ESPN?s first Big Monday of college basketball in February features a pair of matchups between conference foes in both the ACC and the Big 12 with all four teams in need of a quality win on the resume heading into the final full month of the regular season.

Syracuse at Louisville (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Louisville -7, Total 130

Betting Matchup

Syracuse has scored a combined 95 points in its last two games; falling to Georgia Tech on the road 55-51 in a game that closed as a PICK before getting completely shutdown in Saturday?s 15-point loss at home to Virginia as a six-point underdog. The Orange (15-8) have failed to cover in seven of their last nine games as part of an overall record of 8-13 against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in 13 of those 21 games.

The Orange have not been known for their offensive firepower this season with an average of 68.1 points per game, but they have failed to cross the 60-point threshold in four of their last five games. Sophomore guard Tyus Battle led the team in scoring against the Cavaliers with 15 points and his scoring average on the year is a team-high 19.5 PPG. Syracuse has been one of the better teams in the nation at the other end of the court defensively with a points-allowed average of 62.7.

The Cardinals continue to struggle with just one straight-up victory in their last four games while going 2-2-1 ATS in their last five contests. They came up short against Florida State on Saturday in an 80-76 loss as four-point favorites at home. Louisville is 6-4 SU in ACC play with a 7-2-1 record ATS and the total has gone OVER in five of its last seven games. It is 16-7 SU and 11-9-1 ATS on the year.

Junior forward Deng Adel has been the Cardinals? leading scorer this season with 15.7 PPG as part of their 77.5-point scoring average on the year. He put up a game-high 17 points in Saturday?s loss with four of five starters ending the day in double figures. Louisville is giving up an average of 69.6 PPG, but this average has climbed to 77.3 points over its last four games.

It has been a rough stretch for West Virginia since mid-January with a SU 2-5 record in its last seven contests while going 3-4 ATS. It took out some of its frustration on Kansas State this past Saturday in an 89-51 romp as a seven-point home favorite. This was just the second time the Mountaineers scored 80 points or more in their last eight outings. Back on Jan. 6, they beat Oklahoma 89-76 as 5 ?-point favorites at home.

Even at 6-4 SU in Big 12 play, West Virginia is just one game off the pace for the regular season title. Led by senior guard Jevon Carter?s team-high 16.9 PPG, it has been able to average 82 points this season. He is one of five mountaineers averaging at least 10 PPG. Carter ended Saturday?s game with just six points after exceeding his scoring average in four of his previous six games. He scored 17 points in the first meeting against Oklahoma.

The Sooners have had their fair share of ups and downs since the middle of last month with a SU record of 2-4 in their last six outings while going a costly 1-6 ATS in their last seven games. They are 16-6 SU (9-13 ATS) overall with a perfect 11-0 SU run at home. The total stayed UNDER 153 ? points in Saturday?s 79-74 loss to Texas as three-point underdogs on the road. It has stayed UNDER in seven of Oklahoma?s last nine games.

Freshman guard Trae Young has garnered national attention as college basketball?s leading scorer this season with an average of 29.8 PPG, but he was held to 19 points against Texas after going off for 44 points in last Tuesday?s 98-96 victory against Baylor with the Sooners closing as 5 ?-point favorites at home. Oklahoma is first in the nation in scoring with an average of 89.9 PPG.

It was 75 degrees when I got off the plane in Las Vegas Monday; problem is, I had been on that plane for 11 hours? more on that tomorrow.

Spring training starts next week; here are some baseball notes to keep you warm.

13) Houston Astros led MLB with a .478 slugging percentage LY and struck out only 1,087 times; they?re only second team since 1948 (?95 Indians) to lead league in SP while striking out the least amount of times in the league.

12) Atlanta Braves used nine 3rd basemen LY; with Chipper Jones getting in Hall of Fame this summer, it has been five years since he left Atlanta and they still haven?t found a replacement.

11) Chicago Cubs are 27-15 in their last 42 games against their rivals from St Louis.

10) Cubs had 100 quality starts in 2016, when they won the World Series; that number slipped to 77 last year, which put a big strain on their bullpen.

Tennessee (17-5 straight up, 13-7 against the spread) will enter Rupp Arena tonight brimming with confidence. After all, Rick Barnes? third team has already taken it to Kentucky this season.

The Volunteers are on fire, compiling an 8-1 SU record and a 7-2 ATS mark in their past nine games. The only outright defeat during this stretch came in a 59-55 setback at Missouri as two-point road underdogs.

Kentucky can relate to losing in Columbia, as it has turned that trick twice. The Wildcats lost at South Carolina (76-68) on Jan. 16 and then went down Saturday at Missouri. They dropped a 69-60 decision to the Tigers as 2.5-point ?dogs, with the ?under? (140.5 points) easily cashing.

After losing to Frank Martin?s team, UK lost at home to Florida by a 66-64 count. At this point, it would be an understatement to imply that Big Blue Nation was abuzz with panic and anxiety. The pulse of BBN stabilized a bit with a 78-65 win over Mississippi State as a 7.5-point home favorite.

Then came a 10-point underdog spot at West Virginia in the marquee game of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Kentucky was greeted rudely by the Mountaineers, who dashed out to a 17-point first-half lead. Bob Huggins appeared to be his way to improving his career head-to-head record against John Calipari to 9-3.

UK freshman Kevin Knox wasn?t having it, though. Knox exploded for 34 points and seven rebounds to spark the ?Cats to an 83-76 comeback victory. The freshman guard drained 5-of-8 launches from 3-point range and his team dominated the glass with a 47-30 rebounding edge.

The optimistic UK fan saw the win at WVU as a turning point in the season, one that would propel this freshman-laden squad to great things. It was a view that didn?t age well, especially after last week?s home date with Vanderbilt.

The Commodores have been in the SEC cellar all season. They?ve been the only SEC school ranked outside of the RPI Top 100 since mid-December. Bryce Drew?s team started the season 1-14 ATS and lost a senior guard who was a double-figure scorer, Matthew Fisher-Davis, to season-ending shoulder surgery a few weeks ago.

Nevertheless, Vandy went into Rupp last Tuesday and led by six at intermission and by 12 with less than 16 minutes remaining. But Drew?s team had a meltdown of epic proportions in the final minute and especially the last two seconds. Vandy made just 1-of-5 free-throw attempts in the final minute, including a front-end miss by senior guard Riley LaChance with a three-point advantage and just 20 ticks left.

After a missed free throw while nursing a two-point lead, the ?Dores committed an unfathomably dumb foul about 60 feet from the basket with two seconds remaining. The ?Cats made the subsequent FTs to force overtime and eventually won 83-81 when Vandy missed a potential game-winning trey at the horn.

Cuonzo Martin?s squad jumped on Kentucky early and held a 28-18 lead at intermission. The Tigers led by as many as 14 and UK never mounted a serious threat in the second half. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was UK?s only player in double figures with 15 points, and he also dished out six assists and had a pair of steals. Missouri held Know to only five points, his second-lowest scoring output of the season.

BetOnline.ag opened Kentucky (17-6 SU, 10-13 ATS) as merely a one-point home favorite for tonight?s 7:00 p.m. Eastern tip on ESPN. As of early this morning, most spots had UK favored by 1.5 or two with a 141-point total for ?over/under? wagers.

UT has a 5-2 SU record and a 6-1 ATS mark in seven true road assignments. The Volunteers have covered the spread in three straight blowout wins by margins of 68-45, 84-61 and 94-61, including Saturday?s 33-point destruction of Ole Miss as 10-point home ?chalk.?

Lamonte Turner needed only eight shots and 21 minutes of playing time to score 17 points against the Rebels. Turner nailed 6-of-8 attempts from the field and 5-of-6 from downtown. The sophomore guard handed out four assists without committing a turnover.

Grant Williams added 17 points and four rebounds, and Admiral Schofield finished with 15 points and 12 boards. 13) Tuesday morning, the Indianapolis Colts announced they hired Josh McDaniels as their new coach. By 8pm Tuesday, McDaniels had backed out of the deal. Go figure.

12) There are reports the Patriots greatly sweetened McDaniels? contract to keep him in Foxboro; maybe they guaranteed he?d replace Bill Belichick when Belichick retires. Who knows what happened, but the Colts look foolish for now, even if they may be better off in the long run.

If someone isn?t 100% into being your football coach, then YOU DO NOT WANT HIM. Now the Colts have to regroup and take advantage of the opportunity to find a smart football person who really wants to coach the Indianapolis Colts. NFL head coaching jobs are in great demand.

it should be mentioned here that when McDaniels was coach of the Broncos, he drafted Tim Tebow in the first round. If you?re a Colts? fan, are you really sad about losing this guy?

11) Took the 6:20am flight from Albany to Chicago to Las Vegas Monday morning; was in the airport by 4:30am. Was on the plane at 6am- the flight took off??.at 10:53am. Oy.

It was a bright. sunny morning in Albany Monday; Southwest Airlines claimed it was too windy to take off, and that snow had blown on the one runway they could use, none of which made a hell of a lot of sense. Everything turned out pretty well, other than wasting four hours of my life that could?ve spent with me being asleep. In a bed. There were three empty seats on the Chicago-to-Vegas flight; one of them was the middle seat next to me. Leg room is tremendous!!!

Then I got a $100 voucher Tuesday in an e-mail from Southwest, apologizing for the delay. it was this e-mail that casually mentioned something about air traffic controllers, which made me wonder what was really up.

10) Bad news for the Knicks Tuesday night; Kristaps Porzingis tore his ACL, is out for the year.

9) Ben Simmons is a really good player and the 76ers will probably make the playoffs this year, but could he learn how to shoot? They said Tuesday that of 346 baskets this season, only seven of them came on shots longer than 16 feet. He is 0-10 behind the arc, but only seven baskets in 1,720 minutes longer than 16 feet?

Simmons is also shooting only 56.3% on the foul line.. If he wants to eventually be considered a truly great player, he better get himself in a gym this summer and improve his shooting.

8) Emeka Okafor played nine minutes for the Pelicans Monday night; it was his first NBA action in four years and 296 days, when he was on the Wizards. Okafor is 35 and banked just under $90M in his playing career. Good to see that he worked hard enough to get back in the NBA.

4) James Madison postponed basketball games scheduled for Thursday, Saturday over fears of a possible mumps outbreak in the program. One assistant coach had mumps; three other people, including one player, are suspected of having it now.

**Ohio State at Purdue**

-- Matt Painter has the best team of his 13-year tenure at his alma mater. The former guard for Gene Keady from 1989-93 replaced his predecessor in 2005 and has guided the Boilermakers to nine NCAA Tournament bids. Painter has taken Purdue to three Sweet 16 appearances and has only lost in the first round twice, but a trip to the Elite Eight has eluded his previous squads.

-- With its 12-0 record in Big Ten play and its school-record 19-game winning streak, Purdue is on track to garner the Midwest Region?s No. 1 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. There?s a lot of basketball to play until then, however, and there?s this matter of a Big Ten regular-season race that?s far from decided. In fact, the Boilermakers are only one game in front of Ohio St. in the league standings, meaning the Buckeyes can take the lead ? via the head-to-head tiebreaker -- in the conference race with a victory Wednesday at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.

-- As of Tuesday night, most betting shops had Purdue (23-2 straight up, 14-10 against the spread) installed as a 9.5-point favorite.

-- Although Purdue hasn?t tasted defeat since back-to-back losses to Western Kentucky and Tennessee on consecutive days at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas over the Thanksgiving holidays, it has failed to cover the number in four straight games. The Boilermakers won a 78-76 decision Saturday at Rutgers, surviving a late surge from the Scarlet Knights, who took the cash as 15.5-point home underdogs. Vince Edwards was the catalyst with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Dakota Mathias drained 4-of-7 bombs from 3-point land in a 16-point effort, while Carsen Edwards added 13 points, four boards and three assists. Purdue weathered a 31-point storm from RU?s Corey Sanders.

-- Purdue is unbeaten in 14 home games with an 8-5 spread record. Painter?s bunch has been favored by double digits in each prior Big Ten home tilt. The Boilermakers beat Louisville by a 66-57 count as 8.5-point home ?chalk? to narrowly cover in their only single-digit home favorite situation this season.

-- Carsen Edwards is averaging a team-best 16.6 points per game. The sophomore point guard has incredible speed and basically gets into the paint off the dribble whenever he feels like it. He is averaging 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game while hitting 39.6 percent of his 3-pointers. Vince Edwards (15.5 PPG, 7.8 RPG) is knocking down 41.5 percent of his treys and has handed out 77 helpers. Isaac Haas, the 7?2? center out of Hokes Bluff High School in Alabama, is averaging 14.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Mathias (12.4 PPG) has a 111/34 assist-to-turnover ratio and has drained 46.9 percent of his 3?s.

-- Purdue is No. 8 in the RPI Rankings and No. 3 in the Associated Press?s latest Top 25 poll. The Boilermakers are 5-1 against the Top 50 and 10-2 versus the Top 100. They have home wins over Louisville, Michigan, Northwestern, Nebraska and Maryland, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Arizona and Butler. Also, Purdue has won at Michigan, at Marquette and at Maryland.

-- Ohio State (20-5 SU, 12-11 ATS) owns a 4-0 record both SU and ATS on the road this year. This is the fifth underdog spot of the year for Chris Holtmann?s team, which has gone 2-2 both SU and ATS in the previous situations. This is the richest spot as ?dogs for the Buckeyes, who won 83-58 at Wisconsin as 7.5-point road puppies back on Dec. 2. The other games as ?dogs were at home (an 80-64 win over Sparty while catching 6.5 pts.) or on neutral floors.

-- Ohio State has been favored in each game since that Jan. 7 in over Michigan State. Holtmann?s troops are in a 1-3 ATS slump after failing to cover in Sunday?s 75-67 win over Illinois as 13-point home favorites. Keita Bates-Diop sparked his team to victory after trailing by 15 points in the first half. The junior forward produced 35 points and 13 rebounds while making 10-of-16 field-goal attempts. Jae?Sean Tate added 11 points, six boards and three assists, while Kaleb Wesson contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.

-- Bates-Diop paces the Buckeyes in scoring (20.2 PPG), rebounding (8.9 RPG) and rejections (1.7 BPG). Tate is averaging 12.8 points and 6.0 RPG, while C.J. Jackson (12.8 PPG) leads OSU in assists (4.2 APG) and steals (1.0 SPG).

-- Ohio State is No. 14 in the fresh AP poll and No. 20 in the RPI. Holtmann?s team has gone 2-4 versus the RPI Top 50 and 7-5 against the Top 100. The Buckeyes have only one quality road win at Northwestern, but they own home triumphs over Michigan, Michigan St., Northeastern, Maryland and Nebraska.

-- The ?under? is on an 8-2 run for Purdue to improve to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in its home games.

-- The ?under? is on a 6-1 run for the Buckeyes, who have watched the ?under? go 17-6 overall. However, totals have been a wash in OSU?s road assignments.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

**Texas A&M at Auburn**

-- Auburn (21-2 SU, 16-5 ATS) is the nation?s second-best team for our purposes, trailing only Nebraska in spread covers and Virginia in ATS winning percentage. As of late Tuesday night, most books had Bruce Pearl?s team listed as a 6.5-point favorite.

-- Auburn is undefeated in 12 home games with a stellar 8-2 spread record. The Tigers are 2-1 ATS in three games as single-digit home favorites.

-- AU is No. 5 in the RPI Rankings and No. 8 in the latest AP poll. Pearl?s bunch is 4-2 against the Top 50 and 10-2 versus the Top 100. The Tigers have road wins at Tennessee, at Missouri, at Mississippi St. and at Ole Miss. In fact, they?ve won two of those games by double-digit margins and all four by eight points or more. AU also has home victories over the likes of Arkansas, UConn, Ole Miss, Georgia and LSU, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Middle Tennessee (#22 RPI).

-- Since taking its lone SEC defeat at Alabama on Jan. 17, Auburn has won five in a row both SU and ATS. The Tigers captured a 93-81 win Saturday over Vanderbilt as 11.5-point home ?chalk.? They led by as many as 20 in the first half and held an 18-point advantage at the under-8 TV timeout. Bryce Brown dropped 25 points on the Commodores, burying 8-of-12 FGAs and 5-of-7 launces from long distance. Mustapha Heron added 23 points and five rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 attempts from downtown. Jared Harper contributed 14 points, 14 assists and three steals.

-- Brown is averaging a team-best 17.0 PPG for AU?s balanced offensive attack. The junior guard has made 41.5 percent of his 3-balls and is the SEC?s fourth-leading scorer. Heron (15.6 PPG, 5.6 RPG) is averaging a team-high 1.4 SPG, while Harper (12.9 PPG) has a 134/44 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- Texas A&M (15-8 SU, 9-11 ATS) has won back-to-back home games over Arkansas (80-66) and South Carolina (83-60) to seemingly right the ship. Billy Kennedy?s team has an outstanding non-conference resume, but a key suspension (three games for junior forward D.J. Hogg) and multiple injuries caused his club to start 0-5 in SEC play.

-- Texas A&M rocked the Gamecocks early and often, leading by 22 at intermission. Admon Gilder led five Aggies in double figures with 15 points, while Tyler Davis added 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one block in merely 19 minutes of playing time. Robert Williams finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

-- Davis is averaging team-highs in scoring (14.3 PPG) and rebounding (8.9 RPG). Hogg (12.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG) is knocking down 40.9 percent of his 3-pointers, while Gilder (11.7 PPG, 4.3 RPG) is making 80.0 percent of his FTAs. Williams (10.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG) is second in the SEC in blocked shots (2.6 BPG), and Duane Wilson (9.2 PPG) is averaging team-bests in assists (4.0 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG).

-- Texas A&M has limped to a 1-5 SU record and a 2-4 ATS mark in six road assignments.

-- Texas A&M is No. 25 in the RPI with a 5-6 record versus the Top 50 and a 10-8 record against the Top 100. The Aggies have home wins over Buffalo, Missouri, Arkansas, UC Santa Barbara, Ole Miss and South Carolina. They have neutral-court victories over West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Penn State, in addition to a road win at Southern Cal.

-- The ?over? is 11-10 overall for AU, 6-4 in its home games. The Tigers have seen the ?over? go 3-1 in their last four outings.

-- The ?under? is 11-9 overall for the Aggies, 3-3 in their six road assignments.

-- ESPN2 will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Nebraska is on a remarkable 13-1 ATS run in its past 14 games after winning 81-75 at Minnesota last night as a 3.5-point underdog. The Cornhuskers hooked up money-line supporters with a payout in the +160 neighborhood.

-- Boise State pulled off a remarkable 73-71 comeback win last night at New Mexico. The Broncos were 1.5-point road underdog early Tuesday afternoon, but most spots closed them as two-point road favorites. They trailed by 11 at halftime and at that time, I tweeted out that BSU -3 in the second half (+8 adjusted) was a play for me. Leon Rice?s club was down six with 53 seconds remaining, but that?s when Christian Eengfelder buried a 3-ball off a nice dish from Chandler Hutchison. Next, UNM?s Troy Simons committed a turnover and Hutchison trimmed the deficit to one on a run-out dunk with 22 ticks left. After Rice burned his last timeout, Hutchison got a steal and subsequent layup to put BSU in front. Justinian Jessup was fouled after the Lobos missed a trey and he made one of two FTs. UNM?s Anthony Mathis missed an interior runner for the tie and BSU?s Marcus Dickinson grabbed the rebound as time was expiring. UNM?s Joe Furstinger came after Dickinson to foul, but he lunged at Dickinson with a running start and went high to the throat area. It was a major cheap that should earn him a two-game suspension. The Lobos? entire bench emptied, as a couple of Broncos went after Furstinger. There was a skirmish that could?ve turned ugly, but fortunately better heads prevailed.

-- Tuesday?s Bubble Winners: Missouri at Ole Miss, Arkansas vs. South Carolina, Baylor vs. Oklahoma State and Providence vs. Georgetown (in come-from-behind fashion).

-- Arkansas guard Daryl Macon dropped 25 points on the Gamecocks. He?s scored 20 points or more in six straight games for the Razorbacks.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) St John?s 79, Villanova 75? Red Storm started out 0-11 in Big East, but in last five days, they beat both Duke/Villanova. Johnnies played only six guys in this game; four of their starters played 37:00+. Villanova was only 8-33 on arc in this game.

12) The NBA has strategically moved All-Star Weekend back until after football ends, to make the most of its exposure, but players are complaining now that the break should be earlier in the season, to give them a much-needed break from the 82-game schedule.

For example, Cleveland has already played 53 of its 81 games, so All-Star break will come after the 2/3 mark of the season. If they move it to January, it will compete with the NFL playoffs.

11) Gave this some thought during my 11-hour plane excursion Monday; If I?m the Eagles, I don?t trade Nick Foles. Carson Wentz is still the starter, but getting rid of Foles seems like a mistake.

10) An NBA game got rained out Wednesday night; seriously. Roof was leaking in the arena in New Orleans, so Pacers-Pelicans will play some other day. There was actually a puddle near one of the foul lines, which makes it difficult to play.

9) Speaking of the Pacers, they?re 30-19 when Victor Oladipo plays, 0-6 when he does not.

8) Turns out Indianapolis Colts already signed three assistant coaches to contracts before they got left at the altar by Josh McDaniels? one of the coaches is the defensive coordinator, so they almost have to hire a coach with offensive leanings, since the DC is already in place.

7) Former manager Joe Girardi has surfaced as a studio analyst on MLB Network, which is a good idea; hopefully he?ll do some games. Girardi is a smart guy; we can learn from him.

6) There is a actually a service where you pay people to walk your dog. If you have to pay someone to walk your dog??.

4) There have never been four QB?s taken in the first 10 picks of an NFL Draft; that surprised me, figured it would have happened at least once.

3) Cavaliers 140, Timberwolves 138 OT? Everyone at ESPN can take a deep breath; the Cavaliers won a game. You listen to their 60-minute pregame show and I think they mentioned Minnesota once the whole hour.

2) Another thing I was wondering about on the plane Monday: what would the average score of an NHL game be if neither team used a goalie, and they just played 6-on-6?
