Quote of the Day
?What the hell is that? I don?t know what that is. That?s crazy. Seriously, it?s crazy. You?ve got a lot of people paying their hard-earned money to come watch you perform. Perform. Perform. It?s your job to be in shape. It?s your job to be strong enough to perform at that level every single night.?
Kobe Bryant, in reference to healthy NBA players taking games off.

Tuesday?s quiz
Which two SEC teams did Cam Newton play for in college?

Monday?s quiz
Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters in his Hall of Fame career.

Sunday?s quiz
Drew Bledsoe was New England?s starting QB before Tom Brady took over.

****************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Bad weekend to be a USC quarterback:

We said yesterday how USC Trojans QB JT Daniels tore his ACL and is done for the year. He will be replaced by true freshman Kedon Slovis.

South Carolina Gamecocks QB Jake Bentley broke his foot and is out for six weeks; his replacement will be true freshman Ryan Hilinski.

12) Slovis, Hilinski starting means that seven true freshmen are now starting QB?s out of 130 I-A football teams.

11) Indianapolis Colts gave QB Jacoby Brissett $30M for two years, and then signed Brian Hoyer as his backup, giving him $12M for three years.

10) In his last three years at UCLA, Dolphins? QB Josh Rosen had three different offensive coordinators; last year, he had two OC?s in his one year with the Cardinals, and obviously has a new OC in Miami this year. Plus the Dolphins just traded their LT, which endangers the health of whomever plays QB for Miami this year.

Not a great start to Rosen?s career.

9) Early nominee for Bad Beat of the Year was Northwestern (+6.5) at Stanford. Game was 10-7 Stanford in the last minute when the Cardinal sacked Northwestern?s QB, he fumbled and they scored a defensive TD to cover the spread with 0:20 left to play.

8) Jets? radio guy Bob Wischusen was working a college game on ESPN Saturday and was saying how he thinks Jim Brown and Lawrence Taylor were the two best football players ever.

Jim Brown played before my time, so I can?t comment on him; LT was a great linebacker whose pass rushing skills helped change the game, but if he did the same exact thing playing for the Chiefs or Bengals, instead of a NYC-area team, he?s not in the best player ever conversation.

7) In five starts from April 15-May 9, Cubs? P Yu Darvish walked 22 batters in 22.2 IP.

In 14 starts since June 15, Darvish has walked 8 hitters, while striking out 102 in 80 IP.

6) Jacksonville Jaguars won?t practice Wednesday because of Hurricane Dorian.

5) Alabama is a 54-point favorite over New Mexico State Saturday; the total is 65; Crimson Tide opens SEC play next week when they play South Carolina, so the starter figure to get a good chunk of this game off. Then again, New Mexico State just lost 58-7 at Washington State, so probably a good game to stay away from.

4) Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the 20th QB to start for the Dolphins since Dan Marino retired.

3) Final AAA Home Run Totals:
2018 ? 3,652
2019 ? 5,749 (57.4% increase)

AAA games switched to major league baseballs this year.

2) Sports betting became legal in Indiana Sunday; governor of Indiana made a $10 wager on the Colts to open things up. Probably would?ve bet more if Andrew Luck hadn?t retired.

Wouldn?t it be fun if just once, a politician stepped out and dropped $1,000 on the home team with his ceremonial first bet? Have some onions, Governor!!!

1) Labor Day night and only two baseball games are on, with 8:00 the latest start time. Whats up with that?

LEADING OFF: DeGrom-Scherzer, Encarnación set, Dorian effect
September 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

PAIR OF ACES

It's a marquee matchup when Jacob deGrom starts for the Mets against Max Scherzer at Nationals Park. Washington leads the NL wild-card race, New York is chasing.

DeGrom (8-8, 2.66 ERA) is 1-0 with a 0.53 ERA in three games vs. the Nationals this season. Scherzer (9-5. 2.46) has a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings over two starts since returning from the injured list last month.

Mets catcher Wilson Ramos owns a 25-game hitting streak, the longest active string in the majors.

WELCOME BACK

Edwin Encarnacion is set to rejoin the Yankees after missing a month because of a broken right wrist. He's hit 30 home runs this year, including nine in 36 games since being acquired from Seattle in mid-June.

The slugger returns to the Yankees to take on Texas, a day after they lost 7-0 to Mike Minor and the Rangers - that ended New York's streak of 220 games without being shut out.

It was the second longest string without being blanked in the majors since at least 1900, behind a 308-game stretch by the Babe Ruth-led Yankees from 1931-33. New York was previously shut out June 30, 2018, by Chris Sale and the Red Sox.

WEATHER CHANGE

The threat of Hurricane Dorian caused Wednesday's scheduled game between Tampa Bay and Baltimore to be moved up a day. The teams will now play a doubleheader, only the third twinbill for the Rays in 22 seasons at Tropicana Field.

START HIM UP

Minnesota rookie Randy Dobnak makes his first start in the majors, facing the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The 24-year-old righty has a 0.00 ERA in eight innings over three relief appearances since making his big league debut this month.

Dobnak was signed in 2017 out of a Detroit-based independent league. He'll be opposed by former Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello (12-10, 5.42).

OUCH!

Anthony Rizzo has taken a painful path into the Cubs' record book. The star first baseman has been hit by a pitch 139 times to set the team's franchise record.

Rizzo was plunked twice Monday against Seattle. He began the day tied with Frank Chance.

''I saw it on the board, I said, `Whoa,''' Rizzo said. ''I didn't know I was approaching anything.''

Rizzo and the Cubs next face Mariners righty Felix Hernandez (1-4, 6.02) at Wrigley Field. Jon Lester (11-9, 4.36 ERA) starts for Chicago in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners.

Cubs star shortstop Javier Baez was sidelined for a game after injuring his left thumb sliding into second base on Sunday. He might miss another day.
