ArchBishop Murphy - 14' Garfield (55')
Play: Under 55' for 1 unit) WIN Final: Am 37 Garfield 18 * Better to be lucky than good :0corn
*ArchBishop enters the 2017 Season coming off a perfect campaign and a State Title. The Wildcats are again ranked #1 in the state rankings in Class 2A. Last year's team was loaded and the what might be the most noteworthy of the season was 5 of the Wins of the 14-0 record were won by forfeiture..including 4 straight.... The reasoning opponents used was Wildcats were too big and had a huge roster, where the opponents couldn't afford injuries and didn't want their kids and community to be humiliated. As a former High School and College football player I couldn't believe what was taking place last year and couldn't imagine practicing for over a month without a game to play in the middle of the season... Murphy coaches lamented that some of their starting Sr players played even less as they were often pulled early when big leads were obtained..... Keeping the motivation and momentum was challenging due to the lack of live games... Still, the team won the State Championship and persevered.... Outscoring opponents by a combined 463-44 margin, of those wins each was by 34 or more points...
Murphy did lose several significant players from last seasons squad...Perhaps the biggest replacement was QB, where a Soph Victor Garbalis steps in to lead. He is young and inexperienced but Coaches think that he has a lot of tools... His primary target when he throws the ball will be to WR/CB Kyler Gordon (Sr, 5-11, 190), he's a 4 Star athlete recruit that possesses freakish speed, balance and agility (interesting note: Gordon claims his background as a dancer and ballet as big reasons why he is able to be successful) (he also dances professional for halftime of the WNBA Seattle Storm) He has 10 major scholarship offers to Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon, California, Stanford to name a few......Sr Ben Hines RB/DB (6'0" 225 lbs) was Conference Defensive MVP and the Everett Herald All-Area Defensive Player of the Year. He had over 100 tackles last year, 11 for the loss. He has Div 1 offers also...... 6'2" 300 lb Jr Center Martin Dapeaki anchors a good sized line..... Kicker Max Henderson (Jr 6'0" 185 lb) is the younger brother of last years kicker, who made all 59 PAT attempts and kicked a 50 yard field goal...LB Emmanuel Osuala is fast and brings the heat...
Garfield Bulldogs continues to improve under the 2nd year tutelage of Coach Joey Thomas who played 5 years professionally.... The team is currently ranked #6 in 3A and is coming off an 8-2 record. The team was 8-0 before being upended by 2 very good teams.... The last loss was a bounce from the Metro League Playoffs... to Lynnwood in a 63-45 shootout.... The biggest returner is (Sr 6'2" 190 lb) Tre'Shaun Harrison, who is a big play threat every time he is on the field... He is a returning TNT All-State selection as the 3A Metro Valleys Offensive Player of the Year, and in addition he is a 1st Team All-League Safety... The team has some talent and is well coached, however, there have been a couple of issues that have already blemished Coach Thomas.
The team came under scrunity last year when a former player accused Coach Thomas and the School of illegal recruiting.... The players name is RB Will Sanders... He stated that he was recruited from Texas to play in Washington by a parent that saw him playing basketball at a tournament.... The kid said Coach Thomas told him that if he came to play for him that he would receive scholarship offers... Evidently, the player lived with several family's and a Coach for most of the season... When the player returned back to Texas (with another player who was also allegedly recruited) for Thanksgiving break to see his family, he called the Coach up when he was ready to return and needed a plane ticket back... It was at this point that he says the Coach let him down and wouldn't pay for the tickets.... The player went to authorities who launched a 3rd party investigation.... The final recommendations came in June and Coach Thomas and the school and staff were exonerated..... There are theory of why this happened... In the investigation report, it was revealed that some other transfers were found to be in questionable living arrangements, however, no charges were recommended.....
Coach Thomas leadership has been in question for following the antics of Colin Kaepernick and having his team kneel for the National Anthem... This became a media circus as Garfield became somewhat famous as USA Today and Sports Illustrated as well as numerous newspapers from all over brought Garfield attention that it perhaps should have kept closer to the vest... Still, Garfield administration seems to have his back and the black community in Seattle seem to be fine with the gesture even at this level..
Garfield is a flagship school in Seattle and is often called a football power... I'm not understanding where that designation came in as the team made the playoffs in 2014 which was Garfields 1st winning season in 17 years and it's first playoff appearance since 1992.....
Both teams scheduled Bellevue this year to test their programs *Bellevue of course made its name back in 2004, when the Wolverines ended the Nation's longest winning streak (in football) as it snapped DeLaSalles vaunted 151 game winning streak (broke my heart)
Both teams have some question marks at key positions going into this tilt... Coach Thomas wanted to front load his schedule against teams that were winners and that his team would learn something from the experience.... Both Qbs are young and green and I don't think either team is going to be throwing the ball around too much.... Murphys defense should be stout and the secondary tremendous..... It's hard to tell exactly how good Garfield will be with all the distractions in the off-season and it looks like Coach has a chip on his shoulder, so only by playing can we see how it translates to the team and their motivation... I do think that the Defense can focus on the run as I don't expect ArchBishop to throw deep very often with a young signal caller......
I played a unit on the Under here, as I'm not comfortable picking a side in this one....
