STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Dallas Keuchel, Atlanta Braves (8-5, 3.35 ERA, $160):
This is exactly why the Braves brought Keuchel in, to be the lead dog in a postseason rotation and the southpaw is peaking at just the right time. Keuchel has been clutch from over a month now, pitching to a 0.97 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over his last six starts. He?s been so good, the Braves a healthy -180 home favorites for tonight?s game against the rival Phillies.

SLUMPING

Mitch Keller, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 8.29 ERA, $-598):
A lot of things have gone wrong for the Buccos this year, and it feels a little like they are throwing Keller to the wolves. The rookie right-hander has been roughed up for a 10.97 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP over his last three starts. If there is a saving grace, Keller has been better when pitching in Pittsburgh and he?s even a -130 home favorite tonight against the almost-as-hapless Mariners.

BLUE BIRDS BLEED GREEN

September baseball is a tough thing to handicap these days. There are 40-man rosters. Fewer teams in postseason races than ever before. Teams tanking. And other teams that did have postseason hopes that fell short and now don?t care. But there are a few teams out there that are building towards next season. The Blue Jays are one of those teams.

Toronto has been using the last few months to see what they have in their talented crop of prospects. Hint: A lot of them are very good. So, the Jays, while at just 59 wins, provide some nice value when taking on lesser teams. Like, the Orioles for example. The Jays are just -125 road faves tonight in Baltimore, but have the much better lineup and are facing a kid making his first career start.

Meanwhile, the Jays counter with rookie Trent Thornton, who has had his fair share of ups and downs, is coming off a five-inning, no-hit performance against the Red Sox where he struck out seven. He also has a 2.12 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in three starts against the O?s this season. Take the Jays tonight.

Biggio hits for cycle as Blue Jays beat Orioles 8-5
September 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of former Red Sox great and Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, homered in his first game in Fenway Park, and Alex Dickerson had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the 15th inning to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 7-6 victory over Boston on Tuesday night.

The game featured a major league record-tying 24 pitchers - including a team-record 13 by the Giants - and had 50 players overall, lasting 5 hours, 54 minutes. ''Take Me Out to the Ballgame'' was played in the middle of the 14th inning.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy, who is retiring at the end of the season, moved one win away from becoming the 11th big-league manager to reach 2,000 victories.

Donovan Solano opened the 15th with a ground-rule double against Trevor Kelley (0-2) and advanced on a wild pitch before the Dickerson's sac fly.

Dereck Rodriguez (6-9) worked two innings for the victory.

BLUE JAYS 8, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Rookie Cavan Biggio hit for the cycle, leading Toronto to the victory.

Biggio homered in the third inning, singled in the sixth, doubled in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. He drove in four runs and scored three times.

Biggio and his father, Craig, a Hall of Famer with the Houston Astros, are the second father-son duo in major league history to hit for the cycle, joining Daryle and Gary Ward.

It was also the first time an opponent hit for the cycle in the 27-year history of Camden Yards.

Trey Mancini and Jonathan Villar homered for last-place Baltimore, which lost for the third time in four games. Mychal Givens (2-6) got the loss.

Derek Law (1-2) earned the win by throwing a scoreless eighth inning.

YANKEES 8, ANGELS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Luis Severino pitched four dominant innings in his injury-delayed season debut for the Yankees.

A two-time All-Star and the ace of the Yankees staff, Severino got hurt while warming up before his first scheduled spring training appearance on March 5.

While Severino was back on the mound, the Yankees announced reliever Dellin Betances partially tore the Achilles tendon in his left foot in his season debut Sunday at Toronto.

New York lowered its magic number to one over Cleveland to clinch the Yankees' 55th postseason appearance - 22 more than any other team.

Gleyber Torres hit his 38th homer, and Jonathan Loiasiga (2-1) got the win.

Noe Ramirez (5-4) was charged with the loss.

BREWERS 3, PADRES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit his 35th homer, and Milwaukee earned its 11th win in 12 games.

Lorenzo Cain also went deep as the Brewers moved into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the NL's second wild card. They also pulled within two games of NL Central-leading St. Louis.

Moustakas connected against Matt Strahm (5-9) in the seventh, giving Milwaukee a 2-1 lead. Trent Grisham added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Matt Albers (8-5) got the win, and Drew Pomeranz worked two innings for his second save.

Hunter Renfroe hit his 32nd homer in the seventh for San Diego, which matched a season high with its sixth straight loss.

NATIONALS 6, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Patrick Corbin struck out 11 in six innings for Washington, and Howie Kendrick had three hits.

The Nationals increased their lead for the NL's top wild card to 1 1/2 games over the Cubs and Brewers.

Corbin (13-7) allowed two unearned runs and five hits. Daniel Hudson got six outs for his fourth save.

Miles Mikolas (9-14) pitched six innings before he was lifted for a pinch hitter. He allowed three runs and became the first Cardinals pitcher to lose 14 games in a season since Braden Looper went 12-14 in 2008.

St. Louis leads the NL Central by two games over Chicago and Milwaukee.

TWINS 9, WHITE SOX 8, 12 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ronald Torreyes was hit by a bases-loaded pitch in Minnesota's three-run 12th inning, and the Twins maintained their five-game lead in the AL Central.

Marwin Gonzalez hit a tying two-run single off Jose Ruiz (1-4). Torreyes, a September roster addition who has only six plate appearances for the Twins this season, crouched in front of a 2-1 fastball with his bat ready to swing before holding off. The ball grazed his right forearm as he lowered it over the plate, triggering the celebration by the Twins.

The Twins, who improved to 13-5 against the White Sox this season, trimmed their magic number for clinching the division to seven.

Ryan Cordell hit a two-run drive in the top of the 12th off Ryne Harper (4-2), one of four homers allowed by Twins relievers.

INDIANS 7, TIGERS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Adam Plutko pitched six effective innings, rookie Oscar Mercado homered and Cleveland beat Detroit for the 15th straight time.

Cleveland has won 16 of 17 in the season series, with Detroit's only win coming on April 10 at Comerica Park.

Plutko (7-4) allowed two runs and four hits in his first win since he beat Detroit on Aug. 27.

Mercado hit a solo drive off Zac Reininger (0-3) in the second for his 12th homer.

Dawel Lugo homered in the fifth for Detroit. Victor Reyes singled in a run in the third.

REDS 4, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs were shut down by Sonny Gray and two relievers, hurting their playoff positioning.

Chicago had won five in a row, outscoring its opponents 59-18 during the stretch. But it managed just two runs against Gray (11-7) before Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias closed out the five-hitter for Cincinnati.

The Cubs (82-69) dropped into a tie for the second NL wild card with Milwaukee. They also missed out on an opportunity to gain ground on NL Central-leading St. Louis, which lost 6-2 to Washington.

Rookie Aristides Aquino hit his 16th homer for Cincinnati (71-81).

Gray struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings. Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his 32nd save.

Yu Darvish (6-7) struck out 13 in seven innings for Chicago, but was hurt by a slow start. Kyle Schwarber had three hits and two RBIs.

ASTROS 4, RANGERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander picked up his major league-leading 19th win, and Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez homered for Houston.

The Astros have a magic number of one to clinch a playoff berth and three to capture their third straight American League West title.

Verlander (19-6) struck out eight in six scoreless innings. Roberto Osuna struck out two in the ninth for his 34th save.

Texas starter Lance Lynn (14-11) was tough early and the Astros had just one hit before Gurriel's home run to the first row of the seats in right field with one out in the fifth.

ATHLETICS 2, ROYALS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Olson hit a tying homer for Oakland leading off the seventh, and Seth Brown hit a go-ahead double two batters later.

Olson's drive to center reached the Coliseum's elevated bleachers in the level above the luxury suites. Jorge Lopez (4-8) then hit Mark Canha with a pitch before Brown doubled.

A.J. Puk (2-0) followed Brett Anderson and struck out two over two shutout innings for his second major league win. Liam Hendriks struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save.

The A's, who hold the top AL wild-card spot, bounced back after their six-game winning streak was snapped by Monday's 6-5 loss to the Royals.

Kansas City's Nick Dini hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth for the game's first run.

PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins and Jose Pirela hit two-run homers off Dallas Keuchel in Philadelphia's five-run fourth inning.

Vince Velasquez (7-7) gave up two runs in the first before recovering with four straight scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed five hits in five innings for the Phillies.

Hector Neris worked a rocky ninth for his 27th save.

The Braves began the night needing a combination of three wins and Washington losses to clinch the division.

Keuchel (8-6) surrendered five runs in five innings. He had won his last five starts.

METS 6, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) - Marcus Stroman pitched seven shutout innings, and New York beat Colorado to boost its flickering playoff hopes.

Amed Rosario, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso homered in the sixth for the Mets, breaking open a scoreless game.

New York pulled within four games of Chicago and Milwaukee for the second NL wild card. The Mets have 11 games left in the regular season.

Stroman (9-13) allowed four hits in helping the Mets bounce back from consecutive losses.

Charlie Blackmon homered off Luis Avilan with two outs in the ninth for the Rockies' lone run.

Tim Melville (2-3) got the loss.

MARINERS 6, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Marco Gonzales pitched seven innings, helping Seattle beat Pittsburgh after Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested on multiple felony charges earlier in the day.

Vazquez was charged with statutory sexual assault, soliciting a child and pornography, and placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball.

Vazquez was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police on one count of computer pornography/solicitation of a child and one count of providing obscene material to minors, both felonies, stemming from an investigation in Florida. He was later charged in Westmoreland County, which is located east of Pittsburgh, with felony counts of statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors and a misdemeanor count of indecent assault of a person under 16 years old.

Gonzales (16-11) also doubled and scored in the fifth inning.

LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Wainwright in St. Louis
September 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

TWO GOOD ONES

Max Scherzer faces Adam Wainwright as the Nationals and Cardinals finish their pivotal series in St. Louis. Washington is fighting for position in the wild-card race while St. Louis is looking to hold off Chicago and Milwaukee for the NL Central championship.

Since returning from a trip to the injured list for a mid-back strain, Scherzer is 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five starts for the Nationals. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched five innings of three-run ball in a 5-0 loss to Atlanta on Friday night.

The 38-year-old Wainwright is 3-0 with a sparkling 0.45 ERA in three starts this month. The right-hander struck out seven in six innings in a 10-0 victory over Milwaukee on Friday.

HOMER VS THE ROYALS

Right-hander Homer Bailey will pitch for the Athletics for a second time against his former Royals team in the clubs' series finale, opposite lefty Danny Duffy. Bailey is 6-2 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 starts since the July 14 trade. Bailey was the winning pitcher in a 19-4 victory at Kansas City on Aug. 26. He worked 5 1/3 effective innings in a 3-2 victory at Houston in his previous start Thursday.

STANTON AND THE YANKEES

Giancarlo Stanton is expected to return to the New York Yankees on Wednesday or Thursday. The slugger has been limited to nine games this year because of injuries. The 2017 NL MVP will see time at designated hitter and left field, an unsettled position for much of the season. The 29-year-old Stanton, in his second season with the Yankees, had been working out at the team's minor league complex in Tampa, Florida.

SANDY ROLLING

Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara looks to continue his solid stretch when he takes the mound in Arizona. Alcantara has a 2.49 ERA over his last seven starts, working at least six innings in each outing. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a 1-0 loss at San Francisco on Friday. Mike Leake pitches for the Diamondbacks. He is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in September.

Stop me if you?ve heard this before. Gerrit Cole is on a hot streak. Yeah, didn?t think so. Jokes aside, he?s doing it again. The Cy Young candidate has a 0.82 ERA and a 0.55 WHIP and has racked up a ridiculous 40 punchouts compared to just four walks in his last three starts. Cole and the Astros are crazy, stupid, -495 home favorites against the Rangers.

SLUMPING

Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs (13-10, 4.59 ERA, $535):
The Cubs are in an extremely tight race for the postseason and if they want to extend their playoff appearances to five consecutive seasons, Lester is going to have be the bulldog he is known for being at this time of year.

The veteran left-hander has allowed 15 runs (12 earned) on 18 hits in his last two starts, and one of those was against the lowly-Pirates. Lester will look to bounce back against the Reds tonight, where the Cubbies are -155 home faves.

3 STRIKES

A DUFF-Y FOR HOMER

There is an unexpected pitcher?s duel this afternoon in Oakland as Danny Duffy and the Royals take on Homer Bailey and the A?s. Duffy is in his best stretch of the season, pitching to a 2.45 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over his last three starts. Meanwhile, Bailey hasn?t allowed more than three earned runs in each of his last six starts, resulting in a 2.25 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. The Under 9.5 is worth a look this afternoon.

BLUE BIRDS BLEED GREEN (AGAIN)

As we said yesterday, The Blue Jays are one of those rare teams with underlying betting value in September, and they didn?t disappoint last night, notching an 8-4 victory against the Orioles. The Jays have good value once again, as slight +100 road dogs tonight in Baltimore. Clay Buchholz gets the call for the Jays and the veteran has been mostly good since returning from injury and has loved facing the Orioles throughout his career. The Orioles counter with Dylan Bundy, and while he has had success against the Jays, you never know when you?re going to get an ugly outing from him. Keep riding with the Jays.

A STEEP PRICE

As mentioned above, the Astros are huge -495 home favorites tonight against the Rangers, but bettors should think twice if they are looking for a quick return on an easy favorite. MLB moneyline favorites of -300 or greater are 42-17, but have cost bettors $462 dollars (based on $100 wagers). While moneyline favorites of -400 or great are just 4-2 costing bettors $107. And the team that owns both of those losses? The Astros.

Yankees lose to Angels 3-2, miss chance to clinch AL East
September 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Relief pitcher Adam Ottavino sailed a 30-foot throw home on Albert Pujols' tiebreaking chopper, and the sloppy New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Wednesday night with a chance to clinch the AL East.

New York could still lock up the division title if Tampa Bay loses to the Los Angeles Dodgers later Wednesday. The Yankees would have been assured a playoff spot if Cleveland had lost, but the Indians beat Detroit 3-2 in 10 innings.

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton stung the ball in his return from injury and CC Sabathia got an emotional send-off in his final regular-season start in the Bronx, yet New York dropped to 99-54 after entering the night tied with Houston for the majors' best record.

New York hasn't won the AL East since 2012, the third-longest drought for the club since divisions were formed in 1969.

Angels right-hander Luke Bard (2-2) struck out five over three perfect innings of relief. David Fletcher had three hits and Pujols added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Los Angeles left 13 on base.

Defensive whiz Andrelton Simmons dived to his backhand at shortstop to rob Luke Voit of a hit in the ninth, helping Hansel Robles complete his 22nd save

Aaron Judge hit 24th homer during an injury-shortened season. Ottavino (6-5) took the loss.

CARDINALS 5, NATIONALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright outpitched Max Scherzer, Dexter Fowler made a sensational catch and NL Central-leading St. Louis beat Washington.

Wainwright (13-9) limited the Nationals to an unearned run in seven innings. He gave up eight hits, struck out three and walked one.

Trailing by four, and with two on with one out in the eighth. The Nats' Asdrubal Cabrera hit a drive off Andrew Miller that had the distance to leave the park, but Fowler jumped and reached far over the wall to make the grab.

Tommy Edman and Matt Wieters homered for St. Louis, which began the day with a two-game division lead over Chicago and Milwaukee.

The Nationals started the day with a 1 +-game lead over the Cubs and Brewers in the NL wild-card race. Washington has lost nine of its last 14.

Scherzer (10-7) gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11.

Carlos Martinez got four outs for his 21st save in 24 chances.

ASTROS 3, RANGERS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out 10 batters, including his 300th of the season, in eight strong innings, Yuli Gurriel and Jose Altuve homered and Houston beat Texas to lock up a postseason berth.

Houston won its fifth straight and 100th game of the season, becoming one of six teams in major league history to win at least 100 games in three straight seasons.

The Astros (100-53) have the best record in the majors and can clinch the AL West as early as Friday with a win and loss by Oakland.

Cole (18-5) allowed two runs on six hits in earning his 14th straight win. He became the third Astros pitcher to reach 300 strikeouts in a season, joining J.R. Richard, who had 313 in 1979 and 303 in 1978, and Mike Scott, who struck out 306 in 1986.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 35th save.

Willie Calhoun scored on a throwing error and Ronald Guzman hit a solo homer for Texas.

Kolby Allard (4-1) allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in five innings. The Rangers have lost five straight.

PADRES 2, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Dinelson Lamet struck out a career-high 14 and Kirby Yates fanned pinch-hitter Ryan Braun with a runner on second base to close out San Diego'S over playoff-contending Milwaukee.

The Brewers, who had won four in a row, began the day tied with the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Rookie Seth Mejias-Brean hit his first career home run as the Padres ended a six-game losing streak.

Lamet (3-5) pitched six innings, giving up three hits.

Keston Hiura connected off Lamet in the sixth for his 17th home run of the season.

METS 7, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Pete Alonso hit his major league-leading 49th homer and drew a bases-loaded walk during a four-run rally in the ninth inning that sent New York over Colorado.

New York closed to three games behind the Cubs and Brewers for the second NL wild card when both teams lost later in the day. After winning two of three at Coors Field, the Mets have 10 games left this season starting with a three-game series in Cincinnati that opens Friday.

Jeff McNeil also went deep for the Mets, who set a franchise record with 225 home runs this season.

Jairo Diaz (5-4) took the loss. Seth Lugo (7-4) earned the win.

Rookie Sam Hilliard hit two home runs for the Rockies, connecting both times off Noah Syndergaard.

Syndergaard went 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits and striking out six.

INDIANS 2, TIGERS 1, 10TH INNING

CLEVELAND (AP) - Yasiel Puig hit an RBI single off the top of the right field wall with two outs in the 10th inning and Cleveland kept up its playoff push, beating Detroit.

The Indians entered the day one-half game behind Tampa Bay for the second AL wild-card spot. Cleveland stayed 2 + games behind wild-card leader Oakland.

Cleveland beat the Tigers for the 16th straight time this season. The Tigers, with the worst record in the majors at 45-106, matched their longest losing streak against an opponent. They also dropped 16 in a row to Minnesota in 2002-03.

Puig's bases-loaded drive off Jose Cisnero (0-4) came after an intentional walk to Carlos Santana. It was the fourth hit of the game and the fifth career walkoff plate appearance by Puig.

Adam Cimber (6-3) earned the win for Cleveland, which did not allow a hit after the fourth inning.

PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer, Zach Eflin pitched seven solid innings and Philadelphia won its second straight game over Atlanta.

Atlanta has lost three in a row for the first time since July 16-18, but still leads the division by nine games. With nine games left in the regular season, the Braves can clinch their second consecutive NL East title with either two wins, two Washington losses or a combination of one each.

The Phillies, eliminated from the division race, are three games behind the Cubs and Brewers in the race for the second wild card.

Eflin (9-12) gave up just an unearned run and five hits.

Julio Teheran (10-10) allowed three hits and four runs - three earned - in five-plus innings.

Hector Neris earned his second save of the series and 28th in 34 chances with a perfect ninth.

WHITE SOX 3, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Held without a hit until the sixth inning, Minnesota managed only three in the loss to Chicago.

In the AL Central, Minnesota is four games ahead of Cleveland after the Indians beat Detroit 2-1 in 10 innings. The surprising Twins still have a magic number of seven to clinch their first division title since 2010.

Zack Collins homered and Yoan Moncada doubled twice for the White Sox. A trio of Chicago pitchers combined to take a no-hitter into the sixth.

Eddie Rosario had an RBI single for Minnesota. Jake Odorizzi (14-7) struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings but lost for the second time in nine starts. He allowed two earned runs and seven hits.

Jace Fry (3-4) pitched 1 2/3 innings to get the win for Chicago. Alex Colome earned his 28th save in 30 chances with a perfect ninth.

MARINERS 4, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kyle Lewis hit his fifth home run since debuting Sept. 10, Tom Murphy homered and Seattle beat Pittsburgh for its fourth straight win.

Dario Agrazal (4-5) allowed the four runs and six hits while striking out six in five innings.

Tommy Milone (4-9) relieved Justin Dunn to start the third inning for Seattle before allowing two hits and using just 51 pitches to get through five shutout innings. Matt Magill earned his fifth save.

The Pirates lost a fifth straight game since winning three of four from Sept. 9-12. They have been outscored 57-16 during the losing streak, including 10-1 in the first two games of this series.

ATHLETICS 1, ROYALS 0, 11 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mark Canha hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning and Oakland edged Kansas City to hold its lead atop the AL wild-card race.

The Athletics, who have won seven of eight, began the day two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot. Cleveland was a half-game behind the Rays.

Starters Homer Bailey of the A's and Danny Duffy of the Royals each pitched seven sharp innings. Bailey allowed three hits and struck out 11, while Duffy gave up two hits and fanned six.

Jurickson Profar drew a leadoff walk from Jesse Hahn (0-1) in the 11th and stole second. After striking out Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman, Hahn intentionally walked Matt Olson to face Canha.

J.B. Wendelken (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, MARLINS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Mike Leake worked effectively into the seventh inning, Domingo Leyba had two RBIs and Arizona beat Miami.

Arizona is 4 + games behind the Cubs abd Brewers in the race for the NL's second wild card.

The Diamondbacks bounced back by jumping on Sandy Alcantara (5-14) early to keep their slim playoff chances alive with nine games to go.

Abraham Almonte hit his first career leadoff home run and Christian Walker added a solo shot for Arizona.

Leake (12-11) gave up solo homers to Austin Dean and Starlin Castro, but limited the rest of the damage in 6 2/3 innings. Archie Bradley retired the final four batters for his 15th save.

Leake gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out four.

GIANTS 11, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Stephen Vogt hit a two-run homer and San Francisco gave Bruce Bochy his 2,000th career victory as a manager in the majors.

Bochy became just the 11th manager to achieve 2,000 wins, reaching the milestone with just 10 games remaining for the Giants before their skipper retires at the end of the season.

He won 951 games while managing the San Diego Padres over 12 seasons and is 1,049-1,047 in 13 years with San Francisco, which won three World Series titles with Bochy at the helm.

Jeff Samardzija didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and the Giants gave him plenty of offense, tagging eight Boston pitchers for 15 hits while winning for the second straight night at Fenway Park.

Rafael Devers hit his 30th home run and Jackie Bradley Jr. homered for the second straight night for the Red Sox.

Vogt finished with four RBIs for the Giants. Samardzija (11-12) pitched six innings, holding Boston to one run on two hits and four walks. He struck out two.

BLUE JAYS 11, ORIOLES 10

BALTIMORE (AP) - Randal Grichuk hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning, and Toronto rebounded from an ineffective start by Clay Buchholz to rally past Baltimore.

Grichuk's 30th home run highlighted a six-run ninth that began with Toronto trailing 9-5. The shot came off Miguel Castro (1-3), who was charged with all six runs.

Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left in the ninth after being shaken up making a hard slide into second base.

Brock Stewart (4-0) worked the eighth and Derek Law finished for his fifth save.

Jonathan Villar and Anthony Santander homered to give Baltimore an early lead.

It was another disappointing outing by Buchholz. He allowed 10 hits, seven for extra bases, in 3 2/3 innings and left with a 6.48 ERA.

REDS 3, CUBS 2, 10 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Iglesias had an RBI double in the 10th inning and five Cincinnati pitchers combined for a four-hitter as the Reds recorded their second straight win over the playoff-contending Chicago.

The Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers trail the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals by three games. Chicago and Milwaukee are tied for the second NL wild-card spot, 1+ games behind the Washington Nationals, who hold the first wild card.

Chicago opens a four-game series against St. Louis on Thursday night at Wrigley Field.

With two outs and none on in the top of the 10th, Cincinnati's Aristides Aquino started the winning rally against James Norwood (0-1) with a single to left. After Aquino advanced on a wild pitch, Josh VanMeter walked, putting runners on first and second. Iglesias then doubled to right to score Aquino with the go-ahead run.

Amir Garrett (5-3) struck out Kyle Schwarber to end the ninth and Raisel Iglesias worked around a one-out double in the 10th for his 33rd save. Nico Horner lined out to right to end it.

Cincinnati slugger Eugenio Suarez hit his 48th homer, one behind Pete Alonso of the New York Mets for the major league lead.

RAYS 8, DODGERS 7 11 INNINGS

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) From Liam Stack (this story made me laugh):
A New Zealand man brought an emotional support clown to a meeting where he knew he?d be fired. The clown blew up balloons and folded them into a series of animals throughout the meeting, then mimed crying when the man was handed a pink slip.

Didn?t help; the guy still lost his job.

12) From Russell Baxter: 72 of the 106 Super Bowl teams started that season 2-0; only four of them started 0-2.

11) Atlanta Falcons play their first nine games this year in domes; their first of only three outdoor games is Week 11 (Nov 17) at Carolina.

10) From Ralph Michaels: Since 2016, under is 18-9 in college football games that had a total of 40 or less points.

9) Colts, Eagles and Packers are pretty banged up; they all scrapped their traditional Wednesday practices this week, and had walk-throughs instead.

8) David Fales would appear to be the Jets? new backup QB; he?s thrown 48 passes in three NFL games, two for Miami in 2017 (with Adam Gase as coach) and one for Chicago in 2016. Fales played college ball at San Jose State.

7) Football stuff:
? Chiefs? LT Eric Fisher is having core muscle surgery, is out this week.

6) Last time there was a week of NFL games where no team scored 30+ points was Week 9 in 1995, so long ago that the Houston Oilers won a game that week.

5) Pirates? closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested in Pittsburgh Tuesday on charges of soliciting a child, computer pornography and providing obscene material to minors.

4) Giancarlo Stanton?s over/under home run total for this year was 41.5; wth 11 days left in this season, he has one homer and seven RBI.

3) A?s 1, Royals 0 (11)? Mark Canha got the walk-off hit on Mark Canha T-shirt Day and Chad Pinder made a great catch in left field to save two runs as Oakland won its 92nd game this year.

2) Four teams that got to the Super Bowl after starting season 0-2:
? 1993? Cowboys (won Super Bowl)
? 1996? Patriots (lost)
? 2001? Patriots (won)
? 2007? Giants (won)

1) From Annie Karni of the New York Times:

?Sean Spicer got a minimum of $125,000 to be on Dancing With the Stars, and the pay goes up with every week he stays on.?

We live in a very strange world.
