My sons laptop isn't working.I'm going to let him explain...
i've been dual booting xp-pro and suse 9.1 for the past few months, and decided to upgrade to suse 9.3 in doing so, i made a mess of my computer
when deleting the linux partitions(following instructions from a linux help site) the computer froze. i left it overnight and didn't get anywhere.
upon restart, i get stuck at the grub dialog, which no longer offers me a choice between windows and linux, but leaves me at a prompt.
i can't get into windows at all.
when i put the first suse 9.3 disk in, it probes the hardware on my computer and doesn't recognize a hard drive. "no automatic proposal, please manually put in mount points" it tells me to go to the partitioner dialogue, which i do..but that brings me to a dead end saying "insert the update cd for installation"(or maybe i just don't understand, i received 5 disks from suse, i don't know if any of them are an update cd?)
anyways, with no use of the computer i boot knoppix from cd.
luckily, /dev/hda1(windows partition) is still alive and well.
/dev/hda3 and hda4 were linux partitions. one being linux swap, and the other linux
and /hda2 is extended which holds /hda5, which holds the factory image of my harddrive.
i hope i didn't screw the machine up too bad.
if the only way to fix it includes losing windows, then so be it(but i'd be without all my music and pictures, which i can't back up because the burn laser on my cd-rw drive just died, also the reason i had to order the suse disks)
so far, i've deleted /dev/hda3 and /hda4 with fdisk from knoppix.
i've been trying new partitions all day, and made slight improvement(maybe) a few minutes ago.
i created a 11 gig partition /hda3, id set to 83 for linux and restarted with the suse disk in. for the first time i didn't get the "hard disk not found. please check your hardware" dialogue upon checking the hardware. i still got the same exact partitioning dialogue though.
i have QTParter and fdisk which i've been using.
the system is p4 2.66 ghz, 512mb ram, 60gig hdd
anybody know anything about partitioning and linux that can help me out?
or maybe i'm doing something wrong with the bios settings?
-box's confused and aggrivated son
