November 25, 2017

Senior guard Dakota Mathias had a game-high 24 points to lead four Purdue players in double figures to help the No. 18 Boilermakers to an 89-64 win over slumping No. 2 Arizona on Friday in the seventh-place in the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Carson Edwards added 22 points, Vince Edwards had 17 and Isaac Haas had 12 points for Purdue (5-2).

Purdue avoided its first three-game losing streak since Dec. 13-22, 2014, and Arizona (3-3) suffered its first three-game losing streak since Feb. 13-25, 2010 in Sean Miller's first season as Arizona's head coach.

Arizona freshman Deandre Ayton had 22 points and eight rebounds, but he fouled out with 4:32 left.

No. 1 Duke 85, Texas 78 (OT)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Marvin Bagley III Bagley finished with a double-double of 34 points, nine of which came in overtime, and 14 rebounds as Duke defeated Texas in the second round of the Phil Knight 80 Invitational.

Down by 13 with 7:37 to play, Duke staged a massive comeback to force overtime.

Bagley scored the first point of overtime and Duke never trailed again. Grayson Allen added 12 points and five assists before fouling out with 2:00 left to play in regulation.

Texas was led by Dylan Osetkowski as he finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

No. 3 Kansas 102, Oakland 59

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas rang up triple digits for the second straight game, rolling past Oakland in its second HoopHall Miami campus game.

The Jayhawks' inside duo of sophomores Udoka Azubuike and Mitch Lightfoot dominated inside for 32 points and 18 rebounds as Kansas improved to 5-0 in front of a sellout crowd in Allen Fieldhouse.

Azubuike, the nation's leading field goal shooter, finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes, while Lightfoot scored 11 points and added eight rebounds.

No. 5 Villanova 64, Northern Iowa 50

Villanova guards Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges combined for 34 points in the win over Northern Iowa in the championship game Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Bridges scored 18 points while making 8 of 14 shots from the field. He also tallied seven rebounds. Brunson had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. He had four assists and two steals.

A 10-0 Arkansas late in the second half cut the deficit to 6, 74-68, with 3:32 to play. North Caroline responded with its own 11-0 run in which Theo Pinson threw down a massive dunk in traffic.

No. 14 Minnesota 69, Massachusetts 51

Amir Coffey added 10 points for the Golden Gophers (6-0), which never trailed and led by as many as 26 points early in the second half.

Luwane Pipkins scored 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting for the Minutemen (3-2), who have just eight scholarship players.

Arizona State 102, No. 15 Xavier 86

Senior guard Tra Holder's career-high 40 points and a 58-point second-half outburst powered Arizona State to the upset in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Holder set a career mark of 35 points just five days ago, but shattered that with a shooting performance of 14 of 22 and 5 of 8 from 3-point range.

Arizona limited Xavier star Trevon Bluiett to 11 points.

No. 16 Texas A&M 81, Pepperdine 65

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six things I learned from listening to Bill Walton this week??.

? Bill Walton and his brother Bruce are only brothers ever, where one brother played in a Super Bowl and the other won an NBA championship.

? A massive collection of Bob Dylan memorabilia is being housed in a museum in Tulsa.

? Nike founder Phil Knight has twin sisters; Nike was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports.

? Oregon is the 33rd state in the United States of America.

? Bill Walton has had 37 orthopedic operations during/after his playing career.

? Powell?s Bookstore in Portland is the biggest independent bookstore in America.

Late Update: In a game that ended at 2:20am here in the east, Florida beat Gonzaga in double OT, 111-105 at the PK80 tournament in Oregon.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) If you coach basketball, find a tape of Wichita State? look for #0, Rashard Kelly, then play the tape and have your kids watch how hard Kelly plays. (I know, its not tape anymore)

Kelly is scoring 4.8 pts/game, no big deal, but against Marquette, he had 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 blocked shots. He dominated the game with sheer physical effort. At one point, he blocked a breakaway layup, then blocked the kid again when he got the rebound, then ran down to the other end and got an offensive rebound, all without any whistles blowing.

Every great team has a player like Kelly who busts his butt and does the dirty work.

12) Gonzaga has 14 basketball players; they represent 10 states in this country, plays three other countries.

11) For older guys like me who love basketball, a historic perspective; Gonzaga today is a lot like UNLV was 25-30 years ago. Gonzaga has grabbed the entire WCC by the collar and picked up their profile, much like the Rebels did with the Big West in the 80?s.

Teams like New New Mexico State/Cal-Santa Barbara became top 50 programs because they got national TV exposure playing against Jerry Tarkanian?s UNLV teams in the Big West. Ever heard of the Aggies or Gauchos lately? They don?t get on TV since UNLV left the Big West.

Players like Brian Shaw, Eric McArthur were big time players who went to UCSB. New Mexico state got at-large bids to the NCAA?s with players like Sam Crawford, Tracey Ware.

Nowadays, St Mary?s/BYU?s profile have been raised by its nationally-televised games with Gonzaga. The rest of the WCC has been stumbling over itself trying to close ground with the top of the WCC- half the league?s teams have changed coaches recently.

As long as Mark Few stays at Gonzaga, it will be tough for the WCC to unseat the king.

10) Random Cal-Santa Barbara trivia; Joe Pasternack is the Gauchos? new basketball coach; his wife is the sister of ESPN play-by-play guy Roxy Bernstein.

9) Houston Rockets beat Denver 125-95 the other night; saw a stat I?ve never seen before. One of the Rockets, Luc Mbah a Moute, was +57; the Rockets were outscored 59-32 while he was off the court- they outscored Denver 93-36 while he was on the floor. Never saw something like that.

It is a modern NBA record.

9) Rice is off to a 1-4 start under new coach Scott Pera, who was James Harden?s high school coach at Artesia HS in Los Angeles.

8) 6-5 freshman Justin Minaya is scoring 8 pts/game for South Carolina?s hoop team; his dad is former Mets? GM Omar Minaya.

7) Last six years, Dayton?s leading scorer has been a guy who transferred into the Flyers? program.

6) Miami Marlins fired TV guy Rich Waltz this week; he was the Marlns? voice for the last 13 years. Derek Jeter isn?t making a lot of friends early in his tenure in Miami.

I watch a ton of Marlins games, having Stanton/Ozuna on my fantasy team. Waltz is as a good an announcer as anyone else at the big league level? he also does college basketball in the winter, and is really good at that. Not sure why decisions like these get made.

5) Surprised that Dick Vitale isn?t at the Phil Knight/Nike tournament in Oregon- they have him at the Battle of Atlantis.

4) Kicker Jay Feely was in the NFL for 14 years for six teams; he does TV work now. The other day, they showed a clip of Feely kicking for the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena League- it was the only Arena League game Feely kicked in. Tampa Bay cut him after one game, then he went on to kick in 211 NFL games. Go figure.

3) Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese baseball player who will be very rich very soon; he will be the subject of a bidding war. Apparently Mr Ohtani wants to pitch and hit in the major leagues, so it will be interesting to see how that all plays out.

2) Disappointed to report that after this year, Chaminade will be in the Maui Classic every other year, instead of every year. Guess a lot of teams want to spend Thanksgiving in Maui, so the D-II hosts were demoted to playing every other year.

1) This was the 34th Maui Classic; of the first 33 Maui Classic champs, 31 made the NCAA tournament, 13 made the Sweet 16, 8 made the Final Four, 5 won the national title.

NCAA Basketball Preview
November 10, 2017

Kentucky opened 10-to-1 when the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook put it out its initial figures last April just before North Carolina denied Gonzaga the championship for all mid-majors.

John Calipari deserves that kind of juice, but hasn't won since 2012 and will need to do his best coaching job ever to add to his legend in '18. The Wildcats are probably more raw than they've been at any point since missing the NCAA tournament with that post-championship group led by freshmen Willie Cauley-Stein, Nerlens Noel and Archie Goodwin.

While the 'Cats won't miss the NCAAs, you don't want to get in on them at the 8-to-1 spot where they currently reside. You'll be able to get better bang for your buck down the road since the belief here is that Kentucky will lose a handful of times before getting it together since they play Kansas, Virginia Tech, UCLA and Louisville before the SEC season arrives.

With the starting backcourt of De'Arron Fox and Malik Monk off to the NBA, freshmen Quade Green, Hamidou Diallo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jemarl Baker will man the guard spots. Another freshman, Kevin Knox should be the best player unless fellow frosh forward P.J. Washington makes the most improvement. The 'Cats will be as athletic as ever, but there will be growing pains that make backing them as a favored group rather foolish at the current odds.

Defending champion North Carolina returns point guard Joel Berry and wing Theo Pinson, but lost bigs Kennedy Meeks, Isaiah Hicks and Tony Bradley in addition to key wing Justin Jackson. Berry will miss the first few games with a broken hand suffered after he punched a wall in frustration after losing a video game. After opening at 12/1, the defending champs are now 30-to-1, offering tremendous value to back what would be the first successful repeat bid since 1973. I don't see that happening either.

Who should you get down on? Glad you asked.

Final Four projections

Arizona, Duke, Kansas and Michigan State are my choices to reach the 2018 Final Four in San Antonio's Alamodome, which would make for a fantastic field but looms as unlikely since there are no Cinderellas in that group. We've grown accustomed to seeing teams like Gonzaga, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Wichita State and Butler make runs to end up among the last four standing, and there's certainly enough parity for a team we don't currently see coming to add their name to that list.

Eric Musselman's Nevada Wolf Pack are at 200-to-1, the same odds that heavyweights like Syracuse and Indiana carry into the season.

Cincinnati is loaded and a great option at 100-to-1 since many believe that Mick Cronin will have his best, deepest team at his disposal despite the loss of point guard Troy Caupain.

Arizona (6/1) features one of the nation's top freshmen in DeAndre Ayton, a 7-foot-1 athletic specimen originally from the Bahamas. He'll do most of his damage in the paint but has range out to the perimeter and should make life easy for standout veteran guards Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Allonzo Trier.

Duke (4/1) returns everyone's favorite temperamental guard, Grayson Allen, who will share the stage with a pair of elite recruits in freshman forwards Marvin Bagley and Wendell Carter in addition to wing Gary Trent, Jr and point guard Trevon Duval. This class is the best in the country, superior to Kentucky's, as Mike Krzyzewski continues to thrive by signing one-and-dones.

Kansas (12/1) lost point guard Frank Mason III and star wing Josh Jackson, but remain formidable due to terrific depth. It should help the cause that the Jayhawks will work against a scout team led by Memphis transfers Dedric Lawson and K.J. Lawson in addition to Cal import Charlie Moore. All played major minutes at their old schools before defecting to Lawrence.

Michigan State (4/1) got a major boost when forward Miles Bridges opted to return for his sophomore season after dropping jaws when he was healthy enough to play last season. If he can stay out on the floor, Tom Izzo will get the best out of him and a sophomore-laded group featuring Cassius Winston, Joshua Langford and Nick Ward, all of whom put in work last season. Veterans Tum-Tum Nairn, Gavin Schilling and Kenny Goins add depth as glue guys, making this one of Izzo's deeper squads.

Young Names to Know

It seems like every year we go in knowing very few of the names who end up dominating the college landscape since the current trend is that the elite freshmen rarely need an adjustment period. Of the first 11 picks in the 2017 NBA Draft, 10 were freshmen. The outlier was French point guard Frank Ntilikina, also a teenager.

This season, Missouri's Michael Porter, Jr., Duke's Bagley, Arizona's Ayton and Alabama's Collin Sexton are the four freshmen most likely to have an immense impact in becoming the next crop of one-and-dones. Louisville's Brian Bowen, at the heart of the latest scandal that cost Rick Pitino his job, deserves mention in this group if he can get qualified.

If you're into more veteran-laden teams, take a look at West Virginia, Xavier, Villanova, Florida, Miami (FL), Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Northwestern and aforementioned Cincinnati. Wichita State will challenge the WCC's Zags and Saint Mary's Gaels for the honor of being the country's top-ranked mid-major but note that the Shockers are now in the American Athletic Conference.

Top 25 Capsules
November 25, 2017

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Bruce Brown and Anthony Lawrence scored 14 points each to lead No. 11 Miami to an 86-65 victory over North Florida on Saturday.

Dewan Huell finished with 13 points for the Hurricanes (5-0) while Ja'Quan Newton and Chris Lykes had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Brown scored six points in a 16-2 run that helped Miami build a 17-point lead midway through the first half. Brown's dunk with 7:04 remaining capped the surge and gave the Hurricanes a 26-9 lead.

JT Escobar scored 16 points for the Ospreys (1-7).

No. 14 Minnesota 89, No. 25 Alabama 84

NEW YORK (AP) - Nate Mason scored 20 points to lead Minnesota over Alabama, which finished the game with just three players, in the championship game of the Barclays Center Classic.

Jordan Murphy scored 19 points and and grabbed 14 rebounds for Minnesota (7-0) while Isaiah Washington added 14 and Amir Coffey finished with 12.

Collin Sexton had 40 points for the Crimson Tide while Riley Norris had 13 and Galin Smith added 10.

Only the third ever matchup between the Southeastern Conference and Big 10 programs was marred by a near brawl involving Minnesota's Dupree McBrayer and Alabama's Dazon Ingram in front of the Crimson Tide bench 6:21 into the second half. Just 27 seconds earlier, Minnesota's Nate Mason and Sexton were each assessed technical fouls for talking to each other, and the Golden Gophers senior guard was ejected.

During the fracas, Alabama players Donta Hall, Alex Reese, Daniel Giddens, Avery Johnson Jr. and Herbert Jones came off the bench and were ejected. Ingram, who had four fouls at the time of the scuffle, fouled out.

Nearly 3 minutes after the McBrayer-Ingram incident, Alabama lost John Petty to a leg injury, and the Crimson Tide ended the game playing just three players.
