Hi Josh,

Hope all is well. I was thinking about getting the new Mac Pro that are being shipped out in February. I was just curious to hear what you would think about the difference between a quad or six core machine. I will be using it for both home stuff and work so I'm not sure exactly which one I should buy. Right now I have the Mac Mini hooked up with two extra hard drives. I guess I like to have a lot of storage space and memory for videos, music, etc. I will also be using it for backups and to store documents, pictures, etc. (which don't take much space). What do you think? Thanks!

Mac's are definitely not my area of expertise, but I can speak to the multi core processor as well as hard drive space.

Let's start with hard drive space. It is at an all time low price wise as you can get an external terabyte for under 100 bucks. The future is cloud storage but as cheap as physical memory is now you can always add external or flash drives to back up your pics and videos.

Multi core processing beyond quad is getting a little ridiculous as normal users won't see a difference with the speed of the actual processor. More ram and better graphics processor is more important in my eyes at least in the pc world.

I would be curious if joker had anything to add

I'm a Mac guy. I have an older Mac Pro. I agree with Josh that Ram is more important than processor speed. Also, solid state drives are becoming the norm. The most reliable. They may end up being the only way they ship. Not sure about that though. They are much more money. But I would go that route if possible. When you go into the Mac stores, they will tell you that hard drives last around 4 to 5 years. An SSD should last a lot longer and be much more reliable.
