pirates are one of the few teams in the league who play hard after theyre out of a race. theres no stats that are going to support a pittsburgh play (well, besides the cubs being way to inconsistent to be a prohibitive favorite). i just can never justify maddux as a huge favorite, even when he was with atlanta. control pitchers need their location. hes not the kind of chalk that can just go out there and dominate with less than his best stuff (a la schilling, the unit, pedro, even prior), and while maddux has been pretty good lately i can hear it on my radio now: pirates win. pirates win. pirates win.
