NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States has struck a deal with Pakistan to allow U.S. troops to hunt for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden this spring in an area of Pakistan where he is believed to be operating, the New Yorker magazine reported on Sunday.
Thousands of U.S. troops will be deployed in a tribal area of northwest Pakistan in return for Washington's support of President Pervez Musharraf's pardon of the Pakistani scientist who this month admitted leaking nuclear arms secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea, investigative reporter Seymour Hersh wrote in the issue that goes on sale on Monday.

Full disclosure of Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan's activities would have exposed him as "the worst nuclear-arms proliferator in the world," an intelligence official is quoted as saying.

"It's a quid pro quo," according to a former senior intelligence official. "We're going to get our troops inside Pakistan in return for not forcing Musharraf to deal with Khan."

Musharraf has also offered other help in the hunt for bin Laden, accused of masterminding the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, according to the article.

"Musharraf told us, 'We've got guys inside. The people who provide fresh fruits and vegetables and herd the goats' for bin Laden and his al Qaeda followers," the intelligence official added.

The spring offensive could slow the tempo of U.S. operations in Iraq, the magazine said.

"It's going to be a full-court press," one Pentagon planner was quoted as saying. The article added that some of the most highly skilled U.S. Special Forces units would be shifted from Iraq to Pakistan.

Special Forces personnel have been briefed on their new assignments and in some cases have been given "warning orders" -- the stage before being sent into combat, according to a military adviser.

I wonder why we waited so long. He is the number one guy we wanted. All that man power that went to Iraq to fight the flint stones. We could have had this guy long time ago. All the families that had folks die on 9/11 must feal cheated. This is the bastered they wanted not Saddam. Listen to any of them when interviewd. There glad Saddam is gone. But they make no mistake about who there real hate is for.

by now if you don't know why we went into iraq, i'm not going to rehash it. i'm pretty sure that you can figure it out.

if we went into pakistan without their permission, mussharef would look weak, which is counter-productive to our goals.

Actually, the US has been in Pakistan covertly for 2 yrs, says FNC. Musharraf had to keep it on the down low for his own reason, as well as the security of the US led Special Ops.

"the bunker"
musharaf

musharaf

is our ally....his reign in pakistan is tenuous at best...that`s probably why the traitor that sold nuclear technology was given a pass...

musharef is walking a fine line in pakistan....it`s not easy being a u.s. ally in the middle east...

if would be very stupid to undermine musharaf....not in our best interests....

i would hope that everyone would agree that we should do what`s in OUR best interests...i know it`s considered a horrible thing for us to act in our own best interests....everything we do is wrong....

give me a break..

at times it seems as if we are the only country seriously worried about nuclear proliferation...

hopefully, that`s starting to change....it`s beginning to look like russia, china and a few other powers are becoming concerned...

it`s finally dawning on these countries that you can`t leave these terrorists and tin pot dictators go unchecked...i expect that the iran situation will be addressed in a serious manner in the near future....

Russia Warns of Worsening N.Korea Situation - Tass
!

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's representative at the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program said on Sunday the impasse could aggravate the situation and ultimately lead to military intervention.

Alexander Losyukov was quoted by Russia's Itar-Tass news agency on his return from the second round of talks as saying the meeting had produced no concrete or practical movement toward resolution of the row.

"If this goes on, mistrust will grow on the Korean peninsula. The situation could be aggravated and military intervention is possible," he said.

"There could be attempts to blockade or limit North Korea's relations with other countries. All this could seriously worsen the situation."

thank god that the other powers are starting to look past their u.s. resentment and toward the bigger, more important issues...

what took so long?

Agree. I am about as opposed to Iraq as you can get, but I've always been afraid of NK. Being that they, you know, actually DO have nukes. Hearing that other nations are noticing that is a good thing, IMO.

"the bunker"
and the fact

and the fact

that they DO have them is why this is going to be a very, very touchy situation.....

the idea is to stop these s.o.b`s before they acquire wmd`s.....when they do get them, they then have the ultimate bargaining chip.....

if saddam had acquired them prior to to his incursion into kuwait,he might still be there...or we may have already seen ww3....not as far fetched as you might think....

i`m still snookered ideologically on the iraq invasion...but,as i`ve said before,i understand the rationale...

the cat`s out of the bag in n. korea.... s.korea and japan are in a very dicey position......and kim jong il is very unstable.....

hopefully,we can stop iran before things go to far...a country run by fanatical clerics with nuclear weapons is a very frightening scenario....

would be like jerry falwell being president(lol)....
