YTD Record: 60-58 for -3.25 units

Starting off with:

St. John's -125 (vs. ECU) for 1.5 units - Pirates were knocked for getting a 2 seed and I think it shows here. Johnies are throwing their big K guy Hansen (100 K's in 86.1 IP). Though ECU is less hack heavy than they have been in prior years, I think he will fare real well today.

Back with some others later.

Adding:

College of Charleston +155 (vs. GaTech) for ? unit ? Tech not going with their best pitcher and the Cougars are.

UCF +120 (vs. MO St.) for ? unit ? Bears have grabbed quite a bit of pub as one of the mid-majors to watch out for and it is rightfully so as they lead the nation in ERA and have some flame-throwers as starters. That ERA is built around their starters as their bullpen isn?t very deep. If any of their starters get in trouble it is going to be tough for them to come from behind and win in my opinion. Also, their offense and defense is a liability. There is a reason they went 13-7 in the 8th best conference despite their edge in starting pitching. UCF is talented and not exceptional at any one facet but solid throughout. I like them to get through the winner?s bracket and face Miami or MO State in the regional final.

RAINY DAY
Morning rain soaked the Miami area and forced practices at Alex Rodriguez Park to be canceled Thursday. All four teams hit for an hour at a nearby indoor training facility which, from the exterior, looked like an old warehouse.

It was quite nice inside with memorabilia hanging on the walls from ex-Miami all-Americans Alex Rodriguez and John Jay, among others.

There?s an 80 percent chance of rain today, according to the National Weather Service.

KNIGHTS AIM HIGH
Central Florida, in a regional for the second straight year, is expecting a deep run after being eliminated in last year?s regional at Florida State.

?It starts now and there?s no more losing,? said first baseman D.J. Hicks, the team?s top power hitter with 11 home runs and 68 RBIs.

?We?ve put ourselves (in position) to make a run in the postseason and now our only goal is to get to Omaha,? shortstop Darnell Sweeney said. ?Five wins - that?s all we?re looking for and then we?re there in Omaha.?

Some would consider the Knights the regional favorite. They?re ranked 20th by Baseball America, with top seed Miami No. 24.

RELAXED BEARS

First baseman Brock Chaffin said the Bears are relaxed after fulfilling their goal of reaching postseason play.

?But like every other team, there?s one ultimate goal and that?s not just to reach regionals,? Chaffin said, referring to the College World Series. ?We have our sights set a little higher than just on the Miami regional. But I think everybody is gonna come out a little more relaxed.

?You win or go home. We all have the mindset that we?re not ready to go home at this point.?

IN DEEP
According to the Ratings Percentage Index, this is the toughest of the 16 regionals. With Miami (12), Central Florida (22), MSU (35) and Stony Brook (86) the average RPI is 38.75 ? best of all. The foursome at the Florida State region ? Mississippi State, Samford, Florida State and UAB ? averages 43.

MVC pitching helped prepare Sycamores for regional

Nick Petree, Pierce Johnson, Ty Blach.

These aren?t just elite-level starting pitchers Indiana State?s baseball team faced this season. They comprise three of the last five pitchers the Sycamores faced period.

The Oregon Regional that ISU will be participating in starting today at Oregon?s PK Park embodies all that is college baseball in 2012. When the bats were neutered prior to the 2011 season, college baseball went from a power-oriented game to one predicated on pitching and small-ball offensive tactics at warp speed.

Austin Peay is the only team that doesn?t bring a strong three-man staff to Eugene and it?s the only team that doesn?t rely on moving runners via bunting, hit-and-runs and base stealing.

But the pitching is there in abundance. All three of Cal State Fullerton?s starters have earned-run averages under 4.00 and the team has an ERA of 3.09. Oregon also has three starters under 4.00 and has a team ERA of 3.02. ISU takes a back seat to no one as it has a team ERA of 3.18 and it has four starters with ERAs under 4.00.

Often times, a team like ISU can be overwhelmed by the pitching it sees at a regional. The Missouri Valley Conference?s pitching had ebbed and flowed in recent years.

But in 2012, the MVC?s pitching took a back seat to few leagues. The league?s overall ERA was 3.80. It?s just barely shy of the Pac 12?s 3.77 ERA ? where Oregon plays. It?s better than the Big West Conference?s 4.00 ERA ? home of Fullerton. It crushes the Ohio Valley Conference?s 5.63 ERA ? where Austin Peay plies its trade.

Fullerton coach Rick Vanderhook pleaded ignorance of the Sycamores when interviewed Thursday, but he knew all about the MVC?s pitching.

?Looking at Indiana State, I don?t know much about them and they don?t know much about us. But I heard about those Missouri State pitchers two weeks into the season. Someone told me that Missouri State has some dudes on the bump. And I?ve heard of the Creighton guy. They faced some good pitching,? Vanderhook said.

None of the Valley teams had a weak Friday starter this season, the first time that?s been the case for many years in the MVC. Petree was so electric that he was named the Louisville Slugger Player of the Year on Thursday.

ISU hit Petree hard when the Bears came to Terre Haute two weeks ago. ISU didn?t hit every MVC starter it faced, but it them as well as most teams did. It should serve the Sycamores well in Eugene this weekend.

?The pitching we saw in the last 10 days of the season is better than what we?re going to see in this regional, I really believe that. Not that we?re not going to see great arms, we are. We saw Petree, we saw Blach. I?m excited. As a coach, you want your team to have seen that,? ISU coach Rick Heller said.

ISU catcher Jeremy Lucas, who hit .361 in MVC games this season, said it wasn?t just the quality of pitching ISU faced, but the variety. Petree throws off-speed stuff from odd angles and multiple release points. Johnson is a fireballer par excellence. So was Blach.

?I feel like we faced every kind of pitcher college baseball has to offer. We faced the hard arms, the good arms, anything anyone has to offer. I feel confident that anyone on our team is going to be able to match up well,? Lucas said.

ISU?s battle-hardened lineup gives Heller a chance to preach an important lesson learned in his previous NCAA regional appearance.

Heller coached Northern Iowa to the NCAA Tournament in 2001. It was the Panthers? only Division I appearance in the playoffs and it showed.

?We had some guys who didn?t play their best because they played the uniform and not the game. I?ve never stopped thinking about that,? Heller said. ?It sits in my stomach today. Had they believed, we could have won that thing. I told the guys, ?We can win this.? If you believe, you can beat anyone.?

Adding:

Vandy -220 (vs. UNC-Wilmington) for 1 unit ? Vandy throwing their best pitcher and should easily move on.

Zona -2.5 -120 (vs. Mizzou) for 1 unit ? Tigers hot run is over I?m afraid. Zona throwing Heyer and he should be able to handle their bats quite easily. Wildcats have one of the potent offenses in the whole field.

Ville -170 (vs. N. Mexico St.) for 1 unit ? Cardinals have strength?s across the board in batting, starting pitch and bullpen.

Oregon St. -2.5 +120 (vs. Belmont) for 1 unit ? Beavers? bats are hot while Belmont doesn?t do much offensively. Oregon St. hasn?t named a starter but one of their top 2 will go and both are quality.

some other Regional info to note, from stitchhead's Collegebaseballtoday blog:

Two injury situations to keep an eye on. South Carolina catcher Grayson Greiner has already been ruled out for the weekend after suffering a meniscus tear to his left knee. Keep in mind, their first game will be against Manhattan, a team which stole 81 bases on the season (32 of them from Anthony Vega). Also, Miami stud catcher Peter O?Brien, who has been the lynch pin for the Hurricanes offense this year, is battling through a sore wrist which has hampered his swing in practice this week. That?s a pretty significant development, considering the Canes will play hungry-like-the-Seawolves Stony Brook in game one.

My nephew is a freshman 2nd baseman on the Missouri baseball team. An unreal run through the big 12 tourney got them to this point.
My brother has seen many of their games this season and doesn't think they win a game in the tourney. I can't pull the trigger on Arizona, though...
But the over 11.5 -160 might just get some of my action....:0074

rrc - I'm jealous of that afternoon(evening) game you saw. Curious if you are going to be a trooper to stick out the next one.

reds - I also feel Mizzou kind of spent all their energy and good fortune in that tourney run. In a regional with some good offensive clubs, I just don't see them fairing well. And actually going to go against you on that total. Just think Zona's #1 really holds down the Tigers bats.

Adding:

Zona/Mizzou Under 11.5 +120 for 1 unit
Valpo/Purdue Under 8.5 +120 for 1 unit

shouldn't have played those totals late. Was a positive day until that. Will tally everything up shortly.

For Saturday:

S. Carolina -1.5 +105 (vs. Clemson) for 2 units

St. John?s +2.5 -130 (@ UNC) for 1 unit

E. Carolina -2.5 -120 (vs. Cornell) for 1 unit

Dallas Baptist -2.5 -120 (vs. Oral Roberts) for 2 units - these guys looked primed to repeat their run to the Supers.

Got to the ballpark around 2:15 watched infield etc...

Walked out of the ballpark around 9:45 and thought the Big Ten Network will be just fine for the nightcap.

Even though I live in NW Indiana I'm not really a huge fan of Valpo or Purdue even having seen quite a few of those kids play their HS ball.

A person cannot help but love the Kent St. team. They are all clones, all about 5'10"...I swear other than a few pitchers, I'm not sure they had a position player that was 6 feet tall.

We were first row right by the Kent St bullpen. One of their bullpen catchers had to have caught between 200-300 pitches in the pen, he started warming guys up in the THIRD inning.

An experience that won't be forgotten.

You would have been one of the biggest basesball nuts ever to watch that nightcap.

I'm headed up to Milwaukee today so won't be online much the rest of the day. Shoot Jack or IE an email if you want to get my email. Will be down in Gary for the night game tomorrow.
