STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Ryan Yarbrough, Tampa Bay Rays (11-3, 3.51 ERA, $186):
When we did this column on Friday there was no shortage of streaking pitchers but today there is hardly anybody to choose (besides three of the throwers we already discussed in our Double Play Picks). Yarbrough probably fits the bill closer than anybody else despite giving up 10 runs over his last 19 innings pitched.

Over the long term, the Tampa Bay southpaw is indeed streaking with the Rays 12-2 over his last 14 outings and Yarbrough posting a 2.34 ERA with a 0.78 WHIP over that span. His control has been exceptional with just four walked batters through 65 innings over his last 11 starts.

Today, Yarbrough and the Rays are taking on the Angels and their own young lefty in Patrick Sandoval. The Halos are 0-5 in Sandoval's last five starts and 0-6 in their last six home games. With Tampa Bay 13-3 over their previous 16 contests they hold good value on the moneyline at -160.

SLUMPING

Trevor Bauer, Cincinnati Reds (10-12, 4.55 ERA, $-314):
Ever since his last game with Cleveland before the trade to Cincinnati, Bauer has looked pretty awful. The Reds are 2-6 in Bauer's eight starts with the franchise. Over his last nine starts overall Bauer is just 1-5 with a 8.08 ERA and a WHIP of 1.71.

Bauer will try to turn things around this afternoon against the Diamondbacks. Arizona is 1-6 in their last seven games and are batting just .223 over their previous 25 contests.

The Under is 5-1-1 in the Reds last seven games, 6-1-1 in the D-Backs previous eight and 6-0-1 in Arizona starter Zac Gallen's last seven outings. Cincy may actually be a bit undervalued at +135 and the Under 8.5 is worth a look as well.

Rizzo sprains ankle for Cubs, who sweep Pirates
September 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo was pulled from a game Sunday with a sprained right ankle, putting a damper on the Chicago Cubs' 16-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates that completed a three-game sweep.

Rizzo was injured fielding a bunt at first base, had to be helped off the field and could not put pressure on the leg. X-rays taken at Wrigley Field showed no fractures. He'll get an MRI on Monday.

Chicago's postseason pursuit has already been hindered by an injury to shortstop Javier Baez, who is out for the rest of the regular season with a hairline fracture of his left thumb.

The Cubs maintained their one-game lead over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

Kris Bryant homered twice, and Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber and Jonathan Lucroy also connected for the Cubs, who outscored the Pirates 47-15 in the series.

Brad Wieck (1-1) struck out both batters he faced. Trevor Williams (7-7) allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

DODGERS 3, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Jedd Gyorko came off the bench late and played a big role in rallying Los Angeles to a victory that damaged New York's dwindling wild-card chances.

Gyorko scored the tying run in the eighth inning on Chris Taylor's double and hit an RBI single off Seth Lugo (6-4) with two outs in the ninth to put the NL West champions in front.

Brandon Nimmo laced a two-run triple for the Mets, who managed only three hits and wasted an excellent start from Zack Wheeler. They dropped four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card to with 13 to go. Milwaukee is three games ahead of New York.

Scuffling closer Kenley Jansen (5-3) worked a perfect eighth, and Kenta Maeda got two outs for his fifth career save and second this season.

BREWERS 7, CARDINALS 6

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ryan Braun overcame a 4-3 deficit with a grand slam off Junior Fernandez with two outs in the ninth. Milwaukee won for the ninth time in 10 games and closed within three games of the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

Jon Gant (10-1) walked the bases loaded in the ninth.

Tommy Edman hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom half off Josh Hader, who struck out Harrison Bader and pinch-hitter Tyler O'Neill for his 33rd save. Bader hit a pair of solo homers.

Matt Albers (7-5) got two outs.

BLUE JAYS 6, YANKEES 4

TORONTO (AP) - Pitchers Dellin Betances and Jordan Montgomery made their season debuts for the Yankees after lengthy layoffs.

Betances, a 31-year-old right-hander, recovered from a strained lat muscle and struck out Reese McGuire and Brandon Drury, his only two batters. New York hopes Betances will be a factor in the playoffs, joining an already strong bullpen that includes Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton, Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle and Chad Green.

Recovered from Tommy John surgery, Montgomery made his first major league appearance since May 1 last year. He allowed three runs and four hits in two innings. He threw 26 of 41 pitches for strikes.

Randal Grichuck homered twice, including a tiebreaking three-run drive in the fifth off Nestor Cortes Jr. (5-1).

T.J. Zeuch (1-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings for his first big league win, and Ken Giles got his 20th save.

RED SOX 6, PHILLIES 3

Andrew Benintendi had a pair of hits for the defending World Series champions, who have won three in a row. Boston began play trailing Tampa Bay by 10 games for the AL's second wild card.

Rick Porcello (13-12) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, and Brandon Workman pitched a scoreless ninth for his 14th save.

Rhys Hoskins homered for Philadelphia, which fell 4+ games behind the Cubs.

Jason Vargas (6-8) gave up five runs - four earned - in three innings.

REDS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Eugenio Suarez homered twice to tie the New York Mets' Pete Alonso for the major league lead with 47 homers, and Trevor Bauer (11-12) held his former team to one run and four hits over eight innings as Arizona dropped 5+ games behind the Cubs

Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Zac Gallen (3-6) was charged with three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

ORIOLES 8, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Edwin Jackson (3-10) allowed five runs in five innings for Detroit (44-104), which lost two of the first three games of the four-game series against the Orioles (49-100) and opened a 4+-game advantage for the worst record in the major leagues - and the top pick in next June's amateur draft.

Asher Wojciechowski (3-8) won for the first time since July 26, allowing two runs and eight hits in five innings. He had been 0-5 in his previous eight starts.

Trailing 2-1, the Orioles took the lead in a three-run third that included Dwight Smith Jr.'s two-out triple, Hanser Alberto's run-scoring bunt single and tiebreaking two-run homer by Rio Ruiz.

NATIONALS 7, BRAVES 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anibal Sanchez (9-8) allowed three hits in seven innings to beat his former team for the third time this season.

Howie Kendrick homered and drove in three runs as Washington clinched its eighth winning season in a row and remained 1+ games ahead of Chicago for the top NL wild card.

Atlanta's magic number to clinch the NL East remained at four as the Braves were blanked for the fourth time, the fewest in the NL.

Max Fried (16-6) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

ASTROS 12, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Wade Miley (14-5) allowed two runs and in six innings, rebounding from a pair of bad starts, and Houston tied the Yankees for a big league-leading 98 wins.

Josh Reddick's five hits included a two-run homer.

Jakob Junis (9-14) gave up five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in 77 career starts.

ATHLETICS 6, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Sean Manaea (2-0) limited Texas to three singles over six scoreless innings, Marcus Semien became the third Oakland slugger with 30 homers and the Athletics won their sixth straight to move 1+ games ahead of Tampa Bay for the first AL wild card.

Rookie left-hander Jesus Luzardo allowed one run over three innings for his first big league save.

Jonathan Hernandez (1-1) allowed three runs and two hits in 2 2/3 innings.

ANGELS 6, RAYS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer off Ryan Yarbrough (11-4) in the fifth inning and drove in four runs, cutting Tampa Bay's lead over Cleveland for the second AL wild card to 1+ games.

Tampa Bay trailed 6-1 before Austin Meadows' 31st homer, a three-run drive off Ty Buttre with two outs in the eighth. Hansel Robles struck out pinch hitter Ji-Man Choi, then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his career-high 21st save.

After learning that two-time AL MVP Mike Trout will have foot surgery and miss the rest of the season, Los Angeles stopped a six-game losing streak. On Saturday, the Angels ensured their fourth straight losing record. Noe Ramirez (5-2) retired six straight batters.

Nick Wittgren (5-1) allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings, and Oliver Perez got his first save since 2017 when Rosario popped out. Fernando Romero (0-1) was the loser,

GIANTS 2, MARLINS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Yastrzemski scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on Ryne Stanek's second wild pitch after Yastrzemski and Brandon Belt reached on consecutive one-out singles against Jarlin Garcia (3-2).

LEADING OFF: Cubs' Rizzo to get MRI, Suárez slugs away
September 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

BIG TEST

The Cubs are sending star slugger Anthony Rizzo for an MRI after he sprained his right ankle Sunday, hoping the first baseman can still help with their postseason push. Rizzo was injured fielding a bunt at first base in the third inning during a 16-6 win over Pittsburgh. He had to be helped off the field and could not put pressure on the leg. X-rays taken at Wrigley Field showed no fractures, but Chicago will get a clearer prognosis from the MRI. Chicago's postseason pursuit has already been hindered by an injury to shortstop Javier Baez, who is out for the rest of the regular season with a hairline fracture of his left thumb.

SEEING RED

Eugenio Suarez takes aim at the major league home run lead as the Reds open a series at Wrigley Field. Suarez connected twice Sunday and has 47 for the season, tying him with Mets slugger Pete Alonso for best in the majors. The 28-year-old Suarez has eight homers this month. The last Cincinnati hitter to lead the majors in home runs was George Foster, who hit 52 in 1977.

STILL STEADY HANDED

Even in a late-season slump, Ryan Braun has been a timely hitter for the Brewers. The 35-year-old hit a go-ahead grand slam to sink St. Louis on Sunday, a few days after hitting a tiebreaking homer against Miami. The six-time All-Star entered Sunday with a .133 average in September. ''I'm not as good as I was,'' he said. ''But in big moments, I'm the guy still.'' With Christian Yelich done for the season, the Brewers need a clutch Braun for their postseason push. They enter a home series against San Diego trailing the Cubs by one game for the second NL wild card.

BUILDING UP

The A's return home after a 6-1 trip with a 1 1/2-game lead over Tampa Bay for the top AL wild card and a series on deck with the struggling Royals. Right-hander Tanner Roark (4-1, 3.40) starts the opener against Kansas City. Since being acquired from Cincinnati on July 31, Roark has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his seven starts. With the Rays taking Monday off, Oakland can stretch its lead before Tampa Bay opens a two-game set at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

John Means, Baltimore Orioles (10-10, 3.47 ERA, $60):
It's rare to see the lowly Orioles as -135 chalk on the road but that's the situation in Detroit today, largely because the underrated Means is on the mound against the only team in baseball with a worse record than Baltimore.

The lefty has been reliable for most of the season pitching to a 1.11 WHIP while holding opponents to a batting average of .229. He's been even better recently; over his last five starts the Orioles have gone 3-2 and he has a 2.53 ERA with a 0.78 WHIP. The Orioles and Tigers matchup might be a game that only the most ardent of baseball fans (and most hardcore of sports bettors) are interested in but Baltimore is worth a look as the favorite.

SLUMPING

Glenn Sparkman, Kansas City Royals (4-11, 5.94 ERA, $-657):
Sparkman is coming off a win where he allowed three runs through five innings but don't let that fool you: the Royals starter has been on a slump of epic proportions since July. In 13 starts since then Kansas City has gone 2-11 and Sparkman has recorded a 7.49 ERA while allowing opponents to bat .320 against him.

Tonight, Sparkman and the Royals are in Oakland to take on the A's who are leading the AL Wild Card race. Sparkman pitched against the A's back on August 29 and gave up seven runs in just over four innings. Kansas City is a +225 underdog with the O/U installed at 9.5.

3 STRIKES

TWINNING BY A LOT

The Minnesota Twins have the fourth-highest run differential in the majors and host the Chicago White Sox tonight. The Twins will give the ball to Jose Berrios who is 12-8 with a 3.63 ERA while the White Sox will start Reynaldo Lopez who is 9-13 with a 5.35 ERA.

Lopez has pitched in Minnesota twice this season and got rocked both times, allowing a total of five homers and 11 earned runs in 9 2-3 innings. The Twins are -240 faves and are worth looking at on the runline at -130.

CRUSHING LONG BALLS AT COORS FIELD

Unless you've been asleep for most of this MLB season you would know that scoring at Coors Field has been through the roof, even more so than usual. An average of 13.11 runs per game have been plated in Colorado this year.

Today, Antonio Senzatela and the Rockies host the New York Mets and Steven Matz. Matz has been brutal on the road this season going 3-7 with a 6.08 ERA and a BAA of .291, while Senzetala has been brutal everywhere with a 6.87 ERA and a BAA of .312 in 22 starts overall.

No surprise that the O/U for this game has been set at 13.5. If you find that number hard to swallow some other bets worth considering are Charlie Blackmon to go Over 1.5 on his total bases (-150) and Pete Alonso to hit a home run (+205).

RICHARDS' RETURN

Garrett Richards will make his season (and his Padres) debut tonight as the Friars head to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers. Richards is 14 months removed from Tommy John Surgery and could be in for a rough spot on the road against a Milwaukee team that still has a chance at making the playoffs even with Christian Yelich done for the season with a broken kneecap.

The Brewers will start Zach Davies who is 9-7 with a 3.77 ERA. The Padres are 0-6 in their last six games on the road while the Brew Crew are 9-1 over their previous ten games overall. Milwaukee has decent value as -155 favorites.

Ozuna has 4 RBIs, Cardinals beat Nationas 4-2
September 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Marcell Ozuna drove in four runs and threw out a runner at home plate from left field, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Monday night.

St. Louis retained its two-game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Washington is one-half game ahead of the Cubs for the top NL wild card.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez missed the game following a heart procedure in Washington, and bench coach Chip Hale was in charge of the dugout.

Dexter Fowler walked against Sean Doolittle (6-5) with one out in the seventh, Hunter Strickland walked Paul Goldschmidt with two outs and Ozuna doubled just inside the left-field line, just the second hit in 11 at-bats for the Cardinals with runners in scoring position.

Dakota Hudson (16-7) won for the sixth time in seven starts. Carlos Martinez got his 20th save in 23 chances.

ROCKIES 9, METS 4

DENVER (AP) - Pitcher Antonio Senzatela hit a tying, two-run single that ended a year-long 0-for-44 slide at the plate, Trevor Story followed three pitches later with a three-run homer of Steven Matz to cap a six-run fourth inning and Colorado drop New York five games back for the second NL wild card with 12 games to play.

Brandon Nimmo, batting leadoff for the first time since May 17, opened the game with a home run off Senzatela (10-10). Starting their last road trip of the regular season, the Mets built a 4-1 lead on Jeff McNeil's two-run homer in the third that stopped an 0-for-13 slump and Amed Rosario's RBI double in the fourth.

Matz, who allowed Ian Desmond's second-inning homer, needed 42 pitches to get through the fourth and dropped to 0-2 with a 10.15 ERA in three starts at Coors Field.

Charlie Blackmon singled with one out, Ryan McMahon walked and Garrett Hampson hit an RBI single with two outs.

Matz (10-9) allowed seven runs, six hits and two walks in four innings.

Senzatela gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

CUBS 8, REDS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer and made a diving catch in left field, helping Chicago win its fifth straight.

Nicholas Castellanos added a two-run double in the eighth inning as the Cubs moved a season-high 14 games above .500. Chicago has outscored its opponents 59-18 during its win streak.

The Cubs (82-68) pulled within a half-game of Washington for the top spot in the wild-card standings and stayed two games back of NL Central-leading St. Louis, which held off the Nationals for a 4-2 win.

Steve Cishek, Alec Mills (1-0), Rowan Wick, Kyle Ryan and David Phelps combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of an ineffective Cole Hamels. It was Mills' first major league win in his 17th big league appearance.

Kevin Gausman (3-9) pitched two innings for the Reds in his first start since he was claimed off waivers from the Braves last month.

TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios pitched into the eighth inning to win his second straight start, Mitch Garver hit a go-ahead double and Minnesota increased its lead to five games in the AL Central.

Seeking their first division title since 2010, the Twins (92-58) are assured of their best record since finishing 94-68 nine years ago.

Berrios (13-8) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. He was rewarded with a standing ovation when he was removed.

Tyler Duffey finished the eighth, Sergio Romo allowed Eloy Jimenez's homer leading off the ninth before getting an out, and Taylor Rogers needed just eight pitches to finish a six-hitter for his 27th save in 33 chances.

White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez (9-14) gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

BREWERS 4, PADRES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Corey Spangenberg drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the fourth inning, and Milwaukee kept up a playoff push with its 10th win in 11 games.

The Brewers remained one game behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL's second wild card and three games back of St. Louis, the NL Central leader.

San Diego got just two hits and dropped to 68-82, tying the franchise record with its ninth consecutive losing season. The Padres also finished under .500 from 1969-77, the first nine years of the expansion franchise.

Padres starter Garret Richards (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits over 3 2/3 innings in his first major league appearance since Tommy John surgery in July 2018.

Zach Davies (10-7) allowed two hits in five innings.

TIGERS 5, ORIOLES 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jordy Mercer hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Detroit split a four-game series between the teams with the worst records in the major leagues.

After the first series in American League history between teams in 50 or more games under .500, Detroit (45-104) has a 3 1/2-game ''lead'' over Baltimore (49-101) for the top pick in June's amateur draft, which goes to the club with the lowest winning percentage this season.

Detroit needs to win one of its final six games at Comerica Park to avoid breaking the major league record of 59 home losses, set by the 1939 St. Louis Browns.

Tyler Alexander (1-3), a 24-year-old left-hander forced into the rotation by a doubleheader last week, got his first big league win.

John Means (10-11) gave up five runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Six interesting college football spreads this week:

? Utah (-4.5) @ USC

? Michigan State (-6.5) @ Northwestern

? Michigan @ Wisconsin (-3)

? Kentucky @ Mississippi State (-7)

? Auburn @ Texas A&M (-4)

? Oklahoma State @ Texas (-5)

Tweet of the Day
?Cowboys got to 2-0 and Sean Payton got a new contract. For Jason Garrett, today was pretty?pretty?good.?
Tim Cowlishaw

Tuesday?s quiz
Who coached the Tennessee Titans in their only Super Bowl appearance?

Monday?s quiz
Chris Chandler was the Atlanta Falcons? QB the first time they played in a Super Bowl, when they lost to Denver

Sunday?s quiz
Pro wrestler/actor Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football at Miami.

*************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Bad news on the quarterback front Monday; Ben Roethlisberger is done for the year- he needs elbow surgery. Roethlisberger will be 38 in March; there is a chance his Hall of Fame career is over.

Mason Rudolph takes over as Pittsburgh?s starter; they traded #3 QB Josh Dobbs to the Jaguars last week, a move they probably regret now. Looks like the new backup is Devlin Hedges, who played college ball at Samford.

12) Drew Brees needs surgery for ligament damage in his right thumb, is out for at least six weeks; Teddy Bridgewater is the Saints? new starter.

11) I?m endorsing something today that I never thought I?d endorse, the Peyton Manning stories on ESPN+ about the history of the NFL . Watched one the other day about the Lombardi Trophy, and it was excellent.

Lot of information in there, even if Peyton continues to be annoying at the same time, just like his TV commercials. But if you like NFL history, this is good stuff.

10) Armen Keteyian wrote an article on Nick Saban in The Athletic last week that made me sad, talking about how when Saban won his first national title at Alabama, he didn?t/couldn?t enjoy the win, he was still correcting mistakes made during the game, and then stressing out about the things that had to be done about recruiting in the next few days.

If you can?t enjoy winning, coaching is a miserable job, because no one enjoys losing. Saban had a staff meeting in a hotel meeting room at 10am the day after Alabama won the title, less than 12 hours after the championship game ended.

Understood that you don?t sustain winning without that single-minded focus, but life is short, and you need to enjoy the good things along the way, too.

9) From Jen McCaffrey:
In 2001, an FBI investigation called Operation Bullpen found that over 75% of all autographed items on the market were forgeries. As a result, Major League Baseball created an authentication department that now employs 220 current and former law enforcement officials.

Authenticators Inc. is a company that works with MLB to ensure the legitimacy of milestone and game-used items as well as any player-autographed items. At least two authenticators are present at all 2,430 regular season games, with more at postseason games and special events like the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby.

8) Baseball stuff:
? Braves put IF Johan Camargo (hairline fracture of shin) on the IL.

7) Football stuff:
? Steelers? QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) is out for the year.
? Saints? QB Drew Brees is out for six weeks.
? Redskins RB Derrius Guice (knee) was put on IR.
? Florida Gators QB Feleipe Franks (dislocated ankle) is out for the year.

6) Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett turned down a raise this week while extending his contract another year. The Cavaliers announced the extension Monday, saying Bennett asked for the money he turned down to be used to pay his staff more and for improvements to both his program as well as other Virginia teams.

5) Browns 23, Jets 3:
? Terrible game; wasn?t nearly as close as the final score indicates.
? Beckham caught an 89-yard TD pass to officially seal the win.
? Teams combined to convert 6-27 on third down.

? 3rd-stringer Falk was 20-25/198 in relief of injured QB Siemian.
? Jets had 45 total yards in the first half, wound up with 262.
? Le?veon Bell had 31 touches for 129 yards.

4) Handicapping 101? France upset the USA in that FIBA basketball tournament in China, then lost their next game by 14 to Argentina. For once, life makes perfect sense. Peaks and valleys, you have an emotional win, then a very disappointing loss.

3) In case you were wondering, the highest paid player on the WNBA?s Las Vegas Aces makes $115,000 a year. They play a 34-game regular season. Was wondering the other day, so I looked it up, but I can?t find out how much WNBA coaches make.

2) If I owned an NBA team and was shelling out hundreds millions of dollars to pay the players, no way in hell would I want any of them playing in these international tournaments during the offseason that don?t mean a damn thing. One of them gets hurt, then what?

1) Best wishes to Nationals? skipper Dave Martinez, who felt chest pains and underwent a cardiac catheterization Monday- he?ll miss the series in St Louis this week. Chip Hale is the interim manager for Washington.

LEADING OFF: Severino makes season debut for Yankees
September 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

LATE DEBUT

Luis Severino makes his season debut for the Yankees when New York opens its final homestand of the regular season against the Los Angeles Angels.

Severino was scratched from what was to be his first spring training start on March 5 when he the 25-year-old right-hander felt discomfort while warming up. He was diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation, didn't feel good after playing catch a month later and had an MRI on April 9 that revealed a strained latissimus dorsi muscle. He didn't throw off a mound again until a bullpen session on Aug. 9 and made minor league injury rehabilitation appearances on Sept. 1, 6 and 11, allowing seven runs - four earned - and 13 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked none. A two-time All-Star, Severino was 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 32 starts last season and signed a $40 million, four-year contract, a deal that includes a 2023 team option and could be worth $52.25 million for five seasons. He has a 41-25 career record with a 3.51 ERA. New York's magic number is two over Cleveland to clinch a playoff berth and three over Tampa Bay for the Yankees' first AL East title since 2012.

CHECK IT OUT

Reds right-hander Sonny Gray faces Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish at Wrigley Field in a matchup of two of baseball's best pitchers since the All-Star break. Gray is 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA in his last eight starts, returning to form in his first year with Cincinnati after he was acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees. Darvish struck out 14 while pitching six scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory at San Diego on Thursday. He has a 2.44 ERA in 11 starts since the break, striking out 93 and walking six during that stretch.

K KORNER

Houston's Justin Verlander has 275 strikeouts going into Tuesday's start against Texas, 17 behind the Astros' Gerrit Cole. They can become the second teammates to strike out 300 in a season after Arizona's Randy Johnson (334) and Curt Schilling (316) in 2002.

COLD BATS

The Diamondbacks have tumbled to the rear of the NL wild card race because their bats have gone cold. Arizona scored just 14 runs over nine games from Sept. 7-15, which led to a 2-7 record during that span. They'll try to keep their longshot playoff hopes alive on Tuesday when left-hander Alex Young takes the mound. He's had a good rookie season, with a 7-4 record and 3.38 ERA. The 26-year-old set a club rookie record with 12 strikeouts against the Reds on Sept. 7
