The competition for this year's annual Opening Day Hats Contest at Del Mar was fierce. Just ask last year's grand prize winner.
For 18 years, Chris Banner of Valley Center has entered into the annual contest that marks the first day of the Del Mar summer racing season. He's even been named champion a time or two.

Opening Day at Del Mar

Opening Day at Del Mar

Decent enough start to the Del Mar season for ya, Hammy. :00x15
Good luck with the new season there.

I do miss the time when the racetracks had REAL opeoning days, not opening a race twack 20 or even 100 miles down the road. That was something to get excited about. IF the racing degenerates ( I wasn't among them) had to play a horse in the winter they had to SOMEHOW (once upon a time there was no OTBs) bet the Florida races. I can't even relate how great it felt like on opening day when we hit the road to the track for a real OPENING DAY on a beautiful Spring day after a cold Winter. Didn't matter if it was a weekday (played hooky) and it usually was and it didn't matter if we won or lost. That was one of the greatest experiences to have every year in hoss wacin.

BTW, my father beat me on that score cause he used to take a week off every winter and spend it in Hialeah, the most beautiful race track of any. I did get to go to Hialeah when I visited Florida before I moved down here and EVEN THEN (place was starting to get a little worn down) it and it's grounds were the most beautiful twack inside and outside I ever visited.

What a shame what happened to horse racing.

Enjoy the BUMP to this thread :)

Oh, almost forgot - did anybody get the odds on the winning Hat ? ;)
