Big East Tournament Preview

By Jonathan Willis

Move over Big Ten, the marquee attraction is coming to the Big Apple. For the last 35 years, the Big East has called New York home. We have seen plenty of historic games here over the years as some of the most storied programs in the country have played in front of a packed house at MSG. Some of the names have changed, but the level of basketball on display is still incredible.

Villanova enters the Big East Tournament as the favorite, having made it to the championship game in each of the last three seasons. However, this is a tournament where we have seen plenty of upsets over the years.

Tune into FOX and FS1 for live television coverage of the Big East Tournament from Wednesday, March 7 ? Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

Big East Tournament Betting Odds

Villanova -110
Xavier +230
Butler +700
Creighton +800
Seton Hall +800
Providence +1600
Marquette +2500
Georgetown +5000
St. John?s +5000
DePaul +10000

The Favorites

Xavier might be the No. 1 seed heading into the Big East Tournament, but it is the second-favorite to take down the title. The Musketeers were hammered in both of their meetings against the Wildcats this season, giving oddsmakers cause for pause when considering their chances. Its defense has just been unable to stop Villanova, who lit up Xavier for 89 and 95 points.

Speaking of the Wildcats, Nova was ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the season. However, the team dropped three of its last eight games to take a slight dip and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament. There?s no denying that this is one of the most talented teams in the nation, with Naismith Award contender Jalen Brunson leading the way.

The Contenders

Five teams finished in the middle of the pack in the Big East, all coming within a game of each other.

Seton Hall is the No. 3 seed as the result of a better head-to-head record than Creighton and Providence. The Pirates started strong this season, but a four-game losing streak left them out of contention for the conference title. Still, this team will be a tough out with Angel Delgado patrolling the paint.

Creighton?s Marcus Foster is one of the top guards in the conference and makes this team one to keep an eye on. Foster led the Bluejays to an upset of Villanova just a few weeks ago, and he averages over 20 PPG on one of the nation?s top offenses.

Even though Butler went just 9-9 in conference play, people have jumped on the Bulldogs in this tournament. Butler is the shortest favorite of all the teams in this tier. Kelan Martin is a big reason for that, and he was recently named one of the three unanimous First Team All-Big East selections.

Next up

Despite being the only team to beat both Villanova and Xavier this year, not many are high on Providence?s chances entering the tournament. The Friars aren?t a great shooting team and the advanced metrics say that this team has gotten incredibly lucky this season.

Marquette has the misfortune of having to play in the first round despite finishing 9-9. That extra game could be a godsend though as it gives the Golden Eagles another shot to get a win they desperately need to improve their tournament resume.

The Longshots

For Georgetown, St. John?s, and Depaul, this is the season. All three teams will need to win the tournament to get an NCAA Tournament bid, although the Hoyas are still likely to get to a postseason tournament thanks to an incredibly soft non-conference schedule.

The most interesting team in this group is St. John?s. The Red Storm lost their first 11 conference games before inexplicably knocking off Duke and Villanova in back-to-back weeks in early February. They received a jolt of confidence after those two victories and won five of their last eight games.

Free College Basketball ATS Picks

Villanova is my pick to win the tournament, but there is value in Providence too. Although the advanced numbers don?t like the Friars, they have a favorable draw and have already knocked off the Wildcats and the Musketeers before.

Big 12 Tournament Preview

By Jonathan Willis

Although Kansas has dominated the Big 12 during the regular season, winning 14 straight titles, the Jayhawks have not always had a lot of success when it comes to the conference tournament. Instead, it?s been Iowa State that has risen to the occasion lately.

The Cyclones have won three of the last four Big 12 conference tournaments, but no one is giving them much of a chance this time. They are the one team that is considered out of contention for an NCAA Tournament bid with a 4-14 record in conference and have the longest odds on the board.

With Iowa State seemingly out of the picture, can Kansas erase some of its recent woes at this tournament? Or will another team emerge and help itself in a big way on Selection Sunday?

Tune into ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU for live television coverage of the Big 12 Tournament from Wednesday, March 7 ? Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Big 12 Tournament Betting Odds

Kansas +193
West Virginia +355
Texas Tech +380
TCU +625
Kansas State +1000
Baylor +1200
Oklahoma +1500
Texas +1500
Oklahoma State +2350
Iowa State +10000

The Favorites

It was rocky for a while, but Kansas eventually did enough to win another Big 12 regular season title. However, this was the least convincing run we have seen out of the Jayhawks in quite some time. While the offense is great, defensive woes have kept this team from really taking off. Bill Self is hoping that doesn?t happen again.

Many were expecting this to be West Virginia?s year. The Mountaineers had a superstar in Jevon Carter and won 15 straight after dropping their season opener. Road woes undermined this team though, as they dropped games to bottom feeders Iowa State and Texas away from Morgantown.

Texas Tech has been one of the biggest surprises of the season. The Red Raiders have the third-best defense in the country according to Ken Pomeroy, and they looked like they could seriously usurp Kansas. Unfortunately, Texas Tech lost four of its last five to close out the season, but it did finish with the Big 12?s No. 2 seed.

The Contenders

Snatching away Jamie Dixon from Pittsburgh continues to pay huge dividends for TCU. The Horned Frogs won the NIT in their first season under Dixon last year, and they will be dancing this year. They have the most efficient offense in the conference according to Pomeroy.

Kansas State is a solid all-around team led by Dean Wade. Wade is one of the more dangerous players in the conference in that his size and range makes him tough to guard. He is 6?10 and hitting 42.7 percent of his three-pointers on the season. Wade can take over a game and few teams have actually shut him down.

It didn?t look like Baylor would have a chance to make the NCAA Tournament after a 2-7 start in conference play, but the Bears are 6-3 against Big 12 foes since then. They have talented big men like Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and Terry Matson and can control the paint.

Trae Young may not end up winning the Naismith Award, but he has been pivotal in Oklahoma?s turnaround. However, he has seriously cooled off after a very hot start. Young has shot better than 35 percent just once in his last five games. If he isn?t shooting well, Oklahoma is likely to go down.

Texas? hopes in the Big 12 Tournament depend on the conference?s other extremely talented freshman, Mohamed Bamba. Bamba has lived up to the hype and has gotten the chance to shine defensively under Shaka Smart. However, his status is in question after a toe injury kept him out of the last two games.

The Longshots

Although Oklahoma State picked up some nice wins in conference, many still consider the Cowboys a longshot to make it to the NCAA Tournament. They will need to knock off in-state rival Oklahoma in the first round and upset Kansas in the quarterfinals to punch their ticket.

It?s been a good run for Iowa State, but it?s hard to see the Cyclones winning four in four days. They failed to win a conference road game this season and don?t have the stars that led them on their recent run.

Free College Basketball ATS Picks

Those are juicy odds on the Jayhawks to win it all, but my money is on either Texas Tech or TCU. Both teams are well-coached and have not had the lapses that Kansas and West Virginia have had this year.

Iowa State +10000

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) One of the most underestimated facts in sports; over the last five years, Tom Brady has earned $74,784,964, ?only? $14,956,993 a year. That allows New England more flexibility in paying other players. Not many quarterbacks or any athlete would willingly take less money to help the ballclub win? you think a member of the Manning family would do that?

Since 2013, Eli Manning has earned $97,660,004, 3rd-most in NFL.

Lot of people think Brady is the best quarterback ever; for him to be in the middle of the pack salary-wise is ludicrous and absurd.

12) Since 2013, Baltimore Ravens have spent $119,584,094 on the QB position, most in the NFL; Tennessee Titans have spent $38,280,713, the least.

11) Matthew Stafford has earned $111,008,969 over the last five years; he has an 0-3 career record in playoff games, which is part of why the Lions changed coaches this winter.

10) St Mary?s lost in the WCC tourney and their non-conference strength of schedule is #290; I don?t know if they?re getting in NCAA?s or not, but I do know this will be the longest week of their lives, as they wait for 6:00 Sunday night, to see if their season is a success or a failure.

9) Maine fired its basketball Monday and hired the former women?s coach, who sat out last year on medical leave. Then Maine?s best player announced he would transfer; Aaron Calixte scored 17 points a game this season. New coach?s job just got a little tougher.

8) Random baseball fact: last year, Joey Votto had a streak of 20 games in a row where he reached base 2+ times. That is the longest such streak since 1981. Barry Bonds had a 19-game streak in 2004.

7) Ed Hochuli retired as an NFL referee; he gave the best explanations for penalties. Long time ago, Hochuli was a linebacker at Texas-El Paso. Hochuli?s son Shawn is one of two new NFL refs, replacing his dad and Jeff Triplette, who also retired.

6) Charleston 83, Northeastern 76 OT? CAA final was one of best games of Champ Week so far. Huskies led by as many as 17 points in second half. This tournament is usually played in Richmond, but has been in Charleston last couple years- that sure helped the Cougars in this game. Charleston is in NCAA?s for first time since 1999.

Northeastern +2.5 is a very tough beat.

5) Wow. University of Memphis is seriously considering firing Tubby Smith and replacing him with Memphis legend Anfernee Hardaway, who is currently a high school coach in Memphis.

Rumors are that Hardaway would bring Larry Brown in as an assistant coach. Brown will be 78 in September; he is the only coach ever to win an NBA title and an NCAA national title.

4) Arizona Diamondbacks are bringing the bullpen cart back for this year; not sure if it?ll help pace of play at all, but bullpen carts are very cool. Now that just about all the bullpens are off the field and behind the OF fence, you might see more teams do this.

3) Gonzaga 74, BYU 54? Orleans Arena in Las Vegas has a great coffee shop; am guessing it is filled with happy Gonzaga fans after this rout of a BYU team that emptied its bucket when they upset St Mary?s Monday nite.

There is talk of Gonzaga moving to a better basketball league; that would be a really interesting decision. Gonzaga is kind of like UNLV was in the late 80?s when they ruled the Big West, but once they moved to the Mountain West, things haven?t been as good for the Rebels. Sometimes it is better to be the big fish in a smaller pond.

2) South Dakota 97, South Dakota 87? Jackrabbits are headed to NCAA?s for 3rd year in row and fifth time overall. They have a 6-8 kid named Daum who is an NBA player- he can shoot the 3-ball (42.8%) but when he got in foul trouble in this game, they still stretched out their lead- their freshman Jenkins is also a really good player.

1? In 1985, Mike Schmidt was the highest paid baseball player, at $3,125,000 a year.

This year, even a cheapskate team like my Oakland A?s have six guys who make that much. Trust me, none of those six guys could touch Mike Schmidt?s shoelaces. If Schmidt was playing today, you?d have to add on a zero to the end of that $3,125,000 to pay his tab.

College basketball conference tournament week: Favorites and best bets
Ashton Grewal

College basketball conference tournament week is here which means the biggest programs and future NBA lottery picks take the court in the hopes of cutting down the nets. The sheer volume of games can be a lot to handle for oddsmakers and sports bettors alike.

ACC (March 6-10, Brooklyn)

Favorite: Virginia Cavaliers +140 (28-2 overall, 17-1 conference)
? The Cavaliers ran wild in conference play and became the first ACC team to finish with only one league loss since the 2002 Maryland Terrapins. This is the best version of Virginia since Tony Bennett became the head coach in 2009 ? but it still butters its bread on the defensive side of the ball.
The Cavaliers allowed the fewest points per game in the country (52.8) and held high-scoring sides like Duke and UNC to 63 and 49 points respectively. Be on the lookout for news regarding leading scorer Kyle Guy. The Cavs guard hurt his ankle in the regular season finale against Notre Dame.

Live dog: NC State Wolfpack +2500 (21-10 overall, 11-7 conference)
? The Wolfpack own some resume-padding wins and some head-scratching losses too. NC State topped Arizona in non-conference play, downed Duke and beat UNC at Chapel Hill. First year coach Kevin Keatts had his crew humming to end the regular season; The Wolfpack went 7-3 straight up in their last 10 games and 5-1 against the spread in their last six.

Atlantic 10 (March 7-11, Washington D.C.)

Favorite: Rhode Island Rams +150 (23-6 overall, 15-3 conference)
? The Rams entered the season as the favorites to win the Atlantic 10 after they returned most of the same group that won the conference tournament in 2017, and nearly knocked off eventual Final Four team Oregon in the Round of 32. Rhode Island has lost twice in the last week of the regular season and had just one convincing win over its final five contests.

Live dog: Davidson Wildcats +250 (18-11 overall, 13-5 conference)
? The odds could be better but Davidson are playing as well as any team in the conference entering the tournament and it took down Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure during the regular season. The Wildcats are led by potential A-10 Player of the Year Peyton Aldridge, who leads the conference in scoring at 21.3 points per game.

Big East (March 7-10, New York)

Favorite: Villanova Wildcats -175 (27-4 overall, 14-4 conference)
? The Wildcats are one of the few teams to be the favorite to win their conference tournament despite failing to win the regular season crown. Villanova is granted this exception by the oddsmakers because of how thoroughly it smashed top seed Xavier in the two meetings this season. Jay Wright?s side finished with the nation?s fourth-best scoring margin (+16 ppg) despite playing the sixth-toughest schedule in the nation.

Live dog: Seton Hall Pirates +1200 (21-10 overall, 10-8 conference)
? The Pirates won four of their last five regular season games, with the one loss an overtime contest against Villanova. Seton Hall sat down Texas Tech and lost by one to Rhode Island in its non-conference schedule. Desi Rodriguez, the squad?s leading scorer, has been out since Feb. 21 when he rolled his ankle against Providence. His return could be a big boost for the Pirates.

Big 12 (March 7-10, Kansas City)

Favorite: Kansas Jayhawks +180 (24-7 overall, 13-5 conference)
? The Jayhawks won their 14th consecutive Big 12 regular season title under head coach Bill Self but it was no cakewalk this time around. Kansas lost its top recruit and used a seven-player rotation during the regular season. Like all Self teams, this year?s KU team relies heavily on its starting point guard ? Devonte? Graham. Kansas would be in big trouble if Graham got hurt or in early foul trouble during the league tournament.

Live dog: Oklahoma Sooners +1800 (18-12 overall, 8-10 conference)
? It seems like a long, long time ago but the Sooners started the season by winning 12 of their first 13 games and knocked off Oregon, USC and Wichita State along the way. They still have Trae Young, who ? at times ? has shown off Steph Curry-type range with jumper off the dribble.

Mountain West (March 7-10, Las Vegas)

Favorite: Nevada Wolf Pack +120 (26-6 overall, 15-3 conference)
? Nevada is among the highest-scoring teams in the nation and possesses two dead-eye shooters from deep in Caleb Martin and Kendall Stephens. The Wolf Pack won the MWC a year ago and entered the season as the faves to take the conference crown again, but had to deal with a slew injuries during the campaign.

Live dog: San Diego State Aztecs +500 (21-10 overall, 11-7 conference)
? The Aztecs are in great shape heading into the MWC tournament as long as Trey Kell is healthy. San Diego State went 3-4 SU without their senior point guard in the lineup. Kell was a big part of the Aztecs? six-game win streak to close the regular season.

Pac-12 (March 7-10, Las Vegas)

Favorite: Arizona Wildcats +200 (24-7 overall, 14-4 conference)
? There?s no questioning the Wildcats are the class of the conference but there?s enough stuff going on in the background that will warrant an oral history penned by Jonathan Abrams. Head coach Sean Miller?s name is all over the FBI?s NCAA basketball investigation ? including an alleged 100K payment for freshman and Pac-12 Player of the Year Deandre Ayton. Miller and Ayton are ploughing ahead as is second-leading scorer Allonzo Trier, who recently returned to the Wildcat lineup after a two-game suspension due to a positive PED test.

Live dog: Southern California Trojans +400 (21-10 overall, 12-6 conference)
? This is a little bit of a cheat code because the Trojans are the second fave to win the tournament. They didn?t do much in their non-conference schedule but they showed last season they can string some solid performances together over a short amount of time. Chimezie Metu and Bennie Boatwright are talented big men who can dominate a game against the right opponent.

SEC (March 7-11, St. Louis)

Favorite: Auburn Tigers +300 (25-6 overall, 13-5 conference)
? The Tigers are tied with Tennessee and Florida for the shortest odds to win the SEC tournament and The Athletic listed the Volunteers as the pick to cut down the nets. Auburn would be the clear fave to win the conference tournament if it didn?t look like big man Anfernee McLemore was done for the season. The Tigers are one of the top offensive teams in the nation but their defense loses a lot without McLemore manning the paint and protecting the rim.

Live dog: Alabama Crimson Tide +3000 (17-14 overall, 8-10 conference)
? Winning a string of games over a short amount of time sometimes requires just two things: excellent team defense and one outstanding offensive guard. Alabama has both of these qualities. The Crimson Tide rank 28th in the country in opponent field goal percentage (41.4) and freshman point guard Colin Sexton is an expert at making tough hoops.

Pac-12 Conference Tournament First Round betting preview and odds

The first round of the Pac-12 Tournament gets underway at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Without an opening round bye, the eight teams involved in Wednesday's action in Sin City have a long, hard road ahead if they hope to be involved in the big dance next week.

Tournament to be played at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arizona State Sun Devils vs Colorado Buffaloes (+7, 147)

For all of its impressive numbers and notable accomplishments this season, including a top-five national ranking for most of December and the program?s first 20-win season in four years, Arizona State isn?t a lock to play in its first NCAA Tournament since 2014. The Sun Devils finished a disappointing ninth in the Pac-12 and will tip off the conference tourney on Wednesday afternoon against eighth-seeded Colorado at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After a 12-0 non-conference start, which included a 102-86 neutral-site victory over No. 2 Xavier and a 95-85 road win over No. 9 Kansas, Arizona State lost three of its first four Pac-12 games and never fully recovered. Behind high-scoring senior guard Tra Holder (18.6 points per game) and Shannon Evans II (16.7), the Sun Devils did win six of its nine conference contests after the 1-3 start, but then dropped four of their last five games to end the regular season and finished .500 or worse in Pac-12 play for the fourth straight season.

Colorado staggered to the finish in the regular season, dropping four of its last five games to enter postseason play only two games above .500. The Buffaloes have notched some big wins, most notably an 80-77 home win over Arizona on Jan. 6 and a season sweep of UCLA, but they?ve certainly also had their share of struggles, enduring three separate three-game losing streaks since an 8-3 start. Point guard McKinley Wright (team-leading 14.2 points and 5.3 assists) has been a steadying force all season and was an easy choice for the five-man Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Arizona State opened as 7-point favorites and the total hit betting boards at 147. As of Tuesday evening neither number has moved up or down.

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Sun Devils are 2-10-2 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Buffaloes are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
* Over is 4-1 in Sun Devils' last 5 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Under is 7-2 in Buffaloes' last 9 vs. Pacific-12.
* Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

California Golden Bears vs Stanford Cardinal (-9.5, 144)

Most experts don?t have Stanford arriving as an NCAA Tournament team until next year, but the Cardinal would prefer to expedite that timeline. The fifth-seeded Cardinal figure to be a dangerous opponent at this week?s Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas, where they?ll face No. 12 California in a first-round matchup on Wednesday.

Stanford closed the regular season by winning four of its last five games, including a 77-73 victory over Cal in Berkeley on Feb. 18. Coach Jerod Haase has four freshmen in his rotation, but the offense revolves around junior forward Reid Travis, who was named to the All-Pac-12 first team for the second consecutive season after finishing third in the Pac-12 in scoring (19.6 points per game) and fourth in rebounding (8.2).

Cal owns the league?s worst offense and defense but stunned Stanford on Dec. 30 with a 77-74 victory in the Pac-12 opener at Maples Pavilion. The Bears set the school?s single-season record for losses and finished alone in last place in the conference for the first time since 1979-80, but freshmen Juhwan Harris-Dyson, Darius McNeill and Justice Sueing offer coach Wyking Jones reason for optimism. Sueing averaged a team-high 15.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in league play, while McNeill has made 62 three-pointers, one shy of a Cal freshman record. Senior forward Marcus Lee averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the two previous meetings against Stanford and will need another big game Wednesday to help keep Cal?s upset hopes alive.

BETTING STATS:

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Stanford opened as 9.5-point favorites and the total hit betting boards at 144. Neither the pointspread or the total have moved as of Tuesday evening.

MATCHUP CHART:

197295.jpg

TRENDS:

* Golden Bears are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 neutral site games.
* Cardinal are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
* Under is 12-3 in Golden Bears' last 15 vs. Pacific-12.
* Over is 4-1 in Cardinal's last 5 vs. Pacific-12.
* Golden Bears are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

Oregon St. Beavers vs Washington Huskies (+2.5, 141)

Two teams that closed the regular season on very different notes meet Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas as seventh-seeded Washington faces 10th-seeded Oregon State. The Huskies fell onto the NCAA Tournament bubble with five losses in their last eight games, while Oregon State gained some much-needed momentum by winning two of its final three games. The teams split two regular-season matchups, with Oregon State winning 97-94 in Corvallis on Feb. 10 before the Huskies answered with last Thursday?s 79-77 victory in Seattle.

Huskies forward Noah Dickerson, who scored a team-high 25 points in last week?s win, received All-Pac-12 first team honors after averaging 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting 56.6 percent from the field. Washington was at 17-6 following a sweep of the Arizona schools last month but struggled down the stretch. The Huskies? resume includes a road win at Kansas, a home win over Arizona and a road win at USC, but they likely need a deep run in Las Vegas in order to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011.

Oregon State sophomore forward Tres Tinkle, an All-Pac-12 first team selection, leads the Beavers in points (18.0 per game), rebounds (7.2) and assists (3.8). The Beavers had four scorers in double figures against Washington State last Saturday, including freshman guard Ethan Thompson, who finished with a career-high 23 points and six assists. The Beavers are shooting 54.5 percent from the field over the last three games and rank second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense at 70.8 points allowed per contest.

BETTING STATS:

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Oregon State opened as 2.5-point favorites and the total hit betting boards at 141.

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Beavers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win.
* Huskies are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games.
* Over is 7-3 in Beavers' last 10 vs. Pacific-12.
* Under is 24-6 in Huskies' last 30 vs. Pacific-12.
* Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

Washington St. Cougars vs Oregon Ducks (-12, 150)

Never mind a return trip to the Final Four. Making it to the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament would be a strong step this March for sixth-seeded Oregon, which faces 11th-seeded Washington State late Wednesday night in the opening round of the conference tourney at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Ducks wrapped up their eighth straight 20-win season with Saturday?s 72-64 win at Washington in the regular-season finale, but that?s about the only similarity to last season?s 33-6 squad which lost to eventual-champion North Carolina in the national semifinals. Only one starter ? sophomore point guard Payton Pritchard ? is back from last season?s upperclassman-dominated team, which won the Pac-12 regular-season title and wound up setting the program?s single-season record for wins. The Ducks? 10 Pac-12 wins matched the program?s fewest in a conference season over the last seven campaigns.

Washington State, meanwhile, did clip the visiting Ducks (78-76) last Thursday, but won just six of their final 24 games after a 6-0 start to finish above only 2-16 California in the conference. The unquestioned bright spot for the Cougars this season has been forward Robert Franks, who nearly tripled his scoring average (6.3 to 17.4 points per game) and doubled his rebound output (3.3 to 6.7) from a season ago to earn Pac-12 Most Improved Player honors.

BETTING STATS:

34t7ub9.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Oregon opened as big 12-point favorites and the total hit betting boards at 150.

MATCHUP CHART:

wquj3d.jpg

TRENDS:

* Cougars are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 games after allowing more than 90 points in their previous game.
* Ducks are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
* Over is 5-0 in Cougars' last 5 vs. Pacific-12.
* Over is 7-3 in Ducks' last 10 neutral site games.

Wednesday's Wagers
March 7, 2018

**Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech**

-- As of early this morning, most books had Notre Dame (19-13 straight up, 12-16 against the spread) listed as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 141.5.

-- Mike Brey?s team was nationally ranked when star senior power forward Bonzie Colson broke his foot, prompting him to miss all of January before returning to the lineup on Feb. 28. The Fighting Irish went 11-3 before his injury, 2-1 since his return. We should note that both wins were over lowly Pittsburgh, but the one loss was a 62-57 setback at Virginia when Notre Dame covered the number as an 8.5-point underdog.

-- In his first game back at home to celebrate his Senior Night, Colson scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots in a 73-56 non-covering triumph over the Panthers. He made 6-of-10 field-goal attempts in 21 minutes of playing time. Then at UVA, Colson exploded for 24 points and 15 rebounds while logging 37 minutes of PT.

-- In the opening round of the ACC Tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Monday, Notre Dame played poorly and barely slipped past Pitt by a 67-64 count. The Panthers easily covered the spread as 17-point underdogs, but they came up short of winning their first ACC game of the season. After trailing by 12 at intermission, Kevin Stallings? team cut the deficit to two in the final minute. Colson played 33 minutes and produced 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots. Matt Farrell, the gritty senior point guard from New Jersey who also missed several games with an ankle injury while Colson was out, finished with 18 points and three assists. Rex Pflueger and Temple Gibbs were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

-- Notre Dame is No. 65 in the RPI Rankings with its 1-7 record against the RPI Top 25, a 3-9 mark versus the Top 50 and a 7-10 ledger against the Top 100. Brey?s club has home victories over FSU, N.C. State and Boston College, in addition to neutral-court scalps of LSU and Wichita State (in November when Colson was healthy). The Fighting Irish has road wins at the ?Cuse and at BC.

-- According to the latest ?Bracketology? report from ESPN.com?s Joe Lunardi on Tuesday morning, Virginia Tech was in an 8/9 game against Oklahoma in Detroit. Meanwhile, Notre Dame was the last team in his First Four Out.

-- Colson is averaging 20.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 2.4 blocked shots per game. He?s shooting 51.4 percent from the field and 80.4 percent from the free-throw line. Farrell, who missed five regular-season games with an ankle injury, is averaging 16.8 points PPG while knocking down 40.6 percent of his 3-balls. He has a 142/63 assist-to-turnover ratio and 30 steals. Gibbs (15.5 PPG) has hit 40.2 percent of his launches from downtown, while Martinas Geben is averaging 10.9 points and 8.2 RPG.

-- Virginia Tech (21-10 SU, 17-10 ATS) is No. 47 in the RPI, going 4-5 vs. the RPI Top 25, 4-9 against the Top 50 and 8-9 versus the Top 100. The Hokies have home wins over North Carolina, Duke, Clemson and N.C. State. They?ve also won at Virginia, at Notre Dame and at BC, in addition to a road victory vs. Washington by 24 points!).

-- Buzz Williams?s squad has won five of its past eight games while going 6-2 ATS. V-Tech rallied past Duke to win on a late putback bucket by a 64-63 count last week as a five-point home underdog. However, the Hokies lost 69-68 at Miami as 3.5-point road underdogs in Saturday?s regular-season finale. They allowed a seven-point halftime lead to get away. Robinson scored a game-high 18 points by converting 3-of-4 attempts from 3-point range. He also had six assists but committed six turnovers. Blackshear had 11 points and five boards.

-- Tech is led by Justin Robinson, who paces his team in scoring (13.8 PPG), assists (5.5 APG) and steals (1.1 SPG). The junior guard has a 171/78 assist-to-turnover ratio and is draining 40.3 percent of his treys. Justin Bibbs (13.1 PPG) is burying 49.0 percent of his FGAs and 39.2 percent of his 3-pointers, while Kerry Blackshear is averaging 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds. Blackshear is hitting 56.2 percent of his FGAs and has a team-best 29 blocked shots.

-- Virginia Tech has been an underdog 11 times, compiling a 6-5 spread record with five outright victories. However, we should note that the Hokies are 6-2 ATS with those five outright wins in their past eight such spots.

-- When these teams met at Joyce Center in South Bend on Jan. 27, Farrell and Colson were both in street clothes. V-Tech won an 80-75 decision as a 2.5-point road underdog. Bibbs was the catalyst with 20 points and five assists without a turnover. He buried 8-of-10 FGAs and all four his 3-pointers. Chris Clarke contributed 12 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, while Robinson finished with 12 points and seven assists without a turnover. Gibbs scored a game-high 27 points for Notre Dame and handed out five assists. Gibbs played all 40 minutes and drained 5-of-10 attempts from long distance. John Mooney added 15 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

-- The ?under? has cashed in three straight games for the Irish, but the ?over? is 14-13 overall for the season.

-- The ?under? is on a remarkable 8-0 run for the Hokies, but they?ve still seen the ?over? go 14-13 overall. -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had this Big 12 Tournament showdown listed as a pick ?em with a total of 162.

-- Oklahoma State (18-13 SU, 14-14 ATS) has one of the more fascinating resumes you?ll ever see. OSU is currently a part of Lunardi?s First Four Out, one slot ahead of Notre Dame but behind Louisville and Marquette, both of whom are in action today.

-- Mike Boynton?s first team at OSU since taking over for Brad Underwood, who pulled a one and done in Stillwater before bolting to take the Illinois job, has been up and down all year long. Oklahoma State finished league play in a four-way tie for sixth place with OU, Baylor and Texas. All four teams had 8-10 records in Big 12 action.

-- Oklahoma State is No. 87 in the RPI and No. 57 at KenPom.com. Like Lunardi, Bracketville also has the Pokies in his First Four Out. OSU is under consideration thanks to some monster wins like a season sweep of Kansas, a win at West Virginia, a victory over FSU in South Florida (Sunrise, where the NHL?s Florida Panthers play) and home wins over the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Tulsa. Nine of OSU?s 13 losses have come against RPI Top-50 foes, including one-point defeats at Arkansas and at Texas. The Cowboys? worst losses were the four they had against Baylor (RPI #59) and Kansas State (RPI #62), both of whom swept the season series.

-- Boynton?s club has won three of its last four games while going 4-0 ATS. OSU?s only loss in this span was the aforementioned 65-64 defeat at Texas. The Cowboys are off an 82-64 win over Kansas as three-point home underdogs. Kendall Smith, a grad transfer from Cal State Northridge, led the way with 25 points and four steals on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and four makes on six 3-point launches. Mitchell Solomon added 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

-- Solomon (8.3 PPG) paces OSU in rebounding (6.4 RPG), FG percentage (56.3%), and blocked shots (1.1 BPG). Jeffrey Carroll, the senior swingman who has outstanding athleticism, is averaging 15.1 points and 5.9 RPG. Smith (12.9 PPG) had buried 41.2 percent of his 3-balls.

-- Oklahoma (18-12 SU, 10-19 ATS) struggled mightily down the stretch, losing six in a row before ending that slide with two wins in its past three games. Nevertheless, the Sooners are mired in a 3-12 ATS slump.

-- Lon Kruger?s team closed the regular season with an 81-60 win over Iowa State as a 10.5-point home ?chalk.? Kameron McGusty drained 4-of-7 treys in a team-best 18-point effort. Trae Young had a dismal shooting performance (5-of-19 FGAs, 1-of-9 from distance) yet still managed 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and six assists compared to two turnovers. Christian James finished with 15 points and three assists without a turnover.

-- Before his own slump that coincided with his team?s struggles, Young was the heavy favorite to win National Player of the Year honors. However, the true freshman point guard out of Norman committed at least five turnovers in 16 of OU?s last 19 games. Young had 12 turnovers in an 87-69 loss at Kansas State. Nevertheless, he led the nation in both points (27.5 PPG) and assists (8.9 APG). Young (3.9 RPG, 1.7 SPG) has 110 treys to his credit but shot just 36.1 percent from downtown.

-- OU is ranked No. 38 in the RPI and No. 43 at KenPom. The Sooners, who are currently a nine-seed at Bracketville (matched up vs. eighth-seeded Rhode Island) and with Lunardi (vs. Va. Tech), have posted a 5-2 record against the RPI Top 25, a 6-7 mark versus the Top 50 and a 10-11 ledger against the Top 100.

-- The ?over? is 18-11 overall for the Sooners, but they?ve seen the ?under? hit in back-to-back contests.

-- The ?under? is 18-10 overall for the Cowboys.

-- ESPNU will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- After OU-OSU concludes, Texas will take on Iowa State. As of early this morning, most books had the Longhorns listed as a 5.5-point favorites with a total of 136.5. This game is also on ESPNU and should tip around 9:30 p.m. Eastern. Texas star center Mo Bamba, a future lottery selection, is listed as ?doubtful? due to a toe injury. Bamba averages a double-double (13.0 PPG, 10.6 RPG) and is second in the nation in blocked shots (3.8 BPG). Shaka Smart?s team is in a 3-6 ATS slump, while the Cyclones are 1-4 ATS in their past five outings. Iowa State has lost six consecutive games outright. The Longhorns swept the season series, winning 74-70 as 2.5-point road favorites in Ames before collecting a 73-57 triumph as seven-point home favorites on Jan. 22. The ?over? is on a 14-7-1 run for the Cyclones in their last 21 outings.

-- Georgetown forward Marcus Derrickson is ?questionable? for tonight?s Big East Tournament game vs. St. John?s. Derrickson, who missed a blowout loss at Villanova in this past Saturday?s regular-season finale to nurse a sore ankle, is averaging 15.7 points and 8.1 RPG for the Hoyas. As of early this morning, most books had the Red Storm installed as a 4.5-point ?chalk.? This is a 7:00 p.m. Eastern tip from MSG in NYC on Fox Sports 1.

-- Wisconsin saw its remarkable run of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances dating back to 1998 snapped last week when it lost a heartbreaker to Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Kansas owns the longest current streak of Tourney invites (about to be 29) followed by Duke (almost 23), Michigan State (almost 21) and Gonzaga (20 as of last night). Mark Few?s team earned the WCC?s automatic invited by smashing BYU 74-54 last night as a nine-point favorite at The Orleans in Las Vegas. Few has led the Bulldogs to 19 of those 20 NCAA Tournament appearances. The first came under Dan Monson, who led Gonzaga to the 1999 Elite Eight before losing a nail-biter to the eventual national champ, UConn. The ?Zags had advanced past Florida in the West Region semifinals in Phoenix thanks to a Casey Calvary go-ahead, tip-in bucket with just 4-5 seconds remaining. UF?s Eddie Shannon missed a last-gasp potential game-winning trey at the buzzer.

-- As of early this morning, Georgia was listed as a two-point favorite vs. Vanderbilt for tonight?s SEC Tournament opener in St. Louis at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network. The total was 135. Something must give with this tally since Vandy has seen the ?over? cash at a 13-6 clip in its past 19 games, while UGA has watched the ?under? go 13-6 in its last 19 outings. When these teams met in Nashville at Memorial Gymnasium during the regular season, the Commodores rolled to an easy 81-66 win.

-- Tennessee, the SEC co-regular-season champions along with Auburn, are the No. 2 seed based on Auburn?s win in Knoxville in January. However, the Volunteers are the +250 ?chalk? (risk $100 to win $250) to win the SEC Tourney at Sportsbook.ag. When was the last time UT won this event? That would be 1979, one year before future NBA All-Star, two-time All-American and three time first-team All-SEC selection Dale Ellis, one of the best downtown shooters to ever live out of Marietta, GA., arrived on campus.

-- How about Auburn? The Tigers haven?t won the SEC Tournament since 1985, one year after Charles Barkley left early for the NBA Draft.

SEC's balance could create wide-open tournament
March 7, 2018

Southeastern Conference coaches believe the depth of their league should give all 14 teams reason to believe they could win the postseason tournament that starts Wednesday in St. Louis.

''You just never know,'' Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. ''I wouldn't be surprised by anything that happens in the tournament because of how balanced the league is.''

The standings reflect that balance.

No. 13 Tennessee and No. 16 Auburn tied for first place with 13-5 conference records, matching the highest loss total for any SEC champion in league history. Every team in the SEC won at least five conference games, the first time that's happened since 1988.

''After going through this league, I think I could tell any team in this league, `We have a chance if we're willing to do what we need to do,' '' Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. ''I really believe that. There's not a team in this league that can't do it.''

The tournament opens Wednesday with 11th-seeded South Carolina (16-15, 7-11 SEC) facing 14th-seeded Mississippi (12-19, 5-13) and 12th-seeded Georgia (16-14, 7-11) meeting 13th-seeded Vanderbilt (12-19, 6-12).

Auburn's Bruce Pearl says this is the most competitive the SEC has been in his nine years coaching in the league. Auburn has the No. 1 seed in the tournament because it won 94-84 at Tennessee in their lone regular-season meeting.

The SEC enters its conference tournament with three teams in the Top 25: Tennessee, Auburn and No. 23 Florida , the third seed this week. Kentucky is seeded fourth and joins Auburn, Tennessee and Florida in getting byes into Friday's quarterfinals.

---

Here are some things to watch this week in the SEC Tournament:

HOW MANY BIDS?
The SEC never has sent more than six teams to the NCAA Tournament in a single year, but that figures to change this month. Most mock brackets have the SEC getting seven or eight teams into the field. Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas A&M seem like safe bets to make the field. Alabama has more work to do, and Mississippi State may have knocked itself out of at-large consideration by ending the regular season with lopsided losses to Tennessee and LSU .

BIG WEEK FOR BAMA: Perhaps no SEC team has as much at stake this week as Alabama, which ended the regular season with five straight losses. Alabama (17-14, 8-10) seemed in good shape to earn an NCAA bid until that late slide. Johnson acknowledged the tournament gives his team a chance to ''hit the reset button.'' ''This is a new season, a new opportunity,'' Johnson said. ''Anything can happen.'' Alabama is the ninth seed and plays its first tournament game Thursday against eighth-seeded Texas A&M (20-11, 9-9) in a rematch of a game the Aggies won 68-66 on Saturday.

FAREWELL FOR FOX? The SEC already has dealt with one coaching change this year, as Ole Miss' Andy Kennedy stepped down last month with Tony Madlock taking over on an interim basis. Georgia could be the next SEC school to make a coaching change if the Bulldogs don't make some noise this week.

Georgia's Mark Fox owns a 161-132 mark at Georgia, but the Bulldogs have earned just two NCAA bids in his nine seasons. Georgia tied for 11th in the league standings this year despite having the AP SEC player of the year in Yante Maten.

''Really all we're doing, in fairness to our players, we're just trying to get them to win the next game,'' Fox said this week. ''This is about their season. I think that anything more than that would be undue pressure for them and unfair pressure for them.''

POSSIBILITIES FOR PORTER: One of the biggest questions surrounding this tournament is whether it will mark the highly anticipated return of Missouri's Michael Porter Jr.

Porter Jr. arrived on campus last fall as one of the nation's most highly touted freshmen but played just two minutes this season before undergoing lower back surgery. Porter has been cleared to return by doctors, but hasn't returned to action yet.

Georgia's Maten also enters this tournament with health concerns. Fox said Maten took a hit to the jaw Saturday at Tennessee, but he's hopeful the 6-8 forward will be ready to go this week.

DROUGHTS FOR LEAGUE LEADERS: Auburn is the No. 1 seed but hasn't won the SEC Tournament since 1985. Tennessee, the No. 2 seed, hasn't won this event since 1979 .

Auburn has a quarterfinal matchup Friday with either Texas A&M or Alabama. Tennessee's quarterfinal opponent will be either seventh-seeded Mississippi State or 10th-seeded LSU.

BYU's loss lets Big Ten bubble teams breathe easy - for now
March 7, 2018

No. 6 Gonzaga might have some new fans in Big Ten country.

A 74-54 win over BYU in the West Coast Conference Tournament title game Tuesday night gave the Bulldogs an automatic bid to the NCAAs. Gonzaga would have made the NCAA Tournament regardless, so the Zags' victory opened one more precious at-large berth for other contenders.

Nebraska and Penn State can breathe easy, at least for one more night.

The Big Ten's bubble teams can only watch now while other schools get a chance to impress the selection committee. It's an excruciating wait until the bracket is announced this weekend because the Big Ten tourney ended Sunday after being moved up a week earlier than normal in order to play at Madison Square Garden in New York.

What can help the Cornhuskers and Nittany Lions is if the favorites win the automatic bids in the remaining conference tournaments in order to leave as many at-large berths open as possible.

Gonzaga did them a favor by blowing out BYU . The Cougars (24-10, 67 RPI) likely lost their only shot to get into the NCAAs.

Elsewhere on the bubble, Notre Dame and Syracuse each won on the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament to keep their hopes alive. The schedule picks up Wednesday with the Big East, Big 12 and Pac-12 joining the conference tourney fray. Schools like Marquette, Oklahoma and Arizona State get their first cracks at strengthening resumes and making postseason runs to stay fresh in the minds of the members of the selection committee.

All Nebraska and Penn State can do is wait.

ON THE RISE

Notre Dame. The Irish (19-13, 69 RPI) had some nervous moments late in their three-point victory over 24-loss team Pittsburgh in the first round of the ACC Tournament. But Notre Dame did get 19 points and 33 minutes from star forward Bonzie Colson in his third game back from injury. Next up: a chance to get to 20 wins on Wednesday against Virginia Tech (21-10, 51 RPI). Unlike the 80-75 loss to the Hokies in late January, the Irish should have Colson and Matt Farrell for this rematch. Farrell missed the first game with a bad ankle.

Syracuse. Finally, an ACC tourney win for the Orange (20-12, 39 RPI). The 73-64 victory over Wake Forest sets up an important matchup for Syracuse on Wednesday against No. 12 North Carolina (22-9, 6 RPI). The Orange could use a win over a Top 10 RPI team to strengthen its chance to get back into the NCAAs after a one-year absence.

Saint Mary's. The 20th-ranked Gaels (28-5, 43 RPI) might have been on safe ground no matter how BYU fared against Gonzaga on Tuesday night. At the very least, the Cougars' loss means that the selection committee won't have to weigh whether to take more than two WCC squads.

FADING HOPES

Nebraska. The Cornhuskers (22-10) won eight of their last nine in the regular season to finish fourth in the Big Ten. But the last impression that the Cornhuskers left on the selection committee was a loss to Michigan in their first game of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday. At No. 64 in the RPI, Nebraska's lone win against Quadrant 1 teams (1-6) came against the Wolverines in January.

Penn State. See above. It's hard to tell how the weeklong layoff between the conference tournament and Selection Sunday will have on Big Ten bubble teams. The Nittany Lions (21-13, 77 RPI) are 3-8 against Quadrant 1 teams, with all three victories against No. 17 Ohio State.

BYU. The Cougars were 2-3 against Quadrant 1 teams coming into Tuesday, and they couldn't build on their biggest win of the season after defeating Saint Mary's in the WCC semis.

Coaches on the hot seat heading into conference tourneys
March 7, 2018

Mark Fox might need an improbable run through the Southeastern Conference tournament to save his coaching job.

He's hardly alone on the college basketball hot seat.

From Georgia's Fox to Pittsburgh's Kevin Stallings to UConn's Kevin Ollie, numerous coaches went into conference tournaments knowing their jobs could be in jeopardy without a few more wins.

Excluding employment decisions that might be affected by myriad off-the-court issues, such as Auburn (Bruce Pearl) and Arizona (Sean Miller), here are some schools that might soon be looking for a new coach, if they haven't already started the process:

GEORGIA

In a year where Kentucky and Florida ceded their dominance at the top of the Southeastern Conference standings, the Bulldogs squandered an opportunity for a breakthrough.

It could mark the end of Fox's nine-year tenure , which has featured only two NCAA Tournament appearances (both of which were one-and-done).

While hardly a traditional powerhouse, Georgia certainly expected better from a team that featured Associated Press SEC player of the year Yante Maten. The Bulldogs are just 16-14 (7-11 SEC) heading into Wednesday's first-round matchup against Vanderbilt in the conference tournament.

After weather issues delayed his team's arrival in St. Louis by four hours, Fox said on a hastily assembled teleconference that there have been no discussions with athletic director Greg McGarity about his job status.

''I have not been told that we have to win a certain number of games to advance through the tournament,'' Fox said. ''I'd really like this tournament, like every game we've played the last nine years, to be about our team and these kids and trying to find them some success. It should not be about the coach.''

Ten years ago, in an SEC tournament remembered for a tornado striking the Georgia Dome, the Bulldogs pulled off a stunning SEC triumph after finishing last during the regular season. That performance saved Dennis Felton's job for the moment, but he didn't even make it through another full season.

Fox appears to be in a similar situation, requiring five wins in five days to even get a shot at Year 10.

PITTSBURGH

The Panthers capped a historically awful season with a 67-64 loss to Notre Dame in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Tuesday night .

Now the question is: Will Stallings return for a third year?

While it would be unusual to fire a coach after such a short tenure, these are dark times in Pittsburgh. Stallings' team lost all 19 games against ACC opponents this season and is just 24-41 overall since he arrived from Vanderbilt.

Also working against Stallings: He wasn't a popular choice from the outset, and the current athletic director, Heather Lyke, isn't the one who hired him.

''We knew this was going to be a little bit of a tough season,'' Stallings said. ''We didn't know it was going to be this tough.''

CONNECTICUT

Ollie has the 2014 national championship on his resume, as well as an American Athletic Conference title from just two seasons ago. But the Huskies have taken a significant fall since then.

After slipping to 16-17 last season, UConn is just 14-17 - and 7-11 in the league - heading into its AAC tournament opener against SMU on Thursday.

Athletic director David Benedict plans to evaluate Ollie after the season , and it's clear the boss isn't happy with the state of the program, which is also facing an NCAA investigation. On the other hand, Ollie's lucrative contract would require a buyout of some $10 million.

''When you come to a place like UConn, you don't expect to hope to get to the tournament. You expect that it's a foregone conclusion,'' Benedict told the Hartford Courant. ''It's important we get that figured out because we need to be a tournament team.''

IOWA

Fran McCaffery brushed off questions about his job security , despite an unexpectedly dismal season that ended last week with an overtime loss to Michigan in the earlier-than-usual Big Ten Tournament.

While the overall body of work and a contract extension may give McCaffery some extra security, there's no doubt the Hawkeyes faithful is on edge after a 14-19 campaign that included just five wins in 20 games against conference opponents. More troubling, Iowa wasn't even competitive at times, losing eight Big Ten games by double-digit margins and finishing last in the league in scoring defense.

''The season did not go as we hoped,'' McCaffery said. ''No question.''

The Hawkeyes could be headed for another long season if sophomore star Tyler Cook decides to leave.

LOUISVILLE

One of college basketball's most prestigious jobs could be opening up unless the Cardinals decide to remove the interim from David Padgett's title.

Padgett took over as coach after the firing of Rick Pitino, and any hope of keeping the job likely depends on at least making the NCAA Tournament.

Even then, there are other issues to consider.

All the uncertainty swirling around the NCAA coaching ranks because of an ongoing FBI probe could actually work in Padgett's favor, since some of the top potential candidates have been linked to the scandal. But being a former Pitino assistant could be a major strike against Padgett, especially if Louisville's new administration wants a totally clean reboot to the post-Pitino era.

The Cardinals' NCAA hopes took a blow last week when they lost to No. 1 Virginia on a buzzer-beating shot , so they've got some work to do in the ACC Tournament. Louisville (19-12, 9-9) faces Florida State (20-10, 9-9) in the first of four games Wednesday, a contest that will likely determine which school remains in the NCAA mix for at least one more day.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping up a winter Wednesday

13) ACC? Louisville 82, Florida State 74? Louisville?s interim coach David Padgett turned 33 last month; I?m guessing the last five months have been a blur for him, but his Cardinals played a great first half, leading 41-22 before hanging on at the end for their 20th win. Louisville will likely go on probation; has Padgett does enough to earn the full-time coaching gig?

Boston College upset NC State 91-87; they play Clemson Thursday.

12) Pac-12? Colorado 97, Arizona State 85? Sun Devils beat Xavier, Kansas before Christmas, were ranked 3rd in country at one point, but they lost five of their last six games, went 8-11 in Pac-12 play, and have zero right to bitch if they get left out of the Field of 68. Their RPI was 65 after this loss to Colorado, which made 13-21 3-pointers in this game.

Oregon State and Oregon both advanced with overtime wins; Beavers? three games with Washington this season were decided by total of 8 points.

11) A-14? UMass upset LaSalle 69-67; Explorers were 1-16 on arc, Minutemen 10-23.

10) Big X? Oklahoma State 71, Oklahoma 60? Sooners lost eight of their last 10 games, losing their last 10 games away from Norman. Bracketology people still have Oklahoma in the field of 68, but they?re not a very good team right now.

9) Mountain West? UNLV 97, Air Force 90 OT? Huge sigh of relief from the desert, as Rebels snap a 5-game losing skid and get their 20th win of the season. UNLV-Nevada Thursday; Wolf Pack crushed UNLV 101-75 in Las Vegas last week, but the Rebels won earlier in Reno.

8) Kansas center Udoka Azubuike won?t play in this week?s Big 12 tournament in Kansas City after he sprained the MCL in his left knee during practice Tuesday.

7) Los Angeles Rams are having an interesting offseason; they traded MLB Alec Ogletree to the Giants Wednesday for 4th and 6th-round draft picks- the move clears $5M in cap room, which begs the question as to just how much money they?re going to pay Aaron Donald this spring.

Ogletree was the quarterback of the defense, so it?ll be interesting to see who the new MLB will be and where that $5M in cap space is used. I?m pretty sure the Rams have five picks in the 6th round of the draft? they must think this draft is deep with talented players.

6) Missouri?s star recruit Michael Porter Jr was supposed to be America?s best freshman, but he played 2:00 in the season opener, then left with a back injury, hasn?t played since. He returns today in St Louis for the SEC tournament; how will his presence change the Tigers? chemistry?

5) Big East? St John?s 88, Georgetown 77? Hoyas beat St John?s twice during the season, but Red Storm shot 67% inside arc in this game and move on to play top-seeded Xavier Thursday. Hoyas lost their last five games; they took 32 3?s, only 30 2-point shots in this game.

4) C-USA? Tex-San Antonio 71, UTEP 58? Roadrunners went 11-7 in C-USA this year, after going 26-61 the previous five years; they?re 9-2 in last 11 games and play Marshall today.

3) SEC? South Carolina 85, Ole Miss 84? Gamecocks made 12-21 on arc, only 19-34 on foul line. Ole Miss buried a 3 from deep in left corner to cover the spread at the buzzer.

2) Sun Belt? Texas State 73, Coastal Carolina 66? Bobcats snapped a 9-game losing skid with win here; six of those nine losses were by 4 or fewer points or in OT.

1) For me, today and tomorrow are just as much fun as the first round of the NCAA tournament; dozens of games all over the country, teams either positioning for seeding next week, or trying to shock the world and get in the field of 68.

Today is 14 or 15 hours of great action; enjoy!!!

AAC Conference Tournament First Round betting preview and odds

The last of the major tourneys to get underway during college basketball conference tournament week is the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Cincinnati, Wichita St., Houston, and Tulsa all earned byes directly to the quarterfinals and the conference's other eight teams will battle Thursday in Orlando.

Tournament to be played at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Southern Methodist Mustangs vs Connecticut Huskies (+2, 131.5)

Connecticut and SMU have each had plenty of success at the American Athletic Conference Tournament. But the former champions, thanks in large part to injuries and rebuilding seasons, kick off the tournament Thursday in Orlando, Fla. The ninth-seeded Mustangs won the tournament in 2015 and 2017 while the eighth-seeded Huskies prevailed in 2016 and went to the finals two other times.

Junior guard Jalen Adams, who leads the Huskies in scoring, ignited UConn's run to the 2016 conference tournament title the last time it was played at Orlando's Amway Center. Adams leads the Huskies with 18.5 points and averaged 24.5 points over his past four games. Vital adds 14.6 points and a team-best 5.4 rebounds while junior wing Terry Larrier - who graduates in May and plans to go pro after this season - adds 14.0 points and 4.7 rebounds.

The Mustangs have lost eight of nine without leading scorer Shake Milton (broken bone in right hand) and he is not expected to play this week. Junior guard Jahmal McMurray (14.4 points in 20 games) is leading the Mustangs with 18.9 points in the nine contests without Milton (18.0 points). Sophomore guard Jimmy Whitt is adding 10.9 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds in that stretch, which SMU played with seven scholarship players. Senior Ben Emelogu II leads the conference in 3-point shooting (47.5 percent) and adds 10.3 points while freshman starter Ethan Chargois averages 9.4 points and 4.4 rebounds.

TRENDS:

* Mustangs are 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss.
* Huskies are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. American Athletic Conference.

South Florida Bulls vs Memphis Tigers (-7.5, 133)

Memphis takes on South Florida in an American Athletic Conference Tournament first-round contest Thursday at Amway Center in Orlando, with the Tigers looking for a little stability and revenge. The 12th-seeded Bulls come in having won two straight, including a 24-point blowout of the fifth-seeded Tigers a week ago which has helped fuel speculation that Memphis coach Tubby Smith may be on his way out.

USF comes in hot behind the play of 6-11 junior forward Malik Martin (6.4 points, 4.7 rebounds), who averaged 17 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two victories last week. Martin?s interior play should open things up for the Bulls? two deadly outside shooters, with Stephan Jiggetts (team-high 12.4 points, 3.2 assists) and Payton Banks (11.6 points) both connecting on 59 3-pointers this season.

Memphis is still trying to find its offensive rhythm after the loss for the season of leading scorer Jeremiah Martin (18.9 points) to a broken left foot three games ago. Junior Kareem Brewton has stepped into the point guard role in Martin?s absence and is coming off a career-high 22-point effort in a win over East Carolina on Sunday. Smith has had trouble at times getting his team to focus on the court, and he'll have even more in the AAC Tournament as the rumors of former Memphis All-American Penny Hardaway replacing Smith swirl around the program.

BETTING STATS:

6gvb75.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Memphis opened as 7-point favorites and that number was quickly bet up to -7.5 (no word on whether or not Penny Hardaway rumors contributed to this move). The total hit betting boards at 133 and has yet to move.

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Bulls are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games.
* Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. American Athletic Conference.
* Over is 5-0 in Bulls' last 5 neutral site games.
* Over is 8-2 in Tigers' last 10 overall.
* Bulls are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

Tulane Green Wave vs Temple Owls (-5.5, 143)

No. 7 seed Temple and 10th-seeded Tulane are set for their rubber match Thursday in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The winner will advance to Friday's quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 seed Wichita State. The Owls and Green Wave split two meetings this season with each winning on the other's home court. Tulane won 85-75 at Temple in late December behind Melvin Frazier's 25 points, but the Owls got revenge in early February with an 83-76 road win thanks to Shizz Alston Jr.'s 15 points and a career-high 10 assists.

Entering this matchup, Temple has lost four of its last five as some of its key players have stumbled to the finish line. Quinton Rose is the team's top scorer (14.9 points) and has scored in double figures in 10 straight games. Alston averages 13 points but has shot only 31.3 percent over the last five outings - and he hasn't attempted a foul shot in four straight games.

Tulane has won only once in its last nine outings and that victory came against last-place South Florida. The Green Wave have the nation's 200th-ranked offense entering Wednesday's action, and their last two games (49 points and 51 points) have been particularly problematic. They have shot just 33 percent from the field in those two outings and are 7-of-28 from 3-point range, not to mention 33 combined turnovers.

BETTING STATS:

1hv32s.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Temple opened as 5.5-point favorites and as of Wednesday night that number has yet to move. The total hit betting boards at 143 and has also been steady.

MATCHUP CHART:

fmncjb.jpg

TRENDS:

* Green Wave are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Owls are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 neutral site games.
* Under is 6-0 in Green Wave's last 6 neutral site games.
* Over is 12-3-1 in Owls' last 16 neutral site games.
* Green Wave are 1-5-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

East Carolina Pirates vs Central Florida Knights (-13.5, 128.5)

Central Florida is hoping the momentum from a win in its regular-season finale will carry over to a first-round contest in the American Athletic Conference Tournament against East Carolina Thursday at Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. The sixth-seeded Knights topped Tulane on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak, while the Pirates, the 11th seed, come into the tournament having dropped five straight.

Guard B.J. Tyson leads the way offensively for interim coach Michael Perry, averaging 15 points while playing 36.4 minutes a game. Fellow guards Isaac Fleming (12.9 points, 5 assists) and Shawn Williams (12.2 points) give the Pirates lots of firepower on the perimeter, though they'll have to deal with the defensive pressure applied by the Knights. The Pirates rank last in the AAC in 3-point field-goal percentage, hitting just 30.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Coach Johnny Dawkins' squad is third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 61.3 points, but UCF only averages 62.8 points, making the margin for defeat very narrow. Guard B.J. Taylor has helped with that some since he returned in mid-January from a foot injury, averaging a team-best 15.5 points, including six 20-point performances in the last 12 games. With 7-6 Tacko Fall out of the Knights' lineup, much of the inside work has fallen on senior A.J. Davis, who has been outstanding, ranking second in the AAC in rebounding with 8 boards per game.

BETTING STATS:

2h5mzau.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Central Florida opened as big 13.5-point favorites and as of Wednesday night that number has yet to move. The total hit betting boards at 128.5 and has also been steady.

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Pirates are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
* Knights are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 neutral site games.
* Over is 12-4 in Pirates' last 16 overall.
* Under is 4-0 in Knights' last 4 neutral site games.
* Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
