i get back from the loss (please, no comments in this thread about the game, i'll deal with that when i get this fixed. seriously) and my pc died.

everything is on there. this is 100x worse than losing your wallet, if you carry one. my checkbooks for years, my credit card accts, my email and sponsor contacts, stock and retirement accts, my fave places, EVERYTHING is on that thing. EVERYTHING!

the power went out and it won't turn back on. when i do get it to turn on, it only lasts for about 1 minute then cuts off. (i've had this problem everytime the power goes off but i can usually get it running again.

i did get it running but then the monitor said no signal so i turned both off and now i can't get the computer running again.

i guess i'll get a new puter, no biggie, but can i take that hard drive with me and have them put that in the new puter?

not sure what to do or how to handle this. maybe i just need a new fan or power supply?

and i need it fixed FAST.

ideas?

thanks

yes, you can put a harddrive in other computers. I would try to find a computer very similiar to your, to ensure it is compatible.

Most are compatible with each other, but I would keep the same type, just to be sure.

On a side note, I would recommend buying an external hard drive and doing a backup, at least 1 time a month

what type of computer (Brand name)? Also, is it a laptop or desktop? Can I assume it is a factory installed hard drive, or did some put the computer together for you?

fukin gateway

i really don't have time to order a new GW. i am thinking circuit city that's nearby and having their geeks do the transfer.

this thing can probably be fixed because i know the problem is in the power button and/or the fan but i can't go a week or so w/o my info.

pain in the ass.

thanks for the reply. appreciate it

I would not go to a chain store. I would like a local place that does computer support.

Bring in the whole box, let them take out the harddrive.

completely agree with this suggestion. Not too expensive and worth it. I would say do it weekly if you do a lot of work on your computer. Had a computer crash a few years back and lost a ton. Won't make that mistake again.

If the hard drive has not crashed then you can take it out and place it into your new laptop/desktop. You can also get an IDE to USB cable that attaches to your hard drive to view it on your new computer. (Assuming its IDE)

If it is crashed..the data can still be recovered but you will need the software or someone with the experience.

If it is just a power supply problem..

A power supply costs about 40-50 dollars and to install it takes about 5 mins.

I never charge extra for the part just the labor. I normally always charge an hour regardless the situation unless it is a friend. ($60) You should pay between 50-100 for the part and labor.

The computer repair techs I normally use offer expedited service for 150% of the hourly rate, and emergency service for 200%. Good luck.

i can't get it to turn on and when i can the fan only runs for 30 seconds to a minute and the computer gives up and shuts down. so it's probably with both, correct (power switch and fan)?

yes, it does look like that but a smaller fan in the middle is what i was talking about. regardless, the machine will not turn on at all now, so i assume it's the power supply.

Every time I have bought from Radioshack, they will let me return anything if it doesnt work as long as I keep the receipt. The issue sounds like a power supply unit.

It is ok if your PSU doesnt look like the new one. They wont be identical.

I would suggest you buy one, and try to install it yourself. It is extremely easy.
