Heading to Texas for a business meeting and have a choice between Dallas and Houston.

I've never been to Texas, and wouldn't mind spending a day or two extra bumming around. Which place has a better vibe?
and
Which place is better set up for someone who doesn't drive?

A hotel/downtown area with good restaurant/bars and sites within walking or easy transit access.

Any thoughts?

As a Fort Worth Boy, I will say Dallas, they has DART. Been to Houston a ton a times, just too busy for me but I get to work in 13 minuetes....so need quick travel.

Need to come check out Jerry's place, they have a tour, either 16 or 30 based on what you want to see, cool place. Rangers next door.

Tons of Great places in downtown Dallas, hardly go so can't give any ecmendations.

Still say Dallas

You would do better to stay in Dallas as Houston is also fun but just a bit more spread out as to what and where to stay. If you are going to be in Dallas, one, let me know and maybe we can have a beverage.
Two, Deep Ellum is in Downtown Dallas and pretty eclectic mix of all things that make up the night life in Dallas somewhat decent. It's no Chicago but Deep Ellum has a ton of live bands and clubs all in a smaller area that is easily accessible by cab. There is little or no public transport in either city. North Dallas, the Addison area or lower Greeneville has another mix of clubs and bars but the music scene is not quite as good but this is where you will find Blues bars and lots of clubs that cater to more of an upscale club type atmosphere and lots of restaurants. I would try to hit those areas. While there is the west sieda. That is also where the AA center and etc. are and has large clubs but not nearly the options of food and atmosphere. While I understand not everyone on here will agree with me or maybe are looking for something more specific, this is a pretty fair description of the areas. If I were you I would look to stay in North Dallas and just cab it to Ellum as it is a contained area where addison and greeneville provide the good eats and atmosphere options, Ellum is a bar atmosphere.

hope that helps, I know it is no The Boys movie review but accurate enough,

Thanks for the input. Unless some Houston boosters change my mind in the next week or so, I'll go for Dallas.

Biggest plus aside from what mentioned here, is that Virgin America flies into Dallas and not Houston.

Hedgy might change your mind for Houston, but he does not ever meet anyone, so good luck with that showing you around in Houston. Probably busy with a new date. But doubt it.

Seems he agrees with everyone else. Glad I asked cause I had no idea there was such a big difference.

I have lived in both so I guess I will give my two cents although my time in Dallas was from birth to 10 years although have been back to Dallas tons of times.

I would ask what type of plans you are looking for.
Dallas clearly has a better downtown area in which to find things to do than Houston.
However if you are looking for different things to do if you are willing to drive then I would say Houston offers more than Dallas.

Neither is exactly the tourist hot spot but like I said it depends on what you to do or see.
Downtown Houston is limited to Minute Maid Ballpark area and the House of Blues bar area for the most part.
If you drive then you can always hit Galveston or Moody if you are looking for tourist type stuff.

If you are a golfer then I would give a HUGE edge to Houston.
Tour 18 is unbeatable.
