Notre Dame, Villanova shine in early season hoops tourneys
November 27, 2017

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) Notre Dame, Villanova and Wichita State have serious potential for deep March runs.

Duke's freshmen are fast learners.

And Arizona is in an early funk.

Three Thanksgiving-week tournaments - the Maui Invitational, the Battle 4 Atlantis and the PK80 Invitational's two brackets - provided early tests for some of college basketball's top teams. Arizona failed miserably, the Blue Devils' youngsters passed with impressive marks and the Wildcats from Philly showed they are a group to be reckoned with this year.

''That's what happens in college basketball,'' Villanova coach Jay Wright said after winning a surprise-filled Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. ''You're really never as good as everyone says you are and you're not as bad as people say you are.''

Here are some takeaways from those holiday tournaments:

UPPERCLASSMEN CAN PLAY

Notre Dame:
The Irish have great senior leadership in preseason Associated Press All-American Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell, along with multiple scoring options and plenty of grit. The Fighting Irish rallied from 16 down in the Maui final to beat Wichita State in Lahaina, Hawaii, and made every needed big play late.

Colson (25 points, 11 rebounds) can do it all, while Farrell - the tournament's MVP - is the perfect point guard for this group.

Wichita State:
The Shockers have veteran talent, though their Maui letdowns - trailing big against California , squandering the lead to the Irish - offer plenty for coach Gregg Marshall to work from in practice. Still, the Shockers are good at both ends, ranking in the top 12 of KenPom's adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency numbers through Saturday's games.

Worth noting: The Shockers nearly won in Maui without Markis McDuffie. Last year's top scorer and rebounder is out until next month with a stress fracture in his foot, so there's room to grow.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CATS

Arizona:
The Wildcats entered the Bahamas with a No. 2 ranking. They left with a stunning 0-3 showing.

The Wildcats allowed North Carolina State, SMU and Purdue to shoot 45 percent overall and 42 percent from 3-point range. There were rebounding and turnover problems against SMU (20 offensive rebounds by the Mustangs, 20 turnovers by the Wildcats). And they weren't competitive against Purdue in the seventh-place game.

While Allonzo Trier and freshman Deandre Ayton are good starting points, the Wildcats need sophomore guard Rawle Alkins back from a preseason foot injury to find some cohesiveness at both ends.

Villanova: Preseason AP All-American Jalen Brunson gets a lot of the attention, but 6-foot-7 redshirt junior Mikal Bridges is giving the Atlantis champion Wildcats a scary 1-2 punch. Bridges averaged 9.8 points last season, but has made a huge leap (18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 59 percent shooting) to start this one.

That includes the defensive end, where he can defend multiple positions and seemingly spent all three days throwing himself on the floor to chase loose balls - and possibly catching a few floor burns, too.

DUKE'S FAB FIVE

The top-ranked Blue Devils are all in on their touted freshman class.

Grayson Allen fouled out late in Friday's comeback win against Texas at the PK80 Invitational, so Duke went with five freshmen - Marvin Bagley III, Wendell Carter Jr., Trevon Duval, Gary Trent Jr., and Alex O'Connell - for nearly all of the final 2 minutes of regulation and overtime.

Then came Sunday's comeback against Florida . The Blue Devils closed the game on an 8-0 run - fittingly all scored by freshmen - to win the Motion Bracket championship in Portland, Oregon.

In those two games, Mike Krzyzewski's rookie-led team rallied from 16 down against Texas and 17 down against Florida in the final 10-plus minutes. And Bagley followed his 34 points and 15 rebounds against the Longhorns with 30 points and 15 boards against the Gators.

And it's still only November.

WORTH THE TROUBLE

Now everyone who watched can see why North Carolina State worked so hard to get Braxton Beverly on the court.

The 6-foot freshman missed the first two games amid a much-publicized NCAA eligibility dispute tied to him attending summer classes at Ohio State before coming to N.C. State. He's not an elite talent but his skillset fits new coach Kevin Keatts' offensive scheme and he provides backcourt depth needed for the Wolfpack's pressure defense.

Beverly scored 20 points in the Atlantis upset of Arizona . And he's apparently earned Keatts' trust, playing 34 and 35 minutes in the following two games while offering potential as an outside shooter and secondary ballhandler.

OTHER TAKEAWAYS

Arkansas:
The Razorbacks clearly can score, but they might contend in the Southeastern Conference if they defend like they did in Sunday's PK80 win against Connecticut . Jaylen Barford and Daryl Macon lead the way, but a key could be the development of 6-11 freshman Daniel Gafford (12.8 points).

Gonzaga: The Bulldogs may be ahead of schedule after losing so much from last year's national runner-up. Josh Perkins has become the leader and Johnathan Williams (39 points) showed he can be an offensive force in the double-overtime PK80 loss to Florida .

Michigan State: The Spartans lost their first marquee matchup to Duke in the Champions Classic in Chicago, but offered a reminder of their upside by locking down reigning national champion North Carolina in the PK80 Victory bracket championship game.

Purdue: Coach Matt Painter's Boilermakers bounced back from two losses in Atlantis by routing Arizona, but he wants to see his high-scoring bunch grind out a win on a bad shooting night.

Tennessee: The Volunteers - who finished third in Atlantis - look ready to cause problems in the SEC under third-year coach Rick Barnes. Their athleticism allows them to pressure opponents, while they can run their offense through tough forward Grant Williams (15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds).

CINCINNATI (AP) Gary Clark had 14 point and seven rebounds, and No. 11 Cincinnati stayed unbeaten heading into its game against its crosstown rival by beating winless Alabama State 83-51 on Monday night.

The Bearcats (7-0) play at No. 21 Xavier on Saturday. The Musketeers have won seven of the last 10 in the crosstown rivalry, although Cincinnati won on its home court last season.

Facing a ranked team for the first time in five years, Alabama State (0-7) had 20 turnovers that led to 30 Cincinnati points. Branden Johnson led with the Hornets with 10 points.

Cincinnati won its 30th straight home game, a streak that spans two home courts. The Bearcats are playing this season at BB&T Arena at Northern Kentucky University while their on-campus arena is renovated. They went 18-0 at Fifth Third Arena last season.

The Hornets shot 48 percent from the field in the first half and out-rebounded the bigger Bearcats 15-12, but their 13 turnovers helped Cincinnati take control 46-26. The teams finished even on the boards at 34-34.

No. 18 VIRGINIA 49, WISCONSIN 37

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Kyle Guy scored 17 points, and Virginia held Wisconsin scoreless for more than 7 minutes in the second half in a victory in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Devon Hall added 16 points for the Cavaliers (7-0), who led by four points before scoring the next 12 to stretch the lead to 42-26 with 10:30 remaining.

Ethan Happ led Wisconsin (3-4) with 14 points and D'Mitrik Trice had 10, but the Badgers shot poorly all night. After arriving at John Paul Jones Arena averaging 75 points for the season, they got half that and finished 15 of 48 from the field (31 percent).

Virginia didn't shoot much better, hitting 23 of 60 shots (38.7 percent), but the Cavaliers outrebounded the Badgers 39-30 and outscored them 34-18 in the paint.

Louisville at Purdue
November 28, 2017

Louisville saw its season delivered a jarring jolt when head coach Rick Pitino was fired just a few days before practice started. AD Tom Jurich was also dismissed by U of L and just last week, five-star recruit Brian Bowen was told that he?d never play for the school. It was an alleged payment to Bowen uncovered by the FBI in its investigation into corruption in college basketball that led to Pitino?s dismissal.

David Padgett, a 32-year-old assistant who was a three-year starter for the Cardinals early in Pitino?s tenure, was given the interim head-coaching gig. This was to be his second season as a U of L assistant after serving as Director of Basketball Operations for two years.

Louisville (4-0 straight up, 1-2 against the spread) is undefeated under Padgett here early, but his team will take a big step up in competition tonight when it goes on the road for the first time to take on Purdue. This game is a part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge that started Monday night.

As of early this morning, most books had Purdue (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) installed as a seven-point home favorite with a total of 145.5. The was no money-line price available yet.

U of L is off an 84-72 win over St. Francis (PA.) in a non-lined affair. Raymond Spalding was the catalyst against the Red Flash, producing 19 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Six U of L players scored in double figures, including Deng Adel (13), Anas Mahmoud (12 & 9 rebounds) and Quentin Snider, who finished with 11 points and six assists compared to only one turnover.

U of L owns wins over George Mason (72-61), Nebraska-Omaha (87-78) and Southern Illinois (84-42). The Cardinals picked up their only spread cover as 15.5-point favorites vs. the Salukis.

Adel is averaging a team-best 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game. Spalding is averaging 12.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 2.3 blocked shots per contest. Mahmoud is averaging 7.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 rejections per game.

Purdue (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) has won all three of its home games, compiling a 2-0 spread record. Matt Painter?s team salvaged a disappointing trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis by winning their third game in dominant fashion over Arizona. The Boilermakers rolled past the Wildcats, 89-64, as one-point underdogs. They raced out to a 50-33 halftime lead and coasted into the win column to avoid a three-game losing streak.

Dakota Mathias scored 24 points and dished out six assists compared to only one turnover. Mathis also pulled down five rebounds, had one steal and buried 9-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-6 launches from 3-point range. Carsen Edwards drained five treys on nine attempts in a 22-point effort. Vince Edwards contributed 17 points, eight boards and four assists.

Purdue?s defense limited Arizona star Allonzo Trier to a season-low eight points. Trier (24.5 points per game) had four turnovers compared to only one assist, and he hit only 3-of-10 shots from the field.

Before the win over UA, Purdue lost 78-75 to Tennessee in overtime and 77-73 to Western Kentucky. Back on Nov. 14, however, Painter?s team won 86-71 at Marquette. Isaac Haas led the Boilermakers with 22 points and five rebounds, while Carsen Edwards had 15 points and six boards.

Carsen Edwards is averaging 18.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while hitting 3?s at a 42.5 percent clip. Mathias is averaging 16.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest. He has a 33/6 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Haas is averaging 14.4 PPG and 5.3 RPG, while Vince Edwards is nearly averaging a double-double (14.0 PPG, 9.0 RPG).

These schools met in this same event last year at the KFC YUM! Center, where Louisville captured a 71-64 win and took the money as a six-point home favorite. Spalding had 11 points and nine rebounds, making all five of his shots from the field, while Mahmoud scored nine points before fouling out in just 14 minutes of playing time.

In the losing effort at U of L, Carsen Edwards struggled with his shot in a nine-point effort. He made only 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-6 from downtown.

The ?over? is 5-1 overall for the Boilermakers, 2-0 in their home outings.

The ?under? is 2-1 overall for the Cardinals.

Tip-off at Mackey Arena is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Ole Miss will play host to South Dakota State tonight at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network. The Rebels were favored by 8.5 early this morning with a couple of offshores listing the total at 154.5. The Jackrabbits beat Iowa last week as 7.5-point underdogs. Andy Kennedy?s Ole Miss (4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS) squad has failed to cover the number in four consecutive contests. The Rebels took their only outright defeat against Utah at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last Tuesday.

-- VCU?s Issac Vann is ?questionable? for tonight?s game vs. Appalachian State. Vann, who is averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game, sprained his ankle in a Nov. 20 loss to Marquette and missed the Rams? 83-69 win over Cal and 68-60 loss to Michigan.

-- South Carolina won a 78-61 decision Monday night at FIU as a 17-point road favorite. Chris Silva led the way for the Gamecocks with 26 points and 10 rebounds, converting 10-of-13 shots from the field. Malik Kotsar added 16 points, six boards, six assists, three steals and one block.

-- Virginia beat Wisconsin 49-37 last night as a seven-point home favorite. The 86 combined points easily stayed ?under? the 121.5-point total. Kyle Guy and Devon Hall led UVA with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Ethan Happ had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Badgers in the losing effort.

-- The ACC went 2-0 over the Big Ten on Monday night thanks to UVA?s win, in addition to Syracuse?s 72-70 triumph over Maryland at the Carrier Dome.

-- Northwestern and Georgia Tech will collide tonight in Atlanta at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. Duke now unanimous No. 1 in Top 25
November 27, 2017

Duke pulled off two big comebacks to become the unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's basketball poll. Now Arizona could use one of its own from a holiday-tournament stumble that dropped the Wildcats from No. 2 to out of the poll in a week.

The Blue Devils (8-0) were atop all 65 ballots in results released Monday after they won the PK80 Invitational's Motion Bracket in Portland, Oregon. They picked up the 11 first-place votes that last week went to Arizona, with the Wildcats (3-3) turning in a stunning 0-3 showing in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.

That made them the first team to go from No. 2 to unranked in a week since Louisville in 1986-87 after its own November tournament flop in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Kansas moved up to No. 2, followed by three teams that won Thanksgiving week tournaments: Michigan State (PK80 Invitational Victory Bracket), Villanova (Atlantis ) and Notre Dame (Maui Invitational).

Florida checked in at No. 6, followed by Kentucky, Wichita State, Texas A&M and Miami to round out the top 10.

It ultimately took only a month for the Blue Devils to convince all the poll voters that they're the nation's top team. They had roughly half the first-place votes (33) in the preseason poll, climbed to 54 votes after beating then-No. 2 Michigan State in the Champions Classic in Chicago - and now own them all.

That came after Duke rallied from 16 down to beat Texas in overtime and then from 17 down to beat the Gators in their PK80 bracket championship game late Sunday, with star freshman Marvin Bagley III turning in huge performances (34 points and 15 rebounds against Texas, 30 points and 15 rebounds against Florida).

''It's November, whatever happens we have to use it as the process of growth,'' Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said afterward. ''Our goal is to keep getting better.''

CHAMPS LOSE

Reigning national champion North Carolina slid from No. 9 to No. 13 after its first loss since last season.

The Tar Heels (5-1) lost 63-45 to the Spartans in the PK80 Invitational Victory finale while shooting a program-record-low 24.6 percent. It was their first loss since falling to Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament semifinals in March, snapping an 11-game winning streak that included their win against Gonzaga for the 2017 title in Glendale, Arizona.

TOP RISERS

Notre Dame (6-0) made the biggest leap, climbing eight spots after rallying to beat Wichita State in the Maui title game. Texas A&M (6-0) was up seven spots from No. 16 to No. 9 after a road win at then-No. 10 Southern California. And Baylor (5-0) jumped from No. 22 to No. 16.

LONGEST SLIDES

Arizona's farewell aside, Xavier (5-1) took the biggest fall by going from No. 15 to No. 21 after losing to Arizona State in the Las Vegas Invitational title game. USC (4-1) slid four spots from No. 10 to No. 14 after the Texas A&M loss.

NEWCOMERS

The Top 25 welcomed five new teams this week: No. 18 Virginia, No. 20 Arizona State, No. 22 Texas Tech, No. 23 TCU and No. 25 Creighton.

SLIDING OUT

Joining Arizona on the list of teams falling out of the poll were Purdue (No. 18 last week), Seton Hall (from No. 20), St. Mary's (from 21st) and UCLA (from 23rd).

MVC thriving despite loss of Wichita St.
November 27, 2017

The Missouri Valley Conference was supposed to be devastated by the loss of Wichita State. So far, the league has shown it might have been vastly underrated for 2017-18.

Nearly every team in the Valley is off to a strong start, boosting the conference's reputation in a season many thought could be the start of an inevitable transition toward a future as a one-bid league.

League teams are 46-16, the best combined start for the Valley since 1962-63.

Loyola (Chicago) and newcomer Valparaiso are 7-0. Northern Iowa is 5-2 - with its losses coming against No. 13 North Carolina and No. 4 Villanova - and six other Valley teams are at .500 or better.

The only team that with a losing record is Indiana State. But even the Sycamores (2-4) have a marquee win, opening the Archie Miller era at Indiana with a 21-point blowout in Bloomington.

The league's bullish start has been headlined by Loyola and Valpo - who are only in the Valley because Wichita followed Creighton out the door in the offseason.

The Ramblers have won their first seven games for just the fifth time in the last seven decades entering Tuesday's showdown at Boise State (5-1).

The Crusaders are 7-0 for the first time in 51 years behind the strong play of senior Tevonn Walker. He's averaging 16.1 points and 4.6 rebounds for a team so deep that 12 players are averaging at least 10 minutes a game.

''We have a lot of guys, and there's probably going to be a different player (stepping up) every night,'' Valparaiso coach Matt Lottich said.

The Panthers have been contenders in the Valley for nearly two decades, though they slipped to 14-16 and 9-9 in the league in 2016-17.

Northern Iowa has bounced back this year largely because of a dynamic young backcourt.

Freshman Tywhon Pickford had a breakout game in a win over N.C. State in the Bahamas, scoring 18 points with 18 rebounds, and sophomore point guard Juwan McCloud has scored in double figures in five of his last six games (12.7 points per game.)

Northern Iowa hosts UNLV on Wednesday, faces Iowa State on a neutral floor on Dec. 16 and hosts No. 21 Xavier on Dec. 22. With a strong showing in those three games, the Panthers might be in line for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament should they need one.

''Each year it looks a bit different. But we're going to fit it to our personnel,'' coach Ben Jacobson said. ''The whole key for us is having young guys that...have a good understanding and a good feeling for how to play.''

Bradley (6-1) and Evansville (5-1) have also gotten off to impressive starts. But perhaps no team in the league has been more surprising than Drake (4-1).

The Bulldogs let popular interim coach Jett Rutter go after last season, when they lost their last 10 games and finished 7-24, and hired Niko Medved from Furman.

Drake was picked to finish last in the league. But the Bulldogs haven't looked like a cellar dweller just yet.

Drake stunned Wake Forest 77-74 in its first game against a Division I opponent, lost to Colorado by just five and beat Drexel in double overtime 90-88.

Junior guard Reed Timmer has been consistent so far this season, averaging 23.6 points on 50.8 percent shooting from the field and 56.3 percent on 3s.

Timmer had 32 points on Sunday in a 79-67 win over Chicago State.

''Reed has been just phenomenal so far. He's a guy that, if they're going to give him looks, he's going to knock it down,'' Medved said.
