LSU and Ohio St. ranked too low IMO. LSU should be ranked #2 because they are the 2nd most talented team in the country and they did win a NC 2 years ago. They deserve the high ranking. Purdue should be ranked higher missing UM and OSU on their schedule. Michigan is ranked too high. Georgia and AU are ranked too high as well. (not saying they can't finish there or higher but they don't deserve those rankings)

Why isn't Fresno St. in the top 25? IMO, they are the best non BCS school in the country. They always play tough OOC opponents. They deserve to be ranked in the top 25 with an experienced team coming back!

Scott,

I agree with everything you said except Purwho. Ohio St. is my darkhourse to win it all, and I think Michigan is a little overrated. LSU has tremendous talent.

Purwho will get exposed this year. Just watch...

Don't you think bringing in a new coach at LSU is a GOOD reason for not putting them at #2? Miles has never been anywhere were the fans are as crazy as they are in LSU.

Scott,

Who would you place in front of Auburn and Georgia? This is actually the most talented defense that Auburn has had since the late 80s....(talent-wise better than last year's #1 defense in the country, but with a new DC) so who would you move ahead of Auburn and Georgia???maybe Arizona St. and Cal???

YES! You are right. You make a valid argument. But I sorta do my pre-season polls differently. Especially the top 5 or top 10. I put more value on TALENT and CREDIBILITY. USC, OU, LSU for example have had recent success, so they earned credibility as elite teams. There are others too. I know what a team did last year doesn't really have anything to do with this years team. I don't really care. But that alone is not enough. I also look at the currect talent. Texas is loaded with talent, LSU as well, with maybe LSU having more, but unlike Texas, LSU has earned more credibility. Therefore, I think the 2nd most talented team in the country should be #2 who BTW has a lot of credibility. Now this is pre-season and I am very volatile with my rankings. After week 1 etc, I might change and I certainly don't believe a team should stay in front ONLY because they were already ranked above. If that team has done something that isn't worthy, and the team behind them has done more, I believe it is ok to jump the team in front.

All in all, I don't think putting a lot of weight on talent is a bad way to come up with your rankings. We all know LSU is loaded with talent. But they also have question marks and that is a reason they are not ahead of USC. Talent for the most part, wins out.

Good question. After taking closer look, they might be ok there. I def. would accept an argument for them to be there, especially AU because of last season. I just don't understand why so many SEC teams get ranked so highly and then at the end of the year you look back see they never deserved that pre-season ranking. But like i just said, after looking it over and thinking about it, they are ok at their ranking. ALTHOUGH you could switch them with a bunch of other teams. Lets say I think they are on par, but I could not make a better argument for the other teams to be ranked ahead of UGA and Auburn. So I have to say I was somewhat wrong with that statement and leave them where there at!

I would say these 2 teams should be ranked ahead........

Louisville
Purdue (because of schedule not as a team)

13. Georgia
14. Louisville
15. Auburn
16. Purdue
17. Texas A+M
18. Arizona St.
19. Boise St.

25. Pittsburgh

How is Auburn ranked too high at #15? I can't wait for this season because everyone thinks Auburn lost their whole entire team and can't compete. I wouldn't have it any other way though. We never do well when we have preseason hype. Hear me now and believe me later, Auburn is no joke, and they will feed off the fact that no one is giving them any respect.

BTW, if Texas, USC, Tennessee, or Michigan go undefeated, or just two out of those four go undefeated, all other 115 teams have NO CHANCE of playing for the national championship. So, please keep this in mind on prop bets for anyone besides these 4 teams.

I always take these "coache's Polls " with a grain of salt as most coaches are too busy to really know whats going on outside their schedule and conference. I have heard this many times from interviews with coaches from several different leagues. It makes good PR but I think that alot of cappers here at Mad Jacks could probably have a better slant on the perceived top "25."

Les Miles has never even been able to finish #2 in his division. LSU also has a serious QB problem.

Les Miles has never had this much talent and this strong of a coaching staff.

Serious problem at QB. No way. Sure, there is a ? there, but many a QB, including Matt Mauck (18-1 career record as starter and 1 National Title) stepped his game up tremendously between his 1st and 2nd seasons. LSU should have the top rushing attack in the SEC and top level defense. That combination will make Russel's job that much easier.

LSU should be ranked ahead of Oklahoma and Mich. That is not to say LSU will end up in the top 5, but a top 5 preseason ranking is clearly warranted.

I would rank Texas #1. USC has too many ??? on defense. Mack Brown is a goat, and he will probably never win a national title, but preseason they deserve #1 due to all the experience and talent they return.

Tenn will not go undefeated. @LSU, @Bama They lose one these 2 games. It is very difficult to play on the road against teams with strong running games and strong defenses. Plus, Tenn plays LSU on the heels of another tough game at the swamp, while LSU will be off of a bye week. I didn't even mention an extremely losable matchup with UGA along the way.

I played Tenn over 8.5 for the season, but I am looking at 9-2.

I can't see Texas as #1 because I will be very surprised if they beat Ohio State in Columbus. By the way, what is the officiating for that game? When Washington State played Ohio State a few years back, our receivers got mugged all over the place.

Then, there is Oklahoma. I think people are taking far too much from the Rose Bowl.

I also think Michigan is rated too high. ...I like Florida. They have a QB who can win any game, any place. Meyer should be a big upgrade and they always have talent.

IF LSU's QB play is much improved, they will be very, very tough. Saying that, the times I saw them, they looked very mediocre on Offense.

Quote from Mel Kiper:

"USC would be more vulnerable if their schedule was difficult."

Pat Forde: Q. Why do you think the Pac-10 has the reputation of being soft...is it east coast bias?

A. Not necessarily a bias. I think there is some legitimacy to the fact the Pac 10 is not very deep...last year they had 2 really good teams in USC and Cal and then a big dropoff.

Over and Under in hours on how long it takes Scott to blast Kiper and Forde ( my guess under 4 hours), but I really agree with Forde that the Pac 10 was top heavy with two solid teams even though you would have to question Cal after the Texas Tech debacle. Im not sure on Kiper's comment since it's sort of next to impossible to project just how difficult a teams schedule will be until the games begin

The trojans will get a blemish on their schedule this season,it will be from the sun devils on 10/1/05.

We all know the Trojans will score big this season, but they will also get scored on.

The trojans returning only 5 players on the defensive side of the ball this season and that will be a problem.

They won 4 games by 8 points or less last season.

This is not the same defense that lead the country in turnover ratio.

QB Sam Keller will shoot it out with Leinart that saturday, and the Trojans will get upset in Tempe on 10/01/05. :)
