College OT rule is getting ridiculous.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out that a defender's legs turn to jello if they're on the field too long. The longer these OTs go, the more it looks like the offenses are running vs air.

Really, I think the NFL rule is the best. Except that they should modify it so that each team gets a minimum of one possession. ie, you can match/exceed a team's 1st possession score. After that, make it sudden death.

i think its messes with the integrity of statistics as well. qb's should not be getting credited with TD passes for essentially working a red zone drill. like you said, its damn near 7-on-7 with the way these offenses move the ball. if a game goes 3 or 4 OTs, youre talking about getting 100 yards of extra total offense that is on a short field.

funny how these teams score BEYOND the red zone almost at will, but during regular play most teams score at less than 50% from the red zone.Push it back to the 50.

They score at will because of what ctg said, these guys do not get a break so there is no time to get legs or breath, not like plaing a reg game. This has been talked about by ncaa coaches i know for a fact and i think it should be done like this.

It is the same as start of game have the coing toss get 2 time outs and play a 10 min qt and that is that, what ever happens is it at the end of 10 mins is the game if still tied then it is a tie. It gives both teams a fair shot at the ball because no one has a 10 min drive so both teams would have a fair shot.

I think this would be very fair and i think it should be like that in the nfl because their's is a joke when you can have a team not getting a shot at touching the ball.

NFL won't do it because of way games are spaced for tv time they hate it when teams go to ot or have a long game , that is why ko's for late games were moved 15 mins back. But they nfl has a lot to do with tv for some reason ncaa would not matter as much not even close to it because game times are all day. They are going to talk about this ncaa in their spring meetings. I think it would be good.

I agree with Mercury. Each team should start on the 50. Give the defenses a chance to stop the opposing offense. The offense has to go at least 20 yards to have a "chance" for a field goal.

But then again, i hate it that these OT's always get decided by the kicker. Players play their butts off and kicker loses it for them. AHEM< LIKE USC THIS YEAR LOSING ON A MISSED 39 yard field goal in 3rd OT. USC kicker lost 2 games last year and 1 game this year. What a loser. How many games did USC lose in last 2 years? 3

I also like the NFL OT rule. I would not mind that either. Maybe that could get decided on the opening toss as well. Team who wins toss can elect to hve ball in OT, and let the other team decide if they want ball 1h or 2h.

Have to disagree, I like the College OT much better than the pro's, in the NFL if you lose the toss your offense may never even get a chance.

I love the OT. Fatigue is part of the game. Maybe the stats shoudn't count but I'll take the excitement of a college OT over an NFL OT anyday.

I think the NCAA OT is great! They play these games for the fans, and I think most fans like the current OT setup. Leave it alone!

Lemme get this straight...if my memory serves me well - Arkansas has played in 3 of the longest OT's in the ncaa:

7 vs. Ole Miss '01
6 vs. Vols '02
7 vs. KY '03

The only problem i have with the OT rule is each team is already in field goal range. I think each team should have to move the ball into field goal range. Put each team at the 50. Also i think this would help prevent longer OT's and defenses will get little more rest because each team forced to move ball 50 yards.

Always hated the college OT rule. But I like the idea of moving the ball back, just a tad outside of field goal range. Sounds like a simple, but brilliant change.

As for the NFL, I like it how it is, but I could also accept both teams getting the ball at least once.

But between the two OT rules, I'd take the NFL over college any day.

Why don't they just make teams go for a two point conversion from the beginning of OT? If it's good enough for 3+, then what is any different about the first two?

I think you would see most games end in one of the first two because the defenses still have some fumes in the tank.

This would at least be a good first step. I don't necessarily dislike the current OT rule except that I think it opens up more opportunities for players to get hurt.
