Terry Dunn led Dartmouth to a remarkable turnaround in his first year last season. Prior to his arrival, the Big Green won just one game against Ivy League competition.

Last season under Dunn, Dartmouth posted a 7-7 record in conference play, marking the second-best turnaround in Ivy League history. Most notably, the Big Green snapped a seven-game losing streak against Princeton and went 6-1 against Ivy opponents at home.

Continued improvement will hinge on the team?s ability to recover from the loss of three senior starters, including second team All-Ivy selection David Gardner, now a professional player in Germany.

?One of my concerns is how to replace their leadership. We need to find people to step up and be leaders every day,? Dunn said. ?I also feel that we lost a great deal of toughness. . . . It will be interesting to see how the veterans mesh with the rookies.?

The Big Green will be in good hands with senior guard Mike Lang, who averaged a team-high 11.8 points last season. The 6-foot-3 Lang lit up UC-Davis with 33 points last season and can be counted on for clutch three-pointers.

A strong sophomore class begins with Johnathan Ball, a 6-foot-4 guard who averaged five points and provided steady defense all season. Classmate Chuck Flynn, a 6-foot-7 forward, will be asked for more offensive production, along with fellow sophomore Michael Giovacchini, who showed a glimpse of his explosiveness by scoring 19 points against Keene State last season.

Early scouting reports on Dartmouth show a team needing stability on the low post. In the absence of Gardner, Dartmouth must rely on senior Calvin Arnold (6-foot-9) and junior Patrick Bode (6-foot-8) to anchor the interior.

The season begins at Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Friday night as Dartmouth visits Boston College. The nonconference schedule includes games at Colorado, Army and intrastate rival New Hampshire on Jan. 16.
