Cwood97,

Hey man.....can you shed any light on all these rumors circulating about LC's reitrement.......announcement next week is whats being said, but it is fast becoming the world's worst kept secret.

Of course, this has been talked about for so many months, that it has never really been much of a secret.

Anyway, Internet is a flutter, and as usual way ahead of the traditional media......are we just hearing standard Internet blather or does this have any legs......judging from your intimation in Cie's thread, I suspect that you may have heard something.

Whats the scoop......I need a report from Fort Schembelcher.

Thanks in advance!

If Miles takes the Mich job(which he definitely will when asked), when would this happen? Would he stick it out through the end of the year if LSU is poised for a shot at the Nat'l Title, or would an announcement be made in December, leaving Pelini or Crowton as interim HC for the bowl:shrug:

The scoop I have is that Lloyd has officially notified Bill Martin that this is it (no surprise) and that Les Miles has spoken with Martin and will take the job. Obviously UM will have to go through the process of interviewing candidates and this will take some time. The info I have is that Les agreed to keep any assistants who want to stay but that he may shuffle their roles.

I don't anticipate this will be public until December but some seem to believe it will be announced next week.

I would guess it will end up public this week that Carr is gone and add to the ramp up for Ohio State.

The anyone with a pulse will be bringing it up every 5 minutes with Forrest. And he wont be able to lie with a straight face like Saban. It is going to be an issue.

My lone fear is that this season is ruined. Either way, LSU will be FAR better off w/o Les. His 30-5 record means little without SEC titles.

At the risk of hyperbole....

you and I could coach that team to 30-5.

You guys would be at least one game better......I'm thinking a better gameplan vs UGA in the '05 SEC title game. Or, coach the team to more than 3 points vs Auburn last year.

Despite my avatar (IU is my alma mater), I am a life long UM fan, season ticket holder, been sitting in the same seats since 1979, where my father and grandfather have sat since 1950s ........so, I'll say this about Michigan with some credibility.

It is stuck in the past generation. It is a tribute to the talent they have at hand that they have not sunk into something worse. Yet, they dont use all their talent; and the talent they do use, they only decide to show it against certain opponents.

UM fans have taken to Les/Forrest because they see him going for it and attacking and they feel it is that aggression that the program is lacking. People are critical of Les, and Sun you have been quite vocal about that.....with that in mind and the liklihood that he would be a top candidate, I've watched him closely this year.....i like what I see at times, but i am not sold on him either.....Lloyd would be shredded if he plunged his half back four straight times into the line like Les did vs UK......yet most of the Michigan blogs have been applauding all of Les' decisions this year, that one included....i say be careful what you wish for.....sure, Les ran that great fake FG vs So Car, but, hell, even Lloyd ran an end around pass to clinch the Illinois game, so i am not that OH My God looks how awesome Les is as a playcaller.

You want a play caller? They are out there. And their names are not Les Miles!!

I'll welcome Les w/ open arms, as long as he brings Pellini with him....of course, that wont happen......i do respect his love for his alma mater.....but that only brings up another contradiction with some in the UM fan base......many want a break from the whole Michigan Man philosophy, yet these are the same people beating the drum for Les.....hello, he defines a Michigan Man.

I personally like Brian Kelly......i know he has flaws too, but what coach does not....he created a power at Grand Valley State....won a MAC title at CMU, where our current O.C., failed miserably as a head coach....and he has helped Cincy go to the next level, although he did inherit a pretty good situation there....he brings a modern philosophy to the game....Les is a dinosaur at heart, and I am not so sure he would increase our playbook, which has really only been about five or six plays long for the last decade or so.....

Bottom line......Michigan remains a flat out awesome job......I think if the school opened this up and did a national search (something they have never done since hiring BO in 1968) and think they would be amazed at all the great candidates out there and they would find the right coach.

Hiring Les seems to reek of doing the safe move, something that everyone expects, so lets do it....you would be shocked at how many people up here feel that since he has LSU at #1 that he must be the second coming.

I am totaling rambling here, so I apologize. Maybe If i sleep on this I'll be more organized tomorrow......but i want them to do a legit search and see what is out there before blindly giving the job to Les.

Sorry for the rant.

No apologies needed TP. Loved the post. I too am a life long fan. I am hopeful we will see changes that will bring our team into the modern era (finally). Should be an interesting few months for the program.

Would you like Les:shrug: Just tryin' get get an idea of how bamboozled folks are based on his "success" at LSU.

Of course, imo he will not have been successful at LSU unless he wins the SEC Championship. Nat'l titles are alot to ask for, but conference championships and BCS bids aren't. So far, he's got 1 BCS appearance and no SEC Championship game appearances through 2 seasons. IMO, this is not good enough given the talent he inherited.............4 1st rounders last year, plus Dorsey, Highsmith, Tyson Jackson and Doucet have 1st round grades this season.

DW--thanks......sometimes i am too obsessed w/ the football program. I am a runner, and i swear i spend most of my sunday morning runs thinking of the coaches who impressed me the day before and wondering how they would do at Michigan.

Cie---the way it sounds, and the way info is flying around....it is going to be hard to keep this a secret....it'll be interesting how this affects LSU.......they should be in the title game, unless they forget how to tackle and D-Mac goes nuts in a couple of weeks....or if Richt out coaches him again in the SEC title game....or worse Phat Phil.

Steve Spurrier at LSU scares the beejuses out of me.....maybe we could lure him to Ann Arbor ;)

The way the season has tanked in So Carolina, he would bolt to LSU in less than a heart beat if offered the LSU job.

Also, doesn't Les have a clause where he would owe LSU $$$$ if he leaves specifically for UM? Maybe UM picks up the tab on that.

I guess I should have mentioned this before... I see Les as a mild upgrade from Lloyd. He's someone that would sure bring some passion to the team and the tradition that is Michigan but I have GREAT concern about his results while at LSU. I think Les would open up the offense more (not where it should be) and could potentially help us recruit as he has had some presence in the South.

My personal belief echoes that of Toledo Prophet. I think a full nationwide search should ensue - there are likely better coaches out there than Les for Michigan's future. I view this as the #1 potential position available this offseason. It is definitely a top 5 position in Division 1. There would be a ton of interest if it were opened up, I just don't think Bill Martin will do it.

To further answer your question, I think a lot of Michigan fans think Les will be the second coming. Other than a couple games a year, folks don't see LSU play in this area. They hear what the press says. They don't see the mistakes and don't question when a program brings in a coach of a successful team (regardless of whether this success was theirs or if it was a result of simply being in the right position at the right time).

We also hear a lot of "SEC Superiority" comments up here in Big Ten country and many will think that Michigan has made a significant coup to steal one of the "premier" coaches away. Listen, folks around here thought we got something special when the Lions hired Mariucci. Few around here delve into the finer details - they just get excited about a name.

It's funny, to one of Toledo Prophets points, there would be a major uprising if Michigan brought in Brian Kelly. Sure, there are some backers around here from his time at CMU, but there is no way his "name" is big enough for Michigan's program and there is no way in hell that Michigan will hire a guy that was the replacement for MSU's coach. Unfortunately there is too much pride there and there will be excellent coaches overlooked in this process.

Meanwhile, I hope the rumors of change are true and I wish Lloyd a happy retirement. He had his time. Now is the time to move on.

Here's the clause in Miles' contract.

"Coach covenants and agrees that as part of the consideration of this agreement he will not seek nor will he accept employment as a football coach at the University of Michigan for the term of this agreement. It being expressly understood that should coach accept employment at the University of Michigan, coach shall pay to the University (LSU) in lieu of all other legal remedies, liquidated damages in the sum of one million two hundred fifty thousand ($1,250,000.00) dollars and will forfeit any claim to funds under Section 11 of this contract."

1) you too? Except I don't run. I wonder this all day Sunday as I watch the third replay of SportsCenter...
2) I don't much like him as a person, but this sure would be a lot of fun. I wish there were a chance...
3) Bill Martin will make sure of this. I think there has been a "Les Miles Rainy Day Fund" going on for some time now.

Don't worry Cie, I can't picture any scenario in which Les would leave prior to the bowl game.

IMO Lloyd will not announce the retirement until just prior to or just after UM's bowl game Jan 1st. Martin will then start the "search" and do his interviews and of course the required minority interviews leading up to the BCS title game. Les will get the last "interview" and accept the job.
