SEC basketball notebook

SEC basketball notebook

After Tuesday night's massacre at Rupp Arena, Kentucky has left no doubt -- none! -- that it is playing the best basketball in the SEC right now, if not the entire country. The Wildcats absolutely dominated top-ranked Florida in a 70-55 home win as 4 1/2-point favorites.

The key to UK's recent success? In a word -- defense. Lots of it.

This club has held its opponents to an average of 57.3 points per game in its last seven outings. The 55 points scored by Florida was its lowest scoring total of the year and was only four points more than the lowest total of Billy Donovan's tenure.

Speaking of the Gators, where was their trio of senior leaders Tuesday night? Matt Bonner, who is usually a model of consistency, pulled a complete no-show.

As a result, UF's first appearance in the top slot of the national rankings will be a brief one.

What else have we learned over the past week? Well, as reported in this space last week, Alabama is in big trouble. We pointed out similarities between this team and Pete Gillen's Virginia club last year.

However, I stopped short of saying the Crimson Tide would fail to reach the Big Dance, as the Cavaliers did last season.

But after Wednesday's events, that assesment will have to be re-evaluated. 'Bama suffered an 81-70 loss at Arkansas as a 4 1/2-point 'chalk.'

Now certainly, we shouldn't be shocked by the Tide getting beat at Bud Walton Arena, especially considering their road woes during Mark Gottfried's tenure. But let's be serious, this is the worst Arkansas team in two decades. The Razorbacks entered Wednesday's play with a terrible 6-11 record, with their only win of any significance coming over LSU at home.

This shot of 'Bama head coach Mark Gottfried says it all. (AP)
For 'Bama to lose in that spot, it now becomes official that this team is in serious danger of missing the NCAA Tournament.

Now let's take a look at Saturday's SEC matchups...

**Alabama at Florida**

--It doesn't get any easier for the Crimson Tide, who have been blanked this year in true road games. Gottfried's squad is 0-5 both straight up and against the spread on the road.

--'Bama is 13-6 SU but only 5-13 versus the number.

--Antoine "Red Shoes" Pettway scored as the horn sounded to lift the Crimson Tide past Florida last year, 65-64, as 2 1/2-point home underdogs.

--Florida (18-3 SU, 7-10 ATS) is 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS when coming off losses this season.

--The Gators have lost four in a row ATS at home. For the season, they are 3-4 ATS at the O-Dome.

======================
**Kentucky at Ole Miss**

--Kentucky (17-3 SU, 11-7 ATS) brings a 7-4 spread record on the road to Oxford.

--The 'Cats drilled the Rebels at Rupp last year, 87-64, as 13-point favorites.

--Ole Miss (12-7 SU, 6-7 ATS) has posted a 10-2 SU record at the Tad Pad to go with a 4-2 spread mark.

======================
**Georgia at Tennessee**

--UGA (13-5 SU, 9-8 ATS) survived an overtime scare against the Volunteers at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on Jan. 22. The Bulldogs outlasted Buzz Peterson's club, 81-76, but failed to cover as 13 1/2-point favorites.

--Jim Harrick's team has dropped four consecutive games against the number.

--The Dawgs own a 5-4 ATS record on the road.

--UT (12-6 SU, 10-5 ATS) still holds out chances of earning a Big Dance bid. However, a win over the Dawgs on Saturday is imperative.

--The Vols are 9-2 SU at home, 5-3 ATS.

===================
**LSU at Auburn**

--LSU (13-7 SU, 6-8 ATS) is 1-5 SU on the road and 2-4 ATS.

--The Bayou Bengals are 3-5 ATS in SEC play.

--Auburn (16-5 SU, 10-6 ATS) is 11-2 SU at home, 7-3 ATS.

--Cliff Ellis' team has covered the spread in eight of its last 11 outings.

======================
**Arkansas at Mississippi State**

--Arkansas (7-11 SU, 7-5 ATS) is off its biggest win of the year over Alabama. However, the Razorbacks are still winless outside of Bud Walton Arena.

--The Hogs are 2-2 ATS on the road.

--Mississippi State (14-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) has won four of its last five games. The Bulldogs are 3-0-2 ATS during that span.

--MSU has compiled a 4-2 spread record at home.

**South Carolina at Vanderbilt**

--South Carolina (7-11 SU, 6-11 ATS) is in the midst of an extremely disappointing season. This begs the question to Dave Odom: Are you still glad you left Josh Howard and Wake Forest?

--The Gamecocks are a pathetic 0-8 SU when they venture away from Columbia. They are 3-5 ATS on the road.

--Vandy (10-9 SU, 10-5 ATS) is off an 82-60 loss in Starkville as a 12-point 'dog.

--The Commodores are tough at home, though. In fact, Kevin Stallings' club has posted a 7-2 ATS mark at Memorial Gymnasium in Music City.
