ARLINGTON, Texas ? It?s a shocking finish for Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox.
The star-crossed college football career for the senior ended Friday when Cowboys coach Mike Gundy announced in a release that Cox, who admittedly went through numerous ups and downs during his four years at OSU, will not play in today?s 74th annual Cotton Bowl Classic. Gundy cited that Cox violated team rules.
The release stated that OSU would not comment further, but it is believed that Cox violated curfew.
On his facebook wall on Friday, Cox wrote, "I?m officially not playing in the bowl game.?
In response to Cox?s comment, former Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant wrote: "Call me...? Then a bit later, "For the whole game?....That?s way too much.... a Cowboy reminder is enough... not the whole game.?
Later on his Facebook page, Cox said he was 30 minutes late for curfew.
According to the Tulsa World, Cox also posted, "I wz jus 30 mins late pass curfew, traffic wz bad 4 new years, (but) 4get gundy, i put 2 much in 4 this school 4 him 2 do me like that, i mean its a bowl game that the players (fought) hard 4, we should b able 2 hav some kinda freedom, (but) its all good, i had fun while it lasted, once a cowboy always a cowboy, regardless of gundy."
The loss of Cox is a huge blow to an OSU pass defense that will face All-SEC receiver Shay Hodge of Ole Miss. Cox was a second-team AP All-American, Thorpe Award semifinalist and is the Big 12?s all-time leader in kick return yardage.
Plus, OSU will be without its top backups at cornerback and kick returner. No. 3 cornerback Andrew McGee will miss the Cotton Bowl after injuring his neck against Oklahoma. No. 2 kick returner Victor Johnson will miss today?s game after suffering a torn ACL shortly before a win over Texas Tech.
Senior Terrance Anderson has started every game at one cornerback position. Senior Maurice Gray, redshirt freshman Brodrick Brown and true freshman Andrae May will likely see more playing time at the opposite corner in Cox?s absence.
Gray (5-foot-8, 183 pounds) has been OSU?s fourth corner for much of the season and has seen significant action both at cornerback and on special teams. Brown (5-8, 180) is one of the Cowboys? fastest players and has been a contributor on special teams. May (5-11, 171) was pulled out of his redshirt season late in the year and brings promise and good size.
Sophomore safety Johnny Thomas is listed as the No. 2 punt and kickoff returner on OSU?s depth chart.
Cox?s suspension is a disappointing end to his senior season after coaches and teammates raved about his increased maturity and leadership during his final year in Stillwater. Cox said in Friday?s edition of The Oklahoman: "When I first came here, I used to not really go to class as much. I didn?t think it was going to hurt me. I found out the hard way. I used to have to run almost every day for missing those classes.?
