? Raymond Cotton, one of two scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster, has a shoulder injury that could require surgery according to coach Houston Nutt.
But Nutt?s hope is that the injury, which is believed to be a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, is something Cotton can play through. He expects the redshirt freshman to be at practice this afternoon and tomorrow for The Grove Bowl.
Nutt said the injury goes back to Cotton?s high school days.
If Cotton needs surgery to repair the shoulder, he?d likely need 4-6 months of recovery time.
Cotton started out the spring in a two-man race for the starting quarterback spot with sophomore Nathan Stanley. But about a week ago, Cotton had to sit out a few practices because of a sore shoulder. Still, he?s been going through several drills and occasionally throwing.
With Cotton usually on the sidelines, Stanley has emerged as the likely No. 1, improving each day with his accuracy and reads. The Rebels also hope to have Randall Mackay, a junior college quarterback, on campus during the summer. Mackay put up big numbers in junior college and could challenge for some sort of role with the offense.
