HSF Degen Plays: 5-0 (+10 units)

College Football: 2-1 (+2.7 units)

---------

ArchBishop Murphy - 14' Garfield (55')

Play: Under 55' for 1 unit) WIN Final: Am 37 Garfield 18 * Better to be lucky than good :0corn
*ArchBishop enters the 2017 Season coming off a perfect campaign and a State Title. The Wildcats are again ranked #1 in the state rankings in Class 2A. Last year's team was loaded and the what might be the most noteworthy of the season was 5 of the Wins of the 14-0 record were won by forfeiture..including 4 straight.... The reasoning opponents used was Wildcats were too big and had a huge roster, where the opponents couldn't afford injuries and didn't want their kids and community to be humiliated. As a former High School and College football player I couldn't believe what was taking place last year and couldn't imagine practicing for over a month without a game to play in the middle of the season... Murphy coaches lamented that some of their starting Sr players played even less as they were often pulled early when big leads were obtained..... Keeping the motivation and momentum was challenging due to the lack of live games... Still, the team won the State Championship and persevered.... Outscoring opponents by a combined 463-44 margin, of those wins each was by 34 or more points...

Murphy did lose several significant players from last seasons squad...Perhaps the biggest replacement was QB, where a Soph Victor Garbalis steps in to lead. He is young and inexperienced but Coaches think that he has a lot of tools... His primary target when he throws the ball will be to WR/CB Kyler Gordon (Sr, 5-11, 190), he's a 4 Star athlete recruit that possesses freakish speed, balance and agility (interesting note: Gordon claims his background as a dancer and ballet as big reasons why he is able to be successful) (he also dances professional for halftime of the WNBA Seattle Storm) He has 10 major scholarship offers to Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon, California, Stanford to name a few......Sr Ben Hines RB/DB (6'0" 225 lbs) was Conference Defensive MVP and the Everett Herald All-Area Defensive Player of the Year. He had over 100 tackles last year, 11 for the loss. He has Div 1 offers also...... 6'2" 300 lb Jr Center Martin Dapeaki anchors a good sized line..... Kicker Max Henderson (Jr 6'0" 185 lb) is the younger brother of last years kicker, who made all 59 PAT attempts and kicked a 50 yard field goal...LB Emmanuel Osuala is fast and brings the heat...

Garfield Bulldogs continues to improve under the 2nd year tutelage of Coach Joey Thomas who played 5 years professionally.... The team is currently ranked #6 in 3A and is coming off an 8-2 record. The team was 8-0 before being upended by 2 very good teams.... The last loss was a bounce from the Metro League Playoffs... to Lynnwood in a 63-45 shootout.... The biggest returner is (Sr 6'2" 190 lb) Tre'Shaun Harrison, who is a big play threat every time he is on the field... He is a returning TNT All-State selection as the 3A Metro Valleys Offensive Player of the Year, and in addition he is a 1st Team All-League Safety... The team has some talent and is well coached, however, there have been a couple of issues that have already blemished Coach Thomas.

The team came under scrunity last year when a former player accused Coach Thomas and the School of illegal recruiting.... The players name is RB Will Sanders... He stated that he was recruited from Texas to play in Washington by a parent that saw him playing basketball at a tournament.... The kid said Coach Thomas told him that if he came to play for him that he would receive scholarship offers... Evidently, the player lived with several family's and a Coach for most of the season... When the player returned back to Texas (with another player who was also allegedly recruited) for Thanksgiving break to see his family, he called the Coach up when he was ready to return and needed a plane ticket back... It was at this point that he says the Coach let him down and wouldn't pay for the tickets.... The player went to authorities who launched a 3rd party investigation.... The final recommendations came in June and Coach Thomas and the school and staff were exonerated..... There are theory of why this happened... In the investigation report, it was revealed that some other transfers were found to be in questionable living arrangements, however, no charges were recommended.....

Coach Thomas leadership has been in question for following the antics of Colin Kaepernick and having his team kneel for the National Anthem... This became a media circus as Garfield became somewhat famous as USA Today and Sports Illustrated as well as numerous newspapers from all over brought Garfield attention that it perhaps should have kept closer to the vest... Still, Garfield administration seems to have his back and the black community in Seattle seem to be fine with the gesture even at this level..

Garfield is a flagship school in Seattle and is often called a football power... I'm not understanding where that designation came in as the team made the playoffs in 2014 which was Garfields 1st winning season in 17 years and it's first playoff appearance since 1992.....

Both teams scheduled Bellevue this year to test their programs *Bellevue of course made its name back in 2004, when the Wolverines ended the Nation's longest winning streak (in football) as it snapped DeLaSalles vaunted 151 game winning streak (broke my heart)

Both teams have some question marks at key positions going into this tilt... Coach Thomas wanted to front load his schedule against teams that were winners and that his team would learn something from the experience.... Both Qbs are young and green and I don't think either team is going to be throwing the ball around too much.... Murphys defense should be stout and the secondary tremendous..... It's hard to tell exactly how good Garfield will be with all the distractions in the off-season and it looks like Coach has a chip on his shoulder, so only by playing can we see how it translates to the team and their motivation... I do think that the Defense can focus on the run as I don't expect ArchBishop to throw deep very often with a young signal caller......
I played a unit on the Under here, as I'm not comfortable picking a side in this one....

College Picks 8-31:

Ohio St/Indiana Over 55".....4 units WINNER
*I realize Meyer is loaded and has something to prove after the nose dive it took in the playoffs... I also know the history doesn't support Hoosiers as last W against Buckeyes was 1988....Meyer is 38-2 in Big 10........Still, this game is in Bloomington and GameDay is there to remind that Conference Opener out of the gate gives Hoosiers some adrenaline.... Hoosiers will pin hopes on 2nd year starter that threw for 3,367 yards w/19 TDS (ahem 17 picks included).... With several returnees on both sides, I think Hoosiers will make this game interesting in the 1st half bed JT & Co pull away in the 2nd.... The number dropped a tad but I think it gets played in to the 60's.

Buffalo TT Over 13....3 units LOSS *Gophers gotta stop 6' 7" Tyree Jackson, who is true dual threat had 1,7772 yards pass and 472 rush yards.... PJ Fleck owned Buffalo when he was at WMU, but think they can get a couple of TDS here.

New Mexico St TT Over 23....4 units WIN*Aggies sucked wind ly however, they did have a competent offense that put up yards and points.... ASU had the Nation's worst D ly, so needs a ton of improvement... NMSU averaged 24.8 ppg... I was going to play the Over here but not in love with the 2 QB rotation that ASU will utilize....

Morehead St -38 over Kentucky Christian (-120)..2 units .Christian lost to Faulkner 63-8 last week.... Hmm *Win
Final MS 56 KC 14

Campbell Camels - 36 over Methodist (-120)...3 units *Campbell should roll here WIN Campbell 70 M 0

UT Martin - 33' over Clarion...(-120) 2 units..WIN UTM 36 C 0 Skyhawks rout...

Murray St -32" over Kentucky Wesleyan... (-120)...4 units..WIN MS 67 KW 7 *Racers should cruise under new lights....Average margin of victory between these two has been 51.5 points.... Closest contest was in 2015, won by 40.

Wagner - 35 over St Anselm... (-120)...2 units LOSS Final: Wag 37 Sta 7 n last year's tilt, St Anselm was tied at half 10-10....they won 38-16...dont think think they will let them hang around again as St Anselm is very inexperienced and young..

Gl...

Let's take a look at Texas... Say a prayer for all those people who were displayed... I think I heard roughly 75 hsf games canceled... Feel bad for the kids that had been working hard to play opening week and now may lose the whole season..... Obviously there are other things in this world way more important than football, however, some of these kids need the Friday Night Lights to pave the way for a scholarship... This Hurricane was complete devastation...

Idalou pk Shallowater (46').....

*Plays Idalou/Shallowater Under 46'... 2 units (-120) WIN Final SW 35 Idl 7
Play: Idalou pk over Shallowater... 1 unit (-120)
LOSS
*All eyes are on Texas for other reasons than the Hurricane... 2 match-ups will represent the great state on the National Spotlight as Shallowater travels to Idalou fobr the early game.. Perhaps the biggest problem will be how to park all the vehicles that are expected to descend on the 10, 000 seat stadium....Both programs are old school with rich history and tradition.

Shallowater Mustangs had sort of a anomaly season in 2016 going 2-9...in 2015 record was 10-3, and in 2014 13-2....New HC Bryan Wood brings a ton of experience to the position.. In 5 different schools he posted a record of 149-58....He also brings his son Koby, who is a 2 way player.... The team is fairly inexperienced as it only returns 6 on D and 4 on Offense.... Fortunately, returning Sr RB Brody Hendrick is a heavily recruited Division 1 District 1-3A All State Honorable Mention athlete.... Return QB Cutter Sparks (Jr 5-11, 178 lb) started every game for the Mustangs as a Soph..... Expectations are for a bounce back season and a return to winning ways..

Home team Wildcats were 8-4 in 2016....and beat Shallowater 17-14....in 2015 they were 13-1 and suffered only loss in the state championship 28-24 (also beat Shallowater 36-32......in 2014 Mustangs were victorious 28-17.....Last year's squad won the District Championship ly.... Coach Jeff Lofton is 37-13 at Idalou.... He returns 18 Letterman and is trying to get his program into the post-season for the 18th consecutive appearance..... He's fairly old school preaching Defense and runs I Formation / Spread Offense..... His Defense is 4-3 and limited opponents to 18 ppg ly... *Note: the team had a 6 game win streak last season and held opposition to 11 ppg while pitching 2 shut outs...... Star RB Mark Caballero (5'9, 150 lbs Sr) is small but packs a wallop. He garnered numerous awards ly and won the coveted District 2-3A, Div 2 MVP. He had 1,921 yards w/ 24 TDs... He was also Honorable Mention at Class 3A State.......Caballero is a bell cow RB and is joined in the back field with RB Xavier Rodriguez and whoever wins the QB competition between (5'11 165 lb Jr) Pierce Clary or Sr Corey Gentry... The run heavy offense returns 8 starters.... Coach Loftons philosophy is run first and try to move the clock setting up the play action homerun..... Control the clock by efficiently moving the ball utilizing the clock to his advantage......

Two storied programs take center stage and I think points are going to be at a premium.... These two always play each other close....and it should be a hard hitting game with a heavy dose of running.... Wildcats have the advantage with home field and several returning players... In last week's scrimmage, RB Caballero ran wild.... Mustangs must game plan for him or its going to be a long night.... I like the Defenses here to keep the number Under... Too.

Game #2 from Texas features two of the more successful blue bloods of Texas HSF lore...

Lake Travis - 13' Judson (58')

Lake Travis Cavaliers travel to Converse Judson Rockets... Both programs are coming off successful 2016 runs..interestingly, both programs boast 6 State Championships each...However, Lake Travis won state in 2015 while recording a 15-1 record (losing only to Judson 35-28)...in 2015 Travis was a participant in State Championship but lost to Power Katy 34-7.....in 2014 Travis went 10-2.....Judson was 13-2 in 2015 ... With 6 State Titles on the resume they haven't won one since 2004....in last year's playoffs they were eliminated by Power Westlake, Austin 24-21 in OT...

Judson Rockets coming off a 13-2 record have a lot to be excited about.... Team returns 16 starters (7 on Offense 9 on Defense)... 4 year starter QB Julon Williams has accumulated more than 7,500 total yards w/60 TDs... He is a dual threat that amassed 1,364 yards passing and ran for 820 w/26 TDs ly.... Joining the baller is returning Jr RB Sincere McCormick who had 880 yards w/11 TDs (he was a starter as a Soph and returns kickoffs too)... Senior Kicker Shane King was 7 of 9 on field goals ly.... On D, Rockets return 9 starters that held opponents to 21 ppg... Leading the charge is DE Demarvin Leal (52 tackles w/10 sacks last year) he has several offers from Power Conference as do several players from Judson.... CBs Rashad Wisdom and Chris Mills are very speedy and capable defenders....

Lake Travis was recognized as the most dominant program in Texas, which will happen when you win 6 titles in 10 years in the HSF crazed state.... Depending on what rankings you follow, Cavaliers are listed at #6 in USA Today rank, and #19 National Ranking in Maxprep Composite.... They are the 3rd ranked team in Texas, while Judson comes in at #11...This is curious since HC Hank Carters club only returns 6 starters (3 on Offense, 3 on Defense) from his team that captured the Class 6A Div 1 State Crown.... However, his programs rebuild quickly.... His teams are the only Texas program to play in back to back State Finals..... The cupboard isn't completely bare though, Jr WR Garrett Wilson had 699 yards w/12 TDs ly, he has offers from 7 Power 5 schools, and is considered one of the best wide outs in the state .. QB Matthew Baldwin (Sr 6'3" 190 lb) gets his first start but contributed as a backup ly completing 76.3% of his throws (he is the 8th consecutive QBs to pledge an FBS school.. Going to Colorado St where the Rams feel he will contribute right away as he possesses a rifle arm...... Cavs will be unveiling a whole new backfield..... Returner DE Kade Langston and DB Nathan Parodi will lead a new look D replacing 7.....Kicker Cameron Dicker made 10 of 14 field goals ly and averages 35 yards on 39 punts and is headed to Texas full ride...

Both programs have high hopes entering 2017.. Judson is facing a new high school being built in their district and many feel its now or never for the State as the school will deplete some depth of the program..... Judson has tremendous home field advantage and is 13-0 in home games over the past 2 seasons... Lake Travis reloads and just won a 7 on 7 passing tournament to boost confidence.... HC feels this team could make a deep run and Lake Travis is known as QB High as their QBs all go on to 4 year programs..... Judson returns a lot of starters to a team that upended Travis ly and in fact has had Cavs number over the last 3 years... Not sure why this line is so high except for name recognition and rank which will soon change..

Jump on the Judson train +13'...5 units (-120).. WIN Final: Judson 65 Lake Travis 45as the wrong team is favored here...... Get some!

Valor Christian - 15 Mullen, CO (62)

These two are power programs from CO.... I will defer to Hawkeye on this game if he's available.... Valor kind of got off to a slow start ly finishing 11-3, however they won the games that counted and won the State Title, in fact, the school has been to 8 consecutive title games in 5A since 2008 an incredible feat...and they are the team to beat until someone can knock them off the proverbial mountain..... In 2015, they were 12-2.... They are the #2 ranked team in Colorado... QB Dylan McCaffrey is gone to graduation but another McCaffrey steps in, Jr Luke McCaffrey will battle Sr Blake Stenstrom for the QB job... Luke is making the transition from Wide Out and CB positions.....and has already had offers from Ohio St, Michigan, Washington, Ucla, Colorado to name a few (he is of course younger brother to Christian and Dad Ed McCaffrey is Denver Bronco receiving legend).... QB Sr Blake Stenstrom (6'4 200 lbs) (Colorado commit) he is a big body and in his playing time ly he notched a 105.7 QB rating while throwing for 500 yards w/7 Tds.... He is a dual threat and runs the spread formation (His father is Steve Stenstrom, a QB that played 5 seasons in the NFL..... In last week's game against Nevada State Power Faith Lutheran, he was 12 for 22 for 128 yards... The team rushed for 232 yards and won by coming from behind in the 4th quarter...... 30-21.......The Oline returns 8 of 9 players that all contributed significantly..... The team has returners on both offense and defense and should be in the thick of things in the postseason...

Mullen had high hopes for the 2017 season.... They had a hiccup last week stumbling to Powerhouse Pomona 52-22....which was the first team to score 50 on Mullen since 2014.... Mustangs were actually ranked #4 in Colorado power rankings... Jr QB Dominic Depizzol saw valuable minutes ly. The D line is described as Men amongst Boys, however, you wouldn't know it by last week's effort... Sr DT Taye Mitchell and Sr DE Nathan Dietrich both have Div 1 offers.... On offense, RB Alonzo Moor was the one bright spot and WR A'Jon Vivens is due to repeat with big numbers... Safety Adrian Jackson is Oregon Duck bound...

I really don't have much feelings for this game... I played the Under 62 for 1unit....WINNA... Final Score: Valor Christian 34 Mullen 7 because I would expect the Mullen D to have some pride and come with a better effort.... Gluck if you play... Perhaps Hawkeye will have a feel

5Dimes doesn't mess around moving these lines.... I grabbed it at a couple of different numbers and it's the most I have wagered on a high school Game yet...Even with 6 Judson is the play... Think they win outright and they have given Travis fits... Gl

Yea 5D hs lines change fast. Like Valor in the game and the under as well. They say the youngest McCaffrey brother is the best of all 3 of them.

I had plans to travel south for this tilt which could arguably be the top 2 teams in the nation meeting in sunny CA... My buddy has a beautiful house on the beach and had already purchased several tickets for the game at Santa Ana stadium... I know I will be kicking myself but that's why we have TV.....

Mater Dei - 1' Bishop Gorman (65) * We all know what's at stake here.. Gorman shooting for #56 in a row (only following Kimberly of Wisconsin w/58)...Mater Dei wants the Mythical National Championship, something the Gaels have won 3 "mythical" National Championships straight.... In fact, Gorman has won the past 8 Nevada St Titles at 4A....The last loss was against Florida power Booker T Washington (a team that coincidentally gave STA their loss last year).... Gorman has owned CA with 12 straight wins and a 15-2 mark since 2002....Mater Dei would love nothing better than to stop the streak..

Gorman lost 10 Div 1 players to graduation, including their top QB Tate Martell and RB & Best Lineman.... Still, both programs now reload and now feature QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (Sr 6' 2" 200 lb) up until last week, he hadn't started a Varsity game, he is still the #3 rated dual threat QB in the nation.(he was actually used as a WR last year and ended up the 3rd WR with 22 catches for 397 yards w/tds..... The kid is UCLA bound....

Mater Dei QB Jr (6'0 205 lb) JT Daniel's broke numerous records last year as a Sophomore... His yards were mind numbing. He has already accepted a scholarship to USC, where a sub plot is now possible with both QBs possibly hooking horns in the So CA Rivalry..Daniel's is the #2 prospect in the class of 2019..Mater Dei is so loaded even their Veteran Coach Bruce Rollinson states he can't ever remember coaching a team with this much Division 1 talent (that's coming from a man that coached Heisman Trophy Winner Matt Leinart and 2007 National Gatorade Athlete of the year Matt Barkley) (He was voted National Coach of the year following his 28th season) ..they return 10 of 11 starters on offense... The Oline is gargantuan..... As is the D line.... The big question mark is the health of the #1WR Amon-Ra St Brown who is a game time decision as is WR CJ Parks, who didn't play against Bishop Amat last week... Monarchs won 31-7, but Daniels was only 16 of 23 passes for 179 yards w/1 td (curiosly the TD was a rush TD which he isn't really known for) Evidently, Daniels has been nursing a sore shoulder, so Coaches limited his throws..... He is expected to be 100% tonight...

Both coaches feel the game is about their squads and not about the opponent... They both demand top preparation and let the cards speak for themselves.... Should be a doozy..... Sounds like Monarchs have some dings but with that much talent..........

Played Mater Dei -1'......2 units.WIN Played Under 65 for 2 units..WIN

Good luck whatever you do

after 1Q-Valor and Mullen 7-7--McCaffery just ran 50 yards for a td as time expired in the 1st. Mullen looked like the better team in the 1st qtr.
