The list I provided was total offense. Combines rushing & passing yards. Source was usatoday statistics. As you can see, AU has not faced great offensive teams.

I think you misread my post. I never said AU had a bad or average defense. I think AU has a great defense but NO WAY do I think AU has the BEST DEFENSE in the country. The reason I think that is they have not been tested by a great offensive team. UGA was the best offense AU has faced and for the most part, AU opponents had very few great offensive attacks. That is why I showed the list to back up my argument!

AU "may" have the best defense, I know they have a very good defense, and I know AU has passed the test all year on defense. Still does not change the fact they have not been tested! If AU defense shuts down USC, OU, or CAL offense, then I know they are for real and prob. the best defense in the country.

And I'd still like to hear a response on why Oregon St. should be ranked in the Top 25.

Read my first post in this thread, it is highlighted in bold. That should answer your question!

medlisg

I also would like you to show me a better defense than AU! I don't think your darling trojans could run the ball against the TIGERS defense and they would have trouble in the air. USC has not faced a Defense like AU's.

How can you say you know USC couldn't run against Auburn? AU has not faced an offense as good or talented as USC all year. AU has not faced a QB as good as Leinart all year. AU has not faced a RB like Bush all year. AU has not faced an offensive coordinator as good as Norm Chow all year? If AU played OU or CAL and stopped them, then you could argue AU has a good prob. of stopping USC. The best offense AU faced and stopped was UGA and I personally do not think highly of their offense. They are not that great and def. not in the caliber of USC, OU, or CAL.

FYI, AU does not have great DB's. I do not think USC would have much trouble passing against AU. Again, AU has not stopped an offense close to as good as USC, so how do you know?

USC has faced some solid defenses. Not saying these defenses are better or worse, but they are damn good. V-Tech, CAL, Oregon St., and ND aint too shabby. As for the USC defense, they have faced some great offenses this year and passed the test every week. CAL, Oregon St., Arizona St., V-Tech, and UCLA is extremely talented on offense. So they will have been very tested and tested often. UGA would be the only offense that AU has faced that would put in this category of teams. I think everyone can agree to that.

EVERYONE can stop looking stupid and stop the BS stats that CAL put up against USC. That was the freaking gameplan. USC held the #1 offensive team in the country to 17pts. IF you watched the game, USC's gameplan was to give up EVERYTHING UNDERNEATH and make Cal march down the field. Despite CAL QB Rogers being virtually perfect for the day, CAL only scored 17pts. Carroll knows it is difficult for college offenses to march down the field. Takes extreme discipline AND QB being on target. People need to become educated on this. If CAL scored 30+pts then I would say Carroll's strategy didn't work.

Also, I would like to remind you that USC is only at the top of the polls because they started there. Had they even started 10th with AU in 18th USC would not be on top today!

Preseason Polls are a rip-off!!

Why do you think USC has not earned their spot at #1? They are undefeated and played the #9 strength of schedule in the country. USC was co-national champs last year and they have earned their spot at #1. NOBODY has made an argument for why USC should not be #1. If you really believe that, please show me your argument!

That all said, if I was in charge, I would start the poll 4 weeks after the first weekend of college football. Most teams should have played 3-4 games. If that was the case, USC would be ranked #1. USC had the hardest OOC schedule and beating V-Tech @V-Tech is an extremely tough thing to do to open the season. BTW, V-Tech is #11 in the polls and might win the ACC. I remember after USC beat V-Tech everyone thought V-Tech would be lucky to finish #6 in the ACC. I also remember people poking fun of USC schedule before the season started. Funny how things turned out. :)

scott4usc......you might be the most biased fan of any team i have ever met....the thing that confuses me the most about you is the i know you think reggie bush is a better running back then carnell williams......reggie bush is a situational sub and not even the best running back on his team....lendale white is a running back....reggie bush is more of a receiver than anything else and they use him in match-up situations in the passing game....HE IS ONE IF NOT THE MOST ELECTRIFYING PLAYER IN COLLEGE....probably the best punt returner in the college game as well, but he is not an every down back by any means........he is similar to lorenzo booker at FSU....i thought that he was going to be great because he had even more accolades then bush coming out of high school, but he is a situational sub.....as for carnell.....he is the best running back in the country bar none.....he is the focal point of every defense and he still produces, and has done so for 4 years.....he is the hardest player to tackle in the game and runs with more passion than anyone......he will be a great nfl back, and will his BACKUP; ronnie brown.....i can't wait to hear some more biased bs....

Scott,

You obviously didn't read all my post. Oregon St. (6-5).....0-5 vs. top 25 teams this season. They beat one team with a winning record. Yes, ONE. Top 25 material, give me a break. If you are 0-5 against top 25 teams then that means you do not belong in the top 25.

FYI.......Auburn does have great DBs.....Carlos Rogers is a finalist for the Thorpe Award (top db in the country). But that is probably east coast bias right??? Montae Pitts is a great athlete (6'2" 205 pounds). He has done his job all season.

Your replies always talk about how great USC is and how no one else is as good as the trojans. Give me a break.

What is your top 10?????

1. Southern Cal
2. Southern Cal's second string
3. Cal
4. Arizona St.
5. Oregon St. (all their losses are to top 25 teams)
6. Stanford ( they played southern cal close)
7. Oklahoma
8. Auburn
9. .........
10 ..........

that sounds about right, huh???

I agree C. Williams is a better pure "running back" than Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush is the better "player." Lendale White is my favorite player on the USC team and obviously my favorite running back at USC. He is awesome. So is C. Williams and R. Brown. I take USC duo because they are more versatile but you can't go wrong with either. AU has the better pair of pure "running backs" but USC has better players in the backfield. Lendale White would rush for 100-200 yards a game easy if he was the feature back. The guy is awesome. Instead, USC uses rotation in the backfield which prob. plays out better in the long run. If I had my wish, I would like USC to move Bush to WR and use Bush at RB maybe 5x a game. Use Lendale as the feature back and give him 25-30 carries a game. He seriously would rush for 200 yards a game. He currently averages over 5ypc but so does Reggie Bush and so does USC 3rd string RB Reed.

*remember USC's running backs are only sophomores. 3rd string is a redshirt freshman as well.

oldschoolcapper

I did not bring up USC. USC was not my focus in the original post. You and/or others brought up USC and I answered the questions.

AU does have good/maybe average DB's but I do not think they are great. They have not been seriously challenged by a great offense. They also have not been challenged on a consistent basis this year. I have shown that and backed up my opinion. BTW, I forgot AU does have that one really good DB. Thanks for correcting me. He is good. Played well against UGA.

I said I would ranke Oregon St. and North Carolina #24 and #25 instead of Bowling Green & Utep. I would reward both clubs for playing difficult schedule and "only" losing to top 25 opponents. BG and Utep both have 2 losses and both played #133 and #92 ranked SOS's. PATHETIC!

What is your top 10? Seriously would like to know.

My top 10 is the Pac 10 of course! :142lmao:

Scott,

Have you watched Auburn play at all this entire season? I say this because you seem to think that Ronnie Brown is not a versatile back.
I know you love stats, so I will give you some.

Let's compare RBs.

Southern Cal
White --859 yds rushing 5.4/carry
Bush --604 yds rushing 5.3/carry

White would rush for 200/game if he got 25-30 carries? try 37 carries a game. but i don't think he could do that all season even in the pac-10.

Auburn
Williams--1004 yds rushing 5.0/ carry
Brown--795 yds rushing 6.5/ carry

Receiving---Bush excels here, right? think again

Bush--34 catches 336 yds --9.9/catch
White--9 catches 84 yds --9.3/catch

Brown--28 catches 258 yds--9.2/catch
Williams--17 catches 147 yds--8.6/catch

Kickoff and Punt returns--really only a slight difference

Bush
17 Kick returns 27.2 avg.
21 punt returns 16.7 avg

Williams
5 kick returns 21.6 avg.
18 punt returns 12.8 avg

You can't argue with those stats. It is dead even. Any of the four can score from anywhere on the field. But don't give me this "southern cal has better players in the backfield" crap. The stats speak for themselves, right?

And I think Carlos Rogers being one of twelve finalists for the Thorpe Award speaks for itself. Georgia was not his only game where he played "pretty well". He's been doing it for the past 4 years. Freshman All-American, two-time first-team SEC, and either
first or second-team All-American this year.

Also, when did Cal become the #1 offense in the country?

#1 scoring--Boise / rushing--Rice / passing--Texas Tech / total--Lousiville

What are they #1 in?

My top 10 (make it 8)

1. Auburn
2. Southern Cal
3. Oklahoma
4. Louisville
5. Cal
6. Georgia
7. Texas
8. Miami

9 and 10--take your pick between
Utah, Va. Tech, LSU, and Boise.

Who do you think it should be?

just my 2 cents. hope you enjoy!

Good stats but there is one problem. AU RB's put those stats up against easier competition. USC has played the #9 SOS in the country vs AU playing the #74 SOS. Doesn't really matter a whole lot. I agree the AU RB's are awesome. However, I think USC has a better tandom because they are more versatile and both bring a completely different game. IMO, Carnell and Brown are a lot more similar vs Bush and White being completely different. Both set of RB's are awesome, it just depends what you prefer. I can tell you this. It is a lot harder to defend Bush & White vs defending Williams & Brown. Bush being the primary reason.
That is why I choose the USC tandom over the AU tandom.

When USC played CAL, they were the #1 offensive team in the country and I currently think CAL is the best offensive team in the country. Plus they put up their #'s playing a #12 ranked SOS. II think QB Rogers is the #1 QB in the country and Tedford is a top 5 offensive minded HC in the country. Also remember CAL has 2 great RB"s and Arrington has put up numbers on par with OU's RB Adrian Peterson, or Arringtons #'s might even be BETTER! Arrington is a STUD!

Your Top 8

1. Auburn
2. Southern Cal
3. Oklahoma
4. Louisville
5. Cal
6. Georgia
7. Texas
8. Miami

My Top 10

#1 USC
#2 OU
#3 AU
#4 CAL
#5 Utah
#6 Texas
#7 Arizona St.
#8 Miami
#9 Louisville
#10 Boise St.

How could you put Miami in the top 10 and not ASU? Miami is 8-2 with #16 SOS while ASU is 8-2 with a #2 SOS. ASU only 2 losses were against @#1 USC and #4 CAL. ASU didn't even make your top 10. Yet you are impressed with more 2 loss teams who have played a worse SOS. For example Georgia, Miami, V-Tech, and LSU. Doesn't make sense if you ask me. I always side with the teams who played a tougher SOS 95% of the time. You don't even have ASU in your radar!

That my friend is a classic example of EAST COAST BIAS!

What the f*** has LSU done to be considered in your top 10? OMG! Gotta hear this one.

What the polls are doing to ASU and even CAL is horrible and CLASSIC example of EAST COAST BIAS. CAL lost half of their votes despite blowing out Stanford while Texas was idle. How does an idle Texas make up half the pts against CAL when CAL blew out Stanford? The ****ing Big 12 and SEC if F***ing with the polls and trying to hurt USC. ASU being ranked #20 is a complete joke. USC is the only freaking school on the west coast that gets national respect. That is not right. The kicker is these other west coast teams have played tougher schedules and get penalized for it DESPITE having same records. Then on top of that, LOSE pts to a team that was idle. Complete BS!

Here is the funny thing. Big 12 wants to hurt CAL's BCS ranking to boost OU's BCS ranking AND get Texas a BCS berth. That is BS. They also want to hurt ASU and not give USC an even stronger SOS. Now AU should be pissed over this, but then SEC is prob. in on this too. SEe they need USC to falll to #3 in the computer polls so AU can take #2 and have a chance to beat out OU for #2 in the BCS. THIS IS WRONG and there is absolutely NO ARGUMENT for why CAL loses half their pts to idle Texas after blowing out Stanford. Then there is NO ARGUMENT for ASU to be ranked #20. That is a crying shame.

BUNCH OF CROOKS! Feel real bad for CAL and especially ASU fans.

scott,

i have the strength of schedule as follows
rich tellshow's sos
OU #16
Southern Cal #21
Auburn #33

not much difference is it?

They have all gone 3-0 against top 25 teams. How can you say that if a team beats #10 and #90, that they have faced the same competition as one who beats #49 and #51. That is what the SOS does. It treats those as being equal. Give me a break.

So Cal is still #1 offensively because they were #1 when Southern Cal played them.

If that's how it works......Auburn beat #4 LSU, #7 Tennessee, and #6 Georgia. WOW!

How could my top 10 (my very own opinion) be wrong?

Miami is there because they lost in OT to Clemson and on last-second FG to UNC. They also beat Louisville, FSU, and Virginia.

LSU is there b/c they've lost AT Auburn (10-9) and AT Georgia (blowout). That is enough of a reason for me to have them in there.

Arizona State is not there because they got creamed 45-7 and 27-0 against So. Cal and Cal. NO team deserves to be in the top 10 if they get beat that bad twice.

I'm tired of hearing all this whining about ASU and Cal. I have no sympathy for them or their fans. What a crock. I'm pulling for A&M to beat Texas and hoping Boise can slip in BCS as well. This would be enough to make the powers that be change the whole system.

BTW, do you like the current system, or would you like to see some type of playoff or extra game in the end?

You quoted rich tellshow's sos. Why? This is how he calculates his SOS.

"The SOS is a weighted average of 2/3 the winning percentage of a team's opponents and 1/3 the winning percentage of the opponent's opponents."

He does not have a ratings index. All he cares about wins/losses and I think that is flawed. He also does not factor in home/away games. That is another flaw. Here is an example to prove my point.

tellshow would consider this one of the toughest SOS in the country. NONE of these teams are super talented. Majority have proven very little against tough competition. Yet this would be one of the strongest SOS in the country according to tellshow.

Navy
Toledo
Northern Illinois

Bowling Green
North Texas
Boston College

UAB
UTEP
West Virginia

Akron
Troy St
Memphis

I'm tired of hearing all this whining about ASU and Cal. I have no sympathy for them or their fans. What a crock. I'm pulling for A&M to beat Texas and hoping Boise can slip in BCS as well. This would be enough to make the powers that be change the whole system.

How about Georgia gaining pts while idle and after getting blown out by AU. Does that make sense? Is that fair? EAST COAST BIAS! Big 12 and SEC are secretly trying to get more teams in the BCS and get more $$$ for their conf. It is BULL$hit and nobody is talking about it. Clear as night and day.

BTW, do you like the current system, or would you like to see some type of playoff or extra game in the end?

Current system is ok but if I had a choice, I would want an 8 team playoff. Let the 6 computers determine the top 5 conf. The conf. winners of those 5 conf. get an auotmatic playoffl bid. Then let the BCS select the next 3 playoff teams. This would put a prem. on conf. games and winning your conf. If you lose an OOC game your season is not over. This also would put a prem. on scheduling tough OOC competition as it might put you over the top to get selected by the BCS for the final 3 BCS positions. Conf. will also cheer each other on during OOC play to increase their conf. rating so they get an automatic playoff berth. This would be best for college football and any mid major team who goes undefeated and plays a reasonable SOS should get selected in the final 3 BCS slots. If not, too bad. Schedule tougher OOC competition and get the polls to rank you higher.

Then let the BCS rank the teams 1-8, and have 1vs8, 2vs7, 3vs6, 4vs5

So Cal
The sec is on a down year.
AU going undefeated is not that big a deal.
IMO the big 12 is way stronger then the sec this year.

AU only had 4 road games this year all against very mediocre teams at best. Ole Miss, Alabama , Tennessee, and Miss St.
also they didn't play a back-to-back road game this year.

AU had the ref in the pocket vs LSU .Gimme a break they let him re-kick the PAT after a GHOST call to win 10-9...whatta joke.

What I would love to see more then anything is AU to play either USC , OU , Cal , Utah ,or Louisville.
then everyone will see that a team with a explosive off.
could easily make AU def. look bad.
IMO anyone of the teams listed above will beat AU by 7+

USC deserves to be #1 as doe's OU#2 AU#3
If USC goe's unbeaten(and they should) I would consider that just as impressive as AU going unbeaten.

Hopefully will see USC vs OU in the Orangebowl .
Trust me it will be far more entertaining then USC or OU vs AU
I would lay as many as 7-10 points with USC , OU ,or even Cal vs AU. IMO all those teams have better Athletes , Off.,Def.,ST and coaching staff.

When any team plays USC they play them much harder then they would any other opp.Everybody wants to take down the champs
so a few close calls are to be expected.

Also if the season ended today , who would AU play?

A down year in the SEC is stil a tougher task than an up year in the PAC.

Your post is dumbest thing I've read!

but IMO they would fall short to a Xplosive team.

ok i will respond.

all your points can be validated??

first, any 1-A team going undefeated is a big deal. last sec team to do it......1998 Tennessee National Champs......it has also been maybe 20 years since a Pac-10 team has done that.

that is a very big accomplishment for both AU and SC!

ref in the pocket?? it is a rule....they committed the penalty....what more do you want???that's like saying if they hadnt ruled that a fumble...or if they hadn't called holding...my team would have won....it's part of the game. in addition, that would the game would have been tied and most likely gone to OT, so it would not necessarily have meant a loss would it?

also, usc, cal, ou, utah, and louisville would beat AU by more than a touchdown???????haha that is ignorant. but the most ignorant comment is that the athletes, coaching staff, etc. is better at those schools. how exactly did AU get to this point then?? has it been luck that they only give up 9 points a game and half the points they given up this season were against their 2nd string defense????

Scott,

Perhaps you can understand now why the polls are doing what they are to Arizona St. Losing to a 2-8 Arizona should explain a lot. Stoops is a good coach and give him time to recruit and Arizona will have potential in a few years, but they are miserable team at this point.

Perhaps your #7 ranking of ASU is a bit too high? Or should Arizona be ranked in the top 10 too?

Arizona State doesn't belong anywhere near the Top 10, but Cal is very, very good. Though they lost USC, for the most part they were the better team on the field that day. Judging from that game, I wouldn't be surprised if Cal would beat them on a neutral field.

hoops,

i think you misunderstood my post. read the page before and look at scott's comments knocking my top 10 for not having Az. State anywhere near the top 10.

cal beat az. state 27-0 and az. state is the best team that cal has beaten this year. i think everyone should take a good look at cal v. southern miss, because most people on here are going to want to jump on cal against southern miss next weekend, but if southern miss doesn't have too many injuries going into the game they will keep it very close.

everyone who is touting the pac 10 as a power conference should take a step back and look at the competition.

agree with hoops.

arizona state as a top 10 team is laughable.

but cal is very very good. cant take that away from them

but no, top to bottom the pac10 is not a power conference this year, especially since oregon is way down this season./
