I've noticed on here that a number of you are coaches or have coached so I'm looking for some help.......my nephew is 16 yr old, 6'3", 215 is being contacted by colleges such as Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, North Carolina, Arkansa, Tenn for sports (football, baseball) and a couple of colleges like Stanford, USC, UCLA for his academics.
This kid avg 43 yd punting, kicks field goals, plays defensive tight end and offensive tight end and can also play QB....baseball he pitches and plays both outfield and 1st. All this being said, as a Jr in school what things should he look out for. Other than a trainer he has and diet guidance what should he do to prepare for this onslaught of colleges feeding him BS ANy help greatly appreciated.

Does he plan on favoring one sport, or trying to play both? Sounds like he is a good student (if Stanford is in the picture). Unless he is already thinking the pros (which he might be), a top level college education is worth a ton.

I think it's football....his father and he are close and they look at this attention as "it's nice but if nothing comes of it, oh well". Your right about his academics, he's pretty good, but like any kid he loafs at times. I guess what I am most curious about is can he get a NO CUT/LOSS ride to school regardless of sports or academics. I have seen how fast coaches forget you the minute you get injured.

about the NO CUT/LOSS thing, there was a kid from this local area that signed with UK his senior year. He then was hurt about the 10th game of the season; I'm talking a bad injury with his knee with a projected over 2 year recovery. UK still honored his scholarship even though he had not attended and was going to be out his first 2 years of school secondary to the injury. I'm not sure if this is because it's a classy program or if it's a rule the colleges have to abide by. Best wishes to him.

Sounds like a good all-around kid. A good friend of mine is in his 5th or 6th year of minor league ball. He has moved up a league each year, but it's a tough road to travel. He had to go with his heart on which sport to choose. Keep him punting!!

Bottom line. If you see this guy, RUN the other way...

A friend of mines daughter is a soccer phenom, and as a freshman in high school, was getting bombarded with recruiting letters. Her dad told me the amount of letters they were gettting was ridiculous. She made a "verbal" commitment when she was a freshman and their whole family agrees that it was a great idea to make the decision early as it took a huge load off of them not having to deal with non stop phone calls and letters. As long as something like the IU fiasco going on right now doesn't happen, she will probably honor the commitment.

I know its important to explore all of the oppurtunities and make a wise decision you hopefully won't regret, but the sooner he can make his choice, the better off he will be in the short term.

I was a heavily recruited athlete in my sport and fielded all of the same letters, etc. They will eventually turn to phone calls once he is eligible to get them. And for me it wasn't in a big money sport.

This is my 2c. Go to a school that is solid both in sports and academically. If he ends up going pro, that's great. If not, he need to have a degree to fall back on. Decide what is important in a school...does location matter, does he want to be a dual-athlete, how good do academics need, what kind of academic support do they have....etc, etc. Make a list and then take recruiting trips. Those are really the key. Your nephew will know where he wants to go after the recruiting trips. The key is to go where he would be the happiest.

I'm biased since I went to North Carolina but it's a school that has everything. Great athletics, great tradition, excellent academics with very strong support for it's athletes in the classroom. The degree is respected in the working world should he not go pro. Our baseball team has been in the college world series 2 of the last 3 or 4 years. Our football program is on the cusp of becoming strong with Butch Davis at the helm. I can't speak for football specifically but I highly doubt they would pull his scholarship if he got injured, etc. It wouldn't have happened on my team and we don't have near the # of scholarships as football did.

Good luck
