NEW YORK (AP) ? Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN after 18 years, insisting there is no acrimony but saying he was beginning to take his job for granted.

The former SportsCenter anchor announced his decision on his radio show Monday and said his final show will be Aug. 17. Patrick said he hoped to continue working in radio but wasn't sure if he would do any more television.

"It's been home, but I think I was starting to take it for granted, and I did not want to do that," Patrick said on the air. "I did not think that was fair to these great people."

Patrick said ESPN executives tried to talk him out of his decision. He originally planned to make the announcement last week, but they asked him to reconsider.

"If there was animosity, I wouldn't be doing radio shows after this one today," he said.

Patrick recently served as host of the NBA studio program on ABC, NBA Countdown, and the network's game broadcasts, including the NBA finals. He was a SportsCenter anchor from 1989-06.

He has hosted The Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio since 1999. During his last week, ESPN Radio will look back at memorable moments from the show.

"Dan has accomplished so much over the past two decades at ESPN and fans and newsmakers have turned to him for his steady and trusted approach," ESPN executive vice president for production Norby Williamson said in a statement. "We wish him the very best."

Patrick was honored as National Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2000 and received a Sports Emmy Award in the Studio Host category in 1998.

He was a sports anchor/reporter for CNN from 1983-89.

Any verified rumors about what he will do? Although he is top of the shelf as far as most are concerned, in my opinion he has sounded a little tired the past few months on the radio show. Hard to believe he's done that since '99. I always thought he seemed a little jealous of Olberman's main guy gig since leaving - chides him about it often, almost too often.

Wonder how much truth there is to the Price is Right audition? Haven't listened lately, but the timing would be about right.

I think he is tremendously boring on his show. He's one of the few that bores me to death at lunch time. Yuck and good riddance.

His show was okay. He was better on television than radio. He often cried a lot and had a nagging voice when he got mad.

I think he will sign with the price is right..

I don't know about anyone else but to me this may be the worst game show in the history of television. How it has lasted this long:shrug: is mind boggling. I cannot turn this show on for two seconds. What is the fascination? Maybe looking at the girls? Nikki Zerring was awesome to look at but she has been gone for years.

Here's my thinking, I think Collin Cowherd will move in to his time slop. This is a lot better for Collin because a lot of local ESPN stations carry local radio shows in the morning so the only way to listen to Collin is online. IF he moves to Dan's time slot he will have a much bigger audience and much more potential.

IF, this happens I will wonder if Dan really quit or if he was asked to leave and given the oppty to quit because of who he is for ESPN. I like Dan but his show has sucked for a while now and Collin had to be promised something big for the move he made from the West Coast to the East.

Just having some fun with a conspiracy theory. :SIB
