Anyone know whether it is possible to actually slow down your PC by adding too much extra RAM? My system started out with just under 100Mb of RAM when I got it, and then I purchased two additional memory cards each at 128Mb. I figured this would allow my games and graphics-intensive applications to run a little more smoothly. Sometimes my computer seems to run slower now than before the upgrade. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

I have an AMD-K6 533Mhz processor in a compaq presario (5451 model). Windows 98. Hmmm, let's see, I had to install a new hard drive about a month ago because my old one burned out completely. I did install new anti-virus software that I didn't have before I lost my old hard drive. But I encountered some slowing down both before and after I had to replace the drive. So I kind of doubt that has anything to do with it. I also have a 3d graphics accelerator (Nvidia GeForce2).

Thanks for the reply and any suggestions.

Did you buy the same kind of ram as you had before? there are many different types out there now....

It could be the antivirus program.... on my older computer P2 266mhz after installing an antivirus program the computer tottally slowed down.... due to it scanning everything before running each program....

Have you defragged/scandisked your hard drive recently??

tough to say whats wrong without actually looking at the computer...

Depending on your settings, it's probably the anti-virus software. I've seen it bring some applications to a crawl.

I'm pretty sure I got the same kind of ram both times. Is there an easy way to check the specs of the ram without peeking inside the computer? And yes, I defrag fairly regularly. I would tend to agree that the anti-virus software might be slowing me down, but it seemed like I was experiencing some slow down before I replaced the hard drive and installed the anti-virus program.
