The White Sox were off Monday, and, considering they just completed a stretch of 35 games in as many days, it should have been a stress-free break.

That was hardly the case, as Sox manager Ozzie Guillen retreated to his off-season home in Miami while general manager Kenny Williams was at U.S. Cellular Field preparing for Thursday's amateur draft.

Based on their 72-90 record last season, the Sox have the No. 8 overall pick.

Williams has been out scouting college and high school talent the past few weeks, so he had little time to comment Monday on the firestorm Guillen ignited the day before.

Following a 4-3 loss in 10 innings at Tampa Bay during which the White Sox were 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position, Guillen blasted the inconsistent offense.

"If we think we are going to win with the offense we have, we are full of (bleep),'' Guillen said.

The outspoken manager also expects some major changes before the Sox host the Kansas City Royals tonight.

"Just be ready, because I expect movement Tuesday,'' Guillen said. "I expect Kenny to do something Tuesday, and if we don't do anything Tuesday, there are going to be a lot of lineup changes. That's all I'm going to say about the offense.''

Williams reportedly was upset with Guillen's comments Sunday, saying: "Very interesting, very disappointing. It's never a good idea to throw your boss under the bus, especially when that boss has had his back as much as I have. I guess that lineup will be real interesting to see on Tuesday.''

On Monday, Williams didn't care to comment much further.

"Yes, we talked and, no, I don't have any comment or time to discuss it,'' Williams said in an e-mail.

Guillen didn't return phone calls all day Monday.

Since Williams hired his former teammate as White Sox manager on Nov. 3, 2003, he has had to deal with numerous Guillen outbursts.

Williams doesn't particularly like dealing with the headaches, but he has expressed his admiration for Guillen's passion -- albeit sometimes misguided -- countless times.

Guillen specifically referred to Williams in his postgame diatribe Sunday, but it was more an outpouring of frustration following another game the Sox should have won.

As for lineup changes, the slumping Nick Swisher (.201) likely is headed for extended bench time, and Jim Thome (.212) and Paul Konerko (.205) could be dropped even lower in the batting order.

Moving Alexei Ramirez up to the leadoff spot and sliding Orlando Cabrera back to No. 2 also could be a positive change.

After that, there's not much Williams can do.

Swisher still is considered an up-and-coming hitter, and Williams traded three quality prospects to get him from Oakland in the off-season.

Konerko is a 10-and-5 player, so he can veto any deal, and Thome has low trade value as he approaches his 38th birthday.

The White Sox have a long stretch of home games coming up, and the Cell is a hitter-friendly ballpark when the weather heats up.

But if the offense still is sputtering at the end of the month, Williams finally might take Guillen's advice.

Scouting report

White Sox vs. Kansas City Royals at U.S. Cellular Field

Pitching matchups: The White Sox' Gavin Floyd (5-3) vs. Zack Greinke (5-2) today; John Danks (4-4) vs. Luke Hochevar (3-5) Wednesday; Jose Contreras (5-3) vs. Gil Meche (3-7) Thursday. All games 7:11 p.m.

At a glance: After a day off, the Sox are back in action. Most of the fireworks could come before the game. After going 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position in a loss Sunday at Tampa Bay, manager Ozzie Guillen went off on the White Sox' inconsistent offense and asked general manager Kenny Williams to make some changes. The Royals lost 12 straight before winning two in a row against the Cleveland Indians over the weekend. Greinke has an impressive arm, but he has allowed 9 runs on 14 hits over 13 innings while losing his last 2 starts. Contreras is 4-1 in his last 5 starts, allowing only 6 earned runs in 35 innings. The Sox play 13 of their next 16 at home.

I'm going to the game, weather permitting. Looks like rain though. Wonder how the crowd will be when lineups are announced.

On The Media Vultures Circling Guillen

I don't get it.

Ozzie Guillen goes off following a terrible offensive series--a series which saw the Sox go 5-41 with runners in scoring position and strand runners who reached scoring position with nobody out on 5 separate occasions in the last two games--yet the narrative from the local and national media was about Guillen, whether he should be fired, whether he is "out of line."

I'm no Guillen apologist. I've been known to rip him repeatedly in my recaps. And I can't even begin to build a case for his firing this season.

Guillen has been superb through the first 55 games. He hasn't made a single egregious in-game tactical error large enough for me to even note in any of my recaps. He was quick to get Quentin at-bats. He's banished Jerry Owens. He's using Toby Hall in the most efficient way possible. He shuffled the lineup when shuffling the lineup was about all he could do. And he's made the right in-game decisions at just about every turn. What more can you ask for from a manager?

So he says exactly what he feels. Who cares? The PC Police should be bowing at his feet every time he goes on one of his rants, because without him they'd have nothing to write about, nothing but dead air.

Think about this. The Sox have had two 4-game series in domes this season. They've allowed a total of 21 runs in those 8 games, which works out to 2.625 runs per game. As I recall, 5 of those runs in Toronto were unearned--or came in innings with extra outs--so the pitching staff allowed 16 "earned" runs in the two series. 8 games. They were 1-7 in those games. One and Fricken' Seven.

It's no coincidence that those two series have spawned the two Ozzie outbreaks and media storms. If the facts in the previous paragraph don't make you want to spout off a string of explicatives, you're not a Sox fan. You haven't been watching the same old shit for the last two years.

Ozzie Guillen is the biggest Sox fan there is. And he's had a front row seat for every single runner stranded on second after 3 straight pop-ups. He's been in the dugout everytime Nick Swisher GIDPs with RISP--Swisher's got 5 hits with RISP to go allong with his 5 GIDPs w/RISP. He's got to watch a team immune to the opposite field, pulling 84 MPH junk thrown off the outside corner. That's gotta drive even the strongest man crazy.

Who among us can honestly blame Guillen for letting off some steam? We all did the same thing.

Yet, 'the consensus around baseball' is that Guillen went too far. What did he say that went 'too far?'

"If we think we are going to win with the offense we have, we are full of it. I'm just being honest. I expect better from them if they're in the lineup.
"Just be ready because I expect movement Tuesday. I expect (general manager) Kenny Williams to do something Tuesday, and if we don't do anything Tuesday, there are going to be a lot of lineup changes. That's all I'm going to say about the offense." [...]

"It can be me. It can be (hitting coach) Greg Walker. It can be the players. It could be anybody," he said. "I'm sick and tired to watch this thing for a year and a half. I'm not protecting anybody anymore. [Bleep] it. If they can't get it done, Kenny should find someone to get it done."

Let's translate that.

The offense sucks. It's sucked for 2 years now. I'm tired of it. I'm going to make some changes Tuesday. I want Kenny to make some changes too.

Fire me. Fire Walker. Fire anyone. There needs to be changes. And if Kenny doesn't make 'em, I will.

We know Ozzie's not getting fired. Hell, we know Walker's not getting fired. All he said was that Konerko, Thome, and Swisher are going to have a lot more free time during the games.

Oh. My. God. A major league manager is going to cut the playing time of his struggling sluggers. The horror!

Quick! Call Rosenthal. See if Kornheiser is awake. Tell Marriotti to dust off his best "Fire Ozzie" material. It's sanctimonious Guillen roasting time!

We have had at least an inch and a half of rain here in the last hour. Streets are all flooded and there is a flash flood warning out for the smaller rivers and creeks in the area.
Radar shows its gonna be around here until mid-afternoon and its moving east/northeast. maybe the Sox get the game in?

Are they going to get the game in? If so, it's going to be a sloppy field to play on.

I like the Royals after reading everything. Players will be pressing for the White Sox and Greinke has been solid until recently.

Floyd's home numbers are awesome, but he's not as good as his early numbers would indicate.

I wouldn't bet this game with your money Double D. Who knows how the players will come out and KC isn't exactly on fire over their last 15 games. Also, the weather may be a factor. The starters may not go many innings and there will be a shifting of the wind during gametime.

gun to my head I'd play the Over 8
