AUSTIN, Texas - A Texas grand jury indicted Rep. Tom DeLay on a new charge of money laundering Monday, less than a week after another grand jury leveled a conspiracy charge that forced DeLay to temporarily step down as House majority leader.

Both indictments accuse DeLay and two political associates of conspiring to get around a state ban on corporate campaign contributions by funneling the money through a political action committee to the Republican National Committee in Washington.

The RNC then sent back like amounts to distribute to Texas candidates in 2002, the indictment alleges.

The new indictment came hours after DeLay's attorneys filed a request to dismiss the case. That request argued that the conspiracy charge was based on a law that was not effective until 2003, the year after the alleged money transfers.

The judge who will preside in DeLay's case was out of the country on vacation and could not rule on the request. Other state district judges declined to rule on the request in his place, said Colleen Davis, a law clerk to Austin attorney Bill White, also represents DeLay.

It's nice to see that arrogant shiny-faced asshole squirm. Whether he's convicted or not, it's highly unlikely that he'll be back as the house leader, IMO. And the country will be better off.

...I don't know how they do things in Texas, but around here they always check the statute twice before drafting and filing...

I wonder how the right will spin this charge Kosar.

I don't know, man. Should be interesting. At the moment, the extreme right is more pissed off because the latest Supreme Court nominee was not the second coming of Jessee helms.

We'll see about that, but for right now, that's the interpretation of the defense lawyers, apparently. If it is that cut and dried, then the latest indictment is idiotic.

...seems awfully strange...the conspiracy charges are untimely, but the new money laundering charge is good...why didn't they bring it originally...need more details...

From purely a Texas lawyer point of view, these charges are remarkably weak and there is about as much chance of him getting convicted as there is of Hillary Clinton being penthouse Pet for November. The new indictment isnt reaally anything new, but it sounds good. DeLay is an idiot and I wont lose any sleep over him being gone, but it is a bit ridiculous for this trumped up thing to be the basis. it is one of those things that separates the honest debaters from the partisans. Do you want the guy gone one something legit, or at any cost? If the latter, you arent much of a liberal.

I'll give props to Texan denizens Freeze(not sure if he's still there, but was for a while), The Judge and Sun Tzu for telling it like it is about this guy. I don't know about Judge, but there's enough of a sample to know where Sun usually stands, let alone Freeze. I applaud them for for being honest even if it goes against the party line, because you rarely see that here on either side if the aisle.

Behind the closed doors there are a few Reb's that would love to see this guy just go away. He twisted some arms that didn't like it in his own party.

Oh Palehose, so either side doesn't spin this type of situation? We both know that isn't the truth.

My honest opinion you want aye ? remember this is my opinion ...
Overall with the 2 parties I do feel there is a lot more dirty pool and spin going on in the Democratic party then the Repubs .

A liitle more fact intertwined with this opinion: The worst thing that happend to politics since I really have been paying attention is that you cannot vote for a Conservative Democrat anymore ....they just plain dont exist, Zell was the last. This I think really blows because I am left with the Repubs that I dont always agree with and on top of that some of them are way too Liberal themselves .

I agree with you that Zell is definitely the last a dying breed. I thought it spoke volumes when he spoke at the republican convention instead of at the dems convention. He was a hell of a governor for our state as well as senator.
