Dinero Tracker - Feb. 22
February 22, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 0-0 | NCAA BB: 16-9

It was a busy Hump day over here despite the absence of NBA action for one last night. Louisville got embarrassed by Duke, Minnesota avoided a 10th straight loss and USC pulled away in its grudge match at Colorado. You won't read about those games below, but plenty of others since we went all over the board for a profitable day that still has action stuck in limbo. I'm on Seton Hall plus a point and under 148 in a game that was suspended due to condensation on the Dunkin' Donuts Arena floor with 13:03 remaining. The Pirates lead 56-47, so that total looks worrisome. Here's Wednesday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

THURSDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: BYU/Portland OVER 137.5

Elijah Bryant really emerged for the Cougars once Moutntain West play began but has slumped some of late, scoring more than 14 points only once over his last five outings while shooting 21-for-54 (38 percent). We'll see if facing a Portland squad that he toasted for 22 points and a career-best 15 rebounds can get him to perk up, especially with Yoeli Childs healthy and running next to him following an injury scare. Portland has become reliable against the number under Terry Porter in 2018, coming in 8-1-1 against the spread over its last 10. This is in part due to the fact he often leaves starters in for a little cosmetic love, but his team has really done a nice job hanging around with most everyone in the WCC in February. Expect the over to come in here.

WEDNESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Boise State -7

This season has been a complete nightmare for the Colorado State, so don't expect a very productive ending to its season. Coming off a blowout loss at Fresno, the Rams won't be able to sustain 40 minutes of good basketball in order to hang around with the visiting Broncos, who have designs on at least a second-place finish in the Mountain West since Nevada is unlikely to be caught. Lay the points and ride Boise State.

Result: It warms my heart to release a stress-free freebie into the world to be shared among you. The Broncos were up 50-29 at the break and extended the lead to as much as 42 points in handing Colorado State its worst loss in over nine years, prevailing 87-54.

WEDNESDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Virginia Tech -3.5

Although the Tigers made a run at Duke on Sunday, missing both Shelton Mitchell and Donte Grantham appears to be too much to overcome. I don't like the Tigers' chances on the road against the deeper Hokies, who should get a big game from Justin Bibbs to persevere here. Ride Virginia Tech and lay 3.5 points, guaranteed.

Result: After hanging around for most of this one, Virginia Tech took control with a 20-5 second-half run before surviving a few late missed free-throws to cover since the Tigers came up empty on their backdoor-chasing 3-pointers. Clemson head coach Brad Brownell admitted that his team just isn't the same without Mitchell and Grantham. Mitchell should be back from a concussion at some point, but the fact the Hokies won and covered despite shooting less than 35 percent tells you how tough the going is for the Tigers, who have now dropped three straight.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Georgia/South Carolina UNDER 131

This matchup features two of the SEC's top forwards in Yante Maten and Chris Silva. The first meeting saw Maten square 25 points while Silva went just 3-for-10, but the Gamecocks ended up with 35 free-throw attempts on the road to overcome 6-for-24 3-point shooting in a 64-57 win in Athens. Turnovers were the major culprit for the Dawgs at home, so they can't be trusted here even though taking the points with a team that has pulled off huge wins over Florida and Tennessee has them trending in the right direction. The Gamecocks put their best foot forward against Auburn, and there's no question Frank Martin will have them working hard on defense in what's likely to be a low-possession game. Ride the under.

Result: This was far more comfortable a cover than it probably should've been, since I anticipated the score being closer down the stretch, keeping possessions to a minimum. Instead, the Dawgs lost control just before the break as South Carolina used a 13-3 run to build a 42-27 lead, storming off the floor after a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Gamecocks then pulled away again in the coaching stages, but Georgia didn't really play the foul game over the last two minutes, allowing seconds to harmlessly tick away in a 66-57 result that probably should've rendered a few more points.

UPSET CITY

The pick: George Mason +8

Otis Livingston II provided the Patriots' best moment of the season against the Hawks, beating them on a 30-footer at the buzzer in the first meeting. St. Joseph's has won consecutive games, which means that this spread is inflated as a result. Both teams are light on depth, which means this one should be heavy on runs. I recommend taking the points and riding George Mason.

Result: The Patriots beat the Hawks as the clock struck :00 for the second time in six weeks, getting a 25-footer from Ian Boyd to help prevent OT in a 79-76 win. George Mason had blown all of what had been a 20-point second-half lead before Boyd's heroics help cash what had been a +300 money-line win for most of the day. You know Mason probably loses by like a dozen if they play an extra five minutes, so the shot was a blessing.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: TCU -5

The already short-handed Cyclones officially found out they would be without versatile forward Solomon Young and do-it-all wing Nick Weiler-Babb, so guards Lindell Wiggington and Donovan Jackson have to do the heavy lifting from here on out. The Horned Frogs should be able to take advantage of a team that has already lost four of five, especially since they're trying to get back even in Big 12 play and can really use this one. Back TCU and lay the points.

Result: This one was wild down the stretch, as the Horned Frogs came up huge at the free-throw line to help deliver this cover since we needed every single make in an 89-83 road win at Iowa State. Desmond Bane scored 27 points, putting in a crucial late dunk and some big free-throws to help the Horned Frogs hold on. The Tennessee/Florida finish was similar since the Gators were getting 4 points, but that one didn't go my way. The game never got closer than 3 points over the final four minutes as Gators PG Chris Chiozza failed to finish off a would-be 3-point play with 24.5 seconds left. Florida then foolishly then fouled Lamonte Bearden, who never misses, and Keith Stone came up empty on a 3-pointer with a few seconds left that would've likely locked in at least a push.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Alabama -8

The Crimson Tide should be able to give the Tigers a battle inside Auburn Arena, taking advantage of a depleted frontcourt that has now lost Anfernee McLemore in addition to their two most talented big men, who never were declared eligible. The Crimson Tide should be able to roll with the punches enough to be within range for Collin Sexton to steal this late. Take the points and ride Alabama.

Result: This looked great as tip-off approached after news that the Tigers would also be down wing Mustapha Heron due to a stomach bug. Auburn was depleted, but it made no difference, as the team was fueled by the energy of a raucous crowd and absolutely rolled the Tide, 90-71. The Tigers destroyed Avery Johnson's defense, which looked a step slow all night, getting huge games from point guard Jared Harper and Chuma Okeke, who will have to come up huge as the primary big going forward. Auburn folks were so geeked up that they rolled Toomer's Corner, a tradition typically saved just for football.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Villanova -19

The Blue Demons have gone all season without playing back-to-back true road games but must do so tonight, battling the slumping league favorites, who welcome back Phil Booth on the heels of a huge win over Xavier in Cincy to snap out of their funk. DePaul doesn't have a chance here. Lay the points and ride Villanova to win by 20-plus.

Result: Booth scored 14 points in his return, helping fortify the bench in 16 minutes of action as 'Nova dominated, winning 93-62 on Senior Night behind Mikal Bridges 27 points. I held back on riding the over due to how lopsided I thought this would be, but the Wildcats got buckets from senior walk-ons Denny Grace and Tom Leibig to push the total over 154.

B]Armadillo: Friday's six-pack[/B]

Six top prospects for the Atlanta Braves:

1) Ronald Acuna, OF? Hit .344 in 221 AB?s in AAA last season

2) Luiz Gohara, P? Was 1-3, 4.91 in five major league starts LY.

3) Mike Soroka, P? Was 11-8, 2.75 in 26 starts in Southern League LY.

5) Ian Anderson, P? Turns 20 in May; went to HS here in the Albany area.

6) Austin Riley, 3B? HS kid from Mississippi hit .315 in AA ball LY.

9) Cristian Pache, OF? Hit .290 in first 176 pro games, but with no home runs.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Drexel 85, Delaware 83? Dragons trailed this game 53-19 with 2:36 left in first half; this is the biggest comeback ever in D-I college basketball, beating out a Duke-Tulane game from way back in 1950, when the Green Wave blew a 32-point lead.

12) Arizona 75, Oregon State 65 OT? Wildcats lost Allonzo Trier earlier in the day to a failed drug test, rallied late to win here, as Beavers scored only one basket in last 14:08 of game. Trier was suspended for 19 games last year for a similar offense. Bad beat if you had the Beavers, +5.

11) Memphis 91. Houston 85? Cougars? 5-game win streak ends; three of their six losses are to teams outside top 100. Memphis won its last three games after a 5-7 start in AAC play.

10) This was the 1970 Final Four:
UCLA (in between the Alcindor/Walton eras)
St Bonaventure (Bob Lanier at C, but he got hurt in regional final)
Jacksonville (Artis Gilmore at C)
New Mexico State (Sam Lacey at C)

Imagine those three schools making the Final Four today, all with centers who would have good pro careers? Times have changed a lot.

9) South Dakota State 76, South Dakota 72? Jackrabbits clinch regular season title in Summit League, which doesn?t mean all that much, since tournament is played at a neutral site. State outscored South Dakota 19-11 over the last 6:04 of this game.

8) Utah 84, UCLA 78? Utes played without Sedrick Barefield but won anyway; it is their fifth win in a row- their home game with USC Saturday is a big bubble-type game. UCLA won six of last eight games but lost four of their last five road games.

7) Seton Hall 89, Providence 77? Game that started Wednesday in the Dunkin? Donuts Center was finished Thursday afternoon, in the Friars? on-campus gym, because of condensation on the court in the big arena. Pirates went 24-35 on foul line in a big road win for them.

6) Upsets of the Day:
Green Bay (+10.5) 96, Oakland 90
Rice (+7.5) 79, Florida Atlantic 76 OT
Memphis (+7) 91, Houston 85

5) Florida International 69, North Texas 68? Nine of North Texas? 15 C-USA games have been decided by 4 or less points, or in OT. All 15 games were decided by 7 or less, or in OT.

4) Virginia will be the #1 seed in the ACC tournament for the third time in five years next month; in the 60 years before that, Virginia was #1 seed in the ACC tournament once.

3) Dick Vitale has season tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays, right near the 3rd base dugout, but he called on Rays? owner Stu Sternberg to sell the Rays this week.

?If you don?t want to own a team and give the fans a chance (to see competitive baseball), sell the team. There?ll be a buyer in a heartbeat.?

2) Oregon 75, Arizona State 68? ASU was 12-0 on Christmas, but now they?re 7-8 in Pac-12, in 8th place in a 12-team league.

1) One of the things I?ve learned in retirement is that weekday television is incredibly bad, but not in March. Spring training games start today, and that is?..tremendous.

Friday's Wagers
February 23, 2018

**Harvard at Princeton**

-- When these bitter rivals collided Feb. 9 at Lavietes Pavilion in Boston, Harvard (14-11 straight up, 11-9-1 against the spread) raced out to a 35-20 halftime lead and coasted to a 66-51 win as a 1.5-point home favorite. Christian Juzang led the Crimson with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal. Seth Towns was limited to 24 minutes of playing time before fouling out, but he still got into double figures with 13 points. Richmond Aririguzoh scored a team-best nine points for the Tigers.

-- As of early this morning, most books had this Ivy League showdown listed as a pick ?em. A few offshore shops had Princeton (11-14 SU, 7-14 ATS) installed as a one-point ?chalk? with a total of 130.

-- Princeton has been an immense disappointment this year, but it can still right the ship and salvage the season with a strong finish in the last four games of the regular season. The top four teams in the Ivy League make the conference?s tournament, and the Tigers are one of six schools vying for the final two spots. Harvard and Penn are atop the loop?s standing with identical 9-1 records. Yale is in third place at 5-5, while Brown, Cornell and Columbia have 4-6 conference ledgers. Princeton is 3-7 against Ivy League foes.

-- Princeton has lost six straight games both SU and ATS, including a pair of losses in overtime(s). Four of the defeats have come by double-digit margins, however. Mitch Henderson?s squad lost 107-101 at Cornell last Friday in three overtimes, and then it took a woodshed beating by an 85-60 score Saturday at Columbia. Amir Bell had 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, one blocked shots and three assists without a turnover.

-- Princeton is No. 217 in the RPI Rankings, posting just one win over an RPI Top 150 opponent. The Tigers won 103-93 at Southern Cal. In other notable non-conference contests, the Tigers lost 85-75 at Butler and went down in neutral-court games vs. Middle Tennessee (69-67) and Miami (80-52).

-- Harvard is No. 136 in the RPI with only one victory over an RPI Top-150 foe. Tommy Amaker?s squad has a home win over Penn (#138) but lost both of its games to the Top 50 (vs. Saint Mary?s and at Kentucky).

-- Harvard brings a five-game winning streak to New Jersey. The Crimson has a 3-1 spread record in its past four contests, taking the money in Saturday?s 64-49 win over Yale as a 4.5-point home favorite. Chris Lewis led the winners with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Seth Towns added 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Juzang had 13 points and eight assists.

-- Harvard has lost outright in nine of 14 road games, going 7-6 ATS.

-- Harvard star guard Bryce Aiken is ?questionable? tonight due to a knee injury that?s had him sidelined for the past five games. The Ivy League?s 2017 Rookie of the Year is averaging 14.1 PPG. Towns averages a team-best 15.8 points and 5.0 RPG while making 44.3 percent of his treys. Lewis (12.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG) has a team-high 44 blocked shots and is shooting at a 60.0 percent clip from the field.

-- Princeton is 6-4 SU and 3-4 ATS at home this season.

-- The ?under? is 11-10 overall for Princeton, 4-3 in its home games.

-- The ?under? is 14-7 overall for Harvard, 9-4 in its home games.

-- The ?under? has cashed tickets at 10-4 clip in the past 14 games of this rivalry.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

**Ohio State at Indiana**

-- As of early this morning, most books had Ohio State (23-7 SU, 15-13 ATS) listed as a 1.5-point road favorite.

-- Ohio St. has compiled a 5-2 record both SU and ATS in seven true road assignments.

-- These old-school rivals squared off in Columbus on Jan. 30 with Ohio State collecting a 71-56 win as a 10-point home ?chalk.? The 127 combined points darted ?under? the 139.5-point total. Jae?Sean Tate led OSU with 16 points and six rebounds, while Keita Bates-Diop stuffed the box scored 13 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. The Buckeyes limited IU?s Robert Johnson to merely two points, though we should credit him for four assists without a turnover. Juwan Morgan had 15 points and six boards for the Hoosiers.

-- Chris Holtmann?s club avoided a three-game losing streak by thumping Rutgers 79-52 in Tuesday?s Big 10 showdown. Ohio State took the cash as a 14.5-point home favorite, while the 131 combined points tipped ?over? the 129-point total. The Buckeyes had lost their two previous games at Penn State (79-56) and at Michigan (74-62). C.J. Jackson hit 8-of-12 shots in a game-high 18-point effort, while Kaleb Wesson finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.

-- Ohio State is No. 20 in the RPI Rankings and No. 16 in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top 25. The Buckeyes have posted a 3-3 record against the Top 25, a 3-5 mark versus the Top 50 and an 8-7 ledger against the Top 100. They own home wins over the likes of Michigan, Michigan St., Northeastern, Maryland, Nebraska and William & Mary, in addition to a road victory at Purdue and a neutral-court scalp of Stanford.

-- Indiana (16-13 SU, 17-12 ATS) owns a 12-5 record both SU and ATS at home. This will be IU?s third game as a home underdog. The Hoosiers are winless with a 2-1 spread record in three previous such spots.

-- Indiana saw its four-game winning streak and 5-0 ATS surge snapped in Tuesday?s 66-57 loss at Nebraska as a three-point underdog. Johnson had 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the losing effort. Justin Smith had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Morgan finished with 13 points and nine boards.

-- Morgan paces IU in scoring (16.5 PPG), rebounding (7.3 RPG) and blocked shots (1.4 BPG). Johnson is averaging 14.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

-- Indiana is No. 106 in the RPI due to a winless record in seven games against the RPI Top 25. The Hoosiers are 3-9 against the RPI Top 100. They have notable home wins over Penn State and Maryland, a pair of bubble teams, but a neutral-court victory over Notre Dame hasn?t aged well.

-- The ?under? is 17-11-1 overall for the Hoosiers, 9-8 in their home outings. They?ve seen the ?under? go 13-3-1 in their past 17 games.

-- The ?under? has been a huge money maker in Ohio State games, cashing at a 20-8 overall clip. The Buckeyes have seen the ?under? go 4-3 in their road games.

-- Fox Sports 1 will provide the broadcast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Arizona star guard Allonzo Trier was declared ineligible Thursday by the NCAA for testing positive for a PED. The school is appealing the ruling. Trier missed the first 19 games of last season for a failed PED test. The junior guard from Seattle is the Pac-12?s second-leading scorer (19.6 PPG). Trier was in street clothes on the bench during the Wildcats? 75-65 overtime win at Oregon St. last night. Gamblers taking the Beavers (+5) took a brutal beat with the home underdogs. Bettors on the ?over? (141) were teased when the combined score hit 140 points, while ?under? supporters picked up the rightful victory.

-- Purdue?s Carsen Edwards dropped 40 points on Illinois last night in a 93-86 non-covering win as a nine-point road favorite. Edwards drained 4-of-8 attempts from long distance and 14-of-16 at the FT line. Dakota Mathias finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Leron Black had a team-best 28 points for the Illini.

-- A likely NCAA Tournament team is going to add a guaranteed lottery pick in the next week or two. Missouri?s Michael Porter Jr. was cleared to practice Thursday. The prized recruit left the Tigers? season opener and had to have back surgery in November.

-- Houston had its five-game winning streak snapped in last night?s 91-85 loss at Memphis. Tubby Smith?s squad beat the Cougars as a six-point underdog to hook up money-line supporters with a +225 return. Jimario Rivers and Raynere Thornton scored 21 apiece for the Tigers, who have won three in a row both SU and ATS to improve to 17-11 overall. All three of those Memphis victories came from the underdog role.

-- The nation?s best ATS are Nebraska (21-7), Auburn (19-7), Virginia (17-6-1), Xavier (20-9) and Canisius (19-8-1).

-- If you took Hawaii and went to bed last night, you?ll wake up a happy camper. The Warriors covered the number in a 74-63 win over Long Beach State as 4.5-point home favorites. The 137 combined points fell ?under? the 148-point tally.

-- There are a pair of late televised games tonight: Western Michigan at Ball State (9:00 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2) and Manhattan at Iona (9:00 p.m., ESPNU). As of early this morning, the Gaels were favored by seven with a total of 144 points. The Cardinals were listed as five-point home ?chalk? vs. the Broncos, while the total was 146. Ball St. has won five games in a row and is 3-1 ATS in its last four contests. Western Michigan is mired in a 2-7-1 ATS slump.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 23
February 23, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 2-4 | NCAA BB: 12-12

The NBA returned with underdogs barking loudly. Of the six favorites, only the Hornets won and covered, while the Cavs and Magic lost outright. The Bulls and Kings flirted with upsets after Philly and OKC blew double-digit first-half leads, so the focus to put together 48 minutes clearly wasn't there. I was laying points in both and paid the price. The night in college ended poorly, resulting in a .500 finish to end our run of winning days this week. Here is Thursday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

FRIDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Celtics/Pistons UNDER 205

Brad Stevens has gotten the better of Stan Van Gundy in five of their last seven games. It's helped to have the better team, but since their first two meetings went OT and both coaches want their teams to lock down defensively after getting sloppy before the break, there's definitely a competitive vibe in play here over your typical first outing after All-Star. Marcus Smart returns to help the Celtics try and shore things up, so I expect this game to see defense tighten up and tempo to slow down. Ride the under.

Result: The freebie's winning streak ended while most of you slept. It was frustrating to see a Pilots team that has extended games for months now completely reverse course in letting precious seconds roll off the clock in a 72-60 loss. If Portland had been as aggressive as it has been in securing cosmetic results over the course of WCC play, the foul game would've delivered the extra possessions we ultimately needed.

THURSDAY'S LOCK

The pick: South Dakota State ML -140

The first meeting between these teams produced an 87-68 loss in Vermillion, so if the Coyotes can sweep the series, they?ll be the No. 1 seed in the Summit League tournament. Don?t expect that to happen. It?s Senior Day for key guys Reid Tellinghuisen, Skyler Flatten, Ian Theisen and Lane Severyn, not to mention star forward Mike Daum should he choose to leave. There?s no way the Jackrabbits lose this game. Ride South Dakota State on the money line, guaranteed.

Result: The Jackrabbits came through, winning 76-72 to capture the Summit. The reason why I refused to lay the 2.5/3 points in a game of this magnitude should've been evident if you watched how this ended, since there were multiple reviews in the final minute and the final possessions saw the cover change hands despite SDSU continuing to hold the lead it enjoyed throughout. Threatening to slide through the back door, the Coyotes actually trailed by just 2 points before intentionally missing the final free-throw. The Jacks ended up with enough time to inbound and add the game's final two points, delivering against the spread.

LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Thunder -7

Russell Westbrook and Paul George participated in the All-Star game but will have fresh legs for the first time in a while, rejoining forces with Carmelo Anthony and Steven Adams to try and get off to a good start post-break in Sacramento. Although Bogdan Bogdanovic is having himself a coming out party this month, fellow rookie De'Aaron Fox is now questionable with conjunctivitis, which would leave the Kings without a floor general they can trust since they moved to George Hill to the Cavs at the trade deadline. He'll likely play, but with backup Frank Mason also dealing with a heel issue, Westbrook has wounded prey to attack. Ride Oklahoma City -7, guaranteed.

Result: Oklahoma City led 44-21 after one quarter, but one of you must have started counting their money to jinx the rest of us. Don't do that. The Kings won the second and third by a 69-41 count, so despite Fox not playing and Bogdanovic scoring just four points, the Kings covered behind big games from Zach Randolph and Buddy Hield. The prospect of OT dangled one last chance in front of our faces, but Westbrook's buzzer-beater on a night where he shot 4-for-14 gave the Thunder a 110-107 win.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Santa Clara/Loyola Marymount UNDER 140.5

The Lions have struggled of late and are down Steven Haney, an elite shooter who really helped their spacing. Look for this game to lack firepower, which combined with methodical offense, should lead to enough lulls that it doesn't get to the 140-point mark. Ride the under in this WCC clash.

Result: This was in doubt only at the very end since the prospect of OT became a real possibility as Santa Clara successfully played the foul game to give itself a chance, but LMU survived 65-64.

UPSET CITY

The pick: Houston -6

The Memphis Tigers have pulled off victories at Tulane and SMU to restore hope that they can run the table given a manageable schedule. With no statement wins on their schedule, this becomes a final opportunity, but Jeremiah Martin still isn't 100 percent and Memphis lacks the depth and explosiveness to hang around with the Cougars. Rob Gray should be able to put this one away. Ride Houston.

Result: Despite Martin aggravating a hip injury and leaving in the first half, Memphis persevered on a brilliant night for Tubby Smith, who showed off his coaching skills and the fact that the team he's put together this season has stuck together throughout every obstacle. Depleted Memphis cashed over double your investment on the money line in a 91-85 upset I didn't see coming.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Louisiana/Troy OVER 155

Troy has a tendency to play at a slower tempo on the road, but has gotten very comfortable at home of late, scoring over 80 points in each of their last four outings at Trojan Arena. Look for them to give the Ragin' Cajuns a game here, likely leading to this game being extended late in what should end up being a higher-scoring contest than expected. Ride the over.

Result: This unfolded exactly as expected, since we needed the Trojans to continue scoring and fouling the Ragin' Cajuns in order to pull this out. Louisiana got it done at the strip to hold off Troy 81-76, draining its last two free-throws in the final seconds to secure the bag.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Cavs -5.5

LeBron James is certainly motivated with a new team around him, which by all reports produced a spirited practice as guys are ready to get after it. Meanwhile, Washington remains without John Wall for the next few weeks and will be led by first-time All-Star Bradley Beal, who has admitted he didn't get as much rest as he would've liked over the break. Since the Wizards are often so flat, I don't trust them to hang around on the road against the revitalized Cavs. Lay the points and ride Cleveland.

Result: LeBron was brilliant, but Washington took advantage of a still vulnerable Cleveland defense to pull off a 110-103 upset. Bradley Beal and Tomas Satoransky combined for 35 points and 17 assists on a night where the Wizards shared the ball beautifully to remind us all that the Cavs remain a work in progress.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Warriors/Clippers OVER 234

The Clippers aren't going to be able to defend well on the perimeter, which should spell trouble at Oracle regardless of how tired the Warriors say they are coming out of the All-Star break. L.A. has Lou Williams likely to be on the war path here after being shunned for a spot, so look for the high-scoring game that's expected to come to fruition now that it appears everyone is a go. Ride the over.

Result: It helped to get a Danilo Gallinari 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, pulling the Clips within 70-58. Although there was still work to be done in the second half, covering this huge number was executed comfortably since the teams combined for 133 points over the final 24 minutes. Golden State shot 62.7 percent, while L.A. hit half its shots, producing a 134-127 final. The teams combined to hit 25 3-pointers.

Ohio State edges Indiana in double OT
February 23, 2018

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Keita Bates-Diop finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds and C.J. Jackson made a long 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in double overtime to give No. 16 Ohio State an 80-78 victory at Indiana on Friday night.

With the win, the Buckeyes (24-7, 15-3) can claim a share of the conference crown in coach Chris Holtmann's first season - if No. 2 Michigan State loses at Wisconsin on Sunday.

Juwan Morgan scored 18 points and Robert Johnson added 17 to lead the Hoosiers (16-14, 9-9). But Johnson, playing what could be his final home game, couldn't make the dramatic half-court heave at the buzzer to win a wild game that was tighter than expected.

No. 18 RHODE ISLAND 81, DAYTON 56

KINGSTON, Rhode Island (AP) - Jeff Dowtin scored 20 points, E.C. Matthews added 18 and Rhode Island wrapped up its first outright Atlantic-10 regular-season title with a victory over Dayton.

Jared Terrell had 17 points to help the Rams (22-5, 15-1) win for the 18th time in 19 games. It was their second straight after their school-record 16-game winning streak was halted by St. Bonaventure last Friday night.

In 1980-81, the Rams tied Duquesne for a share of the conference title, their only other regular-season A-10 championship.

When the game ended, blue and white confetti - the school colors - and streamers fell from the ceiling. Terrell climbed the scorer's table, waving to the crowd.

Jalen Crutcher led the Flyers (13-15, 7-9) with 12 points.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Baltimore Orioles:

1) Austin Hays, OF? Jumped from A ball to the majors last season.

3) Chance Sisco, C? Lefty batter hit .267 in AAA last year.

4) Hunter Harvey, P? Father Bryan was a closer who had 177 MLB saves.

6) Tanner Scott, P? Allowed 45 hits in 69 IP in Eastern League LY.

9) Cedric Mullens, OF? 5-8 centerfielder who played in college for Campbell Camels.

16) DJ Stewart, OF? Was ACC Player of the Year at Florida State in 2014.

Quote of the Day
?You?d love to say, ?This is a really isolated situation,? but I think anyone that?s in this knows that it?s not. You could be probably be changing a lot of names and you could be changing on all different levels. You could be putting another name here, another name there.?
Former Indiana coach Tom Crean

Thursday?s quiz
Of the ten teams currently in the Big East, Butler is the only team yet to win a game in the Big East tournament since the league re-configured.

***************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) There is a high school QB in Alabama named Paul Tyson who has 18 college offers, but people are pretty much assuming that he will sign with the Crimson Tide.

Paul Tyson is Bear Bryant?s great-grandson. Alabama royalty.

12) I heard a schoolteacher say this on TV Thursday night:

?Red pens are traumatizing. I make corrections with purple ink.?

I?m hoping she was kidding; if kids aren?t spunky enough to get over having their work criticized with red ink, what chance will they have in the real world? It is probably best that I don?t have any kids; they?d be traumatized every 10 minutes.

Good grief, part of growing up is developing some thick skin to get through life?s ups and downs. Red ink from a high school teacher shouldn?t be much of an obstacle.

11) A Canadian women?s hockey player took off her silver medal as soon as it was placed around her neck this week; she wanted to win the gold medal, just like everyone else, but she couldn?t stand to have that reminder of her team?s losing around her neck.

That reminded me of something I read a long time ago; Hugh Durham was a basketball coach at both Florida State and Georgia; he made the Final Four at both stops, but his team finished 2nd in a Christmas tournament one year, and when someone handed him the 2nd-place trophy in the locker room, he fired it against the wall and smashed it to bits.

I was probably 10 years old when I read that; remember thinking, ?Wow, that guy is serious.? I understand it better now, but it was eye-opening back then.

10) Kentucky Fried Chicken had to close 800 of its 900 stores in the UK/Ireland for a few days last week, and for a very good reason.

They ran out of chicken. Seriously, they did.

KFC changed its delivery company, and the new company fowled up (ha!!!) its delivery schedule big-time, leaving most of the stores without chicken, which is a problem.

9) Interesting article on SI.com about how Tom Crean spent the first few months after being fired by Indiana last spring. He has gone around and visited teams in all sports, and learned from them, on different/better ways to do things.

Crean visited the Patriots, the Chargers, with Tony LaRussa and with his ESPN broadcasting duties, a lot of college basketball teams. The theme of all this is that you should never stop learning, and can always get better at your job.

8) 76-year old Jerry Glanville, who coached the Atlanta Falcons from 1985-93, is the new defense coordinator of the CFL?s Hamilton TigerCats, who are coached by June Jones III. There is a chance that Johnny Manziel might be the TiCats? QB this season, which would put them in the running to be North America?s most interesting pro football team.

7) Purdue is a really good basketball team, but they?re 0-8-1 vs spread in their last nine games, same way that Gonzaga is 2-10 vs spread in its last twelve games.

6) A?s/Mariners will open the 2019 season in Tokyo; my initial reaction to stuff like this is most always negative, but last time the A?s opened the season in Japan was 2012 and they went on to have a fantastic second half of the season and made the playoffs, so we?ll see.

5) Corey Dickerson hit .282 with 27 HR?s for Tampa Bay LY, so of course they traded him to the Pirates Thursday, for Daniel Hudson and a minor leaguer.

4) There is an agent named Jimmy Sexton who represents 11 of the 14 head football coaches in the SEC. Pretty influential guy.

3) Right now, the SEC basketball race has a 6-way tie for 3rd place at 8-7, with Kentucky one of those teams. I?m guessing the selection committee is going to have a headache sorting out all these teams with similar resumes.

2) Charles (Peanut) Tillman, an NFL cornerback for 13 years with Chicago/Carolina, is making good use of his post-NFL time. He is now an FBI agent, becoming one at age 37, the latest you can become an FBI agent. Good for him.

1? They broke ground in Las Vegas Friday on a new ballpark for the AAA Las Vegas 51?s, up in the northwest part of town, in Summerlin; Mets are leaving town after this season- they haven?t said who the new team will be.

It also snowed in Las Vegas Friday; not sure if there is a connection there or not.

Saturday's Early Tips
February 23, 2018

The final Saturday of college basketball betting action in the month of February should be a good one highlighted by a tough test on the road for the top team in the Big East and a big showdown in the Big 12 for first place in the conference standings.

No. 2 Villanova at Creighton (FOX, 2:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Villanova -7

Betting Matchup

The Wildcats followed up a huge 95-79 road win against Xavier as slight one-point favorites with Wednesday?s 93-62 romp over DePaul to cover as heavy 18.5-point favorites at home. The total went OVER in both of those games and it has gone OVER in eight of their last nine contests. Villanova is now 12-3 straight-up in the Big East with a 9-6 record against the spread. It is 6-4 ATS in 10 previous road games this season.

Junior guard Mikal Bridges scored 27 points in Wednesday?s win after putting up 25 points against Xavier. He has now surpassed his 17.1-point scoring average in each of his last three starts. Another junior guard, Phil Booth added 14 points against DePaul after missing his previous seven starts due to injury. The Wildcats? top scorer this season has been a third junior guard Jalen Brunson with 19.2 points per game. He has been held to 11 points in each of his last two games. Villanova is averaging 87.6 points a game, which is ranked first in the nation.

Creighton has slid to 8-7 SU in Big East play with losses to Xavier and Marquette as favorites at home ahead of Tuesday?s 93-70 road loss to Butler as a six-point underdog. The Bluejays are 5-10 ATS and the total has stayed UNDER in nine of their 15 conference games. They failed to cover as 13 ?-point road underdogs in a 98-78 loss to Villanova on Feb. 1 and they are 0-5 ATS in their last five games closing as underdogs and 1-7 ATS as underdogs this season.

In that first meeting against the Wildcats, senior guard Marcus Foster went 8-for-16 from the field to score a team-high 20 points. He continues to lead the Bluejays in scoring with an average of 19.8 PPG. He is shooting 49.5 percent from the field and 44.1 percent from three-point range. Creighton has four players averaging at least nine points a game as part of an 84.9-point scoring average that is ranked 10th in the nation. It is giving up an average of 74.2 points at the other end of the court.

Betting Trends

--The Wildcats are 16-6 ATS in their last 22 Saturday games and the total has gone OVER in six of their last seven games following a SU win.

--The Bluejays have failed to cover the spread in their last five games on a Saturday and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven home games.

--The home team in this Big East tilt has covered ATS in four of the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of the last six games between the two.

No. 8 Kansas at No. 6 Texas Tech (ESPN, 4:15 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Texas Tech -2

Betting Matchup

Kansas leads the Red Raiders by one game atop the Big 12 standings at 11-4 SU, but it has already lost to Texas Tech 85-73 as a 7 ?-point home favorite on Jan. 2. More recently, the Jayhawks have won their last three games SU including Monday?s 104-74 romp over Oklahoma as 8 ?-point favorites at home. This was just the second time in their last six games they covered the closing spread. The total went OVER the closing 165 ?-point line against the Sooners after staying UNDER in eight of their previous 11 contests.

All five of Kansas?s starters ended Monday?s game in double figures with Silvio De Sousa adding another 10 points off the bench. Senior guard Devonte? Graham has been the team?s leading scorer all season long with an average of 17.6 PPG and he led the way in that big win with 23 points. This was the third time in his last five starts he crossed the 20-point mark. The Jayhawks are five deep with players averaging at least 12 PPG as part of their 82.4-point scoring average.

Texas Tech blew its chance to hold the lead in the Big 12 with back-to-back road losses to Baylor and Oklahoma State as a road favorite in its last two games. This was on the heels of a SU seven-game winning streak. The Red Raiders are 10-5 SU in conference play, but they have been a tough team to bet on at times with an 8-7 record ATS. They are 2-3 ATS in their last five home games with the total going OVER in three of those games.

Freshman guard Zhaire Smith led Texas Tech in scoring with 18 points in Wednesday?s 79-71 loss to Oklahoma State as a four-point favorite. He is the second-leading scorer this season with 11.1 PPG. Senior guard Keenan Evans is the Red Raiders? leading scorer with 17.6 points, but he has been held to a combined six points in his last two games. This loss was just the second time this season Texas Tech gave up more than 78 points. It is ranked seventh in the nation in points allowed (63.1).

Betting Trends

--The Jayhawks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games on the road and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 Saturday games.

--The Red Raiders have failed to cover in their last four games coming off a SU loss and the total has stayed UNDER in 10 of their last 11 games played on Saturday.

--The home team in this matchup has gone 20-8 ATS over the past 28 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings at Texas Tech.

Saturday's Late Tips
February 23, 2018

**Missouri at Kentucky**

-- Missouri 5-star recruit Michael Porter Jr. is a guaranteed lottery pick this summer and could go No. 1 overall in the upcoming NBA Draft. In the Tigers? season opener, Porter was injured and left the game after playing only two minutes. He subsequently had to undergo back surgery in November, but he was cleared this week and practiced Thursday and Friday. In fact, Porter hasn?t been completely ruled out of Saturday?s game at Rupp Arena, although he?s unlikely to play at UK.

-- This means that a likely NCAA Tournament team ? Joe Lunardi had Missouri as a No. 7 seed in his latest edition of ?Bracketology? released Thursday morning on ESPN.com ? will be adding one of the nation?s premier players as it readies to make a push in March. Now, is Porter where he wants to be from a conditioning standpoint? Of course not. Will it take him a week or two ? presuming his back doesn?t flare up ? to get into the flow? At least that long. But if he can play 8-12 minutes in a few (out of three remaining) regular-season games and then log 12-15 per game in the SEC Tournament, then he should be able to make a positive impact. And who knows? Maybe he?d be ready to play heavy minutes in the NCAA Tournament. I know one thing. If I?m a Villanova, Duke, Virginia, Xavier, Michigan State, Auburn or any other team vying for a No. 1 or No. 2 seed, I sure as hell don?t want to have to face Missouri with both Porters in uniform as early as the Round of 32.

-- Missouri (18-10 straight up, 14-13 against the spread) is one of six SEC teams who are tied for third place with 8-7 records in conference play. These six schools along with LSU, which is 7-8 in SEC action and just one game back of the others, are vying for the third and fourth slots in the SEC Tournament. Those coveted positions guarantee a double bye at this year?s SEC Tournament that?s being played in St. Louis for the first time. That means those teams wouldn?t play until Friday and would play a maximum of three total games if they make the finals.

-- Kentucky (19-9 SU, 12-16 ATS) is a five seed in Lunardi?s latest, slotted to play the winner of a First Four game between Syracuse and USC. If UK were to advance, the survivor of a 4/13 Gonzaga-East Tennessee State showdown would next for the Wildcats.

-- Since losing four games in a row SU and dropping five straight ATS, Kentucky has responded with back-to-back wins vs. Alabama and at Arkansas. The ?Cats pulled away late to top Alabama 81-71 as four-point home ?chalk? last Saturday, while they trounced Arkansas 87-72 as five-point underdogs at Bud Walton Arena on Tuesday. Kevin Knox scored 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two steals to pace UK. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists compared to two turnovers, while P.J. Washington contributed 13 points, 10 boards, three assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.

-- The Wynn in Las Vegas opened UK as a five-point favorite.

-- John Calipari?s squad has won outright in 14 of its 16 home games at Rupp, but it has limped to a 6-10 spread record.

-- Knox, who leads UK in scoring (15.4 points per game) and rebounding (5.6 RPG), was named in Yahoo?s explosive report on college basketball corruption that was penned by Pat Forde and Pete Thamel and released early Friday morning. Nevertheless, Calipari and UK released a statement Friday denying any wrongdoing and when Cal was asked at a Friday presser about whether Knox would play Saturday or not, he indicated that he would ?as far as I know.?

-- Missouri owns a 4-5 record both SU and ATS in nine true road assignments.

-- When these teams met at Mizzou Arena on Feb. 3, Kentucky was attempting to hand Missouri a seventh straight head-to-head loss since it joined the league. Unfortunately for UK, it rolled ?seven out? as the Tigers led by 10 at intermission, by as many as 14 in the second half and cruised to a 69-60 win as 2.5-point home favorites. The 129 combined points ducked ?under? the 141-point total. Kassius Robertson and Jordan Barnett scored 16 points apiece for the winners, who forced the ?Cats to shoot 31.3 percent from the field and 2-of-20 (10.0%) from 3-point range. Jontay Porter added 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for Missouri. Gilgeous-Alexander was the only UK player in double figures with 15 points, six assists and two steals. The Tigers held Knox to five points.

-- The ?under? is on a 5-2 run to improve to 16-11 overall for Missouri. The Tigers have watched the ?under? go 7-2 in their nine road contests.

-- The ?over? is 15-12 overall for UK, 9-6 in its home games.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Auburn at Florida**

-- The Wynn in Las Vegas opened Florida (17-11 SU, 12-14 ATS) as a 2.5-point home favorite. UF is 10-5 SU and 5-8 ATS at home.

-- Mike White?s team has lost three consecutive games both SU and ATS, including Wednesday?s 62-57 setback at Tennessee as a four-point road underdog. Jalen Hudson scored a team-best 13 points for the Gators and pulled down five rebounds. Senior point guard Chris Chiozza had 11 points, nine assists, six rebounds and two steals. There?s no shame in that loss in Knoxville, but L?s can become contagious and there was no excuse for blowing comfortable second-half leads in the prior defeats vs. Georgia and at Vandy. The Gators have also lost late second-half leads in L?s vs. Duke (in Portland) and vs. Clemson (in Sunrise, where the NHL?s Florida Panthers play). Those were leads given up in the final minute, but there are other L?s when UF led with less than 10 minutes remaining such as at Ole Miss, vs. South Carolina and at Georgia.

-- Florida is No. 29 at KenPom.com and Lunardi has it as a No. 7 seed in his latest bracket projections. However, Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com has the Gators as a part of his Last Four In and they are ranked No. 62 in the RPI. UF has a 3-3 record against the RPI Top 25, a 6-6 mark versus the Top 50 and an 11-10 record against the Top 100. Five of the Gators? six Top 50 wins have come away from home. They have road victories at Texas A&M (by 17 points!), at Kentucky and at Missouri, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Gonzaga (in Portland) and Cincinnati (in Newark). All five of UF?s wins over teams ranked between 50-100 in the RPI have come by at least nine points. The other four include a 71-54 home win over Mississippi St., a 65-41 victory at South Carolina, an 81-60 pimpslap of Baylor in Gainesville, a 71-54 home triumph over Mississippi St. and a 108-87 win over Stanford at the PK80 Invitational in Portland.

-- Auburn (24-4 SU, 19-7 ATS) has won outright in seven of its nine road assignments, posting a 6-3 spread record. The losses came at Alabama and at South Carolina.

-- Auburn star guard Mustapha Heron is listed as ?questionable? at UF. Heron, the team?s second-leading scorer with a 16.1 PPG average, missed Wednesday?s blowout win over Alabama due to the flu. The sophomore also averages 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

-- Even without Heron and Anfernee McLemore, the SEC?s leading shot blocker who was lost to a season-ending injury (dislocated ankle) last weekend, Auburn destroyed arch-rival Alabama with only seven scholarship players dressed out. Bruce Pearl?s squad won 90-71 Wednesday as a seven-point home ?chalk? to avenge a loss at Coleman Coliseum earlier this year. Jared Harper was the catalyst with 21 points, six assists, four steals and two rebounds, while Bryce Brown finished with 18 points. Chuma Okeke contributed 16 points, 10 boards and two blocked shots.

-- Auburn is No. 6 in the RPI and No. 12 in the latest Associated Press Top 25. AU is 3-1 versus the RPI Top 25, 6-3 against the Top 50 and 14-4 vs. the Top 100. The Tigers have won by double-digit margins in five of its six wins over Top-50 opponents and in 10 of their 14 victories over Top-100 foes. They own home wins over Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Middle Tennessee. AU has won on the road at Tennessee, at Missouri, at Murray St., at Mississippi St., at Georgia and at Ole Miss.

-- With one more win in its three remaining games, Auburn will earn at least a share of its first SEC regular-season championship since 1999.

-- Auburn hasn?t tasted a victory over Florida in nine years, losing 10 in a row. The ?over? has hit in four consecutive games in this rivalry. The Gators have covered in three straight against Auburn, including last year?s 114-95 win as 10-point road favorites on Valentine?s Day. John Egbunu sustained a torn ACL in this game and hasn?t played since then. KeVaughn Allen, who was held scoreless for the first time since 2016 in Wednesday?s loss at UT, had 17 points for UF despite playing only 21 minutes and taking just four shots from the field. Allen made both of his 3-pointers and hit 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Seven Gators scored in double figures, including Chiozza (11) and Egbunu (10). AU?s Harper had 10 points and two assists in defeat, while Heron finished with nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

-- The ?over? is 14-12 overall for Auburn, but the ?under? is 5-4 in its road outings. The ?over? has hit in back-to-back games for the Tigers and six of their past nine.

-- The ?under? is on a 6-1 run for the Gators to improve to 14-12 overall. They?ve seen the ?over? go 7-6 in their 13 lined home games.

-- The SEC Network will provide television coverage at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Wichita State star guard Landry Shamet is ?questionable? (illness) for Saturday?s game at SMU. Shamet, who missed the Shockers? mid-week game, is averaging 14.7 points, 5.2 assists and 3.1 RPG. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. As of early Friday night, most spots had the Shockers listed as 7.5-point road favorites. One offshore had the total at 143 points. Remember, SMU?s Shake Milton and Jarrey Foster remain ?out.?

-- After slipping on the wet floor and injuring his knee during Wednesday?s game at Providence, Seton Hall forward Desi Rodriguez has been ruled out of Saturday?s game at St. John?s. Nevertheless, the Pirates aren?t expected to be without Rodriguez for an extended period. Rodriguez is averaging 18.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

-- Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard?s team eventually beat Providence when the game resumed at noon Eastern on Thursday afternoon. All plays, including mine on Providence -1, were ruled no-plays when the game was postponed with the Pirates leading by nine and more than 13 minutes remaining. The house rules in Las Vegas books call for a basketball game to have played at least 35 total minutes to become official for betting purposes. Therefore, all wagers (for the game; not first-half bets) on the side and total were cancelled. Willard has more concerns than just Rodriguez?s knee and how to defend the Johnnies? Shamorie Ponds. In Yahoo?s aforementioned report, Seton Hall?s name was heavily mentioned along with payments from Andy Miller?s agency to former player Isaiah Whitehead, who was a 5-star get for Willard several years ago.

-- Marquette star guard Markus Howard is ?doubtful? at DePaul with a hip injury. Howard is averaging 21.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for the Golden Eagles, who face the Blue Demons at noon Eastern in a non-televised Big East showdown. Marquette was a short three-point road favorite as of early Friday night.

-- San Diego State forward Malik Pope is ?out? Saturday against San Jose State due to a suspension. Pope is averaging 12.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game.

Saturday's Best Bets
February 23, 2018

Saturday College Basketball Best Bets

The college basketball world was rocked Friday as names of schools and players were released in this current FBI probe into the NCAA and it wasn't pretty. Big time schools from all across the country were caught in the wake of the released news, and don't be surprised to see players who are still active with their respective schools be ?sat down? for ?precautionary? reasons as this investigation really starts to take shape.

It's an ugly situation for many big time schools, and it will be interesting to see the ramifications this information will have on conference tournaments and the NCAA Tournament.

But not all programs are ?cheats,? and there is plenty of basketball to be played on Saturday overall. For some conferences this is the final weekend of play before conference tournaments begin, and for others, they've still got a week to go to make one final push towards better seeding. So keep an eye on who is in and who is out Saturday, but for now, let's get right to some best bets from the opening line board.

Michigan at Maryland (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The Wolverines were a big name school that was not named in Friday's release and that has to be comforting to Wolverine fans. Saturday finds them wrapping up their regular season with a road game in Maryland, a team they squeaked out a one-point home win against in the middle of January. Michigan was laying -8 that day and they nearly got caught in a huge letdown spot as they were coming off a huge win @ Michigan State two days prior. Michigan was down 10 at the break and stormed back in the 2nd half to get the win.

This time around there is no possible letdown spot trapping the Wolverines, and with the chance to end the season on a five-game winning streak, I believe they get the job done. They are the more talented team overall, and given the struggles they had with Maryland in the first meeting, this line at pick'em actually has quite a bit of value attached to it. Maryland was also one of the schools named in the NCAA report, so you've got to wonder how focused they'll actually be given they are basically ?locked? in their spot in the Big 10 standings.

Michigan is 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games overall, 10-4-1 ATS run going against a winning foe, and with a chance to lock up that 4th spot in the conference and the critical ?double bye? in the conference tournament, look for Michigan to start off your Saturday with a win.

Best Bet #1: Michigan (Pick 'em)

Missouri at Kentucky (ESPN, 8:15 p.m. ET)

This play has me backing another road team in conference play, this time in the SEC. The SEC still has another full week to go in their regular season, and right now Kentucky and Missouri are sitting 5th and 6th respectively with a 8-7 SU record in conference play. Kentucky holds the edge by virtue of having one more win overall this year, but don't be surprised if that's evened up after this game as Missouri goes for the season sweep.

Mizzou took care of home court advantage back at the beginning of February with a 69-60 win over Kentucky, holding the Wildcats to an abysmal 31.3% shooting overall (10% from 3-point) in the victory. Mizzou went on to win three straight games after that W, before hitting a minor slide of late having lost their last two SU. Yet, digging deeper into those two losses you'll see that they came by a single point and a 3-point OT loss, so we really could be talking about the Tigers being on a seven-game winning streak entering this contest.

It's for that reason that I believe this is simply too many points to give a Missouri team that's playing quality basketball right now, especially when (to nobody's real surprise) that Kentucky was another program named in Friday's report. Given the Wildcats reputation for being the best ?one-and-done? school in the country, you had to figure Kentucky's name would come up in the report and it will be interesting to see if any current Wildcats will be ?sat out? because of it. Whether that happens or not, I don't think it matters as Kentucky is a distracted team at the moment that's been a money-burner at home (6-10 ATS) because of their reputation bringing slightly inflated spreads along with it.

This Kentucky team was completely baffled by Missouri's defense in the first meeting, and I doubt that drastically changes here. Missouri is a team that has success bringing their defense on the road ? they've held three straight foes to fewer than 70 points in their last three road games ? and the blueprint we've seen all year to beating the Wildcats is to keep them in the low-70's at worst. Don't be surprised to see Missouri win this game outright, especially if they hold Kentucky to a sub-70 scoring day, but I'm grabbing the points to be safe.

Best Bet #2: Missouri (+5.5)
