Cubs and Phillies meet as hot clubs

For many people, a trip to Washington, D.C. is a wonderful and historic adventure. The city has many great things to see and do and a short drive in several directions can further enhance the experience. For the Chicago Cubs, the four day excursion to out nation?s capitol turned out to be just the right kind of stimulus package needed to start the second half of the year.

The Cubs (47-43, -4.9 units) marched into woeful Washington and swept the Nationals in four games and have taken over second place in the NL Central, trailing St. Louis by two games, though are tied with them in the loss column. If Washington was the right team for manager Lou Pinella?s squad to play at the moment, Monday?s opponent, Philadelphia is just the exact opposite.

The Phillies (51-38, +6.5 units) are fresh off a weekend in Miami and swept their then nearest competitor in the NL East, Florida, building a 6.5 game lead in the division. The defending World Series champions are on eight-game winning streak and have been the conqueror in 12 of last 13 contests. The Phils have won every way imaginable; from a 2-0 shutout to a 22-1 blowout and Sunday?s victory improves them to incomparable 29-15 (+16.8 units) record on the road.

Philadelphia returns home to Citizens Bank Park, where they have turned around, after a half a season of dismal play. The Phils have won nine of last 10 at home to raise record to 22-23 (-10.3 units) and they are 21-8 vs. teams like Chicago whose hitters strike out seven or more times a game this year.

Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 3.18 ERA) is the No.5 starter at present; however this job is in serious jeopardy with the signing of Pedro Martinez. Lopez will have likely a total of three starts before Martinez comes off the DL, meaning he will have to have a few inspired efforts. Lopez is pitching on 11 days rest and in his career, is 10-1 in home games when working on seven or more days rest. (Team's Record)

The Cubs will counter with their only All-Star, Ted Lilly (9-6, 3.18), who is pitching with two additional off days, since developing inflammation in his left knee. The Cubs lefthander has been extra sharp in last three outings with 2.11 ERA, striking out 20 and walking only three in 21 1/3 innings. Here is a little known fact on Lilly. In the last three years, including this season, only Roy Halladay (47) and Josh Beckett (44) have more wins than Lilly?s total of 41.

Sportsbook.com has established Philadelphia as a -110 money line favorite, with a total of Un9.5. The Phillies are 51-23 off a win and 22-8 UNDER with an on-base percentage of .350 or better over their last 20 games. The Cubs have played like they are in hibernation as underdogs with 2-15 mark in 2009. Chicago is 30-12 UNDER vs. an average bullpen whose ERA is 3.75 to 4.50 this season.

This is the ESPN Monday night telecast which will start at 7:05 Eastern, with Philly having taken four of the last six on home turf over the Cubs.

The All-Star break certainly didn't slow down the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies.

They'll attempt to win a ninth straight game for the first time in more than three years Monday night when they open a three-game home series against the surging Chicago Cubs.

The Phillies (51-38) entered the All-Star break with five straight wins to conclude a 9-1 homestand, during which they outscored opponents 66-27 while batting .302 with 15 homers. They returned from the layoff to take three games at division rival Florida in a rain-shortened set, capped by Sunday's 5-0 victory.

Philadelphia's eight-game winning streak is its longest since a nine-game run April 30-May 9, 2006. That streak was also the last time the club won six in a row at Citizens Bank Park.

A revitalized Jimmy Rollins, who collected three hits and came a homer shy of the cycle Sunday, has been a major reason for the recent surge. The shortstop is hitting .397 (23 for 58) with eight doubles, a homer, eight RBIs, five stolen bases and 10 walks over his last 14 games.

That stretch has raised the 2007 NL MVP's batting average from .205 to .236, and has come after he went 0 for 27 in his previous seven contests.

"When he gets on base, he makes things happen and it's definitely a different offense," Phillies left fielder Raul Ibanez said. "He's such an electric player."

The Phillies will give the ball to Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 3.18 ERA), who is hoping a long layoff will help him put a shoulder injury behind him.

The right-hander had his last outing on July 8 cut short after five innings due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder, and he didn't factor in the decision of a 3-2 win over Cincinnati. He was effective despite the injury, allowing two runs and five hits with four strikeouts.

That performance came five days after he yielded two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 7-2 win over New York, earning his first major league win in nearly two years just hours after being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Lopez hasn't faced the Cubs since getting tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings of an 8-5 loss with Colorado on June 26, 2007.

The Phillies won four of seven meetings with Chicago last season. They took two of three at Philadelphia from April 11-13, 2008, and haven't dropped a home series against the Cubs since losing two of three April 6-8, 2001.

The Cubs (47-43) are looking to match their season-high five game winning streak - set May 10-16 - after completing a four-game sweep of major league-worst Washington with an 11-3 victory Sunday.

"We'll go into Philly with some momentum, playing better on the road," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said after watching his team collect a season high-tying 16 hits Sunday. "They're hot as heck, so we'll see."

Ted Lilly (9-6, 3.18), the team leader in wins, strikeouts (101) and innings (119), is scheduled to take the mound after left knee inflammation pushed back his scheduled start from two days.

"I was feeling OK," Lilly told the Cubs' official Web site. "Hopefully with the rest, it'll give me a chance to feel better."

The left-hander, the Cubs' lone All-Star representative, has won his last two starts while allowing three runs and 13 hits with 13 strikeouts in 14 1-3 innings. He had been 0-2 with a 4.39 ERA in his four prior outings.

Lilly's last trip to the mound resulted in his 100th victory. He allowed one run and four hits in eight innings of a 5-2 win over St. Louis on July 11.

Lilly has compiled a 6.75 ERA while losing his last three starts against the Phillies, two of them last year.

Phils, Cubs put win streaks on line in marquee matchup

Phils, Cubs put win streaks on line in marquee matchup

The Chicago Cubs have yet to lose since the All-Star break and own the second-longest winning streak in the majors. Tonight, they begin a three-game set against the team with the longest.

Winners of a season-high eight in a row, the Philadelphia Phillies play host to Chicago at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies won five straight games prior to last Tuesday's All-Star Game and opened up the second half with a rain-shortened three-game sweep of Florida. The club captured Sunday's finale, 5-0, to win for the eighth straight time in Miami and open up a 6 1/2-game lead over Atlanta for first place in the National League East.

Jimmy Rollins fell a homer shy of the cycle on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Rollins has a hit in 13 of his last 14 games, lifting his average from .205 on July 1 to its current .236 mark.

Raul Ibanez added a two-run double, while rookie starter J.A. Happ continued his surprise run with seven shutout innings. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth inning to improve to 7-0 on the year.

"I wasn't sure how I'd be able to respond coming off the couple days break," Happ told the Phillies' Web site. "I had a questionable bullpen [session], but the control was there [Sunday], for the most part."

Happ and the Phillies are an MLB-best 12-1 since July 3 and haven't lost since July 7 in posting their longest winning streak since a nine-game run from April 30-May 9, 2006. That's an impressive run that 33-year-old hurler Rodrigo Lopez will try to extend tonight.

After winning his Phils debut on July 3, Lopez left his last outing five days later following five innings of work due to right shoulder inflammation. He gave up two runs on five hits versus the Cincinnati Reds that night and did not factor into the decision of a 3-2 victory.

Lopez, who has a 3.18 earned run average in his two starts but could lose his rotation spot once Pedro Martinez is healthy, was hammered for eight runs over 4 2/3 innings in his only other career start versus the Cubs. That came on June 26, 2007 while with Colorado.

Cubs starter Ted Lilly will also be looking to return from an ailment, as left knee inflammation pushed his scheduled start from Saturday back to tonight. Lilly hasn't pitched since July 11, when he held the Cardinals to a run and four hits over eight innings to win the 100th game of his career.

The All-Star lefty has won back-to-back starts, giving up just three runs in that span, and is 9-6 with a 3.18 ERA. He has been better at home this year, going just 3-5 with a 4.66 ERA in nine road starts.

Lilly is 1-3 with a 4.88 ERA in four career starts against Philadelphia.

He will try to pitch the Cubs to a season high-tying fifth straight win after the team came out of the break with a four-game sweep of lowly Washington. The Cubs used a seven-run fourth inning yesterday on the way to an 11-3 victory, a frame that was sparked by Alfonso Soriano's second home run in as many days.

Soriano is hitting .371 with six RBI over his last 10 games and is a career .343 hitter (12-for-35) with three homers and five RBI versus Lopez.

Rookie Jake Fox added a three-run homer and had a career-high four RBI on Sunday, while Mike Fontenot and Micah Hoffpauir each had three hits in helping the Cubs get four games over .500 (47-43) for the first time since May 20.

"In this series we scored six, six and 11 (runs) -- for us that's very good production," said Cubs skipper Lou Piniella. "We have to be pleased with our 4-0 start."

The Cubs remained two games in back of St. Louis for first place in the NL Central

The Phillies won four of seven versus the Cubs last year, including two of three in Philadelphia.
