Is it just me, or is college overtime a joke? I have hated it ever since it came out. Personally, I don't have a problem with ties in college. I mean, if you aren't going to have a tournament, then ties can bring more to the table, strategy wise.
BUT, if your going to have overtime, can we please play the same game??? Can we just play sudden death overtime like the NFL?

Its like they play football for 60 minutes and its an even battle. Then they change the whole game. They put each team in field goal range and let them run plays. There's no field position, no punting, etc. They might as well settle it at the bowling alley.

Notre Dame had all the momentum when the game ended. They were stuffing Mich. St. deep in their territory. Michigan State was literally saved by the bell. They were lucky to get out of it with a tie. Which is fine. Either have a coin toss and play sudden death or leave it as a tie.
But don't put the ball at the 25. Everyone thinks its fair b/c both teams get the ball, but its not fair.

I am a Notre Dame fan, but I've hated this OT set-up for years. People seem to think its exciting. Thats fine, but its not football.

For example. Lets say you have a great defense and play against a team with a great kicker. You hold that team to a 0-0 tie.
Well, all of a sudden, they are in field goal range in overtime.
Not the same game and it sucks.

I wouldn't be so upset but it pisses me off to see Miami get a win like that and for my Irish to take a loss, esp. when they were unbeaten.

(Not to mention the touchdown that was ruled a fumble).

i like college ot much better than pro football.

iprofootball should give the other team a chance to answer in case the team who has the ball first, scores.

in college i would prefer the teams start with the ball a little further out than the 25 yard line.

I am a fan of overtime because I think we need to have a winner. However I am not a fan of the format. I think each team should get the ball on the 35 yard line instead of the 25. Make the other team earn yards to increase their FG chances. Starting at the 25 is bogus. Make no yards on 3 downs and kicker still gets a 40 yard FG. How is that fair to a defense? I also think there should be a longer break between the game and OT. Not fair to a defense that might have been on field the last 5 min. of 4th quarter and then asked to get right back out there.

Another idea is maybe allow each team to start at the 30 yard line and eliminate FG's. I actually might prefer this method. They eliminate FG's after 3 OT's, why not just do it from the start.

I also think stats should not count in OT

I think I honestly just prefer the tie, at least in college.
I know we've all heard that in sudden death, the team that wins the coin toss has won about 51% of the games.
That stat doesn't mean its completely fair. If a high powered offense gets the ball first, can be tough for the other team.
I just think sudden death...at least your still playing football.

Maybe a system similar to sudden death, but you have to score at least 6 points to win.
Or, if the team that receives scores on its first possession, the other team gets the ball. But that can have a lot of problems.

I think the best would be to play one more quarter. First team to score 6 points wins and if the quarter ends w/o anyone scoring 6 points then whoever is ahead wins. That way, you can't just get the ball first, drive 40-50 yards and kick a FG to win.

The current college overtime just reminds me almost of penalty kicks in soccer. And, I hate soccer.

Scott wrong about something? Can't be.

Funny thing is you would think he would remember, since USC's last loss was in triple OT by a fg

And they eliminate PAT's after 2 OTs.

OOPS! :banghead:

Thanks for the correction. I got PAT's confused with FG's.

I still think they should eliminate FG's. It would make it more exciting too! If 1st team out doesn't score, they still have a good chance at stopping the opponent. While if you allow FGs and 1st team doesn't score, the other team will play it safe.

Format doesn't bother me, but have them start at midfield. Make it a challenge to put points on the board.

These 70-69 finals you see every once and a while are ridiculous.

Love the college OT format but think they should adopt 2 new rules:

-No FG's. TD's only.

-Start at the 35yd line.

This would even the playing field even more IMO.
The NFL overtime is unfair. I remember reading somewhere that 58% of the teams that win the coin toss go onto win in OT on their first possession.

Other reason for Shootout OT

Other reason for Shootout OT

I gotta say. I like the college football OT. I like seeing the 77-70 scores occasionally. Think back to the last time you said "did you watch the game Saturday?" and it didn't refer to a bad call or a last second missed or made field goal.

Odds are it was about an overtime game.

Odds against it being about a tie.

The only reason a tie makes since is for capping purposes only, and I truly enjoy the game too much to be selfish for that change.

I do have to admit that I would like to see the No field goals and the start at 35 yd lin implemented. Might see a little more aggressive play calling in those extra periods.

The NFL sudden death method is great for the NFL, but college students are going to make mistakes, and I believe that giving both sides of the ball a chance to win it puts the whole team in the middle of the battle instead just one side. College football is about unity and spirit for fans and players. Just like a shootout in Hockey. The college shootout overtime is not only thrilling, but when Miss St went to 7 overtimes, I was visiting my parents and I actually got my mom (65 years old) to watch football with me, and enjoy it. I don't remember who Miss St. was playing or even who won, but I remember that there was seven overtimes and my mom watched football with me for the first time. That would have never happened with a tie or a one score sudden death.
