Leave it to the Raiders to think big.

A source familiar with the situation said the Raiders are expected to sign free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper today.

With the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, the Raiders signed JaMarcus Russell, who is 6-foot-5 and in the 250-pound range. Culepper is the only quarterback on the market with comparable size, at 6-foot-4 and a listed weight of 265 pounds.

Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Sunday night Culpepper was being brought in for a workout. He also said the Raiders had already seen Culpepper recently.

With Russell out, the Culpepper would join Josh McCown and Andrew Walter, who have been splitting quarterback reps with the first team. It's been a relatively even competition, with Walter faring better in the pocket and McCown excelling on the move.

Questions remain about Culpepper's skills following a serious knee injury in Minnesota. Should he sign, all parties are likely to say Culpepper has a clean bill of health _ which is what happened last season in Miami when the Dolphins were forced to switch quarterbacks after four games.

More as news develops from Napa . . .

make up their friggin minds...

update:

Raiders signed QB Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract.

Pending the health of his knee, Daunte will compete with Josh McCown and Andrew Walter to keep the seat warm for JaMarcus Russell. The loser of the battle will likely be released.
