Picked up the babygirl's ashes today. I'm very pleased with the way the vet's office handled all of this. They've been nothing but nice and sympathetic the whole way through this ordeal. The box that Lizzie is in is very nice. It's wooden and hand-carved.....very sturdy.

She is now home and at rest right beside my Dad (yes I have his ashes). It's a small amount of comfort knowing that the two of them are together.

Let me tell all of you again.....thank you so much for being here for me through this past couple of weeks. It means a lot to know that I've got a place to turn in order to vent my feelings. I know I've met a lot of you in person....and I really want to meet more of you. This site really is the best....and it's the people that make it that way. Thanks Jack.

I hope you realize just how good you were to her and made her life really worth living. She was a lucky girl. :toast:

Bart: So sorry for your loss! Been these and done that! The pain will go away in time. The Rainbow Bridge makes me cry everytime I read it.

What I did (and maybe it's not for you) was to go to my local shelter and adopt another dog that may be on the "put down list".

When my dog passed, I remember asking her if she would be mad if someday I adopted another dog. The look she gave me was heartwarming....as if to say today is my day to go, but if you can save another dog in my memory, please do so!!!!! It was like she was saying that her end would save another!!!!! I can still see the look on her face and it makes me cry just typing this.

I can never replace my girl, but her gift (who now is a male) makes me happy everyday that I saved another dog from being put down. She is smiling from above and I will see her someday with my new dog.

Sorry for your loss. Maybe it will be some other dogs gain! :)

My plan is to ultimately visit the shelter. I plan to go and just be around the creatures that I love. It's funny but many of us care about and spend more time with our dog than actual people. And the best thing in the world is the consistancy. They love you no matter what.

But I do indeed plan to go to the shelter. I may not take a dog home on the first visit...or even the second. There will come a time though when I do leave with a dog. In the meantime though, I still just have to absorb all that's happened to me over the past 2 weeks. I lost my baby girl so suddenly. My heart is so broken right now

I come into your thread waiting to read you saving another. Many of you know my story with me losing my wife to cancer, and I believe you were one to respond many times to me, no need to rehash it, but my 2 dogs have been my savior. I would take a bullet for them.

Looking at Lizzie's picture, and on the subject of rescuing dogs, it reminds me that black dogs are often the last to get adopted at shelters. They are put down at a much higher rate than lighter colored dogs. For anyone thinking about going to a shelter to get a dog, please keep that in mind.

GL, Bart. Please continue to keep us all posted...

never knew that. Thanks for the info. I will be sure and pass it on.

Bart,
Chin up. I know it's tough, it might not be too long before you have another wonderful puppy to spoil. I wish you the best.

Hey Bart,
Hope your hanging in there. I have to agree with Mr.TJBELL, if and when you decide to get another dog, save a dog's life and get it from a shelter or rescue centre. It took me 15 months after my dog's passing and my wife's coaxing, to convince me it was time to get another dog. We adopted a beautiful golden retreiver at a local rescue shelter, she is an awesome dog.
All the best to you.....

Thanks, Mjolnir.

Yeah, black dogs definitely get a bad rap. I think part of it is because the so-called "aggressive" breeds like Dobies and Rotties are black, and that clouds people's judgments. If you do a Google search on "black dogs last to be adopted" or something like that, I'd bet there are a lot of articles on the subject.

Every dog I've ever owned has been either all black or mostly black.

Thanks, Vinnie. I know that I'll certainly own another dog sometime soon...and it will definitely be a rescue.

It's just weird how my sense of "normal" around the house is starting to change. I do have a cat, Louie, and he has been great. I've had him for about 12 years and he's been doing his best to keep Daddy happy. But I miss the nights where Lizzie and I would lay on the couch and I'd just stroke her ears while she snoozed. If I had to guess, I'd say that was her favorite times together with me, too.

So things are certainly different and what is "normal" now is certainly different that what "normal" used to be. That's really hard to deal with.

Hey Bart, Been wanting to send you my sympathies for awhile and didn't want to rehash an old thread, but our dog has been fighting cancer for awhile now and seeing your thread I couldn't comment, knowing what was coming up with our pug.

Anyway had to put her down tonight, just a few hours ago. Kids and wife are a wreck, but happy I was able to hold her as she was drifting off. She was in alot of pain and I told the vet to tell me when enough was enough. Wish there was more we could do, but there comes a time when you just have to let her go.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know Lizzie has a Pug friend visiting her tonight and I'm sure the two of them are running around with all the other dogs up there.

Hope all is well and thanks for sharing the thread!

Ya it is very true. You get them as pups and now realzie they aren't going to be around forever.

Anyway, didn't want to open a new thread as all that needs to be said is in this thread already.

Thanks and good luck tonight!

1%er,

So sorry to hear about this. My sympathies go out to your family for sure. I know that it feels like you lost a family member tonight. I still miss the baby girl like crazy, but the raw pain is starting to heal some. When you open your heart up to dogs, it's a wonderful thing...but at the same time, you know what you are getting yourself into going into it. It's almost a certainty you are going to outlive them.

All I can tell you for now is that Lizzie was up there waiting for your pug, and she's showing her the ropes right now....letting her know where all the best spots are.

In the meantime, if you need to talk or just vent what you are feeling.....just let loose right here. I can tell you that it absolutely helped me. I'm certainly not over Lizzie by any stretch of the imagination....but I can type about her now and at least not shed a tear (at least not all the time).

Just got back to the thread, still brought tears understanding how much a pet means to a family.

I hope you are dealing well with this, and the joy out if it is God gave us the ability to carry memories for a reason. That way, Lizze will always live on!
