For the resident computer experts -- got a few questions.

I got a virus this weekend and in my frustration decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP. So far so good, except for the fact that I have no sound. Whenever I do something that would involve a sound, the computer spits out a low pitch beep that reminds me of the sound when you press ctl/alt/delete too many times. I tried to play the same .wav files and it says that no audio hardware in installed. Not sure if I'm missing a driver or what, but that noise is piercing my ears right now.

Another thing I noticed of less importance but near equal annoyance, when I scroll down a webpage it is not a smooth motion, it's very wavy/chopping. Same if I were to minimize the page and try to move it, it almost leaves a "tail" and moves in a wavy style.

If anyone knows anything about either of these I'd appreciate some help. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I figured out the sound issue, just had to find the correct driver.

As for the scrolling issue I'm stumped. I'd really appreciate help with this one.

Check you mouse options. There are options that I have seen the pointer tail move around.

Or if its affecting your whole pages, you may still have the virus. Run every virus check you can and adaware or spysweeper too.

Scott.....you last post leads me to believe you may have taken my post the wrong way... it was a bash on YOU (ok, and on ME, cuz we are likely about the same rank as far as computer literacy goes.)

we both see it the same way....LOL (yeah, what KMA said) i don't always understand what she says, but know that it has a 99.9% chance of being correct)

Yeah they are. And I never got to see what KMA had to say about my situation, which is really starting to get on my nerves. The scroll is so slow and looks like the ocean the way it waves. So KMA if you know what the problem is I'd really appreciate some help, I'm about to punt this laptop out the window.

A friend recomended that I install Firefox and give it a shot, but the same problem persists. At least I know now it's not an internet explorer issue.

Strange thing though is that the scroll is normal if I'm working in Windows, such as in the control panel. The scroll is smooth and fast.

Thanks Pujo --- finally got to the bottom of this after a friend helped me out.

Much like the audio the video driver didn't get installed with XP when I re-did it all again. Now it seems like I'm up and running smoothly again.
