"the bunker"
CAIRO, Egypt - "A top U.S. Democratic congressman met a leader of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s most powerful rival, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, U.S. officials and the Islamist group said Saturday.

Visiting House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer met with the head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s parliamentary bloc, Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, twice on Thursday — once at the parliament building and then at the home of the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, said Brotherhood spokesman Hamdi Hassan.

U.S. Embassy spokesman John Berry would only confirm that Hoyer, who represents Maryland, met with el-Katatni at U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone’s home at a reception with other politicians and parliament members.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has refused in the past to meet with the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest opposition group. But Berry said U.S. government policy does not bar meetings with Brotherhood members of parliament and Hoyer’s talks with el-Katatni were not a change in U.S. policy toward the group.

“It’s our diplomatic practice around the world to meet with parliamentarians, be they members of political parties or independents,” Berry said.

insanity....

""Jon Alterman, a Mideast specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said Bush administration officials may have avoided meeting Muslim Brotherhood members because it could strain relations with the secular Egyptian government, one of the closest U.S. allies in the Arab world.
"The difficulty when it gets to Egypt is that the Brotherhood is not a legal group within Egypt and the U.S. government is wary of violating laws in countries in which it operates," he told The Associated Press on Saturday.""

apparently, the dems aren't as wary.......

hmmmmm...undermining the secular egyptian, allied gov`t of mubarak.....and the christian/joo hating dems are colluding with the radical muslim brotherhood....

i guess it isn`t religion that offends the dems...it`s just joos and christians....as we see on this board much to frequently....

the radicals call the dems ""our allies in the anti-imperialist left"......lol

makes one wonder where those enormous democratic presidential candidate`s warchests are coming from.....

ask someone why he/she is a dem and often times the response is "the democrats are for the little guy.".....

makes sense...an alliance of dems with islamicists is a good fit.......in islamic societies everyone is a little guy........

As I understand these so call mtg's were not official.
Took place as part of other functions they were at. Would we say those who visit the USA and want to mt with other then Reb's or Dem party members would be wrong. We need to keep in mind with Egypt's government not loved by more then 44% of it's population. We better know what some of the opposition is thinking. And since Reb's and Dem's members of congress have been doing things like this for years. This is not something new.

Wayne:

Agree with you 100% that the enemy is within. Similar to the extreme right in Germany in the 1930's. Remember how the German people embraced the NAZI party to their demise.

Been happening here since the 1994 election.

"Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Qur'an is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope."—Muslim Brotherhood

exactly what kind of a conversation can steny hoyer have with people like that?...

"Ayman al-Zawahiri was born to a prominent middle class family in Maadi, Egypt, a suburb of Cairo, and was reportedly a studious youth.

He grew more religious than his relatively secular family, and by fourteen joined an Islamist group called the Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin), and had become a student and follower of Sayyid Qutb."......

for those that aren`t familiar....lets untangle this...

muslim brotherhood = killers of anwar sadat = arab leader who made peace with israel = too radical even for mubarak....

our new friends.....this looks like the beginning of the unholy alliance between the left and islamists......

:mj07:

You have GOT to be kidding.

Never a word from you about Reagans 'alliance' with Islamists (That would be Bin Laden, just for starters). Never a word about Reagan getting the hell right out of Lebanon after Islamists blew up 241 of our Marines. Cut and run? Nah, it was Ronnie Raygun. Not possible.

Never a word about Reagan illegally selling arms to Iran a few short years after they took over our embassy.

Never a word about Reagan's and Bush 41's friendship with Saddam.

But the whole f*cking world is collapsing because that ditz Pelosi and Hoyer are simply talking to Syria and some Islamic group.

In case you haven't noticed, W's foreign policy hasn't exactly been a smashing success. No comment on that either, I assume

You're a joke. No offense.

excuse me...reagan was "THE PRESIDENT"....not a fricking botox intoxicated grandmother that doesn`t understand the meaning of "one foreign policy"....

and please post the link that says that reagan "illegally" sold arms to iran.....and you`d better have a link...

one that lays out his indictment and prosecution...

of course we`ve done business with reprobates before....every administration....

from fdr...to kennedy...to clinton.....don`t get me started on carter...

but, they were the fricking president...they determined it was in our national interest....

the muslim brotherhood has nothing to offer...certainly not to steny "fricking" hoyer....

you obviously don`t know a thing about the muslim brotherhood...how syria is,right now, providing arms to kill our soldiers in iraq....they are responsible for assassinating the lebanese president....they fund hamas and hezbollah.....

all mortal enemies of the west....

btw,no offense taken...

I think "fact finding missions" done by congressmen/women many times in the past are different than engaging in direct diplomacy with leaders of other nations that counters the offical position of the US Executive.
Correct me if I am wrong.

I understand why you blindly follow this administration. Your level of understanding is equal to your leaders. How can we as a country orchestrate peace if we don't meet with the players ? The Bush policy is working & everything is great. This administration is the worst in the history of our country. No one has done more to help our enemies than Bush. He has served up American troops as targets in this ground war in Iraq. We are the most powerful country in the world and your boy bush has leveled the playing field for our enemies. Why have 5 former top generals turned down this president to become the war czar ? They like most of everyone in the rest of the thinking world, know that this guy hasn't a glue ! Cut and run looks good about now. When do you stop the bleeding. Your boy sat down at the table with $1000, he made a run up to $50,000, now he has $500. I don't think he gets back to $50,000, do you ? Someone tell him it's over, go get breakfast and go home. This administration is good at a couple of things : getting people killed for nothing and not taking care of the ones with their asses on the line. When will we get the right armored vehicles over there ? Let's talk about the basics, where are all the billions going ? Not to equipment. Not to the VA system.

I guess great Americans like Weasel, our President & VP can't answer where are all the billions are going ? All they due is question others patriotism and hunt for traitors while we as a nation suffer our biggest military debacle ever. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, someone explain it to me. Our defense budget is 625B,> 80% of our dead and wounded have come from IED's, it would cost about 9B to put on the ground the 7500 armored humvess they need. What are we waiting for ? Bush & Cheney support the troops but can't give them the basics to do the job. Mccain went over there, he supports the surge. The only thing that has surged is the rate of life and limbs lost by his fellow Americans. Did anyone notice what he was riding around in ?
