Well it's supposed to only be like a 7-10% performance improvement, but I don't know the price differences, if you can get a good deal on the 3rd ones go for them, if they are about the same I'd just go with the newer stuff just so you are future proofing a little longer and battery life is supposed to be better.

Processors are like car engines - They get faster and more efficient over the years.
I liken the difference between the 3rd & 4th generation intel processors to a car engine made 2-3 years ago but never driven to a current year model. The differences will be small and when you look at computational power, the difference would not be noticeable to a recreational user.
I've started adding GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) to my list of things to look at when buying a laptop. The GPU you get with a laptop you are usually married to because of how it is integrated in to the laptop motherboard. On a desktop they are easier to change. Unfortunately I do not have a lot of knowledge on GPU's so I usually google something like "is Nvidia Geforce gtx 700 a good graphics processor" or "is intel hd graphics 4600 any good"
I would not be afraid to get a 3rd gen processor if the price difference is noticeable.
Good Luck
