from sportsnetwork preview:

Not only is Schilling pitching for a team win tonight, but the NL Cy Young award has to be on his mind as well.

In his last three starts, Schilling has gone 2-0 while allowing eight runs over 22 innings. On Sunday, he yielded four runs on eight

hits over eight innings in a 6-5 win against Milwaukee.

In three starts against the Rockies this season, he is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA. He last faced the Rockies on July 22 and yielded one run on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings in a 5-1 win. Lifetime, he is a dominant 10-2 with a 3.70 ERA versus Colorado.

In 15 starts on the road this season, he is 12-1 with a 2.54 ERA.

Countering for the hosts is Randy Flores, making his first career start. He has allowed eight runs in his last four outings, a span of 3 2/3 innings. He last pitched on Tuesday and threw one scoreless inning in an 11-4 loss to St. Louis

from Rooney in Rocky Mtn News:

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: Randy Flores will make his first major league start tonight when he fills in for injured Mike Hampton. The left-handed Flores (0-1, 15.43 earned-run average) has made five relief appearances since being recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs on Sept. 1.

"I was told I was in the mix to make a start if a spot came up," Flores said. "At the same time, my performances in my opportunities to this point haven't exactly screamed, 'I deserve a spot start.' And I hope to make good on an opportunity."

Flores, 27, will pitch against Cy Young Award candidate Curt Schilling (23-5, 2.81 ERA).

"The biggest thing will be to maintain composure and not get caught up in the variables that are already added on to a situation where you want to do your best," Flores said.

from Benton in Rocky Mtn News:

HAMPTON SCRATCHED: Mike Hampton will miss his second consecutive start because of a sprained ligament in his foot.

Hurdle hopes Hampton will be able to make another start this season.

"He feels a little bit better," Hurdle said.

Left-hander Randy Flores will start instead of Hampton on Friday against Arizona. Victor Santos is the probable starter Sunday in place of Cook.

Flores, claimed on waivers from the Texas Rangers on July 18, will make his sixth appearances for Colorado and his first start. He is 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in five relief appearances.

Santos, acquired from Detroit in March, has gone 0-4 with a 9.45 ERA in 20 games with the Rockies. He has made one other start.

"It's another opportunity for them to start," Hurdle said. "I'm not going predicate what they do in these last starts.

"It doesn't carry much more weight than what they've done up to this time."

A magnetic resonance imaging exam showed loose particles in Denny Neagle's left elbow, but he is scheduled to Saturday.

I don't like to bet on run lines very much, but I'm down for 440 to win 200 on DBacks tonight. The DBAcks are cruising into playoffs and still have something to play for, which is home field advantage. Schilling looking to get the Cyyoung also sounds good.
