CWood...talk me off the ledge

You know Michigan football as well as anyone on this forum, and I don't know many people that know folks up there anymore. They have to be hoping that the NCAA finds some wrongdoings to make the firing of Rich Rod easier...and most importantly...cheaper. Tell me he is going to be out after these next two weeks of beatings are done. Wisky and OSU are going to run all over this team, and this joker has to be gone!!!

1) No major violations, no chance.

2) Lame duck AD Bill Martin did not resign, he was fired (reasons for which will become public shortly). The new AD hire will largely determine RR's long term future.

3) RR will get another year, no matter who the next AD is. I do think there's a long shot chance that he'd walk with a negotiated buyout settlement if he thinks he could land a good southern job in 2011. There are rumors that FSU asked permission to speak to him last week but they are unconfirmed and likely untrue in my opinion.

4) If (when?) he's fired after 2010 the next coach will very likely be Harbaugh or Miles (who still would return if given the chance). If the next AD is David Brandon then it will be Harbaugh. If not, it could be Miles. (and yes I'm aware of Harbaugh's public comments two years ago)

Best case is RR rights this ship but I think that's at best a 50/50 proposition next year given the continued youth on defense and pathetic position coaches on that side of the ball.

Not sure if that will bring you back from the ledge, but that's basically the gist of it.

CWood....thanks for sharing your insight.

As a season ticket holder, it definitely has been a painful two seasons under RR. My biggest concern is on defense. Whether its the position coaches as you suggest, or if it is the lack of talent being brought in on that side of the ball or the fact that RR teams have never been dominant defensively with the 3-3-5, the bottom line is that they are 3-11 in the Big 10 under RR.

The offense is slightly better than last year, but the lack of a passing game leaves them one dimensional and unable to stretch the field to create space for the running game.

This gimmicky run-first spread offense just isn't my cup of tea. The pro game is moving to a heavy dose of the passing game and I just feel going with RR's type of offense is moving us in the wrong direction and attracting less talented players.

CWood...does this have anything to do with the home & personal loans offered to the coaching staff from the bank where Martin is the Chairman? Or perhaps the rift with the 2 security guards that he apologized for today?

Interesting times at UofM and unfortunate that it is leaving a mark on such a storied tradition.

I think Miles would bring a little SEC talent and swagger back north! RR, will get one more year, which will help get Miles up here!

Not the loans, nothing improper there and they were cleared by the regents just to be sure.

The two security guard incidents were part of a larger pattern of behavior around the department and town. That was the reason he was pushed out. Martin is very lucky the DetNews wrote the article about those incidents. Shockingly, the Freep is currently digging and if they find some people willing to talk there might be a bigger and more damaging piece upcoming.

As an outsider looking in:

How can anyone be calling for the firing of Rich Rod? He takes on a program that was in a long time spiraling downfall, to expect him to be at the top of the conference in his second year is totally unrealistic.. I know Michigan fans don't want to hear this but to ever expect the BIG 10 dominanance of your father's era IS OVER. Sure Michigan will have some big years from time to time but never again the years of dominance.. Too many shools and too many players of today and it calls for parody. Look at all the conferences around and the teams that were always Powers. Florida great the last couple of years but had struggles. Same with Nebraska and now Okie. USC has been dominant in the PAC 10 but that school has a major recruiting advantage over every top divvision 1 college. Now I am getting off point, give Rich Rod a year or two more and if the team still struggles then get rid of him, but to expect excellence this early is crazy.. Could be worse, could be a fan of GOLDIE like me:(

First off, the program was NOT in a downfall. They were one season removed from a Rose Bowl, and beat the defending national champs and God's Gift Tebow in the Cap One bowl the year Carr retired. Longest bowl streak in the country, had been to 3 Rose Bowls in 5 years, etc. I'm not sure how you define "downfall", but that doesn't qualify in my book.

Second, no one expects him to be at the top of the conference given the transition and attrition. People do expect us not to finish dead effing last in the conference, which is where we are headed in year 2. I could handle middle of the pack. It shows improvement from last year, and the team is young. However, you'll never convince me this is anywhere near the worst roster of talent in the B10.

RR may or not be a good coach, but his performance at UM in the last two year has been an abortion. He'll get one more year to prove himself. If I'm the new UM AD he gets one year to make a NYD bowl game and finish at or near the top of the B10. If not, GTFO.

Maybe downfall was exteme but Michigan has not been MICHIGAN in some time when they were a national power.. Thats the whole BIG 10 right now.., if I remember Michigan was suppose to be a national contender that year.. Lost to APPALACHAIN ST. and got destroyed by Oregon. Beat some mediocre BIG 10 teams and you are right, they beat a dis-intrested Florida team in the bowl game. Plus Michigan was rallying for the coach in his last game but other than winning that game they didn't beat anyone of signiificance except Penn st.. Don't say beating the GOPHS was anything special.. Back to poiint RR can't be accountable for the team he has right now.. Next year he can..

Look, we can argue all day about that 2007 team but the fact is UM was not in a free fall. They had a down year just one year after going 11-2.

RR is accountable for going 3-11 (and likely 3-13) in the B10. The roster has limitations, but there are enough players to be a .500 team (at worst) in a lousy Big Ten. He's been pathetic so far.

Or Robinson needs to get rid of the lousy assistants RR brought with him from WVU, depends on who you believe.

I think it is Karma...not a flame. RR is a proven lying assho9le and he is getting what he deserves.

The way Bill Martin snuck into Toledo to negotiate without even a courtesy call to WVU is getting what he deserves.

We got Bill Stewart....I am not sure what we did to deserve that, yet. :)

Irish,

I am not sure WVU would ever consider a Hokie...Foster sure did campaign for that job in the media. If Stewart would have just lost that Fiesta Bowl....I am pretty sure Skip Holtz would have been named coach.

I can't figure out why Bud Foster can't land a job. He seems like he would be a good fit for a bunch of programs.

I am sure it is do to his lack of knowledge on the offensive side... but you get him and get a new offensive Co and I see a VERY good foundation for a team.
