Not sure where to start...lets see....about 6 weeks ago my daughter asked me if I would be interested in coaching my grand daughter in a 4-5 yr old YMCA basketball league...here in Austin...I know in NY we don't start basketball leagues until at least 2nd or 3rd grade.. my daughter said she will be my asst coach...so I took her up on it...my grand daughter having those Texas genes is in the 110 % in height...has big feet and huge hands just like her mother who is 6'2....who was a good basketball player....letters were sent out by the YMCA with rules, schedules and rosters...to all the parents

1st game was last saturday...10.00am....we have 10 players but 8 showed up...before we left for the gym my daughter said that "maybe we should bring snacks"...I responded" snacks, what for" I coached all four of my kids in little league, soccer league and basketball league...coached two of you in AAU basketball leagues for about 10 years and played in about 9 or 10 states every freak'in weekend. Coached my own HS team for 23 years...snacks,never heard of it......there are water fountains in the gym where we are playing...no snacks...My daughter said its kind of an Austin thing where one parent at the end of games brings snacks..we did that during M's[ my grand daughter} soccer season....I said this is basketball....its indoors....

So we pull up to the Middle School where were playing and the parking lot is packed...3 gyms..the 9.00 o'clock games are ending and the 10's are arriving...my wife in the back seat says" box, look at all the people with trays of food being brought in...I realize its freak'in snacks for all the teams...you see the other coaches sent e-mails out to their teams with a snack schedule..my daughter and wife look at me with disdain..we are still in the parking lot and I'm getting the " we told you so"...
I say..."my bad...you guys were right"...I can suck it up because I was 100% wrong...in Austin everyone brings snacks. I will explain it to the parents...

We get into the gym and my daughter told all the parents in her e-mail that "to look for a man with a Green hat that says North Texas...and I am very tall"...most of the parents went to the tallest girl in the gym and found our team...the one problem was my daughter never told me to wear my North Texas hat.. I was wearing my red Phillies hat.....but we got organized and my daughter put every ones name in a notebook..we met the parents and exchanged phone numbers.....etc

I got the 8 kids and lined them up...we did a catching and passing drill.. I had 4 basketballs and the kids were having fun..we practiced a few shots and then the ref came over and said the game starts in 10 minutes..I said " a game"...can we practice a little more...other then my grand daughter these kids have no idea what there doing..the ref said " either does the other team"...
We play 4 on 4...I am trying to get there names to set up.....2 of my girls have long hair down to there shoulders...A boy named Hymie refuses to come out on the court...he is holding his mothers legs....another boy and his parents come up to me..they are both hearing impaired and so is there son...the parents tell me "he can read lips"....I thank them....another boy is wearing glasses w/o a band.. I ask his mom if its ok and she says I think so....

the game starts and there are no rules about dribbling...you can run with the ball,etc...I was really directing traffic out there with my daughter but having fun...after about 10 minutes its time to sub...my wife sitting in the stands signals to my daughter to tell dad...."those two kids with long hair are boys not girls..dad keeps calling them girls"......holy shit.....I don't mind long hair but the parents should of warned me or told me...there is no way any one would of known so I don't feel bad......and both have names that could pass for boy or girl..jamie...frankie....we play about 30 minutes...the only time I'm yelling hard is to my grand daughter....and she looks at me with an attitude....
Game is over, parents are thanking me and my daughter Then Hymies mother who never left his mother's womb throughout the game has snacks...she brought them..a juicy-juice and a granola bar....she saved the day.....

We are walking out my car and my grand daughter says "grandpa,I didn't have to much fun today"....and then my daughter reminds me " Dad,next week your on your own,its Martin Luther King on Monday.. don't forget I'm flying to Philly for a 4 day weekend......No problem...its only the 2nd week..only 8 more staurdays left...by the way,honey..who the F...is bring snacks next week" Then my wise ass daughter says" I guess you couldn't run the flex dad today.:mj07:
J
But as my car pulls out,Hymies mother approaches my car....I again thank her for bringing the snacks and she assures me" hymie will be there next week and he will play...I say that is great..see you next saturday...... just another day coaching at the "Y"..

The snack thing had me wondering :wtf: too at first when my kids were playing sports. If you ask kids what they liked best about basketball, soccer, or whatever, a lot of them say the snacks. :mj07: It's like a kid can't even ride a bike around the block without having a water bottle anymore  I would have loved to have had some snacks when I played :mj07: Hell, I would have even settled for a water fountain with a stream that rose above the outflow area so I didn't have to mouth it and suck in the guy's spit who used it before me!

OK
Reminds me of my T-Ball days when I got set up with the younger team that the other teams thought we could not win, except I got the twin brothers, one of which when on to play college ball and we won every game. They could not change the rules fast enough to keep us from winning.

Been coaching at the Y for years.
We have our first game this weekend. They do not keep score in first game but of course the kids will know the score.
Everyone plays half the game whether they come to practice or not.
I have two kids who have never played the game .
I have one kid who shot from the free throw line in a scrimmage and the ball went over the basket.
My goal each year is to try and make sure every kid makes a basket during the year. May not happen this year.
Good luck teaching your kids the flex offense!

Thanks's for all the responses...they were funny...I think we are playing a good team next week...I saw a girl with long hair shooting jumpers on the court next to us...pretty sure we are playing that team...I might just throw a "box and one" on her but....not sure if she is a girl or boy...problem is teaching these kids a "box and one" would confuse them...they will all think the next snack is coming from "Jack in the Box".:mj07:
Was thinking about a 1-3-1 zone defense but we only start 4 players...maybe a 1-3.....

Having fun though esp. when you leave the gym and its 70 degrees outside....My main goal is just having them catching and dribbling the ball....the rims are 7'0 feet high...in another yr my grand daughter will be dunking....the entire team comes up to her belly button, Hymie comes up to her knee's...will update on next saturdays big game...and Hymie will play..and think I forgot to say this...Hymie speaks no english...how did I forget that....and my team name....I forgot that part too....every team has to have a NBA or college name....every one in Austin are Spurs fans.. So I said the Spurs. The director laughed at me and said that was already taken....during the 1st day in sign ups...so I said the Knicks....so we are the Knicks....a grandfather coach,2 hippie boys{ mean no disrespect since my hair was kinda long in college}one seeing impaired, one hearing impaired , a player who has yet to leave his mothers hold who speaks " nada " english and a grand daughter who says " I don't know if I'm having fun".....jump ball 11.00 am sat...
