Cowboys Shut Down Prescott, Zeke
August 22, 2018 // by Shaun Ranft

As far as preseason is concerned, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott won?t be taking another snap for the Dallas Cowboys.

But don?t worry, it is not because they are hurt.

In fact, the reason is quite logical (and simple). Offensive linemen Travis Frederick (stingers) and Zach Martin (knee) are hurt. So hurt that they?re actually going to miss the rest of preseason. Therefore, the Cowboys don?t want to risk the health of Prescott or Elliott. Ahead of their season opener against Carolina, they?ll go into it with just practice reps. That makes sense.

Don?t like it? Well, then take it up with Jerry Jones.

?Yeah, because when you don?t have that front out there, that starting group, and that might make you a little porous. ? And you wouldn?t want to be porous there with Dak,? the owner said on a radio show this week.

The good news is that both Frederick and Martin should be back for Week 1. In the meantime, the Cowboys are coming off a down 9-7 campaign. After winning their division the year prior, they didn?t make the postseason. Prescott took a step backwards. Elliott couldn?t stay on the field. Across 10 games, the halfback put up 4.1 yards per carry while averaging a league-leading 98.3 yards per game. His rookie season saw him average 5.1 yards per carry, however. He did also lead the league in yards per game that year (108.7).

As Dak and Elliott enter Year 3 together, it?s all about the signal-caller. In Year 1, Prescott threw for 23 touchdowns. That?s not a lot, but it?s okay when you?re only throwing four interceptions. Last season, his total fell to 22 touchdowns while throwing 13 interceptions. That?s going to have to change if the Cowboys wish to make it back to the playoffs this season.

For their sake, they?ll be hoping the extra rest helps.
