1. They keep the ball in the hands of tailback Jamal Lewis and allow him to dictate the offensive tempo. Despite all the credit afforded Steve McNair, the quarterback only had 16 touchdown passes, just the 15th most among the quarterbacks who started all 16 games, and Lewis remains the centerpiece. Lewis isn't the same guy who rushed for over 2,000 yards in 2003, as evidenced by his 3.7-yard average since then, but he can still hammer defenses between the tackles and could maul the undersized Indianapolis front seven. Lewis had just one 100-yard performance in 2006, but there were eight games in which he registered 20 or more carries and the Ravens were 8-0 in those contests.

2. The Baltimore defense gets Peyton Manning moving his feet in the pocket. The Ravens were second in the league in sacks (60) and first in sack yards (418), and the unit featured five players with five or more sacks, led by end Trevor Pryce, with 13. The Baltimore edge rushers -- Adalius Thomas, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott -- are all dangerous hybrid-type defenders and the Indianapolis tackles will be tested. But Pryce is also effective when he moves inside, particularly on third down, where he will be matched up against the Colts' guards. On those occasions, the guards might need some assistance from center Jeff Saturday to help keep the very active Pryce out of the Indianapolis backfield.

3. Tight end Todd Heap can get up the seam against the Indianapolis safeties and make some plays in the middle of the field. Heap can also be a factor in the red zone, where he is a very clever receiver who knows how to uncover himself in tight spots. Heap is the guy to whom McNair most often looks to bail him out, especially on third down. Of the tight end's 73 receptions in the regular season, 46 were for first downs or touchdowns. The Ravens like to move the versatile Heap around, including playing him out in the slot, to help create mismatches. If the Colts are forced to bring free safety Bob Sanders down into the box to help support against the run, it will mean more room in which Heap can operate.

The Colts will win if ...
1. The defense can come close to the extraordinary effort it demonstrated in Saturday's wild- card victory over Kansas City and has a second solid performance versus the run. The Ravens don't want to have to put the game on McNair's arm, and certainly don't want him in many third-down situations, where the Colts' outside tandem of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis can come hard at him. McNair was sacked only 14 times in 2006, but he doesn't move well outside the pocket anymore, as evidenced by his career-low 119 rushing yards. And the veteran passer certainly doesn't have the deep-ball arm strength of his youth, having averaged just 6.52 yards per attempt, so third-and-longs are imperative for the Colts' defense.

2. Peyton Manning continues to be patient throwing the ball to his secondary receivers. The big-play guys in the Colts' No. 2-ranked passing game, of course, are wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, both of whom went over the 1,000-yard mark again in 2006. But the Indianapolis passing attack is even more productive when Manning gets tight end Dallas Clark and, in recent weeks, rookie tailback Joseph Addai, in the mix. Indianapolis played virtually all of Saturday's game with Clark aligned in the slot, and he had nine catches for 103 yards. Manning is finding that he can demoralize defenses by checking down to Addai or fellow tailback Dominic Rhodes, and letting them run in space.

3. Avoid turnovers at all costs. Baltimore led the NFL in takeaways (40) and turnover differential (plus-17) in 2006. The Ravens had 28 interceptions and three defenders had five or more pickoffs. The takeaway frenzy, not surprisingly, is fueled by the Baltimore pass rush, which will come from a variety of angles. No one is better at discerning where the rush is coming from than Manning, but he has to get rid of the ball and be as accurate as possible. The Baltimore secondary features two big-play ballhawks in safety Ed Reed and resurgent cornerback Chris McAlister and if you put the ball in their hands, there's a pretty good chance that they're going to put it in the end zone.

BREAKING DOWN THE MATCHUPS

When the Ravens pass Edge
Colts: The Colts have the league's No.2 pass defense. Look for them to build off of the smothering of Kansas City in the wild-card round and the continued benefit a healthy Bob Sanders gives the unit.

Ravens: As well as the Colts' pass defense has played, they never got tested much in the regular season. Steve McNair has revitalized the Ravens offense and Mark Clayton, held shy of 1,000 receiving yards, is an unsung threat.

When the Colts pass Edge
Colts: Peyton Manning already had his bad game vs. the Chiefs and survived. Expect him to pick on Samari Rolle early and often.

Ravens: Baltimore's overall defense was top-rated in the regular season, but its pass defense was 16th. Manning had two touchdown throws the last time these teams met in 2005. He'll be looking for more.

When the Ravens run Edge
Colts: Buoyed by holding Larry Johnson, the league's No. 2 rusher, to just 32 yards in the wild-card win, Indy's run-stoppers will be anxious to meet Jamal Lewis.

Ravens: Lewis, who rushed for 1,132 yards in 2006, still will see the Colts as the team that surrendered 173 rushing yards per game in the regular season. Look for him to expand his rushing average of 84.3 yards in his career against Indianapolis.

When the Colts run Edge
Colts: Baltimore surrendered only two 100-yard rushing games all season. So Joseph Addai will be hard-pressed to repeat the success he had against Kansas City.

Ravens: Only the Vikings are better at stopping the run than Baltimore. The Colts may finally miss Edgerrin James.

Special teams Edge
Colts: Adam Vinatieri was perfect (3 for 3 on field goals) in his Indianapolis playoff debut. The swirling winds of Baltimore can be challenging in January, but Vinatieri's record suggests he'll foot the bill.

Ravens: B.J. Sams' absence hurts the Ravens. They still have a clutch kicker in Matt Stover -- but he's not as clutch as Vinatieri.

Coaching Edge
Colts: Tony Dungy has been stung by playoff losses each season he's been with the Colts. Until he shows otherwise, we can only assume it will happen again.

Ravens: Brian Billick took his team to a new level when he assumed the play-calling duties. He also has the benefit of a home crowd still seeking vengeance for the now-visiting Colts' abandonment of the city.

Prediction: Ravens 19, Colts 17

MORE ON THE GAME

TV announcers: Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf

Sheridan's line: Ravens by 4

Keys to the game: The Chiefs were able to hold Colts WRs Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne to a combined seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown last Saturday. The Ravens would consider similar numbers a success, and, like Kansas City, they also have a veteran corner tandem in Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle. However, Rolle's recent susceptibility to the deep ball has certainly become a concern and will remain so vs. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Baltimore wants to keep the Colts' receivers in front of the secondary, limit big plays and force Indianapolis to sustain drives in order to score. A shootout doesn't favor the Ravens, who want to play a physical game with the goal of wearing down the Colts' undersized defense in the second half. So Ravens coach Brian Billick will stick with his ground game as long as the score remains close. But to keep the game in hand against the high-powered Colts, QB Steve McNair must capitalize on scoring opportunities and not allow the offense to settle for field goals.

Key matchup ? Colts pass blocking vs. Ravens OLB Adalius Thomas: One of the more unheralded defensive stars in the league, Thomas has increased his sack total in each of the past five seasons. He set a career high with 11 this season to go along with an interception, six passes defensed and 83 tackles. Thomas is extremely versatile and may have surpassed MLB Ray Lewis as the Ravens' top defensive playmaker. Fortunately for the Colts, they have one of the league's most experienced offensive lines. Much of the responsibility for keeping tabs on Thomas and recognizing blocking assignments will fall on 10-year veteran LT Tarik Glenn and the running backs. While the Colts rarely allow Manning to get his jersey dirty, Thomas has the ability to change the course of the game if he is able to apply pressure from the blind side.

Fast facts: The Ravens' .714 (5-2) postseason winning percentage leads the NFL. ... Colts K Adam Vinatieri has 29 career postseason field goals, second all-time behind Gary Anderson's 32. ... The Colts lead the series 4-2, but this will be the first postseason meeting between Baltimore's former team and its current one.

Going to ride him like an old mule...all this talk this week from him...felt like I was reading Jacks posts.
Big Colt fan growing up ...but Ravens are not Unitas to Berry...they are Clev. Browns lost in a crab net:mj07:
I'm sick of the Peyton naysayers..I hope he lights them up like the old strip clubs down on "The Block".
NOW THEM WAS "THE GOOD OLDE DAYS"

just my personal take on the game...

Samari Rolle will have Wayne all day...Colts don't flip flop wide receivers...If Peyton gets off early to Wayne then Ravens have to drop Linebacker into coverage..then the dink and dunk begins..
Conversely if Ravens get pass rush w/out a blitz Peyton will struggle..
If Ravens have to Blitz then Ravens corners are in a world of schlitz...
Every def. cordinator will tell ya flat out..Blitz Peyton and you can get you "T" Time for the rest of the post season..

I'm bringing shrimp and backfin crab meat to the gathering for the game...May get the Baltimore Colts bumber sticker and Unitas Restaurant Menu out of the vault and place it on top the wide screen. My friend just spent 300.00 bucks getting the 60" TV a tuneup just for the game...that should torque him up real..."TIGHT":mj07:

Enjot the game folks...
